In Lydia there lived a girl named Arachne who was renowned for her skill in handling needle and spindle. One day she dared to challenge the Goddess to compete with her. Athena arrived in the guise of an old woman and asked Arachne to withdraw her impious challenge. Arachne refused. Athena reassumed her divine form and accepted the challenge. Arachne at once drew threads across her loom and with cunning hand guided the shuttle through the taut netting. As a subject, she had chosen to weave the loves of the Gods. When she had finished she submitted her work to Athena for examination. Furious with her arrogance, Athena changed Arachne into a spider and condemned her eternally to spin, and to draw from her own body the thread with which to weave her web.

Of the many derivations proposed for the name of Athena (or Athene) none is really satisfactory. The Sanskrit vadh (to strike) and adh (hill) have been suggested, as well as the Greek for 'flower' and 'nurse'! The catastrophic fire which destroyed definitively the palace of Cnossus arround 1375 BCE has burned also seriously the tables of clay from the archives, in such a way that now, after being deciphered, speak to us in the quality of documents of that last period. They are only lists which hold, essentially, names and numbers. Between the names, immediately calls our attention a series of Greek Gods who became later current. One of those tables (KN V52=Doc. nº208) has a simple enumeration:

On one occasion Zeus suffered a bad headache. All the gods, including Apollo, the god of medicine ,had tried uselessly to offer an effective treatment .Then the father of gods and men asked Hephaestus to open his head. This the god of the fire did.To the wonder of all the Olympians,a goddess,well-grown and full-armed,came out of Zeus' head. The goddess was giving off light and splendor. She was Athena, goddess of wisdom and knowledge and patroness of Athens .The story of Athena becoming patron goddess of Athens concerns the struggle between the goddess and Poseidon. When the city of Athens was first built by a Phoenician ,both Poseidon and Athena competed for the honour of naming it.It was then agreed that whoever offered the most useful object for men would become the patron of the city.Poseidon struck the ground with his trident and produced a horse, whereas Athena had an olive tree to present,a symbol of peace and plenty. As the horse was regarded as struggle and sorrow, Athens was named after the goddess, who soon took the city under her protection.Athena was the goddess of arts and crafts and woman' s handiwork. She was so skilled with her hands that she tolerated no challenge to her skill in this respect . A Lydian maid,Arachne by name, did not seem to think much of Athena's skill, for shefrequently talked big that she could beat the goddess if she had the chance to do so.The goddess was quite angry.Dressed up as an old woman, she went to advise Arachne to be modest. But the ignorant crafts woman bravely asked the goddess herself to come down and compete with her.At this the goddess took off her disguise and accepted the competition. The two women immediately set about making different designs. While the goddess worked on the story of her rivalry with Poseidon,Arachne began to make a delicate web. When both pieces were finished,Arachne saw,to her surprise, that she had been beaten, for the goddess' design was infinitely better. She felt so shamed that she tied a piece of silk to hang herself. But Just before she breathed her last breath the goddess changed her into a spider and let her weave forever.

Good morning, everyone. Today we are going to introduce a very famous goddess, Athena. And we are going to tell two stories about Athena, who was the virgin goddess of arts, craft, and war.I wonder, how many stories do you know about Athena? Now, we will tell you an interesting story between Athena and a mortal girl, Arachne.Arachne had attained such wonderful skill in the arts of weaving and embroidery. One would have said that Athena had taught her, but she denied. Athena heard this and displeased. One day, Athena assumed the form of an old woman and went and gave Arachne some friendly advice. But Arachne looked at the old dame with anger. She said she was not afraid of the goddess and let Athena try her skill. Athena dropped her disguise standing confessed. Then they had a competition. When Arachne was about to win the competition, Athena could not forbear to admire, yet felt indignant at the insult. She struck the web with her shuttle and rent it in pieces; she then touched the forehead of Arachne and made her feel her guilt and shame. She could not endure it and went and hanged herself. Athena pitied her and at last transformed her into a spider.Next, let me tell you the competition between Athena and Poseidon. Here is the outline of the story.Story between Athena and PoseidonHow the name of Athens came in to beingOur comments on the storyAthena competed with Poseidon to be the patron deity of Athens, which was yet unnamed, in a version of one founding myth. They agreed that each would give the Athenians one gift and that the Athenians would choose the gift they preferred.Poseidon struck the ground with his trident and a spring sprang up; this gave them a means of trade and water —Athens at its height was a significant sea power, defeating the Persian fleet at the Battle of Salamis— but the water was salty and not very good for drinking. So the people there didn’t like the gift that Poseidon gavethem. Athena, however, offered them the first domesticated olive tree, which means peace and friendship. The Athenians (or their king, Cecrops) accepted the olive tree and with it the patronage of Athena, for the olive tree brought wood, oil, and food. As a result, Athena won the competition. For Athena won the competition between her and Poseidon, so Athens was awarded to her as a prize of the contest. Therefore, Athens got its name from goddess Athena.Ok, that’s all about our presentation, thank you for your attention.。

The Trojan Horse经过不断引用已成为一 个广泛流传的成语,常用来比喻the hidden danger(暗藏的危险); the covert wreckers(内 奸);to engage in underhand activities等意义 。
Adonis:
Penelop‘s web :
Swan song :
