APPPart I Reading Comprehension (30%)Directions: There are three passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet。

Passage 1Questions I to 5 are based on the following passage:Spending 50 minutes with a cell phone close to your ear is enough to change brain cell activity in the part of the brain closest to the antenna(天线). But whether that causes any harm is not clear, scientists at the National Institute of Health said at a conference last month, adding that the study will not likely settle concerns of a link between cell phones and brain cancer. “What we showed is glucose (葡萄糖) metabolism(代谢)(a sign of brain activity) increases in the brain in people who were exposed to a cell phone in the area closest to the antenna,” said Dr. Nora Volkow of the NIH, whose study was published in the Journal of the American Medical Association. (76) The study was meant to examine how the brain reacts to electromagnetic fields caused by wireless phone signals。

2. Reading ComprehensionPART 2 Reading Comprehension (55 points)In this part you will find a number of questions or unfinished statements after each passage. You must choose one letter (marked A,B,C, and D) you think fits best. The time for this part is 75 minutes. My First Experience with AIDS Patients 我初次接触艾滋病人by Marc Kielburger I was ushered to the AIDS ward of a hospice in the slum.I would later learn that the ward did not exist,at least not officially. Not a single person in Thailand had AIDS,according to the Thai government at the time.People got”sick,”of course, sometimes”very sick.”but no one had AIDS.The hospice was home to an ever-growing number of”very sick”people. I entered the ward and was greeted by two Thai nurses. “Thank goodness you are here,Marc,”said the first. “You’re a doctor, right?”I shook my head. “So you are a medical student then!”I shook my head again. “But you know medicine, right?”“Kinda,”I offered.”I watch E.R.,every Thursday” After a rapid exchange in Thai, the first one said,”NO problem.Get ready for your fou- hour medical school training!”“But in my country medical school takes years!”I protested. “We don’t have that long,” she replied. “So we better get started. “During the next few hours, I learned to clean wounds, administer IVs, treat bedsores, and dispense medicine. The work was punishing, made worse by stifling heat, frequent blackouts, and an incredible stench in the air. I tried desperately to hide my weak nerves and queasy stomach, but more than once dashed for the bathroom to throw up. Just when it seemed my training was coming to an end, the nurse took me aside. “There are only two more things you need to know,” she said. “On the left-hand side of the ward, you will find what we call the Exit Area. “ As it turned out, she meant “exit” in the largest sense of the word. Terminally ill patients were hidden behind a curtain and then exited out of the ward after death. “The second thing you need to know,”she continued, “is that we haven’t had a day off in three weeks. You’ll be looking after the ward by yourself for the next shift. “My jaw dropped. “Don’t worry, Mare,” said the other nurse, patting me on the shoulder before turning to leave. “Think of this as the beginning of your residency !” And with that, they walked out. Alone and petrified, I tried unsuccessfully to keep calm. I counted to twenty-four. That’s how many AIDS patients were in my charge. What am I going to do? I thought. What can I do? I fell back on my training with the Canadian government and put my talents to work. I served patients water-some with ice, some without. Next, I tried to cheer up everyone, myself included, giving enthusiastic high-fives to patient after patient. Soon enough, everyone was laughing. Some were laughing with me, others most definitely at me, but I didn’t care. As long as I could keep people smiling, I was sure it would all be fine. And it was. Until a short whilelater, when a patient in the Exit Area began to choke. He had fluid in his lungs and could not breathe. As I crossed the floor, I could hear the man gasping for air. Fumbling and scared, I pulled back the curtain and administered the medicine the nurses had recommended. The man didn’t respond. With nothing left to offer, I sat down and held his hand, looking into his eyes as he breathed heavily for a while and then stopped. Watching him slip away, I was hit by a feeling of anguish such as I’d never felt, either before or since. It haunts me to this day.1.Judging from the passage, what is the writer most likely to be?A.A doctorB.A medical studentC.A volunteerD.A government official正确答案:C 涉及知识点:名词2.Why were the two Thai nurses happy to see Marc?A.Because Marc was an experienced doctor for AIDS.B.Because Marc could amuse the patients.C.Because Marc would offer them further medical training.D.Because Marc would work in the ward so that they could enjoy a day off. 3.What is the actual meaning of the phrase “Exit Area” by the nurse?A.A place where to wait for transferring to a good hospital.B.A place where to wait for bidding a final good bye to the world.C.A place where to be treated by experienced doctors.D.A place where to wait for checking out and going home. 4.What was the AIDS patients’response toward Marc’s efforts to cheer them up?A.They all appreciated his efforts.B.They were all grateful for his efforts.C.They all enjoyed his efforts.D.Some of them thought his efforts were ridiculous. 5.Which of the following did Marc NOT do to the patients?A.Giving them operations.B.Amusing them.C.Administering medicine to them.D.Sitting by their deathbeds. Timberwolves are Marching to a New Tune For the past seven years,Kevin McHale has struggled to put the right combination around his superstar,Kevin Garnett.McHale brought in dozens of players to complement his main man,but in the end the Timberwolves always looked like the’70s band Wings-one star(Paul McCartney) and a bunch of people nobody noticed. With apologies to all of you who still are jamming to”Silly Love Songs,”Wings never could live up to the Beatles. They didn’t have the star power. Well,McHale finally has found his own personal John Lennon and Ringo Starr, and their names are Sam Cassell and Latrell Sprewell. The two veteran guards have given the Wolves an edge they’ve never had before, and suddenly Garnett doesn’t have to do it all by himself. Wednesday in San Antonio,Garneu struggled at the start, found himself in foul trouble and never really got into the flow of the game.As all superstars do,he still managed to put up good numbers(22 points and 10 rebounds). But Gamett never found his groove.and he certainlv didn’t control the game. Fortunately for Kevin Garnett,he didn’t have to.Cassell, who has hit more big shots than anyone this side of Reggie Miller, came through with a huge game.Displaying his uncanny knack for creating his own midrange shots,Cassell riddled the Spurs’defense for 33 points including several clutch buckets in the fourth quarter. Some guys like to take big shots.Cassell needs them. When the game gets tight and his.team needs a basket,Sam’s eyes light up and he enters another world. He lusts for moments like those. Sprewell also had a major impact in Wednesday’s victory, scoring 24 points and sealing the win with a steal and a highlight-reel slam.He is playing with amazing energy and zeal, and a touch of attitude that we haven’t seen from Wolves players in the past.Together.the”Big Three” have become a major force that has to rank with any combination in the league. Wednesday’s victory in San Antonio epitomized the type of team that Minnesota has been all season. The Wolves defended well, scored 100 points against the league’s best defense.got major contributions from their bench and huge shots from their stars, and showed a resilience and confidence usually reserved for championship teams. After several first-round flameouts,is this the year the Wolves finally make it over the hump in the playoffs? It’s only January,so we probably shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves. But the team I saw Wednesday night showed all the signs of being a major player in the NBA playoffs this spring. If things fall just right for McHale, maybe he can finally stop fiddling with his roster and simply”Let It Be.”6.What kind of game of the following is talked about in this passage?A.volleyball gameB.football gameC.basketball gameD.badminton game正确答案:C 涉及知识点:名词7.What is Kevin McHale most probably?A.a counselorB.an officerC.a playerD.a coach正确答案:D 涉及知识点:名词8.The”Big Three”have become a major force that has to rank with any combination in the league.Whom does the”Big Three”refer to?A.Kevin Mehale,Kevin Garner and Paul McCarmeyB.Kevin Garnett,Latrell Sprewell and Ringo StarrC.Kevin Garnett,Sam Cassell and Latrell SprewellD.Kevin Gamett,John Lennon and Ringo Starr正确答案:C 涉及知识点:名词9.“Fiddling with his roster”in the last sentence of the passage means______.A.thinking of cheating in matches with false actionsB.playing with the name list of the team in order to form a better combination C.preparing a cock to treat his players for Wednesday’s victoryD.contemplating about the timetable of competitions正确答案:B 涉及知识点:名词10.The title of the passage”Timberwolves are marching to a new tune”means that______.A.the team has changed from having to arrange a good combination of players around its only superstar into a new state in which more players are performing wonderfullyB.the team has changed from having to arrange a good combination of players around Kevin Gamett into a new combination of players around the new stars Lennon and StarrC.the team has improved so much that it has entered a new stageD.the team has organized demonstration with some musical instruments playing beautiful tunes正确答案:A 涉及知识点:名词Her Dual Citizenship Brings Prejudice 她的双重国籍导致了偏见She is Vietnam’s top-ranked female tennis player.Still,Noel Huynh Mai Huynh is criticized by the state-run press and jeered by Vietnamese crowds who do not accept her as one of their own. “I play tennis for my family,”Huynh said before the Southeast Asian Games,a regional competition that runs through Saturday.”There’s a lot of pressure because I know a lot of people, they don’t like me very much.”Huynh,18,was born in the US territory of Guam. She is the first”Viet kieu.”or overseas Vietnamese,to receive dual citizenship from the Vietnam government to compete for Vietnam. Huynh was four years old when her family moved back to Ho Chi Minh City(formerly Saigon) in 1989.She did not speak Vietnamese then but has since mastered the language and now considers herself more Vietnamese than American. Still, many are wary. She is thought of as spoiled because of her American passport. It doesn’t seem to matter that she’s never been on the US mainland. She and her four siblings—all accomplished tennis players—have been passed over for less talented Vietnamese players. “We practice in Vietnam,we grew up in Vietnam...and they cannot beat us so they try to keep us out of competitions so we don’t beat them,”said brother,Jean-Pierre Qui Phu Huynh Jr. The 65-year-old family patriarch, also named Jean-Pierre,is their inspiration. In perfect English,he recounts the path that led him from Vietnam in 1975 and back 14 years later. They moved to Guam, where cated Jean-Pierre became a top tennis player with a big house and booming business building tennis coups.Still, something was missing. So he decided to go home in 1987. The family, all US citizens, returned to Vietnam two years later. Most refugees were too scared to think of visiting them. The elder Huynh coached his children up to eight hours a day,six days a week, and tried to make sure they got to play. He became friends with former Prime Minister V o Van Kiet,a tennis fan,and built the country’s largest tennis complex in Ho Chi Minh City.He brought in international tennis competitions and urged Vietnam to strengthen its national team.Still, the discrimination persisted. “I don’t care about anybody who cheers for the other player,”his daughter said.”It’s OK for me,but sometimes I’m kind of sad about that because I’m on the national team but thev alwavs want the other players to beat me.”With Vietnam hosting the Southeast Asian Games for the first time and encouraging about 2.5 million Viet kieu to return, she was given a chance at this event. “With the participation of Huynh Mai Huynh, the Vietnamese tennis team will be stronger,”said Nguyen Hong Minh, head of the Vietnamese SEA Games sports delegation.”This is in our policy to expand international relations as well as win the support of the overseas Vietnamese community.”She was eliminated from doubles and mixed doubles. Her strength is singles.but she said her coaches didn’t select her for that event. Huynh says all she wants is to represent thecountry she considers home. “I’ll stay here,”she said,”and I’ll play for Vietnam forever.”11.Why is Neol Huynh Mai Huynh not favored by Vietnamese crowds?A.Because she was born somewhere other than in Vietnam and therefore she is not a pure Vietnamese.B.Because she doesn’t have a high opinion of the Vietnamese government.C.Because she was born in a US territory and is both citizen of Vietnam and a citizen of America.D.Because she often plays and defeats other Vietnamese tennis players. 12.Which of the following statements is true?A.Huynh went to America when she was a child and later returned to Vietnam with her familyB.Huynh considered herself more Vietnamese than American. However,a lot of people have doubt about it.C.Huynh cannot speak Vietnamese, and this is one of the reasons why she is not accepted by Vietnamese people.D.A lot of people in Vietnam consider Huynh more American than Vietnamese. 13.The word”inspiration”in the sentence”The 65-year-old family patriarch.also named Jean- Pierre,is their inspiration”probably means______.A.encouragementB.ingenuityC.supportD.comfort正确答案:A 涉及知识点:名词14.The reason for Jean-Pierre,the family patriarch,to decide to go home with family is mostly likely that______.A.the family was hard up in a foreign countryB.he couldn’t find what he liked in GuamC.his children wanted him to take them homeD.he is emotionally attached to his own country正确答案:D 涉及知识点:名词15.The fact that Huynh is prejudiced can be seen from all of the followingexcep______.A.Vietnamese crowds do not accept her as one of themB.Other tennis players want to beat herC.Not many people like to greet herD.Huynh’s coaches don’t select her for single events she is strong in正确答案:C 涉及知识点:名词Roger Federer Lights up the Arabian Night罗杰? Plenty of people will be glad Tim Henman was not here to trouble Roger Federer once more last night,as the seedings said he should have been.Popular with the expatriates though he may be,and capable of upsetting Federer though he undoubtedly is,there is nothing quite so stirring as seeing one of the most gifted world No l s of all in full cry. Instead of struggling with his jinx player,Federer imposed a spell of his own.He beat Andrei Pavel, whom Henman beat in the Paris Masters final,by6-3,6-3,and strode the court like a ruler who knows his aura is expanding. It carried the Swiss imperiously into a semi-finals of the Dubai Championships, where he will face Jarkko Nieminen. The Finn earned his place by defeating the Dutch No 8 seed Sjeng Schalken 6-3,6-3. Federer insisted he was not at his best-”I haven’t wanted to chase the fines as much as I should,”he said. Pavel was driven to distraction as it was.He had akeady lifted himself near the level he showed when he was in the top 20.But just when he looked as if he might prolong the second set,Federer struck. He retrieved one ball from deep, outside the tramlines on the forehand side, turned and reached the next ball from short and outside the tramlines on the backhand side, and still somehow hit a controlled winner. It completed the decisive break of serve. Pavel responded by launching a spare ball towards the sky and it landed on the whiskey tables in the lrish village below. The umpire uttered a code violation warning in little more than a whisper. It was as though he felt sympathy for the Romanian. If Federer reaches tomorrow’s final he will play Spain’s Feliciano Lopez, whose Davis Cup debut came in the singles in the 2003 final in Melbourne,or Mikhail Youzhny, whose first Davis Cup experience was as a ball boy in the 1995 final in Moscow. That spurred Youzhny to make a top-level breakthrough seven yearslater, and to develop perseverance which has been revealed this week in a 6-3,1-6,6-1 quarter-final win over Rafael Nadal yesterday in heat which would have made a camel protest, and in a recovery from two days’vomiting after eating Japanese seafood.”My cap felt as if it weighed five kilos.”he said.16.From the opening paragraph,it can be inferred that______.A.Tim Henman and Roger Federer were not in good termsB.Roger Federer was hardly any match to Tim HenmanC.Tim Henman avoided meeting Roger Federer in the matchD.gifted world No ls are usually reduced to a state of tears when having lost agame正确答案:B 涉及知识点:名词17.Which of the following is NOT true according to the passage?A.Roger Federer is-Swiss.B.Roger Federer beat Andrei Pavel by 6-3,6-3.C.Jarkko Nieminen will be Federer’s next opponent.D.Henman once beat Federer by 6-3,6-3. 18.It seemed that Andrei Pavel______.A.played nearly at his highest level during the matchB.nearly beat Federer in the second setC.had a break of serve by FedererD.was completely controlled by Federer正确答案:A 涉及知识点:名词19.It can be inferred from the passage that______.A.Pavel lost the game because his last ball flew towards the skyB.Pavel was not happy with the umpireC.Pavel lost his temper when defeatedD.the umpire felt sympathetic for Pavel for he was a Romanian正确答案:C 涉及知识点:名词20.The author made a special mention of Mikhail Youzhny’s win at the quarter final because______.A.he was greatly impressed by Youzhny’s experience as a ball boyB.he admired Youzhny’s perseverance during the matchC.Youzhny was as persevering as a camelD.Youzhny took to Japanese seafood which made him very weak正确答案:B 涉及知识点:名词。

For more than 30 years, I have been wondering about L.R. Generson. On one of our first Christmases together, my husband gave me a complete set of Dickens. There were 20 volumes, bound in gray cloth with black corners, old but in good condition. Stamped on the flyleaf of each volume, in faded block letters, was the name of the previous owner: L.R. Generson, M.D.,Bronx, NY.That Dickens set is one of the best presents anyone has ever given me. A couple of the books are still brand-new, but others - Bleak House, David Copperfield, and especially Great Expectations - have been read and re-read almost to pieces. Over the years, they have keptme company. And so, in his silent mysterious way, has L.R. Generson.Did he love the books as much as I do? Who was he? On a whim, I Googled him. There wasn’t much - a single mention on a veterans’ website of a World War II named Leonard Generson. But I did find a Dr. Richard Generson, an oral surgeon living in New Jersey. Since Generson is not a common name, I decided to write to him.Dr. Generson was kind enough to write back. He told me that his father, Leonard Richard Generson, was born in 1909. He lived in New York City but went to medical school in Basel, Switzerland. He spoke 10 languages fluently. As anobstetrician and gynecologist, he opened a practice in the Bronx shortly before World War II. His son described him as “an extremely patriotic individual”; right aft er Pearl Harbor he closed his practice and enlisted. He served throughout the war as a general surgeon with an airborne special forces unit inEurope, where he became one of the war’s most highly decorated physicians.Leonard Generson’s son didn’t remember theDickens set, though he told me that there were always a lot of novels in the house. His mother probably “cleaned house” after his father’s death in 1977 - the same year my husband bought the set in a used book store.I found this letter very moving, with its brief portrait of an intelligent, brave man and his life of service. At the same time, it made me question my presumption that somehow L.R. Generson and I were connected because we’d owned the same set of books. The letter both told me a little about him, and told me that I would never really know anything about him- and why should I? His son must have been startled to hear from a stranger on such a fragile pretext. What had I been thinking? One possible answer is that I’ve read too much Dickens. In the world of a Dickens novel, everything is connected to everything else. Orphans find families. Lovers are joined. Ancient mysteries are solved and old scores are settled. Questions are answered. Stories end.Leonard Generson’s life touched mine onlylightly, through the coincidence of a set of books. But there are other lives he touched more deeply. The next time I read a Dickens novel, I will think of him and his military service and his 10 languages. And I will think of the hundreds of babies he must have delivered, who are now in the middle of their own lives and their own stories.

Stonehenge, England —The prehistoric monument of Stonehenge stands tall in the British countryside as one of the last remnants of the Neolithic Age. Recently it has also become the latest symbol of another era: the new fiscal austerity.Renovations — including a plan to replace the site’s run-down visitors center with one almost five times bigger and to close a busy road that runs along the 5,000-year-old monument —had to be mothballed in June. The British government had suddenly withdrawn £10 million, or $16 million, in financing for the project as part of a budget squeeze.Stonehenge, once a temple with giant stone slabs aligned in a circle to mark the passage of the sun, is among the most prominent victims of the government’s spending cuts. The decision was heavily criticized by local lawmakers, especially because Stonehenge, a UnescoWorld Heritage site, was part of London’s successful bid to host the 2012 Olympic Games. The shabby visitors center there now is already too small for the 950,000 people who visit Stonehenge each year, let alone the additional onslaught of tourists expected for the Games, the lawmakers say.Stonehenge is the busiest tourist attraction in Britain’s southwest, topping even Windsor Castle. But no major improvements have been made to the facilities there since they were built 40 years ago.For now, portable toilets lead from a crammed parking lot, via a makeshift souvenir shop in a tent, to a ticket office opposite a small kiosk that sells coffee and snacks. The overhaul was scheduled for next spring. Plans by the architectural firm Denton Corker Marshall would keep the stone monument itself unchanged. But the currentticket office and shop would be demolished and a new visitors center would be built on the other side of the monument, about two and a half kilometers, or 1.5 miles, from the stones. The center would include a shop almost five times the size of the current one, a proper restaurant, three times as many parking spots and an exhibition space to provide more information about Stonehenge’s history.A transit system would shuttle visitors between the center and the stones while footpaths would encourage tourists to walk to the monument and explore the surrounding burial hills. The closed road would be grassed over to improve the surrounding landscape.Last year, the £27 million project won the backing of former Prime Minister Gordon Brown. After more than 25 years of bickering with local communities about how and where to build the new center, planning permission was granted in January. Construction was supposed to start next year and be completed in time for the Olympics — but the economic downturn has changed those plans. The new prime minister, David Cameron, has reversed many of his predecessor’s promises as part of a program to cut more than £99 billion annually over the next five years to help close a gaping budget deficit. The financing for Stonehenge fell in the first round of cuts, worth about £6.2 billion, from the budget for the current year, along with support for a hospital and the British Film Institute.English Heritage, a partly government-financed organization that owns Stonehenge and more than 400 other historic sites in the country, is now aggressively looking for private donations. But the economic downturn has made the endeavor more difficult.Hunched over architectural renderings of the new center, Loraine Knowles, Stonehenge’s project director, said she was disappointed that the government hadwithdrawn money while continuing to support museums in London, like the Tate and the British Museum. But Ms. Knowles said she was hopeful that English Heritage could raise the money elsewhere. Stonehenge, she said, could then also become “a shining example of how philanthropy could w ork.”。

(16)(1/1)Section ⅠEnglish Chinese TranslationTranslate the following two passages into Chinese .第1题This month, the United Nations Development Program made water and sanitation the centerpiece of its flagship publication, the Human Development Report.Claims of a "water apartheid," where poor people pay more for water than the rich, are bound to attract attention. But what are the economics behind the problem, and how can it be fixed? In countries that have trouble delivering clean water to their people, a lack of infrastructure is often the culprit. People in areas that are not served by public utilities have to rely on costlier ways of getting water, such as itinerant water trucks and treks to wells. Paradoxically, as the water sources get costlier, the water itself tends to be more dangerous. Water piped by utilities—to the rich and the poor alike—is usually cleaner than water trucked in or collected from an outdoor tank. The problem exists not only in rural areas but even in big cities, said Hakan Bjorkman, program director of the UN agency in Thailand. Further, subsidies made to local water systems often end up benefiting people other than the poor, he added. The agency proposes a three-step solution. First, make access to 20 liters, or 5 gallons, of clean water a day a human right. Next, make local governments accountable for delivering this service. Last, invest in infrastructure to link people to water mains. The report says governments, especially in developing countries, should spend at least 1 percent of gross domestic product on water and sanitation. It also recommends that foreign aid be more directed toward these problems. Clearly, this approach relies heavily on government intervention, something Bjorkman readily acknowledged. But there are some market-based approaches as well.By offering cut-rate connections to poor people to the water mainline, the private water utility in Abidjan, Ivory Coast, has steadily increased access to clean water, according to the agency´s report. A subsidy may not even be necessary, despite the agency´s proposals, if a country can harness the economic benefits of providing clean water.People who receive clean water are much less likely to die from water-borne diseases—a common malady in the developing world—and much more likely to enjoy long, productive, taxpaying lives that can benefit their host countries. So if a government is trying to raise financing to invest in new infrastructure, it might find receptive ears in private credit markets—as long as it can harness the return. Similarly, private companies may calculate that it is worth bringing clean water to an area if its residents are willing to pay back the investment over many years. In the meantime, some local solutions are being found. In Thailand, Bjorkman said, some small communities are taking challenges like water access upon themselves. "People organize themselves in groups to leverage what little resources they have to help their communities," he said. "That´s especially true out in the rural areas. They invest their money in revolving funds and saving schemes, and they invest themselves to improve their villages." It is not always easy to take these solutions and replicate them in other countries, though, Assembling a broad menu of different approaches can be the first step in finding the right solution for a given region or country.______________下一题(1/1)Section ⅡChinese-English TranslationTranslate the following passage into English .

Electronic mail has become an extremely important and popular means of communication. The convenience and efficiency of electronic mail are threatened by the extremely rapid growth in the volume of unsolicited commercial electronic mail. Unsolicited commercial electronic mail is currently estimated to account for over half of all electronic mall traffic, up from an estimated 7 percent in 2001, and the volume continues to rise. Most of these messages are fraudulent or deceptive in one or more respects. The receipt of unsolicited commercial electronic mail may result in costs to recipients who cannot refuse to accept such mail and who incur costs for the storage of such mail, or for the time spent accessing, reviewing, and discarding such mail, or for both. The receipt of a large number of unwanted messages also decreases the convenience of electronic mall and creates a risk that wanted electronic mail messages, both commercial and noncommercial, will be lost, overlooked, or discarded amidst the larger volume of unwanted messages, thus reducing the reliability and usefulness of electronic mail to the recipient. Some commercial electronic mail contains material that many recipients may consider vulgar or pornographic in nature. The growth in unsolicited commercial electronic mail imposes significant monetary costs on providers of Internet access services, businesses, and educational and nonprofit institutions that carry and receive such mail, as there is a finite volume of mail that such providers, businesses, and institutions can handle without further investment in infrastructure. Many senders of unsolicited commercial electronic mail purposefully disguise the source of such mall. Many senders of unsolicited commercial electronic mall purposefully include misleading information in the messages' subject lines in order to induce the recipients to view the messages. While some senders of commercial electronic mail messages provide simpleand reliable ways for recipients to reject (or 'opt-out' of) receipt of commercial electronic mall from such senders in the future, other senders provide no such 'opt-out' mechanism, or refuse to honor the requests of recipients not to receive electronic mail from such senders in the future, or both. Many senders of bulk unsolicited commercial electronic mail use computer programs to gather large numbers of electronic mail addresses on an automated basis from Internet websites or online services where users must post their addresses in order to make full use of the website or service. The problems associated with the rapid growth and abuse of unsolicited commercial electronic mall cannot be solved by the government alone. The development and adoption of techno-logical approaches and the pursuit of cooperative efforts with other countries will be necessary as well. 91. According to the passage, efficiency of e-mail is threatened by ______ A. heavy e-mail traffic B. fraudulent e-mail messages C. large volume of messages D. increasing amount of unwanted e-mail 92. Which of the following is NOT true about unwanted e-mail? A. It costs money to receive them. B. It's free to store them. C. It takes time to access them. D. It takes time to throw them away. 93. Unwanted e-mail may ______ A. cause companies to fail in business B. cause wanted e-mail messages to lose C. damage the credit of a company D. do good to a small company 94. "Pornographic" in Paragraph 3 probably means ______A. decentB. instructionalC. sexualD. commercial 95. What does unwanted e-mail messages do to the providers of the Internet services? A. Raising their cost. B. Raising the Internet speed. C. Improving their business. D. Attracting investment. 96. "Disguise" in Paragraph 4 is closest in meaning to ______A. revealB. hideC. deliverD. post 97. The word "induce" in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ______A. cheatB. introduceC. provideD. harm 98. "Opt-out" mechanism is probably ______ A. a machine that can be attached to your computer B. a button that you can make a choice to read or not to read C. a software that you can play a computer game D. an e-mail that says some good words to you 99. It can be inferred from Paragraph 6 that bulk unsolicited commercial e-mail will probably spread ______A. harmful virusB. unpleasant newsC. advertisementsD. adult jokes 100. The unwanted e-mail problem can be solved if ______ A. the government takes action B. a new technology is adopted C. more people are aware of the problem D. joint efforts are made and new technology is used Section 3: Cloze Test (20 points) In the following passage, there are 20 blanks representing words that are missing from the context. 5月翻译资格考题三级英语笔译实务试卷及答案试题部分:Section 1: English-Chinese Translation (英译汉) Translate the following passage into Chinese.Freed by warming, waters once locked beneath ice are gnawing at coastal settlements around the Arctic Circle. In Bykovsky, a village of 457 residents at the tip of a fin-shaped peninsula on Russia's northeast coast, the shoreline is collapsing, creeping closer and closer to houses and tanks of heating oil,at a rate of 15 to 18 feet, or 5 to 6 meters, a year. Eventually, homes will be lost as more ice melts each summer, and maybe all of Bykovsky, too.“It is practically all ice — permafrost —and it is thawing. ” The 4 million Russian people who live north of the Arctic Circle are feeling the effects of warming in many ways. A changing climate presents new opportunities, but it also threatens their environment, the stability of their homes, and,for those whose traditions rely on the ice-bound wilderness, the preservation of their culture.A push to develop the North, quickened by the melting of the Arctic seas, carries its own rewards and dangers for people in the region. Discovery of vast petroleum fields in the Barents and Kara Seas has raised fears of catastrophic accidents as ships loaded with oil or liquefied gas churn through the fisheries off Scandinavia, headed for the eager markets of Europe and North America. Land that was untouched could be tainted by air and water pollution as generators, smokestacks and large vehicles sprout to support the growing energy industry.Coastal erosion is a problem in Alaska as well, forcing the United States to prepare to relocate several Inuit coastal villages at a projected cost of US $ 100 million or more for each one.Across the Arctic, indigenous tribes with cultural traditions shaped by centuries of living in extremes of cold and ice are noticing changes in weather and wildlife. They are trying to adapt, but it can be confounding. In Finnmark, the northernmost province of Norway, the Arctic landscape unfolds in late winter as an endless snowy plateau, silent but for the cries of the reindeer and the occasional whine of a snowmobile herding them.A changing Arctic is felt there, too, though in another way. "The reindeer arebecoming unhappy," said Issat Eira, a 31-year-old reindeer herder.Few countries rival Norway when it comes to protecting the environment and preserving indigenous customs. The state has lavished its oil wealth on the region, and as a result Sami culture has enjoyed something of a renaissance. And yet no amount of government support can convince Eira that his livelihood, intractably entwined with the reindeer, is not about to change. Like a Texas cattleman he keeps the size of his herd secret. But he said warmer temperatures in fall and spring are melting the top layers of snow, which then refreeze as ice, making it harder for his reindeer to dig through to the lichen they eat."The people who are making the decisions, they are living in the south and they are living in towns,”said Eira, sitting beside a birch fire inside his lavvu, a home made of reindeer hides. "They don't mark the change of weather. It is only people who live in nature and get resources from nature who mark it. ”Section 2: Chinese-English Translation (汉译英) Translate the following passage into English.

Deep development of economic globalization and vast improvement of science and technology contribute to Asian countries’ making use of foreign capital, importing advance technology, developing international market and promoting the development of national economy. However, security situation in some part of Asia still remains unoptimistic and the fight against terrorism still needs to be implemented thoroughly.

Chasing Riches From Africa to Europe and Finding Only SqualorPALOS DE LA FRONTERA, Spain — Back home in Gambia, Amadou Jallow was, at 22, a lover of reggae who had just finished college and had landed a job teaching science in a high school. But Europe beckoned. In his West African homeland, Mr. Jallow‟s salary was the equivalent of just 50 euros a month, barely enough for the necessities, he said. And everywhere in his neighborhood in Serekunda, Gambia‟s largest city, there was talk of easy money to be made in Europe. Now he laughs bitterly about all that talk. He lives in a patch of woods here in southern Spain, just outside the village of Palos de la Frontera, with hundreds of other immigrants. They have built their homes out of plastic sheeting and cardboard, unsure if the water they drink from an open pipe is safe. After six years on the continent, Mr. Jallow is rail thin, and his eyes have a yellow tinge.“We are not bush people,” he said recently as he gathered twigs to start a fire. “You think you are civilized. But this is how we live here. We suffer here.”The political upheaval in Libya and elsewhere in North Africa has opened the way for thousands of new migrants to make their way to Europe across the Mediterranean. Already some 25,000 have reached the island of Lampedusa, Italy, and hundreds more have arrived at Malta. The boats, at first, brought mostly Tunisians. But lately there have been more sub-Saharans.Experts say thousands more — many of whom have been moving around North Africa trying to get to Europe for years, including Somalis, Eritreans, Senegalese and Nigerians — are likely to follow, sure that a better life awaits them. But for Mr. Jallow and for many others who arrived before them, often after days at sea without food or water, Europe has offered hardships they never imagined. These days Mr. Jallow survives on two meals a day, mostly a leaden paste made from flour and oil, which he stirs with a branch.“It keeps the hunger away,” he said. The authorities estimate that there are perhaps 10,000 immigrants living in the woods in the southern Spanish province of Andalusia, a region known for its crops of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, and there are thousands more migrants in areas that produce olives, oranges and vegetables. Most of them have stories that echo Mr. Jallow‟s.From the road, their encampments look like igloos tucked among the trees. Up close, the squalor is clear. Piles of garbage and flies are everywhere. Old clothes, stiff from dirt and rain, hang from branches.“There is everything in there,” said Diego Cañamero, the leader of the farm workers‟ union in Andalusia, which tries to advocate for the men. “You have rats and snakes and mice and fleas.”The men in the woods do not call home with the truth, though. They send pictures of themselves posing next to Mercedes cars parked on the street, the kind of pictures that Mr. Jallow says he fell for so many years ago. Now he shakes his head toward his neighbors, who will not talk to reporters.“So many lies,” he said. “It is terrible what they are doing. But they are embarrassed.”Even now, though, Mr. Jallow will not consider going back to Gambia. “I would prefer to die here,” he said. “I cannot go home empty-handed. If I went home, they would be saying, …What have you been doing with yourself, Amadou?‟ They think in Europe there is money all over.”The immigrants — virtually all of them are men — cluster by nationality and look for work on the farms. But Mr. Cañamero says they are offered only the least desirable work, like handling pesticides, and little of it at that. Most have no working papers.Occasionally, the police bring bulldozers to tear down the shelters. But the men, who have usually used their family‟s life savings to get here, are mostly le ft alone — the conditions they live under are an open secret in the nearby villages. The mayor of Palos de La Frontera did not return phone calls about the camp. But Juan José Volante, the mayor of nearby Moguer, which has an even larger encampment, issued a statement saying the town did not have enough money to help the men. “The problem is too big for us,” he said. “Of course, we would like to do more.”On a warm spring night, some of the men play cards sitting on the plastic pesticide containers and broken furniture they have collected from the trash. Some drift into town to socialize and buy supplies, if they have money. But they are not welcome in the local bars. During the World Cup last year, the farm workers‟ union arranged for a truck to set up a giant television screen in the forest so the men could watch it.“The bars don‟t want them,” Mr. Cañamero said. “They say the men smell bad and they are not good for business. Most of them are Muslim, and they don‟t buy alcohol.”Mr. Jallow had his mother‟s blessing but had not told his father about his plans when he left home on his bicycle in 2002, heading for Senegal, where he hoped to find a boat to the Canary Islands. He ended up in Guinea-Bissau, where, one night two years later, he got word that a boat for Europe would leave in a few hours. There were so many people aboard — 131 — that he was barely able to move for the 11 days he spent at sea. The last five days were without food and water.Passengers were vomiting constantly, he said. The young man sitting next to him died one night, though no one noticed until the morning. His body was thrown overboard.“A lot of us could not walk when they took us off the boat,” he recalled. “I could still walk, but it was like I was drunk. I put myself in God‟s hands that he would take care of me.”After 40 days in a detention center in the Canary Islands he was brought to the mainland and released with a standard order to leave the country. “I thought I was going to be a millionaire,” Mr. Jallow said. His mother managed to get an uncle on the phone who said he would meet him at a train station. But when he arrived there, his uncle‟s phone rang and rang. Later, he learned his uncle lived nowhere near the station.

In the past ten years, China's economy has made significant advance and its contribution to world economic growth has been growing. China's average tariff level has dropped from 15.3 percent to 9.8 percent, which is lower than the WTO requirement for developing countries. Its total imports in this period have reached 8.5 trillion U.S. dollars, creating a huge market for other countries. In the face of the complex and volatile global economic environment, China has taken targeted measures this year to strengthen and improve macro control, with focus on stabilizing prices, adjusting the economic structure, ensuring people's well-being, and promoting harmony. The Chinese economy is driven more by its internal dynamism than policy stimulus. And it is moving in the direction consistent with the objectives of macro control. To sustain the sound momentum of China's economic and social development, we will continue to pursue development in a scientific way and redouble efforts to shift the growth model. We will continue to strengthen and improve macro control, and maintain a balance between achieving steady and fast economic growth, adjusting the economic structure and managing inflation expectation. Putting people's interests first and taking a holistic approach to development, we will work harder to achieve all-round, balanced and sustainable development, deepen reform and opening-up, and improve people's well-being. we will have a bright prospect for the Chinese economy. And continued steady and fast economic growth in China will serve the interest of global economic growth.

2012年5月翻译资格考试三级英语笔译真题及答案试题部分:Section 1: English-Chinese Translation (英译汉) Translate the following passage into Chinese.Spain — Back home in Gambia, Amadou Jallow was, at 22, a lover of reggae who had just finished college and had landed a job teaching science in a high school. But Europe beckoned. In his West African homeland, Mr. Jallows salary was the equivalent of just 50 euros a month, barely enough for the necessities, he said. And everywhere in his neighborhood in Serekunda, Gambias largest city, there was talk of easy money to be made in Europe. Jallow is rail thin, and his eyes have a yellow tinge. “We are not bush people,” he said recently as he gathered twigs to start a fire. But lately there have been more sub-Saharans Experts say thousands more —many of whom have been moving around North Africa trying to get to Europe for years, including Somalis, Eritreans, Senegalese and Nigerians — are likely to follow, sure that a better life awaits them. The authorities estimate that there are perhaps 10,000 immigrants living in the woods in the southern Spanish province of Andalusia, a region known for its crops of strawberries, raspberries and blueberries, and there are thousands more migrants in areas that produce olives, oranges andvegetables. Most of them have stories that echo Mr. Jallows From the road, their encampments look like igloos tucked among the trees. Up close, the squalor is clear. Piles of garbage and flies are everywhere. Old clothes, stiff from dirt and rain, hang from branches.“There is everything in there,” said Diego Ca?amero, the leader of the farm workers union in Andalusia, which tries to advocate for the men. If I went home, they would be saying? What have you been doing with yourself, Amadou? They think in Europe there is money all over.”The immigrants — virtually all of them are men — cluster by nationality and look for work on the farms. But Mr. Ca?amero says they are offered only the least desirable work, like handling pesticides, and little of it at that. Most have no working papers.Occasionally, the police bring bulldozers to tear down the shelters. But the men, who have usually used their familys life savings to get here, are mostly left alone — the conditions they live under are an open secret in the nearby villages.Section 2: Chinese-English Translation (汉译英) Translate the following passage into English.
