Travelling abroad李仕才一、阅读理解。
Mahendra, a former senior officer at the State Bank of India, talks about his disabled and wounded dogs like a father about his children—with the same love, affection, and warmth. He's a wellknown animal rights activist, the secretary at People for Animals (PFA). But nothing explains Mahendra better than his love for animals. It was this love that led him to establish India's first shelter home for dogs living with disabilities. It all started in 1998 when, while taking a midnight walk, Mahendra came across a very weak dog on the street, whose bones were seen under its skin. Mahendra decided to feed it and for the next couple of days it became the centre of his life, until the night when he found it dead. Since then, Mahendra started providing treatment to all wounded and sick dogs he came across. After some time, somebody told Mahendra about PFA, India's largest animal welfare organization, chaired by Mrs Maneka Gandhi. Mahendra contacted her and, impressed by the work he was doing, Mrs Gandhi asked him to start a PFA chapter in Ahmedabad. Thus, in 2014, he started the shelter. It took a long time for Mahendra to find land where the shelter could be set up. Finally, Ramesh Bhai Patel, a farmer from a village named Jundal, agreed to give his land for nothing. Along with a team of four doctors and many volunteers, the shelter now has twentyfive dogs that were unable to walk at all when they were brought in. Today, they're slowly healing.Dogs that have healed with proper treatment are sent back to where they came from if the environment there is safe. However, the shelter will be home to the blind dogs for all their lives, says Mahendra. The shelter runs on the money coming from Mahendra's own pocket. There have been some financial crunches now and then but Mahendra is determined that no matter what challenges come their way, they'll fight through.1.From Paragraph 1, what can we know about Mahendra?A.His affection for animals.B.His love for senior people.C.His care for disabled people.D.His devotion to protecting his children.2.Mahendra decided to do something for animals because of ________.A.the death of a homeless sick dogB.his meeting with a sick dog one nightC.the encouragement of Mrs GandhiD.his contact with the organization PFA3.In his effort to build the shelter, Mahendra ________.A.spent much money hiring a landB.received little support from othersC.got a free land from a farmerD.was financially supported by the government4.What does th e underlined word “crunches” in the last paragraph mean?A.Aids.B.Markets.C.Services.D.Difficulties.参考答案: 1.A; 2.A; 3.C; 4.D解析: 1.[细节题。

选修7 Unit 5 Travelling abroad一、阅读理解Do you hear that birds of a feather flock together? It certainly appears that they do. We are likely to hang around with individuals who are similar to ourselves. Poor people like to surround themselves with other poor people, and rich people with other rich people. Intelligent people associate with like-minded people, and artists typically seek out other artists. It appears that we all have fort zones we attempt to stay within. Very stressed and poor people don’t fee l fortable associating with rich people. We owe it to each other to be successful because success breeds more success. And if we are not feeling successful, looking at who we have as friends and associates can tell us and others a lot about ourselves and why. The longer we associate with a group of individuals, the more our thinking processes bee like theirs.A few years ago, a doctor friend of mine began associating with a new group of people. At the time, he had a successful practice and a positive and grateful attitude to life. However, within the first six months of his association with these individuals, his attitude and goals changed , he was angry at how things were and was dissatisfied with those who’d bee his opposition. He became very stubborn. As a result his practice dropped in quality of service. His facial expressions often showed anger and stress. After about two years of association with this group, he learned some valuable lessons. He realized that always focusing on problems or being dissa tisfied with others doesn’t lead to a rewarding life, nor does it solve as many problems as it creates. He decided that he’d rather get back into serving his patients. This doctor put his heart and soul into his practice, and his life changed again. He began to attract people who focused on solutions instead of problems. His success was now more obvious than his stress—his achievement more obvious than his frustration.Whom we hang out with does make a difference. The old saying "If you want to soar (翱翔) with the eagles, don’t flock with the turkeys." has a point.1.What does the underlined part "birds of a feather flock together" in Paragraph1 mean?A. Birds like to take a risk to fly high in the sky.B. Birds are more likely to fly together than other creatures.C. People are more likely to have different attitudes to life.D. People of the same kind are found together.2.We can infer from the passage that the individuals the doctor hung out with were ________.A. stressedB. successfulC. patientD. rich3.The author uses the old saying in the last paragraph to ________.A. show his great literary talentB. make his article more persuasiveC. raise another similar questionD. suggest the end of his article4.The author u ses the doctor’s example to prove that ________.A. bad luck never es aloneB. success breeds more successC. someone has no control over his own lifeD. people are likely to bee like those who they associate with【语篇解读】俗话说:物以类聚,人以群分,人们往往会和相处的人相似,所以我们要和积极的人在一起。

Johannes Vermeer is such a quiet and introspective(内省的)artist that it took hundreds of years for anyone to notice he was a genius.A major Vermeer exhibition opens this month at the Louvre in Paris, whose permanent collection includes his great painting of a woman absorbed in close, visually demanding work,The Lacemaker(about 1669-1670).Like other paintings by Vermeer, this image represents modern culture. So attracted are today's art lovers by Vermeer that it was thought shocking when a recent survey found that 82% of Americans can't name who painted Girl with a Pearl Earring.Well, maybe they don't go to the movies much.It is not true to say he was forgotten—that would suggest he was famous in his lifetime. He was not.Vermeer was one more painter among the many who worked for money in the Dutch Republic in the 17th century. He was not a star like Rembrandt. He obviously took himself and his art seriously. His selfreferential painting The Art of Painting proves that.Even though he worked all his life in Delft,he painted only 35 known works and left his family poor when he died in 1675 at the age of 43.It is fitting that Paris is celebrating Vermeer, because it was the French avantgarde(先锋派)in the 19th century who saved him from being completely pare his painting Woman in Blue Reading a Letter or The Little Street with, say,Edouard Manet's A Bar at the FoliesBergère(1882)or Camille Pissarro's The Boulevard Montmartre at Night(1897)and it is easy to see why the art of Vermeer found its natural audience in Parisian bohemia. All these artists are likely to have known about and admired Vermeer due to the efforts of the critic ThoréBürger,a veteran of the 1848 Revolution.Vermeer's rediscovery is part of the history of modern French art.Vermeer is not only a great artist. He is a great modern artist.1.How many paintings produced by Vermeer are mentioned in the text?A.Four. 选修7 Unit 5 Travelling abroad李仕才一、阅读理解After a year of examining studies concerning whether homework is effective, NYC P.S. 116 elementary school decided that math worksheets and essay assignments were actually a waste of time. In February, Principal Jane Hsu sent a letter to parents stating that the Pre-K through fifth grade students would not be given any traditional homework to encourage kids to have free time for reading, playing outside, or doing activities they enjoy."The negative effects of homework have been well established," Hsu wrote in a note to parents. "They include: children’s frustration and exhaustion, lack of time for other activities and family time and, sadly for many, loss of interest in learning."Some parents, however, disagree with the policy change, believing that a lack of focus will cause children to fall behind. Homework has been part of education from the beginning, and has increased in volume in recent years.Hsu’s advice that children should read and spend time with their fami lies has upset some parents to the point of considering pulling their children out of P.S. 116. This group feels that homework assignments give children a goal to work toward. Others feel so strongly about the importance of homework that they have begun giving their own homework assignments to their children. An Australian Childhood Foundation survey found that 71% of Australian parents feel they do not spend enough quality time with their children mainly because of the time spent running the household or the time spent helping with homework. Education experts in Australia are saying that parents should stop helping. Doing so will give kids more independence, will give parents more free time, and will help reduce the number of homework-induced arguments in the family. While some research suggests that homework has little academic benefit for elementary students, other research shows homework can help kids develop independence, and confidence. It can also contribute to a sense of belonging or control over theirlives. When parents try to help their children with homework, the assistance can take away that feeling and can also drain already exhausted working parents.1.Cancelling traditional homework is aimed at __________.A. allowing students to learn on their ownB. inspiring students to spend more time with parentsC. wishing students to seek self-developmentD. motivating students to help with housework2.What can be concluded from the 1st and 2nd paragraph?A. Jane Hsu is the first principal to cancel homework.B. Jane Hsu has done thorough research on homework.C. Jane Hsu paid little attention to students’ academic records.D. Jane Hsu knows students prefer activities to their subjects.3.Why are some parents strongly against Principal Jane Hsu?A. They have no time to give their children homework.B. They don’t think the school is responsible for their kids.C. They are afraid their kids will fall behind.D. They dislike their kids doing too many activities.4.What is the author’s attitude to parents’ help ing kids with homework?A. Supportive.B. Indifferent.C. Ironic.D. Negative.【文章大意】这是一篇议论文,文章对是否应该给小学生布置家庭作业进行了论述。

Travelling abroad李仕才***阅读理解。
"I see you’ve got a bit of water on your coat,’’ said the man at the petrol station. ‘‘Is it raining out there?’’ ‘‘No. it’s pretty nice," I replied, checking my sleeve. "Oh, right. A pony(马驹) bit me earlier."As it happened, the bite was virtually painless: more the kind of small bite you might get from a naughty child. The pony responsible was queuing up for some ice cream in the car park near Haytor, and perhaps thought I’d jumped in ahead of him.The reason why the ponies here are naughty is that Haytor is a tourist — heavy area and tourists are constantly feeding the ponies foods, despite signs asking them not to. By feeding the ponies, tourists increase the risk of them getting hit by a car, and make them harder to gather during the area’s annual pony drift(迁移). The purpose of a pony drift is to gather them up so their health can be checked, the baby ones can be stopped from feeding on their mothers’ milk, and those who’ve gone beyond their limited area can be returned to their correct area. Some of them are also later sold, in order to limit the number of ponies according to the rules set by Natural England.Three weeks ago, I witnessed a small near—disaster a few miles west of here. While walking, I noticed a pony roll over on his back. "Hello!" I said to him, assuming he was just rolling for fun, but he was very still and, as I got closer, I saw him kicking his legs in the air and breathing heavily. I began to properly worry. about him. Fortunately, I man aged to get in touch with a Dartmoor’s Livestock Protection officer and send her a photo. The officer immediately sent a local farmer out to check on the pony. The pony had actually been trapped between two rocks. The farmer freed him, and he began to run happily around again.Dartmoor has 1,000 or so ponies, who play a critical role in creating the diversity of species in this area. Many people are working hard to preserve these ponies, and trying to come up with plans to find a sustainable(可持续的) future for one of Dartmoor’s most financially—troubled elements.1.Why are tourists asked not to feed the ponies?A. To protect the tourists from being bitten.B. To keep the ponies off the petrol station.C. To avoid putting the ponies in danger.D. To prevent the ponies from fighting.2.One of the purposes of the annual pony drift is _________.A. to feed baby ponies on milkB. to control the number of poniesC. to expand the habitat for poniesD. to sell the ponies at a good price3.What was t he author’s first reaction when he saw a pony roll on its back?A. He freed it from the trap.B. He called a protection officer.C. He worried about it very much.D. He thought of it as being naughty.4.What does the author imply about the preserva tion of Dartmoor’s ponies?A. It lacks people’s involvement.B. It costs a large amount of money.C. It will affect tourism in Dartmoor.D. It has caused an imbalance of species.【文章大意】这是一篇夹叙夹议文。
