北京2010年成人英语三级考试模拟试题二及答案

北京2010年成人英语三级考试模拟试题二及答案

Passage 2 In the United States, a person can take credit only for what he has accomplished by himself. Americans get no credit whatsoever for having been born into a rich or privileged family. (In the United States, that would be considered “an accident of birth”.) Americans pride themselves in having been born poor and, through their own hard work, having climbed the difficult ladder of success to whatever level they have achieved—all by themselves. The American social system has, of course, made it possible for Americans to move, relatively easily, up to the social ladder, whereas this is impossible to do in many other countries. The “self-made man or woman” is still very much the ideal in present-day America. Americans believe that competition brings out the best in any individual. Consequently, the foreign visitor will see competition being fostered in the American home and in the American classroom, even at the youngest age levels. You may find the value placed on competition among individuals. But Americans teaching in Third World countries find the lack of competitiveness in a classroom situation equally distressing (令⼈苦恼的). They soon learn that what they had thought to be one of the universal human characteristics represented only a peculiarly American (or Western) value. Americans, valuing competition, have devised an economic system to go with it – free enterprise (⾃由企业制). Americans feel very strongly that a highly competitive economy will bring out the best in its people and ultimately, that the society which fosters competition will progress most rapidly. If you look for it, you will see evidence in all areas – in all fields as diverse as medicine, the art, education, and sports – that free enterprise is the approach most often preferred in America. 6. What does the author mean by saying “self-made man or woman” is still very much the ideal in present-day America? A. Americans no longer respect those who are born rich as they used to. A:whatB:whileC:thatD:when正确答案:DDirections: There are five reading passages in this part. Each passage is followed by four questions. For each question there are four suggested answers marked A, B, C and D. Choose one best answer.Passage OneBefore the conference began, a Japanese businessman was introduced to an American businessman at the lounge. The Japanese man, arms extending downwards from his shoulders, bowed from his waist toward the American businessman to whom he was just introduced. His eyes were directed ahead his face showed no particular expression. The American businessman stood straight. His eyes focused on the Japanese man’s eyes. He smiled and put out his right hand. Both men smiled briefly in embarrassment. The Japanese man straightened up and put out his right hand. The American withdrew his hand and bowed his head. A broader smile of embarrassment, and some noise from each man——not really words, just some sounds from their throats——indicating discomfort. They were in the course of a conflict of customs: they had different habits for greeting people they were being introduced to.When people are planning to go to another country, they expect to encounter certain kinds of differences. They usually expect the weather and the food to be different. They expect to find differences in some of the material aspects of life, such as the availability of cars, electricity, and home heating systems. And, without knowing the details, they expect differences in customs. Customs are the behaviors that are generally expected in specific situations. American men, for example, shake hands with each other when first introduced while Japanese men bow.36.【单选题】When introduced to a Japanese businessman, the American businessman put out his right hand because .A:he felt a little bit nervousB:he wanted to express his discomfortC:he felt a little offended by the Japanese manD:he wanted to shake hands with the Japanese man正确答案:D37.【单选题】The two businessmen behaved different because .A:They followed their own greeting customsB:they were not used to the strange atmosphereC:they couldn’t speak each other’s languageD:They had never met each other before正确答案:A38.【单选题】Paragraph 4 tell us that when visiting a foreign country, .A:it is very uncommon for one to encounter embarrassing situationsB:it is hard for one to adapt to the material aspects of life thereC:people often expect to meet differences in customsD:people expect the same kind of food and weather正确答案:C39.【单选题】This passage is mainly about .A:cultural invasionB:the understanding of customsC:business talksD:differences in handshakes正确答案:BPassage ThreePeople joke that no one in Los Angeles reads; everyone watches TV, rents videos, or goes to the movies. The most popular reading material is comic books, movie magazines, and TV guides. City libraries have only 10 percent of the traffic that car washes have. But how do you explain this? An annual book festival in west Los Angeles is flourishing year after year. People wait half an hour for a parking space to become available. This outdoor festival, sponsored by a newspaper, occurs every April for one weekend. This year’s attendance was estimated at 70,000 on Saturday and 75,000 on Sunday. The festival consisted of 280 exhibitors. There were about 90 talks given by authors, with an audience question-and answer period following each talk. Autograph(亲笔签名) seekers sought out more than 150 authors. A food court sold all kinds of popular food and diverse foreign food, from American hamburgers to Hawaiian shave ice drinks. Except for a $ 7 parking fee, the festival was free. Even so, some people avoided the food court prices by staying away and having their own sandwichesand drinks.People came from all over California. One couple drove down from San Francisco. “This is our sixth year here now. We love it,” said the husband. “It’s just fantastic to be in the great outdoors, to be among so many books and authors, and to get some very good deals, too.”The idea for the festival occurred years ago, but nobody knew if it would succeed. Although book festivals were already popular in other US cities, would Los Angles residents welcome one?” “The citizens of the city are very unpredictable,” said one of the festival founders.40.【单选题】The underlined sentence in the first paragraph implies that .A:city libraries have a very limited number of readersB:only a small proportion of the readers go to libraries by carC:city libraries provide fewer places for car washesD:city libraries have fewer parking places正确答案:A41.【单选题】The outdoor book festival attracts .A:autograph seekers and authors onlyB:people with different interestsC:people who love Los AngelesD:people who like cooking正确答案:B42.【单选题】At the very beginning, people were about the idea for the book festival in Los Angeles.A:confidentB:pessimisticC:uncertainD:indifferent正确答案:C43.【单选题】The success of Los Angeles book festival shows that .A:book reading is still popular in Los AngelesB:Los Angeles people prefer library to book festivalC:people attend the book festivals for fun not for readingD:libraries should have food courts to attract more readers正确答案:APassage TwoMr. Leonard, the principal of the Bedford Academy High School in Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brooklyn, is a man of many solutions, many of them creative, many of them, apparently, also effective. In New York City, only about 50 percent of students manage to graduate in four years. At Bedford Academy, 63 percent of the students qualify for free lunch, a majority of which are being raised by a single mother and another significant number are being raised by someone other than a parent. Yet close to 95 percent of students graduate, and actually every one of those goes on to college.Mr. Leonard does not achieve those results by admitting only high-testing students into his school. Of the students arriving with lower test scores, Mr. Leonard says that he is not looking for the students with the highest grades, or even the best behavior. He’s looking for the one who understand his basic mission of discipline and respect, and are willing to devote themselves to his regular training course. The Bedford Academy High School is famous for its autonomy. For Mr. Leonard, autonomy means insisting that all entering students spend their Saturday mornings in preparatory classes the summer before they enroll. Autonomy also means an automatic weeklong suspension for any students who “disrespects a female,” said Mr. Leonard. It means requiring struggling students, in the weeks before the Regents exams, to attend studying sessions on Saturday from 9 a.m. until 9 p.m.It means the most senior, experienced teachers, including Mr. Leonard, teach not the school’s academic jewels, but the most struggling students. And autonomy also means the school’s teachers administer almost no homework. Instead they emphasize after-school tutoring where the teachers can keep a better eye on whether the student is actually grasping the material.44.【单选题】In Mr. Leonard’s school, most of the students who don’t have to pay for lunch .A:are adopted childrenB:are parentlessC:are homelessD:have a single parent正确答案:D45.【单选题】What can be a good indication of the Bedford School’s success?A:63 percent of its students go on to college.B:A high percentage of students enjoy free lunch.C:All the graduates from the school go on to college.D:The number of its graduates is twice that of New York High School 正确答案:C46.【单选题】What does Mr. Leonard expect from those low-testing students?A:The highest scoresB:The best behaviorC:Respectfulness and disciplineD:Willingness to learn by themselves正确答案:C47.【单选题】The school insists that students should .A:leave the school if they fail to respect a womanB:attend the preparatory classes in the summer before enrollingC:do their homework to review what they have learnedD:come to the school on Sundays正确答案:BPassage FourHave you ever been afraid to talk back when you were treated unfairly?Have you ever bought something just because the salesman talked you into it? Are you afraid to ask someone for a date? Many people are afraid to assert themselves(坚持己见). Dr. Robert Alberti, author of Stand up, Speak Out, and Talk Back, thinks it’s because of their lack of confidence. “Our structure of organization tends to make people distrust themselves,” says Alberti, “There’s always a ‘superior’ around---a parent, a teacher, a boss---who ‘knows better’. These ‘superiors’ often gain when they keep breaking at your self-image.”But Alberti and other scientists are doing something to help people assert themselves. They offer “assertiveness training” courses---AT for short. In the AT course people learn that they have a right to be themselves. They learn to speak out and feel good about doing so. They learn to be aggressive without hurting people. In one way, learning to speak out is to overcome fear. A group taking an AT course will help the shy person to lose his fear. But AT uses an even stronger motive---the need to share. The shy person speaks out in the group because he wants to tell how he feels.Whether or not you speak up for yourself depends on your self-image. If someone you face is more “important” than you, you may feel less of a person. You start to doubt your own good sense. You go by the other person’s label. But, why should you? AT says you can get to feel good about yourself. And once you do, you can learn to speak out.48.【单选题】People are reluctant to talk back because .A:they have a poor self-imageB:they have not received AT coursesC:they have not grasped communication skillsD:they are not generous enough to share things正确答案:A49.【单选题】According to Dr. Alberti, our organization is constructed to .A:get people to trust their own solutions to problemsB:keep people as knowledgeable as their ‘superiors’C:train people’s capacity to speak up for their rightsD:make things more favorable for ‘superiors’正确答案:D50.【单选题】One of the objectives of AT courses is to .A:train people to trust othersB:encourage people to share their thoughtsC:tell people of their right to be ‘superiors’D:help people overcome their fear of asserting themselves正确答案:D51.【单选题】Which of the following would be the best title of this passage?A:Protect YourselfB:Try to Speak OutC:Share Your OpinionD:Face Your Superior正确答案:BPassage FiveA wind tunnel is used for testing planes or plane models. In a wind tunnel air is blown over a plane or a model placed in a test section. Wind tunnel test sections are different in size depending on airflow speed requirements. Some low-speed tunnels have test sections large enough for a complete smart plane. In the very high speed tunnels used for space testing, however, the model may be as small as a pencil. There are two ways of feeding air to the test section. In the constant flow tunnel, airflow produced by electric fans is forced through the tunnel to the test section, then through another tunnel section back to the starting point for reuse. The other way involves storing high-pressure air in a box, sending it out by a controlling device to pass through the tunnel and test section into another box. This way is usually used for a very short period of high-speed airflow.Wind tunnels are usually used to test planes before they are flown. Problems in a plane can be found when it meets the high-speed airflow in the tunnel. For example, if the wings are built so that they would weaken at high speed, this fact can be discovered in the tunnel, thus saving many lives and millions of dollars. In a wind tunnel, scientists also find out how different planes will act at different speeds. They find out such things as how the air dives by the wing surfaces, how slowly a plane can before it starts to drop and how fast it can climb.52.【单选题】Some wind tunnel sections are larger than others becauseA:they are used for large planesB:they can produce a stronger windC:they are built to conduct a high-speed testD:the air in them flows at a lower speed正确答案:D53.【单选题】The underlined words “this fact” in Paragraph 3 refer to the fact that .A:it costs a lot to test a planeB:the wings are not good enoughC:some problems are found with a planeD:the wings meet the high-speed air flow in the tunnel正确答案:B54.【单选题】As mentioned in the last paragraph, a wind tunnel can be used to find out .A:how fast a plane can riseB:how smooth a plane’s surface isC:how a plane lands in a strong windD:how a plane drop at a low height正确答案:A55.【单选题】What can we learn from the passage?A:It is very expensive to build a wind tunnelB:Wind tunnels are very essential in testing planesC:Scientists still have a lot to learn about wind tunnelsD:There are new ways to feed air to the test section正确答案:BA. I've slightly changed my mind after seventeen years because I think it's an ugly town now.Things have changed. For everybody,England meant gentlemen, fair play, and good manners. The fair play is going, unfortunately, andso are the gentlemanly attitudes and good manners-people shut doors heavily in your face and politeness is disappearing.I regret that there are so few comfortable meeting places. You're forced to live indoors. In Paris I go out much more,to restaurants and nightclubs. To meet friends here it usually has to be in a pub,and it can be difficult to go there alone as a woman. The cafes are not terribly nice.As a woman,I feel unsafe here. I spend a bomb on taxis because I will not take public transport after 10 p. m. I used to use it,but now I'm afraid. The idea of family seems to be more or less non-existent in England. My family is well united and that's typically French. Health foods are packaged (包装)in greens, yellowsor browns because we think of these as healthy colours. Ice cream packets are often blue and expensive goods, like chocolates, are gold or silver. When some kind of pain killer was brought out recently, researchers found that the colours turned the customers off because they made the product look weak and ineffective. (If yes) How do you overcome the difficulty? What do you think of students taking a part-time job while in school? What entertainment does your college (university) offer during the weekend?正确答案:E First of all we’d like to know something about you, Candidate A, so I’m going to ask you some questions.E Can you tell us something about the after-class activities at your college (university)?A After class we can take part in some group activities and solitary pursuits. Group activities afford us the opportunities to make many new friends. By playing a ball game, going to a dance, or having a holiday outing, we can share knowledge, skills, and happiness. Such experiences contribute much to the development of our sociability. In addition, we can also enjoy solitary pursuits. We can read a book at midnight, listen to a favorite record between classes, and jog on campus on later afternoons. Our campus is rich and colorful because of these activities.E What kind of after-class activities are you interested in?B I’m interested in many kinds of after托业(听力)模拟试卷57lass activities, especially watching movies. There are many beautiful things in the movies. Maybe they do not exist in reality, but imagining them can make our life nice and colorful. There is a cinema in my university, and we also can watch movies in our library. In addition, we can download many classical and recent movies from the internet. Above all, it’s very convenient to watch movies on campus.E Do you often take part in after-class activities? (If yes) What are they? (If not) Why not?E Thank you. Now we’d like to know something about you, Candidate B, so I’m going to ask you some questions.E Is it difficult for you to pay your tuition and fees at college (university)? (If yes) How do you overcome the difficulty?B Yes, it’s very difficult for me to pay my tuition and fees at university. My family is not rich, for my parents are both peasants. So, I have to do some part-time jobs after class. Sometimes I’m a bit tired, but I really enjoy it. By doing these jobs, I can pay my tuition and fees all by myself, and I can get rich work experience. I’m proud of myself. Certainly I alsostudy hard, and I’m always the top student in my class.E What do you think of students taking a part-time job while in school?B In my class, about 25 percent of students now hold a part-time job or temporary job. They are working as tutors, salespersons, engineers, editors and whatever work they can find. I think it’s really a good idea to hold a part-time job. Firstly, we can live a self-reliant life on campus. We can pay for the books, movies and bus fares all by ourselves. Secondly, we can gain some experience in the ways of society. Holding a part-time job can provide us opportunities to know the outside world and prepare them for a future career.E What entertainment does your college (university) offer during the weekend?A There are many kinds of entertainment offered by my university during the weekend. Every Saturday in the stadium there will be a dance held by the Student U-nion. We can go there to have a dance. And most of the matches and performances are held at the weekend. Also, we can watch movies in the library and listen to speeches during the weekend. In addition, every weekend, we students can sell our old books there. It’s very interesting.考生相互问答2.Interlocutor:Now,I’d like you to talk about something for about 3 minutes. I’m just going to listen. I’d like you to discuss about working for a big company.Talk to each other about it. It is not necessary to agree with each other. You have only about 3 minutes for this.Candidates: (approximately 3 minutes) Interlocutor:Thank you. (Retrieve picture sheet. )正确答案:E Now, I’d like you to talk about something for about 3 minutes. I’m just going to listen. I’d like you to discuss about working for a big company.A I’d like to work in a big company. The salary and bonus are so attractive. B I also want to work in a big company, but the reason is not the attractive salary and bonus. I just think there are so many challenges in big companies.A But I think there are also many challenges in small companies. The challenges depend on what kind of job you are doing. You can have a challenging job both in big companies and small companies. From my point of view, I prefer small companies. I like the simple human relations in small companies. B I don’t care about the human relations. I just want to have a promising job. Most people think the jobs in big companies are more promising, I don’t think so. Working in a big company, you can’t be put in an important position for a long time. And you must obey the authorities in everything. But if you work in a small company, you can be in charge of important things of the company;you can be a policymaker. I think it’s more promising.A But if you are more excellent than others, you also can be put in an important position in big companies.B Yes, I agree with you. Also, in a big company, you can be involved in many projects, and it’s helpful to your working experience.A But it can be more professional to work in a small company. Most small companies are specialized in professional fields such as education on-line, from which you can get rich professional knowledge. It’s also very important.B Well, before making our choices, we should think over the differences between a bigcompany and a small company besides the scale, and we also should know what’s our most consideration. You want to earn high salary or to learn something? Sometimes you can get both of them at the same time. Sometimes you can only get one of them. It depends on what kind of job you are going for in big companies or small companies. No matter what we are doing, please remember, work is an honorable thing.A Why did you say that work is an honorable thing no matter what we are doing? B The world is created and maintained by people who are working. No matter what high rank or what great wealth a person may have, he is working mentally or physically for the society. Through work we can exist and mankind can exist. Through work we conquer the forces of nature. Through work we find means to live on. So, no matter what we are doing, just remember this point, and try your best to do something for the society and for yourself.B What’s your opinion of working for a private firm?A Well, it depends on what kind of private firm it is. Some private firms are quite big and with good reputations. Working in such private firms, I can learn a lot. Besides, generally speaking, the management system of private firms is usually good. What’s more, because of the simple structure in private firms, employees and employers can communicate without a lot of obstacles. Therefore, working in such a private firm would be very pleasant. I would like to work in such a private firm. On the contrary, if the private firm is a very small firm and with a bad reputation, I would not choose to work there.A What’s your opinion of working for a foreign firm?B I think it’s a good idea to work for a foreign firm. It’s also the dream of most university and college students. Firstly, the salary and bonus of foreign firms are much higher than domestic firms. Secondly, the management systems of foreign firms are always very good. Your salary and bonus are given according to your contribution. Your enthusiasm can be stimulated by this way. Thirdly, I like the culture of foreign firms. Most foreign firms have a long history and are run efficiently. They often offer some training to new employees, which can help them a lot in their future careers.B Do you think working for a big company is a challenge? Give your reasons. A Yes, I think so. Firstly, it’s not easy to get a position in a big company, so I should develop my abilities in many aspects during my college life. It’s a challenge. Secondly, if I enter into a big company, I should acquaint myself with the operation quickly and learn how to keep up with my colleagues. It’s a challenge. Thirdly, I don’t want to be an ordinary employee for a long time, so I have to challenge myself to be an excellent employee and try to get the chance for promotion.A Many young people prefer a white-collar job to a blue-collar one. What’s your opinion on this point?B Well, frankly speaking, I prefer a white-collar job. Above all, the work conditions of white-collar jobs are better than blue-collar ones. A white-collar just needs to sit in their office to deal with some daily businesses. Most white-collars are managers, they work by their brains. Their salary and bonus are always very high. As for the blue-collar, they take part in physical work. Their work is always very tiresome physically. But the salary and bonus are not satisfying. B How would you assess your ability to work with others?A I think I could be a good partner to work with. There are six classmates sharing a room in my dormitory! we live together happily. I’m an extroverted girl. My personality makes me very easy to get along with. From my dormitory life, I learn how to care for otherpeople, how to help each other. And I have rich work experience through several part-time jobs. I know, in a team, everybody should contribute to the team work. Only when all the people’s strong points are put together, can the team work be done well. I think I’m quite qualified to do such team work or group work.继续性问答3.Interlocutor:Now, I’d like each of you to talk on your own for about one and a half minutes. I’m going to give each of you a different picture and I’d like you to talk about it. Candidate A, here is your picture. Please let Candidate B have a look at it.(Hand over the picture to Candidate A)Candidate B, I’ll give you your picture in a minute. Candidate A, I’d like you to describe the picture and tell us what you think about writing a letter/postcard and talking on the phone. Remember you have only about one and a half minutes for this.Candidate A: (approximately one and a half minutes)Interlocutor:Thank you. (Retrieve picture. )Candidate B,is there anything else you would like to say about the picture?Candidate B: (approximately 30 seconds)Interlocutor:Candidate B.here is your card(sending an e-mail and talking on the phone). Please let Candidate A have a look at it.(Hand over the picture to Candidate B)I’d like you to describe the picture and also tell us how you feel about the communication. Remember you have only about one and a half minutes for this.Candidate B: (approximately one and a half minutes) Interlocutor:Thank you. (Retrieve picture. )Candidate A,is there anything else you would like to say about the picture?Candidate A: (approximately 30 seconds) Interlocutor: Thank you.正确答案:E Now,I’d like each of you to talk on your own for about one and a half minutes. I’m going to give each of you a different picture and I’d like you to talk about it. Candidate A,here is your picture. Please let Candidate B have a look at it.A Among the two pictures, one of them is writing a letter to friends, the other one is talking on the phone. Talking on the phone is quicker and more direct, but it’s quite expensive, especially long-distance phone calls. Writing letters is comparatively slower, but it’s much cheaper. Writing letters is also a very good way to train our writing abilities. Generally speaking, I keep up correspondence with my friends, especially with those who live in other cities or provinces. If we stay in the same city, I usually phone them. E Thank you. Candidate B, is there anything else you would like to say about this picture?B Compared with talking on the phone, having a face-to-face talk is more direct. Being with good friends, you can have a cup of coffee or tea, and it’s more comfortable. But sometimes it’s impossible for friends who live in different places to have a face-to-face talk. So, people have to communicate with their friends by telephone. E Candidate B,here is your card(sending an e-mail and talking on the phone). Please let Candidate A have a look at it. (Hand over the picture to Candidate B)I’d like you to describe the picture and also tell us how you feel about the communication. Remember you have only about one and a half minutes for this.B The pictures in my hand show that we can communicate with our friends by e-mail or telephone. These two means of communication are all very quick. But compared tothe telephone, e-mail is not as convenient and restrictive if someone does not have a computer or doesn’t know how to use a computer. As for our university and college students, I think e-mail is a very good means of communication. Almost everybody knows how to use computer and it’s very convenient to find a computer to send or check e-mail. It’s also much cheaper than talking on the phone. E Thank you. Candidate A, is there anything you would like to say about this picture?A Talking on the phone is also a direct way to communicate. It’s very convenient, but it can be expensive if your friends are in the other cities or provinces.。

For example, a little child might ask for a breakfast food contained in a box with a picture of a TV character. The child is more interested in the picture than in breakfast food. Pictures for children to color or cut out, games printed on a package, or a small gift inside a box also motivate many children to buy products - or to ask their parents to buy for them. Some packages suggest that a buyer will get something for nothing. Food products sold in reusable containers are examples of this. Although a similar product in plain container might cost less, people often prefer to buy the product in a reusable glass or dish, because they believe the container is free. However, the cost of the container is added to the cost of the product. The size of a package also motivates a buyer. Maybe the package has “Economy Size” or “Family Size” printed on it. This suggests that the larger size has the most product for the least money. But that is not always true. To find it out, a buyer has to know how the product is sold and the price of the basic unit. The information on the package should provide some answers. But the important thing for any buyer to remember isthat a package is often an advertisement. The words and pictures do not tell the whole story. Only the product inside can do that.21.“A buyer will get something for nothing”in paragraph 2 may probably mean ________.A.a buyer will not get what he pays forB.a buyer will get more than what he pays forC.a buyer will get something useful free of chargeD.a buyer will get more but pay less答案:A22. Each of the passages is followed by 5 questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are 4 choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the best one and mark your answer on the ANSWER SHEET with a single line through the center.Passage OneAmericans this year will swallow 15, 000 tons of aspirin, one of the safest and most effective drugs invented by man. As the most popular medicine in the world today, it is an effective pain reliever. Its bad effects are relatively mild, and it is cheap.Although aspirin was first sold by a German company in 1899, it has been around much longer than that. Hippocrates, in ancient Greece, understood the medical value of the leaves and tree bark which today are known to contain salicylates, the chemical in aspirin. During the 19th century there was a great deal of experimentation in Europe with this chemical, and it led to the introduction of aspirin. By 19l5, aspirin tablets(片剂) were available in the United States. For millions of people suffering from arthritis, aspirin is the only thing that works. A small quantity of aspirin (two five-grain tablets) relieves pain and inflammation. It also reduces fever by interfering with some of the body's reactions. Aspirin, in short, is truly the 20th-century wonder drug. On the other hand, it is also the second largest suicide drug and is the leading cause of poisoning among children. It has side effects that, although relatively mild, are largely unrecognized among users.Aspirin is very irritating to the stomach lining, and many aspirin takers complain about upset stomach. There is a right way and a wrong way to take aspirin. The best way is to chew the tablets before swallowing them with water, but few people can stand the bitter taste. Some people suggest crushing the tablets in milk or orange juice and drinking that.16. This article discusses __________.A. the multiple functions of aspirinB. how and why aspirin was inventedC. the history and the features of aspirinD. how to take aspirin properly17. According to the second paragraph, salicylates is __________.A. leaves and tree barksB. the old name of aspirinC. the name of a US companyD. a component of aspirin18. Which symptom can NOT be treated by aspirin?A. feverB. reactionsC. painD. inflammation19. It can be inferred from the last paragraph that the best way to take aspirin is to take it __________.A. with bitter waterB. with orange juiceC. in tablet formD. in powder form20. The author of this article seems to be__________.A. against the use of aspirinB. in favour of aspirinC. doubtful about aspirinD. not interested in aspirinPassage TwoDr. Mary Jo Bane is the associate director of the Center for Research on Women. Her recent study found “surprising evidence of the persistence of American commitments to family life”, which cast doubt on some common myths about American family.Myth 1: The American Family is Dying Because of the Soaring Divorce Rate.According to Dr. Bane’s study, the American family is changing, not dying. It is becoming smaller and the divorce rate is high. But Dr. Bane says that despite the high divorce rate, marriage has never been more popular. The majority of divorced people re-marry, but only 2%marry more than twice. Most marriages last a long time, and a large proportion of divorces are from teenage marriages. Depending on the specific situation, there’s often good reason for teenage marriages to break up.Myth 2: Working Mothers are Destroying the Family by Neglecting Their Children.“There’s no evidence that children receive less attention from mothers who work outside the home than from mothers working inside the home,”says Dr. Bane. “You have to divide the time into different categories: simple physical function and educational time or development time when a mother plays with the child. So far we have n’t seen the amount of educational or development time vary much, whether or not the mother works outside the home.” In fact, Dr. Bane finds evidence that working mothers, especially in the middle class, try tocompensate for working by setting aside time exclusively for their children. “They probably read more to their children and spend more time in planned activities with them than nonworking mothers do.” says Dr. Bane.21. Dr. Mary Jo Bane’s study seems to suggest that _________.A. Americans are persistent in careerB. Americans are serious with their familiesC. American families are all breaking upD. American families are perfect as usual22. It can be inferred that the common myths of American family consider family life to be _________.A. in great dangerB. quite wonderfulC. changing too fastD. very satisfying23. According to the article, which of the following is true about marriage and divorce?A. Divorced people never consider a second marriage.B. Teenage couples often divorce out of no reason.C. Less and less people plan to get married.D. Very few people have a third or fourth marriage.24. For the children whose mothers go out to work, __________.A. it is better to have mothers at homeB. almost no attention is paid to themC. no less attention is paid to themD. a lot of time is spent playing gamespared with nonworking mothers, working mothers________.A. spare less time to stay with their childrenB. do more educational activities with childrenC. do very little simple physical houseworkD. avoid disturbing their work by family dutiesPassage ThreeCrime has its own cycles, a magazine reported some years ago. Police records that were studied for five years from over 2,400 cities and towns show a surprising link between changes in the season and crime patterns in UK.The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do rape and other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is morethan seasonal: it is a weekend crime. It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p. m. and 6 a. m.Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, burglary has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p. m. and 2 a. m. on a Saturday night in December, January or February. The most uncriminal month of all is May; however, more dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year.On the other hand, our intellectual seasonal cycles are completely different from our criminal tendencies. Professor Huntington, of the Foundation for the Study of Cycles, made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings, make the highest scores on examinations, and propose the most changes to patents. In all instances, he found a spring peak and an autumn peak separated by a summer low. On the other hand, Professor Huntington's studies indicated that June is the peak month for suicides and admissions to mental hospitals. June is also a peak month for marriages!26. The seasonal cycle of crime patterns is proved by_________.A. the figures in police recordsB. 2,400 cities and townsC. a magazine reportD. the studies by police officers27. According to paragraph 2, a murder would most possibly occur on _________.A. a weekday morning in springB. a weekday morning in autumnC. a weekend night in summerD. a weekend night in winter28. What makes May a special month of the year?A. All types of crimes happen in May.B. There is no crime happened in May.C. Criminals increase in number in May.D. Dog attacks are most frequent in May.29. Which behavior is NOT an example of human intellectual activities?A. Reading books on philosophy.B. Attending wedding ceremony.C. Working on mathematics questions.D. Innovating engineering machinery.30. According to Professor Huntington’s study, June is the peak month when people _________.A. get divorcedB. recover from mental illnessC. try to kill themselvesD. climb high and low mountainsPassage FourIn Lusaka, Zambia, a young man applying for a job was told to see the manager. He leaned over the receptionist’s desk and asked. “What tribe(部落) is he?”When the receptionist told him that the manager was a Mashona, the applicant replied, “Then I'll never get the job.”This phenomenon is called tribalism(部落主义). There are more than 2,000 tribes in black Africa. Each has its own language, customs, and physical characteristics that make its members almost immediately recognizable to a person from another tribe. To the Westerner, tribalism is one of the most difficult of African customs to understand. It makes many people think of savagery, warfare, or old-fashioned customs. However, to most Africans, tribalism simply means very strong loyalty to one’s ethnic group. It is a force that can be both good and bad. By definition tribalism means sharing among members of the extended family. It makes sure that a person is taken care of by his own group tribesman. To give a job to a fellow is not wrong; it is an obligation. Similarly, for a politician or military leader, it is considered good common sense to choose his closest advisers from people of his own tribe. This ensures security, continuity, and authority. Tribal loyalty may mean a quick promotion—from sergeant to captain, from clerk to manager—within a very short time.Modern African politicians publicly speak out against tribal divisions. Yet it remains perhaps the most powerful force in day-to-day African life.31. In paragraph 1, why did the young man believe his job application will be refused?A. His behavior was not appropriate.B. He belonged to the same tribe with the manager.C. He didn’t belong to the same tribe with the manager.D. His questions annoyed the receptionist.32. The situation in the first paragraph is an example of_______.A. the difficulty of getting a job in AfricaB. the disagreement on tribalism among AfricansC. the great numbers of tribes in AfricaD. the importance of tribalism in Africa33. What might be the common attitudes of Westerners towards tribalism?A. positiveB. indifferentC. negativeD. none of the above34. According to the article, which of the following is NOT an evidence of tribalism?A. Sergeants maintain security in his own tribe.B.Politicians choose men from his own tribe as intimate advisers.C. Military leaders promote fellow tribesmen to higher positions.D. Managers give jobs to fellow tribesmen.35. What would be the future of tribalism?A. It will soon be destroyed by modern politicians.B. It will remain as strong as it is today and never be changed.C. It will gradually disappear as the society develops.D. It will speed up further division of tribes.Part III Vocabulary and Structure (20 points)Directions: There are 40 incomplete sentences in this part. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, inferior land must be cultivated and the good land worded intensively. Thus ,each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more scope for specialization and the development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand to justify them. One of the difficulties in carrying out a world-wide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw materials. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources,it will be the first concern of government to place a limit on the birthrate, whatever the consequences may be. In the highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex. A decreasing birth rate may lead to unemployment because itresults in a declining market for manufactured goods. (79)When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and the building industry is weakened. Faced with considerations such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.1. A smaller population may mean _______.A. higher productivity, but a lower average incomeB. lower productivity, but a higher average incomeC. lower productivity, and a lower average incomeD. higher productivity, and a higher average income2. According to the passage,a large population will provide a chance for developing _______.A. agricultureB. transport systemC. industryD. national economy3. In a developed country, people will perhaps go out of work if the birthrate _______.A. goes upB. is decreasingC. remains stable D is out of control4. According to the passage slowly rising birthrate perhaps is good for ________.A. a developed nationB. a developing nationC. every nation with a big populationD. every nation with a small population5. It is no easy job to carry out a general plan for birth control throughout the world because ______.A. there are too many underdeveloped countries in the worldB. underdeveloped countries have low level of industrial developmentC. different governments have different views about the problemD. even developed countries may have complex problems标准答案:D,B,B,A,C43、To us it seems so natural to put up an umbrella to keep the water off when it rains.
