The latest and, in many respects, most impressive evidence can be found in a recently produced series of dramatization of outstanding short stories. These productions demonstrate that the television form can have very distinctive qualities and assets.Although the basic aesthetics of television are not radically different from those of movies, the key to the differences that do exist is primarily economic. In television, aesthetics will always be constrained by the "bottom line" of a budget. Add to this is the long acknowledged fact that television, with its smaller frame,is a close up medium. When these things are considered, it becomes apparent that the short story might bean especially good source of dramatic material. It tends to be heavier on character development than on plot, and television can linger on the details and gestures-things that might be called the "beautiful brushstrokes"of the story.第61题What is the main idea of the passage?A.The standard formulae has hindered television.B.The television form is advantageous in dramatizing short stories.C.Television is less costly than movies.D.Television is the best dramatic form.第62题According to the passage, what kind of literature has lately been produced on television?A.Short works of fiction.B.One act plays.C.Chapters of novels.D.Detective adventures.第63题According to the passage, television and movies are______.A.fairly similar art formsB.good financial investmentsC.key to social and economical changeD.media subjected to censorship第64题As the passage reveals, television is most seriously restricted by theA.amounts of available fundsB.ethical standards of the viewersC.necessity of competing with filmsD.restraints imposed by producersWhat is excluded from the qualities and assets that make television the right form to dramatize short stories?A.Financial investments in TV plays are smaller.B.Television is a close-up medium.C.Characterization the heavier part of the short story-can be best fulfilled by television through details and gestures.D.Television is moving beyond the confines of standard formulae.上一题下一题(66~70/共15题)Part ⅣReading ComprehensionDirections: There are 3 passages in this part. An American university president once commented that Einstein had created a new outlook, a new view of the universe. It may be some time before the average mind understands fully the identity of time and space and so on, but even ordinary men understand now that the universe is something larger than ever thought before.By 1914 the young Einstein had gained world fame. You should de cide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage ThreeQuestions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage. The United Nations published a report that was called "The State of World Population". It shows that the growth rate of world population will actually go down in the next ten years. The growth rate will fall from the present 1.8% to a rate of about 1.6% by the end of this century. But the report also points out that problems of food, health care, housing, jobs and schools will get worse unless we do something aboutthe situation. Why is this? Ahhough the total.growth rate of the world population will decrease, in some countries there will still be a big rise in the population. More people will be born in Third World countries than in the richer Northern countries. So the population will grow faster in poor countries; and the problems in these countries will be very serious. This is because the family is more likely to survive if there are a lot of children to work for the members who become old or who cannot find work.A survey of the UN also shows that the growth rate is low where there is a higher level of income, better education, more health care and better living conditions. In this aspect, government plays an important role. So, the conclusion of the UN report is:"Look after the people and the population will look after itself. "第71题According to the passage, the growth rate of the world population is going down,______.A.so the population problems will get worseB.but the population problems are still getting worse。

Firstly, we must be able to understand the language when we hear it spoken . Secondly, we must be able to speak it correctly ourselves. Thirdly, we must be able to read the language. And fourthly, we must be able to write it. We must be able to compose sentences that are grammatically correct. We must know how to arrange sentences in paragraphs, so as to write a good letter and composition. There is no easy way to have success in language learning. A good memory is a goodhelp, but it is not enough simply to memorize rules in a grammar book. It is not much use learning by heart long lists of words and their meanings. We must learn words not by themselves, but in sentences. We must learn by using the language. Practice is very important.Questions 11 to 13 are based on the passage you have just heard11. What is very important in learning a foreign language?12. What is the first step in learning a language?13. How should words be learned?Passage TwoWhen quite young, Daniel Webster did not always obey the' rules at school. One day the teacher caught him breaking a rule and asked him to come forward. to be punished, In that school, striking the open hand with a ruler was the punishment. Daniel's hands happened to be very dirty. Before going to the teacher's desk he wiped his hands on his. boots"Give me your hand, sir," demanded the teacher. Daniel put his fight hand out: The teacher looked at it a moment and said, "Daniel,: if you find' another hand' in this schoolroom as dirty as that, I'll let you go." Immediately from behind .Daniel's back came the left hand. "Here it is, sir," he replied. "That will do," said the teacher, laughing.. "You may go."Questions 14 to 16 are based on the passage you have Just heard14. Where did this story happen?15. Why was Daniel to be punished?16. Which of the following best describes. the boy?Passage ThreeThe word "sport" first meant something that people did in their free time. Later it often meant hunting wild animals and birds. About a hundred years ago the word was first used for organized games. This is the usual meaning of the word today. People spend a lot of their time playing football, basketball, tennis and many other sports. Many people play sports because they want to. A few people are paid for the sport they play. These people are called professional sportsmen. They may be sportsmen for only a few years, but during that time the best ones can earn a lot of money. For example, a professional footballer in England earns more than £30000 a year. The stars earn a lot more. International golf and tennis champions can make more than £ 500000 in a year. Of course, only few sportsmen can earn as much money as that. It is only possible in sports for individuals like golf, tennis and motor-racing. Perhaps the most surprising thing about sportsmen and money is this: the stars can earn more money from advertising than from playing their sports. An advertisement for sports equipment does not simply say "buy our things". It says: "Buy the same shirt and shoes as..." Famous sportsmen can even advertise things like watches and foods. They allow the companies to use their names or photographs and they are paid for this. Sport is no longer just something for people's spare time. But the productive performance of agriculture is even more important than this, because in nations where the productivity of farmers is low, most of the working population is needed to raise food and few people are available for production of industrial goods or for other activities required for economic growth. Indeed, one of the factors related most closely to the per capita income ( 人均收入 ) of a nation is the number of its population engaged in farming. In the poorest nations of the world, more than half of the population lives on farms. This compares sharply with less than 10 percent in Western Europe and less than 4 percent in the United States. In short, the course of economic development in general depends in a fundamental way on the productive performance of farmers. This performance, in turn, depends on how agriculture is organized and on the economic environment, or market structure, within which it works. In the following pages the performance of American agriculture is examined. It is reasonable to begin with a consideration of its market structure.61. This passage is most probably part of ______.A) a news item B) an advertisement C) a lecture D) an article62. What is most important to agriculture is ______ .A) its productive performanceB) the per capita income of farmersC) the amount of food it producesD) the production of industrial goods63. This passage will most probably be followed by a discussion of ________A) the market .structure of American agricultureB) the structure of American farming populationC) the various functions of American agriculture -mono-'-D) the organization of American agricultureQuestions 66 to 70 arc based on the following passage: t,^^In ancient time the most important examinations were spoken, not written. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made a special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing students for the doctor's degree.Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same questions, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and development of modern industry. A room full of students for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Certainly, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an objective test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To set an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like answers to students who have not learned the material properly.66. In the Middle Ages students______.A) took objective tests B) were timed by electric clocksC) specialized in one subject D) seldom took written exams67. Nowadays a student working for the doctor's degree ___A) has to take a kind of oral examinationB) must ask a number of questionsC) has to write a poemD) must take an advanced examination ^68. It may be concluded that examinations ______,A) should test only opinions B.! have changed since the Middle AgesC) should always be written D) are also given in factoriesQuestions 71 to 75 are based on the following passage;Crime has its own cycles, a magazine reported some years ago. According to the police records that have been studied for five years from over 2400 cities and towns, a surprising link is shown between changes in the season and crime patterns. The pattern of crime has varied very little over a long period of years. Murder reaches its high during July and August, as do other violent attacks. Murder, moreover, is more than seasonal: it is a weekend crime. It is also a nighttime crime: 62 percent of murders are committed between 6 p. m. and 6 a. m.Unlike the summer high in crimes of bodily harm, robbing has a different cycle. You are most likely to be robbed between 6 p. m. and 2 a. m. on a Saturday night in December, January, or February. The month with least crimes of all? May - except for one strange fact. More dog bites are reported in this month than in any other month of the year. Apparently our seasonal cycles of knowledge are completely different from our tendencies for crimes. Professor Huntington made extensive studies to discover the seasons when people read serious books, attend scientific meetings and get highest results on examinalions. In all cases, he found a spring high and autumn high separated by a summer low.Possibly, high temperature and high humidity (?jg) cause our strange and violent summer actions, but police officials are not sure. "There is. of course, no proof of a connection between humidity and murder," they say. "Why murder's high time should come in ihe summer time we really don't know. " 17271. It is possible that it grew out of the discovery that some people did certain kinds of work better than others did them. That led to the concept of specialization, which means that people would specialize, or focus, on doing one specific job.Let’s take a man we’ll call Mr. Fielder, for example. He did everything connected with farming. He planted seeds, tended the fields, and harvested and sold his crops. At the same time, he did many other jobs on the farm. However, he didn’t make the bricks for his house, grind the wheat for his flour, or cut his trees into boards. He also did not make the plows(犁), the work boots, or any of the other hundreds of things a farm needs. Instead, he got them from people who specialized in doing each of those things.Suppose there was another man we shall call Mr. Plowright. Using what he knew about farming and working with iron, Mr. Plowright invented a plow that made farming easier. Mr. Plowright did not really like farming himself and wanted to specialize in making really goodplows. Perhaps, he thought, other farmers will trade what they grow for one of my plows. How did Mr. Plowright let people know what he was doing? Why, he advertised, of course. First he opened a shop and then he put up a sign outside the shop to attract customers. That sign may have been no more than a plow carved into a piece of wood and a simple arrow pointing to the shop door. It was probably all the information people needed to find Mr. Plowright and his really good plows. Many historians believe that the first outdoor signs were used about five thousand years ago. Even before most people could read, they understood such signs. Shopkeepers would carve into stone, clay, or wood symbols for the products they had for sale.A medium, in advertising talk, is the way you communicate your message. You might say that the first medium used in advertising was signs with symbols. The second medium was audio, or sound, although that term is not used exactly in the way we use it today. Originally, just the human voice and maybe some kind of simple instrument, such as a bell, were used to get people’s attention.A crier, in the historical sense, is not someone who weeps easily. It is someone, probably a man, with a voice loud enough to be heard over the other noises of a city. In ancient Egypt, shopkeepers might hire such a person to spread the news about their products. Often this primitive form of advertising involved a newly arrived ship loaded with goods. Perhaps the crier described the goods, explained where they came from, and praised their quality. His job was, in other words, not too different from a TV or radio commercial in today’s world.41.What probably led to the start of advertisement?A. The discovery of iron.B. The specialization of labor.C. The appearance of new jobs.D. The development of farming techniques.42. To advertise his plows, Mr. Plowright .A.praised his plows in publicB. placed a sign outside the shopC. hung an arrow pointing to the shopD. showed his products to the customers43.The writer makes up the two stories of Mr. Fielder and Mr. Plowright in order to .A. explain the origin of advertisingB. predict the future of advertisingC. expose problems in advertisingD. provide suggestions for advertising44.In ancient Egypt, a crier was probably someone who .45.A. owned a ship B. had the loudest voiceC. ran a shop selling goods to farmersD. functioned like today’s TV or radio commercial45. The last two paragraphs are mainly about .A.the history of advertisingB. the benefits of advertisingC. the early forms of advertisingD. the basic design of advertisingBBelow is a selection from a popular science book.If blood is red, why are veins(静脉)blue?Actually, veins are not blue at all. They are more of a clear, yellowish color. Although blood looks red when it’s outside the body, when it’s sitting in the vein near the surface of the skin, it’s more of a dark reddish purple color. At the right depth, these blood-filled veins reflect less red light than the surrounding skin, making them look blue by comparison.Which works harder, you heart or your brain? That kind of depends on whether you’re busy thinking or busy exercising. Your heart works up to three times harder during exercise, and shifts enough blood over a lifetime to fill a supertanker. But in the long run, your brain probably tips it, because even when you’re sitting still your brain is using twice as much energy as your heart, and it takes four to five times as much blood to feed it.Why do teeth fall out, and why don’t they grow back in grown-ups?Baby (or “milk”) teeth do not last long; they fall out to make bigger room for bigger, stronger adult teeth later on. Adult teeth fall our when they become damaged, decayed and infected by bacteria. Once this second set of teeth has grown in, you’re done. When they’re gone, they are gone. This is because nature figures you’re set for life, and what controls regrowth of your teeth switches off.Do old people shrink as they age?Yes and no. Many people do get shorter as they age. But, when they do, it isn’t because they’re shrinking all over. They lose height as their spine(脊柱)becomes shorter and more curved due to disuse and the effect of gravity(重力). Many (but not all) men and women do lose height as they get older. Men lose and average of 3-4 cm in height as they age, while women may lose 5 cm or more. If you live to be 200 years old, would you keep shrinking till you were, like 60 cm tall, like a little boy again? No, because old people don’t really shrink! It is not that they are growing backwards ----- their legs, arms and backbones getting shorter. When they do get shorter, it’s because the spine has shortened a little. Or, more often, become more bent and curved. Why does spinning make you dizzy(眩晕的)?Because your brain gets confused between what you’re seeing and what you’re feeling. The brain senses that you’re spinning using special gravity-and-motion-sensing organs in your inner ear, which work together with your eyes to keep your vision balance stable. But when you suddenly stop spinning the system goes out of control, and your brain thinks you’re moving while you’re not.Where do feelings and emotions come from?Mostly from an ancient part of the brain called the limbic system. All mammals have thisbrain area ----- from mice to dogs, cats, and humans. So all mammals feel basic emotions like fear, pain and pleasure. But since human feelings also involve other, newer bits of the brain, we feel more complex emotions than any other animal on this planet. If exercise wears you out, how can it be good for you?Because our bodies adapt to everything we do to them. Almost from the moment it is born, the baby monkey can move around and hold tightly to its mother. During the first few days of its life the baby will approach and hold onto almost any large, warm, and soft object in its environment, particularly if that object also gives it milk. After a week or so, however, the baby monkey begins to avoid newcomers and focuses its attentions on “mother” ---- the real mother or the mother-substitute(母亲替代物).During the first two weeks of its warmth is perhaps the most important psychological(心理的)thing that a monkey mother has to give to its baby. The Harlows, a couple who are both psychologists, discovered this fact by offering baby monkeys a choice of two types of mother-substitutes ---- one covered with cloth and one made of bare wire. If the two artificial mothers were both the same temperature, the little monkeys always preferred the cloth mother. However, if the wire model was heated, while the cloth model was cool, for the first two weeks after birth the baby monkeys picked the warm wire mother-substitutes as their favorites. Thereafter they switched and spent most of their time on the more comfortable cloth mother. Why is cloth preferable to bare wire? Something that the Harlows called contact(接触的)comfort seems to be the answer, and a most powerful influence it is. Baby monkeys spend much of their time rubbing against their mothers’ skins, putting themselves in as close contact with the parent as they can. Whenever the young animal is frightened, disturbed, or annoyed, it typically rushes to its mother and rubs itself against her body. Wire doesn’t “rub” as well as does soft wire cloth. Prolonged(长时间的)“contact comfort” with a cloth mother appears to give the babies confidence and is much more rewarding to them than is either warmth or milk.According to the Harlows, the basic quality of a baby’s love for its mother is trust. If the baby is put into an unfamiliar playroom without its mother, the baby ignores the toys no matter how interesting they might be. It screams in terror and curls up into a fury little ball. If its cloth mother is now introduced into the playroom, the bay rushes to it and holds onto it for dear life. After a few minutes of contact comfort, it obviously begins to feel more secure. It then climbs down from the mother-substitute and begins to explore the toys, but often rushes back for a deep embrace(拥抱)as if to make sure that its mother is still there and that all is well. Bit by bit its fears of the new environment are gone and it spends more and more time playing with the toys and less and less time holding on to its “mother.”50.Psychologically, what does the baby monkey desire most during the first two weeks of its life?A. WarmthB. MilkC. ContactD. My characteristic optimism was alive only when I reminded myself that I would be doing what I had wanted to do since I was fourteen ------- teaching English.School started, but I felt more and more as if I were in a foreign country. Was this rural area really New Jersey? My students took a week off when hunting season began. I was told they werealso frequently absent in late October to help their fathers make hay on the farms. I was a young woman from New York City, who thought that “Make hay while the sun shines”just meant to have a good time. But, still, I was teaching English. I worked hard, taking time off only to eat and sleep. And then there was my sixth-grade class ---- seventeen boys and five girls who were only six years younger than me. I had a problem long before I knew it. I was struggling in my work as a young idealistic teacher. I wanted to make literature come alive and to promote a love of the written word. The students wanted to throw spitballs and whisper dirty words in the back of the room.In college I had been taught that a successful educator should ignore bad behavior. So I did, confident that, as the textbook had said, the bad behavior would disappear as I gave my students positive attention. It sounds reasonable, but the text evidently ignored the fact that humans, particularly teenagers, rarely seems reasonable. By the time my boss, who was also my taskmaster, known to be the strictest, most demanding, most quick to fire inexperienced teachers, came into the classroom to observe me, the students exhibited very little good behavior to praise. My boss sat in the back of the room. The boys in the class were making animal noises, hitting each other while the girls filed their nails or read magazines. I just pretended it all wasn’t happening, and went on lecturing and tried to ask some inspiring questions. My boss, sitting in the back of the classroom, seemed to be growing bigger and bigger. After twenty minutes he left, silently. Visions of unemployment marched before my eyes.I felt mildly victorious that I got through the rest of class without crying, but at my next free period I had to face him. I wondered if he would let me finish out the day. I walked to his office, took a deep breath, and opened the door.He was sitting in his chair, and he looked at me long and hard. I said nothing. All I could think of was that I was not an English teacher; I had been lying to myself, pretending that everything was fine. When he spoke, he said simply, without accusation, “You had nothing to say to them.”“You had nothing to say to them”. he repeated.” No wonder they are bored. Why not get to the meat of literature and stop talking about symbolism. Talk with them, not at them. And more important, why do you ignore their bad behavior”? We talked. He named my problems and offered solutions. We role-played. He was the bad student, and I was the forceful, yet, warm, teacher. As the year progressed, we spent many hours discussing literature and ideas about human beings and their motivations. He helped me identify my weaknesses and strengths. In short, he made a teacher of me by teaching me the reality of Emerson’s words: “The secret to education lies in respecting the pupil.”Fifteen years later I still drive that same winding road to the same school. Thanks to the help I received that difficult first year, the school is my home now.55.It can be inferred from the story that in 1974A. the writer became an optimistic personB. the writer was very happy about her new jobC. it was rather difficult to get a job in the USAD. it was easy to get a teaching job in New Jersey56.According to the passage, which of the following is most probably the writer’s problem as a new teacher?A.She had blind trust in what she learnt at college.B. She didn’t ask experienced teachers for advice.C. She took too much time off to eat and sleep.D. She might lose her students’respect.C. She couldn’t teach the same class any more.D. She couldn’t ignore her students’bad behavior any more.58.Which of the following gives the writer a sense of mild victory?A.Her talk about symbolism sounded convincing.B. Her students behaved a little better than usual.C. She managed to finish the class without crying.D. She was invited for a talk by her boss after class.59.The students behaved badly in the writer’s classes because .A.They were eager to embarrass her.B. She didn’t really understand them.C. Those who had supported Britain found themselves unable to stay in the new United States, and most went to the Ontario region of Canada. From there they spread to all parts of the country. They were soon followed by many thousands who were attracted by the cheapness of land. Within fifty years, the population of Upper Canada had reached 100,000-- mainly people from the United Sates. In the east, the Atlantic Provinces had been settled with English speakers much earlier. But even today these areas contain less than 10 percent of the population, so that they have only a minor role in the development of Canadian ‘norm’. In Quebec, the use of French language and culture remains from the first period of exploration, with the majority of people using French as the mother tongue : here English and French coexist uneasily.Because of its origins, Canadian English has a great deal in common with the rest of the English spoken in North America--and it’s often difficult to distinguish for people who live outside the region. To British people, Canadians may sound American; to Americans, they may sound British. Canadians themselves insist on not being identified with either, and certainly there is a great deal of evidence in support of this view.21. supported22. spread23. cheapness24. reached25. even26. minor27. remains28. using French as the mother tongue29. it’s often difficult to distinguish for people30. not being identified with eitherPart II Reading ComprehensionSection A Passage Reading31-35 CDAAC 36-40 CCDBD 41-45 DABDB .Section B46-50 HNAGO 51-55 LDJCBPart III Integrated TestingSection A Cloze56-60DBDAA 61-65ACDBD 66-70BBAAA 71-75 DBCCDSection B76. 【答案】It means network.77. 【答案】People can find various types of information.78. 【答案】communicating79. 【答案】any personal information80. 【答案】Be careful to decide whether the information is true.。

Part IV writing (15marks, 30 minutes)
The living condition of college students has been improved greatly compared with that of many years ago. But still it is far from satisfactory. Usually four people share a small bedroom, which may not be equipped with bathroom, air conditioner or TV set. It is likely for roommates to have quarrels if we fail to adapt this situation.
The failure to get along with each other will first affect our mood. We will feel upset and even depressed. This bad mood will then have a negative effect on our sleep, appetite and study. Since normally we are not allowed to change our dormitory after
at least one semester, the poor relationship between roommates will be harmful.
So we must be more considerate, tolerant and unselfish in order to have a smooth relationship. For example, when others are asleep, we should lower our voice and walk quietly. We should also help others when they are ill or in trouble.。
