Explain the concept of "consecutive interpreting" and its importancein the field of translation and interpretation.Consecutive interpreting refers to the technique of orally translating a speaker's message after he or she has finished speaking. The interpreter listens to a part of the speech, takes notes, and then delivers the translation while the speaker pauses. This allows for a more accurate and comprehensive interpretation as the interpreter has time to process and analyze the information before translating.Consecutive interpreting is important in various contexts such as conferences, business meetings, and legal proceedings. It allows for effective communication between individuals who speak different languages, ensuring that the intended message is accurately conveyed. The interpretermust have strong listening and note-taking skills, as well as cultural awareness, to provide an accurate interpretation.2. Discuss the role of technology in the field of translation and its impact on the work of translators.Technology has significantly impacted the field of translation, revolutionizing the way translators work and improving efficiency. Computer-assisted translation (CAT) tools, such as translation memory systems, help translators store and reuse previously translated segments, ensuring consistency and reducing the time required for translation.Machine translation technologies, such as Google Translate, have also become popular tools for translators. While machine translation can provide a quick draft translation, human intervention is still necessary to ensure accuracy and quality. Translators rely on their language skills and cultural knowledge to refine and optimize machine-generated translations.Additionally, technology has facilitated communication and collaboration among translators and clients through online platforms and project management tools. Translators can easily access reference materials, communicate with clients, and work on projects remotely.3. Describe the challenges faced by translators when translating idiomatic expressions and cultural references.Translating idiomatic expressions and cultural references presents several challenges for translators. Idioms often have a specific meaning that may not be directly translatable into another language. Translators mustcarefully consider the context and intended meaning of the idiom to find an equivalent expression or construct a new one that conveys the same idea.Cultural references, such as jokes, puns, or historical events, can be particularly challenging to translate. These references may not have direct equivalents in the target language, requiring the translator to find alternative ways to convey the intended humor or cultural significance.Translators must possess strong cultural knowledge and understanding of both the source and target languages to effectively navigate these challenges. They need to strike a balance between maintaining the original meaning and adapting the expression or reference to the target audience.Part III:翻译题Translate the following passage into English:在全球化的时代,跨国企业在全球范围内展开业务活动已成为常态。

1. And everywhere in his neighborhood in Serekunda, Gambia’s largest city, there was talk of easy money to be made in Europe.然而,在冈比亚的城市塞莱昆达他所居住的地方,人们到处都在谈论着“欧洲赚钱容易”这个话题。
点评:该句的重点在于词性的转换译法:关键词---talk如果将该词译成汉语的名词,一是听起来很蹩脚,不符合汉英行文的习惯,二是不符合英译汉技法的要求。
这一点在我们讲授英译汉部分时曾经重点谈到一个例句:The woman’s extramarital affairs with her boss soon became talk of the town.这个女人与其老板的关系很快传遍全城。
或,大街小巷都在谈论着这个女人与其老板的风流韵事。
2. Most of them have stories that echo Mr. Jallow’s.他们中的大多数都有着与杰罗先生相似的经历。
点评:该句中定语从句的动词“echo”是关键词。
原意为“回声”“回响”,但在本句中要在上下文的语义基础上引申为“与。
相似”的含义。
我们在授课过程中曾讲过,英语国家的写作思路是:首尾呼应法,即:The first paragraph echoes the last paragraph.3. “There is everything in there,”said Diego Cañamero, the leader of the farm workers’union in Andalusia, which tries to advocate for the men.“那里要什么有什么,”安达卢西亚农场工人工会的领袖迭戈·卡纳梅洛说,该组织努力在为这些人争取生活的权利,点评:该句中的“advocate”原意为“拥护”“倡议”,但在此句中应该根据前文正确理解为“为。
CATTI笔译实务冲刺班英译汉测试题-参考译文
The findings of medical research are disseminated too slowly医学科研成果传播速度过慢ON JANUARY 1st the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation did something that may help to change the practice of science. It brought into force a policy, foreshadowed two years earlier, that research it supports (it is the world’s biggest source of charitable money for scientific endeavors, to the tune of some $4bn a year) must, when published, be freely available to all. On March 23rd it followed this up by announcing that it will pay the cost of putting such research in one particular repository of freely available papers.1月1日,比尔和梅琳达·盖茨基金会启动实施了一项两年前就开始酝酿的政策,这或许有助于改变科学界的一个惯例。
按照该政策,该基金会赞助的科研项目(比尔和梅琳达·盖茨基金会是全球科研赞助规模最大的慈善基金会,每年资助额度高达40亿美元左右)必须将公布的科研成果提供给各方无偿使用。
3月23日,比尔和梅琳达·盖茨基金会又发表声明称,将出资把此类科研成果纳入一个专门的免费科研论文库。
To a layman, this may sound neither controversial nor ground-breaking. But the crucial word is “freely”. It means papers reporting Gates-sponsored research cannot be charged for. No pay walls. No journal subscriptions. That is not a new idea, but the foundation’s announcement gives it teeth. It means recipients of Gates’largesse can no longer offer their wares to journals such as Nature, the New England Journal of Medicine or the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, since reading the contents of these publications costs money.对圈外人来说,这种做法似乎既无争议也无创新。

2019年英语初级翻译资格考试笔译冲刺试题2
2019年英语初级翻译资格考试笔译冲刺试题21. But the men, who have usually used their family’slife savings to get here, are mostly left alone但警察对绝大部分通常倾其家庭的生活积蓄来这里闯荡的男人们一般不予以干涉。
点评:该句的前面是这样的一个句子:Occasionally, the policebring bulldozers to tear down the shelters. 有时候,警察开来推土机拆除避难所。
该句讲述了那些到欧洲去的移民在西班牙南部省份的安达卢西亚的树林里过着颠沛流离的生活。
他们自己用废弃的东西临时搭建的破屋经常被警察们拆除。
这句中的被动语态“left alone”要给予准确理解,从这句话中还能够侧面了解西班牙的警察们对穷人的一点同情心。
2. Some drift into town to socialize and buy supplies,if they have money.一些人溜达到城里去参加社交活动,如果有钱的话,去购买些生活日用品。
点评:该句中“drift into”原意为“漂流”的意思,但在此句中则表现出那些移民在晚间百无聊赖,无所事事地在大街上闲逛的特点。
该句注重词义的恰当选择。
3. But when he arrived there, his uncle’s phone rangand rang.但当他来到这里,他叔叔的电话就打不通了。
点评:“rang and rang”是英语中表示电话铃的象声词。
在这句中通过该词的重复使用表现出“无人接听”的含义。
我们在授课中曾讲到英语的象声词:onomatopoeia,并例举了很多类似的词,如:give me a ring, give me a tinkle都表示给某人打电话,再如,a hot pan sizzles滚烫的油锅发出4. But I told him he was nothing to me.但我告诉他,他对我也没有什么协助。

To Err Is Human by Lewis ThomasEveryone must have had at least one personal experience with a computer error by this time. Bank balances are suddenly reported to have jumped form $379 into the millions, appeals for charitable contributions are mailed over and over to people with crazy sounding names at your address, department stores send the wrong bills, utility companies write that they’re turning everything off, that sort of thing. If you manage to get in touch with someone and complain, you then get instantaneously typed, guilty letters from the same computer, saying, “Our computer was in error, and an adjustment is being made in your account.”These are supposed to be the sheerest, blindest accidents. Mistakes are not believed to be the normal behavior of a good machine. If things go wrong, it must be a personal, human error, the result of fingering, tampering a button getting stuck, someone hitting the wrong key. The computer, at its normal best, is infallible.I wonder whether this can be true. After all, the whole point of computers is that they represent an extension of the human brain, vastly improved upon but nonetheless human, superhuman maybe. A good computer can think clearly and quickly enough to beat you at chess, and some of them have even been programmed to write obscure verse. They can do anything we can do, and more besides. It is not yet known whether a computer has its own consciousness, and it wouldbe hard to find out about this. When you walk into one of those great halls now built for the huge machines, and standing listening, it is easy to imagine that the faint, distant noises are the sound of thinking, and the turning of the spools gives them the look of wild creatures rolling their eyes in the effort to concentrate, choking with information. But real thinking, and dreaming, are other matters. On the other hand, the evidence of something like an unconscious, equivalent to ours, are all around, in every mail. As extensions of the human brain, they have been constructed the same property of error, spontaneous, uncontrolled, and rich in possibilities.Question 1: The title of the writing “To Err Is Human”implies thatA. making mistakes is confined only to human beings.B. every human being cannot avoid making mistakes.C. all human beings are always making mistakes.D. every human being is born to make bad mistakes.Question 2: The first paragraph implies thatA. computer errors are so obvious that one can hardly prevent them form happening.B. a computer is so capable of making errors that none of them is avoidable.C. computers make such errors as miscalculation and inaccurate reporting.D. computers can’t think so their errors are natural and unavoidable.Question 3: The author uses his hypothesis that “computers represent an extension of the human brain”in order to indicate thatA. human beings are not infallible, nor are computers.B. computers are bound to make as many errors as human beings.C. errors made by computers can be avoided the same as human mistakes can be avoided.D. computers are made by human beings and so are their errors.Question 4: The rhetoric the author employed in writing the third paragraph, especially the sentence “A good computer can think clearly and quickly enough to beat you at chess…”is usually referred to in writing asA. climax.B. personificationC. hyperboleD. onomatopoeiaQuestion 5: The author compared the faint and distant sound of the computer to the sound of thinking and regarded it as the product of A. dreaming and thinking B. some property of errors C. consciousness D possibilities参考答案:1. B2. A3. A4. B5. C。

Rare earth is the richest strategic resource of China. As of 2009,China’s reser ves of rare earth have reached 36 million tons, representing 36.4% of the world’s total. China also boasts the largest rare earth output in the world, accounting for 129,000 tons or 97% of the world’s total output in 2009. The overexploitation of rare eart h resources has posed a grave challenge to the sustainable development of China’s rare earth industry. In response to the problem in the exploitation of rare earth resources, the Chinese Government has intensified the policy control in recent years, implementing a mandatory production and export quota system. The rare earth exploitation of China is capped at 89,200 tons in 2010, up 8.4% year-on-year, while the export quota stands at 30,300 tons, down 39.5% year-on-year.Since 2009, China has strengthened its control over rare earth export, pushing up a new round of price hike of rare earth resource worldwide because of the shortage of supply. A case in point is neodymium, the spot market price of which in Shanghai reached RMB 316,500/ton as of September 30th, 2010, an increase of 224.6% compared with the RMB 97,500/ton in December 2008.汉译英 Passage 2中国特色社会主义法律体系形成,总体解决了有法可依的问题。

英语翻译资格笔译考试冲刺试题
1. And everywhere in his neighborhood in Serekunda, Gambia’s largest city, there was talk of easy money to be made in Europe.
然而,在冈比亚的城市塞莱昆达他所居住的地方,人们到处都在谈论着“欧洲赚钱容易”这个话题。
点评:
该句的重点在于词性的转换译法:关键词---talk
如果将该词译成汉语的名词,一是听起来很蹩脚,不符合汉英行文的习惯,二是不符合英译汉技法的要求。
这一点在我们讲授英译汉部分时曾经重点谈到一个例句:
The woman’s extramarital affairs with her boss soon became talk of the town.
这个女人与其老板的关系很快传遍全城。
或,大街小巷都在谈论着这个女人与其老板的风流韵事。
2. Most of them have stories that echo Mr. Jallow’s.
他们中的大多数都有着与杰罗先生相似的经历。
点评:
该句中定语从句的动词“echo”是关键词。
原意为“回声”“回响”,但在本句中要在上下文的语义基础上引申为“与。
相似”的含义。
我们在授课过程中曾讲过,英语国家的写作思路是:首尾呼应法,即:The first paragraph echoes the last paragraph.
3. “There is everything in there,” said Diego
Cañamero, the leader of the farm workers’ union in Andalusia, which tries to advocate for the men.
“那里要什么有什么,”安达卢西亚农场工人工会的领袖迭戈·卡纳梅洛说,该组织努力在为这些人争取生活的权利,点评:
该句中的“advocate”原意为“拥护”“倡议”,但在此句中应该根据前文正确理解为“为。
争取权利”。
我们曾讲过这样一个例句:We must advocate for the poor and powerless.我们必须为那些贫穷以及无权无势的人争取权利。
4. Now he shakes his head toward his neighbors, who will not talk to reporters.
此时,他朝他的邻居们摇了摇头,他并不想与记者交谈。
点评:
这句话中的定语从句是非限定性的,它的功能是修饰前边句子中的主语“he”,而不是“his neighbors”。
我们在英译汉分句译法中给了大量的例句重点讲解定于从句的译法。
当时我们曾讲到很多类似的例句,如:The woman has two sons who are working in the United States. The woman has two sons, who are working in the United States.这两句乍一看,似乎完全相同,但仔细推敲,你会发现:第一个句子是限定性定语从句,第二个句子是非限定性定语从句。
第一句应译为:这名妇女有两个在美国工作的儿子。
(言外之意,他可能还有其他子女),第二句应译为:这名妇女有两个儿子,都在美国工作。
(只有两个儿子)。
非限定性定语从句的作用可以修饰前边句子中的某一个名词或代词,也可能修饰靠它很近的名词,一切取决于上下文的含义。
5. But Mr. Cañamero says they are offered only the
least desirable work, like handling pesticides, and little of it at that.
但卡纳梅洛说,那里的人只给他们提供人家最不愿意干的工作,如处理杀虫剂,而且也只是一点点活儿而已。
大多数人没有工作签证。
点评:
该句中一个可能不被考生注意的环节就是“at that”这个短语。
它在句子中的位置一般是句尾,但语气较弱。
我们授课时给学员提供了多种并列及转折的连词用法,其中包括:and, besides, moreover, furthermore, what’s more, additionally, in addition, …at that等。
