The mysterious sailing stones of Death Valley have been discovered to walk on their own over the valleys. The dry salt lake of Death Valley is the running place of the moving stones. The sailing stones are of different shapes and weights. But they all leave a long line behind them. What causes the stones to walk?
Glands Sharp explained the mystery after years of study. He chose 30 common stones in Death Valley and marked each of their beginning places to see whether they could move.A year later, except two stones, all had moved.Sharp studied the lines of the stones and the climate during the year.He came up with the conclusion that their moving was the result of the wind and rain.
The bottom of the dry salt lake is solid (坚硬的)because of little rain all year around, while the surface of it is covered with a kind of soil which becomes very slippery (滑的)even with a little rain. And the wind is strong enough to let the stones walk through the smooth ground to leave a line behind them. And the dry climate makes the line stay for a long time.
However, others are sceptical about Sharp's explanation. They think if the wind moves them, they should leave parallel (平行的)lines. But the 28 stones move in different directions.Sharp says that was caused by the grade of wind force and the weight of the stone.A very strong wind can make all the stones move in the same direction, but a less strong wind from another direction can only move stones with less weight, and so makes them turn their way of moving.
36.Glands Sharp marked the beginning places of the 30 stones to______.
A.see whether they would change their places

Coal mine accidents are frequently headline makers in China, offering a plentiful supply of long lists of the dead. Before this, five major coal mine accidents since January have already claimed lives of 287 coal miners. Once an accident happens, the safety measures are scrutinized, officials and owners responsible are punished or warned or fined. But the accidents keep happening time and again. The background of these endless disasters is a country thirsty for energy to satisfy the appetite of its economic engine.
With the rich reserve (储藏)of coal and relatively limited petroleum (石油)reserve, the former makes up 67.12 percent of energy consumption.By contrast,Petroleum and natural gas hold about 60 percent of the energy consumption in other countries.
Such a situation is unlikely to change within a foreseeable future because the country still counts heavily on coal for more and more energy. If no measures with great effects are taken to improve the safety in the mines, the accidents will remain a long-term headache for China.Digging coal underground is,by its nature,a dangerous job.No equipment can guarantee 100
percent safety for the miners working underground because numerous uncertainties exist.
Most of China's coal mines are far from being mechanized. The average output of coal for each Chinese coal miner every day is 1 ton, while the number in the US coal mines, where the production is highly mechanized,is 40 tons.
Mechanized production in coal mines can cut down the number of miners who have to work on the dangerous coal-face.It can also enhance the capability of the mines to detect potential danger. In this way the casualty of mine accidents will be decreased.
Admittedly, the mechanized production demands financial support.
But what is the price of a life,or a dozen,a score,a hundred?Compare these awful figures with the misery they bring, heavy investment is worthy.
40.The writer's attitude towards dealing with coal mine accidents is______.
A.critical B.sarcastic
C.optimistic D.pessimistic
41.The underlined word “scrutinized”most probably means______.
A.made B.examined

A.by improving mechanized production,we can stop coal mine accidents
B.it's improper to depend too much on coal for energy consumption
C.officials and coal mine owners doesn't take safety measures seriously

The Green Revolution is the name given some years ago to the development of new kinds of rice and other grains. The new plants produced much larger crops. The Green Revolution was the result of hard work by agricultural scientists who had green thumbs.
Green is also the color used to describe the powerful feeling, jealousy(嫉妒).The green-eyed monster is not a frightening creature from outer space. It is an expression used about four hundred years ago by British writer William Shakespeare in his play “Othello”.It describes the unpleasant feeling a person has when someone has something he wants.A young man may suffer from the green-eyed monster if his girlfriend begins going out with someone else.Or,that green-eyed monster may affect your friend if you get a pay rise and she does not.
