PERFORMANCE ART
by Fisherman
I was wandering around in that strange city. Goddamned! At the thought of the burglar, I couldn’t help clenching my teeth. For the past whole day and night I had been doing without any food. Many times I had tried to approach those garbage bins, where the leftovers were strongly appealing to my nerves, and had finally turned away. After all I belonged in the cultivated society instead of the beggars’ class, so I couldn’t…
I was pouring out my misfortunes to the passers-by along the street. However, nobody seemed to take seriously what I had been saying. Instead people cast a weird look at me and went their way with an air of confusion. I was apparently regarded as a crook or a neuropath or something. When evening came, I gathered up all my guts and moved towards a garbage bin; after a hurried glance to make sure there were no men around, I began to put the filthy food into my mouth as rapidly as I could…
I was sitting on the ground, with a torn china bowl beside me. For the whole day I got nothing but a storm of spit and curse with disdain, so it occurred to me that I’d have to find other way out. Then under the cover of the darkness I decently visited several garbage bins.
I had had my face painted with all colors, my hands in a pair of broken boots, a ragged sheepskin jacket on my back; I was turning somersaults; I was standing on my head; I was crawling…There stood a cardboard nearby, on which a sign read PERFORMANCE ART: ANCESTORS. A large audience was watching in high spirits, a rain of shiny coins falling to the ground. Wave after wave of cheers and applauses filled up my ears while tears welled out of my eyes.。
