The students do after-school activities for one and a half hours every day. We needn’t do a lot of homework. Besides that, my dream school looks like a big garden. There are many kinds of flowers around the modern buildings. If I want to have a rest, I can lie on the grass, listen to music by the lake or look at the flowers from the classroom windows. The teachers here are not only our teachers but also our good friends. The students are polite and friendly. We all know how to keep our school clean and tidy. There is no litter around the campus. I love my dream school. We will grow up to be happier there.2. Bill and Jane were coasting on a hill. Down the hill went the sled. Bill steered. Jane held on tightly. Was she dreaming? She landed in a big pile of snow. Where was Bill? He must have gone all the way down the long side to the end of the hill. Now, Bill came in sight plodding up the hill. Jane laughed as she called him. They were so glad to be together.3. Nothing can be more exciting than success to a man. But you must face many difficulties before you can succeed. Life is a process of struggle for success.4. When I was in grade four in primary school, my father taught me how to use computer. After that, I was very interested in playing on computer. I watched movies, played computer games, searched the Internet and listened to the music on computer. Because my father must work in his computer, so he bought another for me. I was very happy that I had my own computer. It was put in the study. I am always very careful to use my computer, because I am worried I would break it. I often chat with my net friends. Because of my computer, I make many friends who have many hobbies in common. Of course, I use my computer in study. There are resources on the Internet. I can learn more after class. It does great help to me.5. In 1929, three years after his flight over the North Pole, the American explorer, R.E. Byrd, successfully flew over the South Pole for the first time. Though, at first, Byrd and his team were able to take a great many photographs of the mountains that lay below, they soon ran into serious trouble. At one point, it seemed certain that their plane would crash. It could only get over the mountains if it rose to 10,000 feet. Byrd at once ordered his partners to throw out two heavy food sacks. The plane was then able to rise and it cleared the mountains by 4000 feet.6. What is the low carbon life? We can do a lot in our daily life to achieve the goal of living low carbon life. First, we’d better turn off lights if possible and spend less time watching TV or surfing the Internet. Saving water also matters much. Besides, weshould sort out the rubbish, hoping that we might recycle some, which will surely benefit us a great deal. In addition, we suggest using handkerchiefs instead of tissues so that we can prevent more trees from being cut down. More importantly, when we go out, walking, riding bikes or taking buses should be our first choice, which contributes to a cleaner world.7. As we all know, water is essential in our daily life. We drink water every day; we use water to wash things and cook food and we also use water to make machines. People can't live without water. Though about 75% of the earth is covered with water, only 3% of it can be used. So we must save water by having a shower instead of a bath. We can save water by fixing dripping taps immediately and we can also save water by not washing under a running tap. Just do everything that we can do to save water.8. That was a morning in the early of June. I took a bus to my school. The sky was gray with the gloomy clouds congregating gradually along the far eastern horizon. "There must be a heavy rain soon." I spoke to myself. When I hurried into the classroom, the sky, gray before, was replaced now by black clouds. Several minutes later, I saw the lightening split the clouds and heard the thunders following. Suddenly, the curtain of rain fell and the wind blew. With the rain forming like a fog, the sky became bright. I took several deep breathes. I felt comfortable. The heavy rain lasted three hours and stopped when the class was over. The air was so fresh and the sky was so clear. I felt like a new man myself.9. Everything begins to grow in spring. The trees turn green, and the flowers come out. On the playground, in the fields, on each side of the road, the young grassgrows everywhere. Spring also arrives in our school. Come and see, behind our teaching building, there are some small pear trees covered with white flowers, on both sides of it, there are some other flowers smiling at you, Some are yellow, some are red. Look, there are some kites flying in the sky. The spring wind is blowing. The sun is shining brightly. Some boys are playing games in the sun, Listen, a group of girls are singing "Where’s spring?" It sounds like the singing of lark birds. All these make me think that spring is here, spring is there, and spring is just in our school.10. Elephant is the largest animal on land today. It weights some ninety kilograms and is about one meter high when born. When it is 12 years old, it grows over three meters and does not grow any more. Elephant is usually gray in color, having a long trunk with large ivory tusks protruding from each side of its mouth. Usually moving in groups and caring for each other. For many years people have used the strength of these powerful animals to move trees and heavy logs. Elephant is a vital tool for people to do many things that would normally be impossible. Elephant will continue to be one of the greatest creatures that man has ever come into contact with. Its size, beauty, and power will forever be useful to man.11. We wouldn't believe that it was a village. The buildings for the farmers were very beautiful, the streets were very clean and there were many flowers in front of the houses. In the middle of the village there was a school with a wonderful building and a large playground. All the children in the village study there. The farmers got richer by planting vegetables and raising silkworms. In their houses there were color TV sets, fridges, washing machines, new furniture and even motorbikes. All these showed the farmers' life was getting better and better. The great changes had attracted foreigners.Today some of them would come to visit it. We were happy for the farmers. We hope the farmers will be richer and happier.12. The Yangtze River is the longest river in China. And it’s important and helpful to Chinese. But these few days the Yangtze River is bringing us serious floods. Many villages were destroyed by floods. The floods made millions of people lose their homes, relatives and friends. Many children can’t go to school as usual. Now the foods have drawn the attention of the whole world. People from abroad have offered their help too. In China, millions of soldiers are busy fighting against the floods. They are working very hard. Many of them have lost their lives in their attempt to save the villagers. I believe most of the people will return to their homeland in the near future.13. Nowadays, many Chinese can enjoy the luxury of owning a private car. Having a car of your own means no more traveling to work on crowded buses or subway trains, and you can drop off the children at school on the way. Moreover, it also means that you can enjoy the weekends and holidays better, because with a car you can go to places where the regular buses and trains can not go. However, there are drawbacks to own a car. For one thing, with the increase in car ownership in recent years, the roads are becoming more and more crowded, often making the journey to be a nightmare. For another, it is not cheap to run a car, the prices of gasoline and repairs are constantly rising, and you have to pay for a license and insurance coverage.14. Internet is coming into our life. It brings us not only a lot of convenience, but also troubles. Some students use Internet as a tool to study. They look up the meanings of the words, a translated form of a sentence, the information of a company or a famousperson etc. They also read news or send e-mails through it. Internet helps them learn more and study well. On the other hand, some students play games, chat with friends, see the pictures or films even the unhealthy ones on the Internet the whole day. They are not interested in their subjects. It’s very dangerous for them! The Internet advantages and disadvantages are shown clearly to us. I think we should make good use of it and stay away from the unhealthy websites.15. Suzhou is a beautiful place in Southeast of China. It was built over 2500 years ago. So Suzhou is an old city with a long history. It’s famous for its gardens and Hanshan Temple. We are all proud of them. Many foreign tourists come to see them. In Suzhou, There are lots of old constructions like Tiger Hill, Bessie Pagoda and so on. After visiting them, you’ll be tired. But don’t be worried. There are also lots of snack shops in Suzhou. They are different from those in Western countries. Suzhou is a modern city as well as an old city. There are lots of tall buildings and many other modern constructions in Suzhou, too. You can find hundreds of people in smart clothes in the street. What a beautiful city it is!16. Everybody has a dream, because we’re dreamers. Sometimes the dream is perfect, sometimes it’s special, sometimes it’s sweet. In my dream, there are some children. I always play games with them and enjoy ourselves. In my dream, there is a special sky. In our world, the sky is blue, but the sky of my dream is pink and some angels are having fun there. In my dream, white bird can fly high, flowers can sing songs, frogs have a jump race, tomatoes are blue, potatoes are yellow and all the things are different. In my dream, Chinese people, Korean people, Japanese people, Italian people, Spanish people, American people and Russian people are hand in hand. All thepeople smile forever. It is a peaceful world. In my dream, everything is wonderful, but our world is not. So we should make our world get more beautiful!17. In current society, people have known the importance of keeping healthy and good life habit. In the past, people ate three meals at home, and they ate more vegetables and less meat and fish. They were very strong and seldom went to see doctors. Now life is better, people eat more meat, fish, eggs and other food with more fat. They often go out for good meals with their families and friends. But they get easy to be ill, Why? I think more meat and fish, less exercise are bad for health. Good rest, less meat and fish, more vegetables and enough exercise are good for health. We should eat fruit and drink milk every day. So the better we get into good eating habits, the happier our life becomes.18. I like Christmas, it is just like our Spring Festival. Because we can spend time with our families, friends and classmates during Christmas. When it is snowy, Christmas becomes much more lovely. I can imagine I am in a fairy tale, the girl who sold the matches is my friend, the ugly duck becoming more and more beautiful and so on. What a beautiful place! So we can also call Christmas “snowy lovely day.”On Christmas day, shops are red and green. There are so many Christmas cards, Christmas hats, Christmas dolls and many colorful things. We can give a card or a doll to our friends and say “M erry Christmas.” By the way, I think studying can also become much more interesting.19. Chinese Lunar New Year, or Spring Festival falls on January 1st according to the lunar calendar, usually around the late January or early February. As the start ofspring as well as a new year, it is the most important celebration of the year. On the Eve, there is a big dinner for the family when each member returns to get together. The biggest New Year party is held on CCTV. Hundreds of people gather there, meanwhile millions of others all over the country were sitting in front of the screen to watch excellent performances. The bell strikes twelve at midnight to welcome the coming of the New Year or Spring. People start to set off firecrackers and say "Happy New Year" to each other.20. With the development of the modern technology, private car is no longer a luxurious thing for ordinary people. More and more people drive to work instead of going by bus. The popularization of private car has many advantages. First,it is very convenient and time-saving and you can drive your own car to the workplace instead of waiting for the crowded bus and afraid of being late for working. Second,it can also improve the traffic structure, and help mitigate the stress of the traffic. Third, the popularization of private car can help to promote the car industry and any other interrelated industries. I believe that in the future the private car will become the most important vehicle and we can't live without it.21. Smile, how warm the word is! It can make anyone happy and this happiness is from the bottom of heart. It’s not like enthusiastic laughter, but just warm, makes your heart warm. Mother’s smile is like a spring wind, so gentle when you are sad and it can make you happy again; when you fail, it can make you stand up and work hard again; when you give up, it can make you try your best again…Smile, so easy, but also so useful. So, let’s learn to smile. Everyone needs others smile. When we give others a smile, we will feel happy, too. And maybe next time, when you need a smile, the personwho received your smile will give it to you. Let’s learn to smile often. I believe it can even make the whole world warm. Living with a smile, every day will be sunshine.22. Everybody knows that there is the serious problem of water pollution on the earth. Yes, water pollution is increasing. Look! The water in the river is getting dirtier and dirtier. Most of fish in the water have died, and we can’t swim in the water. My grandfather says, when he was very little, the water in the river was very clean. He often swam in the river with his friends. That was before, but now we can’t see such clean rivers. Let’s protect the water from pollution, because we can’t live without water. The water is really important to us all.23. The way of life that a group of people builds up over a long period of time becomes the people's culture. Culture includes the people's values and beliefs as well as their technical competency. Some aspects of culture are learned in a formal setting, such as a school, while other aspects are learned informally in the process of day-to-day living. A culture is always changing. Changes in some culture often come about by borrowing form another culture and by invention. To enrich the culture of our nation, we are constantly adapting new inventions and new ideas into our way of life.24. Although the world develops much faster and better, the resources on the earth get fewer and fewer. In order to protect them, something must be done. Save water as water is the source of life. No water,no life. So it's very important for us to do so. Not only should we protect drinking water and stop polluting it,but also make full use of it. Save electricity as it is crucial. We can't imagine what the life will be likewithout it. Don't forget to turn off lights or other electric machines when we finish working. Save forests . Please stop cutting them down and use recycled paper instead. Make our world a green one to live in. We can save resources in this way. I believe we can make the world a better place to live in.25. One afternoon in September, 1993 in Datong, Shanxi Province, a two-year-old boy happened to fall into a deep ditch, which is only 40 centimeters wide but 45 meters deep. The ditch is so narrow that the adults are not able to go down. At that time, an 11-year-old Young boy named Zhang Tianxi, who is a miner's son decided to save the little boy. Zhang is thin enough to go down to the bottom of the ditch. He was brave enough and made an effort to carry the little child to the surface of the ground. It took him about 45 minutes to finish the job. People sang high praise for his brave behavior. And Zhang was awarded the prize for the National Ten Finest Children.26. Last year, I visited Beijing. I always looked forward to visiting there. So I was so excited that I couldn’t fall asleep on the night before I started. I got up early and packed my backpack for the journey. In my pack, I put a camera, some clothes, a cell phone and so on. It took me 15 hours to go there by train. I visited some places of interest in Beijing, such as the Great Wall, the Ming Tombs and so on. They are very beautiful. I enjoyed myself. I felt tired but excited because I have learned a lot about the history of the city. As soon as I arrived home, I phoned my classmates and told them about the trip.27. I was born in a beautiful town with high mountains around it. The mountains are covered with all kinds of green bamboos. Through the town runs a small stream. It'ssaid that a new railway is going to be built to the east of the town and a bamboo factory to the west. All the children of the school age can go to school. If anyone is ill, he can go to see the doctor in the newly-built hospital. People in the town are hard-working and never take the backwardness lying down. Though they are having a richer and better life, they are not satisfied with what they have got. They are working hard to build their town into a modern one.28. Our class has made a survey. "Don't keep your worries." About fifty percent of the students in our class are worried about their homework and studies. And they feel stressed too much. About thirty percent of the students think their parents are too strict with them. They don't often talk with their parents. The other twenty percent of them say they are weak in health. They complain that they almost have no time for their hobbies or exercise. So I hope that our teachers will give us less homework. And I advise our parents to allow us to spend some time with our parents doing outdoor activities. I think our teachers should give us less homework to do. And our parents are supposed to talk with us often. In this way, we will be happier.29. It’s hard to make friends if you stay alone all the time. It’s easier to make friends when you have similar interests. Don’t be afraid to show people what you are really good at. Talk about the things you like and do your best. Look at people in the eyes when you talk to them. Be a good listener. Let people talk about themselves before talking about yourself. Be friendly to a lot of people. Try to help your friends when they are in trouble because a friend in need is a friend indeed. That way you’ll have a bigger group to choose from and have more chances to make friends.30. Opportunity is one of the elements of success. But opportunities don't come often. And not all the opportunities can certainly lead to success. Moreover, opportunities are usually disguised as hard work, therefore most people don't recognize them. So if you want to achieve something, you must make efforts and get prepared. Otherwise, you will take no advantage of opportunities when they come to you. In my opinion, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone in our society, but only those who have made enough preparations and are highly talented can make use of them to achieve their purpose.31. The lucky-number has become popular in daily life of modern society. For example, the number eight means big money which people like most, while the number four means unlucky. Some people believe lucky numbers so deeply that they will afford a telephone with numbers without four and others which is bad in their mind. They argue that the lucky-number really can bring good luck, and, at least, no evidence testify that they can not. As far as I am concerned, there is no relationship between the numbers and luck, for the reason that numbers themselves are given certain meaning for the purpose of application of mathematical. And, in addition, man should not depend on luck which, in their mind, the numbers give them.32. Nowadays more and more programs are shown every day. My favorite program is "Discovery" which is broadcasted by CCTV at 5' o’clock every other afternoon, except weekends. The program provides us with knowledge in natural and scientific aspects. I like to know about the secrets of animals and some scientific research. I acquire some knowledge about nature and science of the past, present andeven the future. It is an interesting as well as instructive program. Besides, the pictures are very vivid and beautiful. It' s really a great joy to watch it. If you don't believe what I said, just watch it by yourself, and then you will know I am right.33. The proverb "Haste makes waste" means that one may delay the time to complete one thing if he rushes to do it, because he may neglect something important in the process and has to do it again from the beginning. So we should do every step well. Take remembering English words for example, every student wants to enlarge his vocabulary. But this aim cannot be achieved in one or two days. You should stick to remember some words a day and review the words every few days. In this way you can keep the words in your mind firmly. There is no shortcut. If you want to put all the words into your brain and not to review them, you will remember nothing. So don't be hasty. Haste makes waste.34. Panda is one of the scarcest animals. People in the world like it very much. There used to be many pandas in China long ago. As the balance of nature was destroyed and the weather was getting warmer and warmer, pandas became less. But at present, the number of pandas is increasing year by year. There are now so many pandas that some are being sent to other countries so that people there can enjoy them. Nowadays, the biggest nature park for panda in China is in Sichuan. There is a research center for nature and wild life there. Scientists hope that one day they will have enough pandas to be set free and let them live in the wild again.35. Friendship is one of the greatest pleasures that people can enjoy. It is very difficult to find a better definition of friendship. A true friend does indeed find pleasurein our joy and share sorrow in our grief. Knowing how valuable friendship is, we should be very careful in our choice of a friend. We must choose someone who has a good character, whose activities are good and who shows kindness of heart. A true friend can always be trusted, loved and respected. If you tell a friend your secrets, he or she won’t tell anyone else. Friends share each o thers joys and sorrows. They help each other when they are in trouble, and cheer each other up when they are sad. The most important thing is that a friend always understands you.36. Our environment is very important for our lives . We need the fresh air, the clean water and so on. In the past, there were many trees around us, the air was fresh and the river was clean. But now, people cut down many trees. Air pollution and water pollution are very serious. The environment around us becomes very terrible. We should protect our environment. First, we should plant many trees to keep water. Second, we can ride a bike or walk to the school and work. Third, we shouldn’t throw the dirty water into the river. Fourth, we shouldn’t use the plastic bags. Finally, we can ask more people to join us.37.Almost everyone knows the famous Chinese saying:A young idler,an old beggar. Throughout history we have seen many cases in which this saying has again and again proved to be true. It goes without saying that youth is the best time of life, during which one’s mental and physical states are at their peaks. It takes relatively less time and pain to learn or accept new things in an ever-changing world. When one is young they do not have the stresses or burdens that can come from a career, family and health problems. To ensure success in different aspects of life one must always keep learning, asking questions, and be excited to live. Of course we all know:no pain, nogain. If we don’t make every effort to make good use of the advantages youth brings us,it will be impossible to achieve one’s goals. As students we should try our best to learn all our subjects so we can be prepared for the challenges we will face in the future.38. Many wild animals are facing the danger of extinction, because the environment they are living in has changed greatly. Examples of these changes are the development of cities, the use of chemicals on crops, increasing pollution, and their living areas are becoming smaller. Many of these wild animals are now confronted with a food crisis because not only are their habitats smaller, they are competing with man for resources. Man is killing off species just for gathering animal’s fur, skin, horns, teeth and meat. In order to protect our natural resources people should realize that the loss of any species is not only a loss of knowledge but of beauty. Therefore, measuresof the following should be taken: pollution standards should be stronger and heavily enforced; killing of certain rare species prohibited; and national parks should be set up as wild life reservations. Only if we human beings take some drastic measures can our beautiful mother nature preserve and flourish once again.39. Time flies like an arrow before we realize it .It is known that nothing is more precious than time. The good old proverb "time is money" reminds us that time is valuable. When time goes by, it will never return. However, it is a pity that some people don't make full use of their time .They spend a lot of time in sleeping, chatting, playing computer games or other unmeaning matters. . They don't realize that wasting time is actually equal to killing themselves. They always regret not having made great achievements. One of the reasons may be they do not make good use of time. Therefore,in order to be successful, they should first get into the habit of being on time. It’s a sign of cherishing time. Don't put off what can be done today until tomorrow. Being lazy will eventually lead to failure. Don't wait, because you don't know how long it will take when you put off your plan.40. Newspapers and websites are two major new media in the world today, both of which can provide us with lots of news and informati on. But they’re different in some ways. Newspapers enjoy a longer history and often come out daily with more reliable news and information. They can be carried and read almost anywhere you like. So many people like reading them. But they can only contain texts and photos. On the other hand, websites are quite new and popular, especially among young people. Websites have not only texts with pictures but also audios and videos, which makes stories more interesting. What’s more, they are updated from time to time. So the latest news is always seen on websites instead of in newspapers. But it is not quite convenient for people without a computer connected with the Internet to get information from websites.41. I dream that one day, I could escape from the deep sea of thick schoolbooks and live my own life with my favorite fictions: I lie freely on the green grass, smelling the spring, listening to the wind singing, breathing the fresh and cool air and dissolve my soul in nature at last. Simple and short enjoyment can bring me great satisfaction. I dream that one day the adults could throw their prejudice of comic and cartoon away. They could keep a lovely heart that can share sorrow and happiness with us while watching cartoon or doing personal things. That’s the real communication of heart to heart. I have the belief that my dreams should come true. I am looking forward to some。

The passage is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage. On August 5 10:31 p.m. PST, a rover(探测器)named Curiosity touched down safely on the surface of Mars, and I was lucky enough to have a front-row seat.My name is Clara, and when I was in Grade 6, I won the essay contest(征文比赛)NASA held to name its next Mars rover. The essay I wrote was not even 250 words long, but somehow it was enough to change my life.I still remember that cold December day, sitting in a science class. I’d finished a worksheet early and decided to get a Time for Kids magazine off Mrs. Estevez’s bookshelf. It was the 2008 Invention Issue, but that wasn’t the only thing that caught my eye. In the magazine, there was an article about a girl who named the Mars Exploration Rovers, Spirit and Opportunity. The article also talked about the essay contest NASA was holding to name its next Mars rover. Before I even knew anything else about it, a single word flooded my 11-year-old mind: Curiosity.I couldn’t wait for the bell to ring so I could get started o n my essay. That afternoon, I raced home from the bus stop, sat down at the computer, and typed until my fingers ached. It turned out that I was just in time. A few days later, and the contest would have closed.Five months later, shortly after I had turned 12, I was watching a National Geographic special on mammoths when the phone rang. My mom answered, and immediately, a wide smile spread across her face. When she told me that I had won, I was happier than I could ever remember being. I screamed and ran up and down that stairs and all around the house. I completely forgot about the mammoths and did not even remember to turn off the TV until it was really late.Curiosity is such an important part of who I am. I have always been fascinated by the stars, the planets, the sky and the universe. I remember as a little girl, my grandfather and I would sit together in the backyard for hours. He’d tell me stories and point out the stars. My grandfather lived in China, thousands of miles away from my home in Kansas. I loved the stars because they kept us together even when we were apart. They were always there, yet there was so much I didn’t know about them. That’s what I love so much about space. No matter how much we learn, it will always possess some mystery. In the past, space exploration may have been a competition to see who got somewhere first or the fastest. But now, it is one of the few things that bring people together. Science is a language that needs no translation. It doesn’t matter where you’re from or what you look like ----you just have to have a thirst for knowledge and a passion for learning in order to succeed.People often ask me why we go to faraway places like Mars. Why do we explore? My answer to that is simple: because we can; because we’re curious; because we as human beings do not just stay holed up in one place. We are constantly wondering and trying to find out what’s over the hill and beyond the horizon. The Curiosity rover is more than just a robot. It is more than just a titanium body and aluminum wheels. Curiosity represents the hard work, passion, love and commitment of thousands of people from all over the world who were brought together by science. Science is so awesome. It is breathtaking and mind-blowing; and sometimes, it’s jus t a little bit crazy. The discoveries we make about our world are incredibly humbling. They move us forward and have the potential to benefit all of mankind. This December it will be four years of my life that have been tied to Curiosity in some way. I’ve met so many amazing people through this experience, form scientists to engineers to administrators to volunteers. Their devotion and enthusiasm inspire me greatly. My journey with Curiosity and the MSL mission team has shaped the person that I am today, as well as the person I would one day like to become.I am deeply grateful to everyone who made it possible for me to have this amazing adventure. And to you, I hope your curiosity take you far.( )11.
