A Note on the Geometry of Green-Lazarsfeld Sets Alexander Brudnyi ∗Department of Mathematics and Statistics University of Calgary Calgary,Canada Abstract We study some subsets of the Green-Lazarsfeld set Σ1(M )for a compact K¨a hler manifold M .1.Introduction.Let M be a compact K¨a hler manifold and H 1(M,C ∗):=Hom (π1(M ),C ∗).Given a character ξ∈H 1(M,C ∗)let C ξdenote the associated π1(M )-module.Let Σ1(M )be the set of characters ξsuch that H 1(π1(M ),C ξ)is nonzero.The structure of Σ1(M )was described in the papers of Beauville [Be],Simpson [S],and Campana [Ca]:There is a finite number of surjective holomorphic maps with connected fibres f i :M →C i onto smooth compact complex curves of genus g ≥1and torsion characters ρi ,ξj ∈H 1(M,C ∗)such that Σ1(M )= i ρi f ∗i H 1(C i ,C ∗)∪ j {ξj }.In this paper we study the components f ∗i H 1(C i ,C ∗)corresponding to trivial ρi .Theorem 1.1Let f :M →C be a surjective holomorphic map with connected
fibres of a compact K¨a hler manifold M onto a smooth complex curve C of genus g ≥1.Assume that ξ∈H 1(C,C ∗)is not torsion.Then
f ∗:H 1(π1(C ),C ξ)−→H 1(π1(M ),C f ∗ξ)
is an isomorphism.
2.Proof of Theorem1.1.
2.1.Let T2(C)⊂GL2(C)be the Lie subgroup of upper triangular matrices.By T2⊂T2(C)we denote the Lie group of matrices of the form
a b01 (a∈C∗,b∈C).
Also by D2⊂T2we denote the subgroup of diagonal matrices and by N2⊂T2 the subgroup of unipotent matrices.Let M be a compact K¨a hler manifold.For a homomorphismρ∈Hom(π1(M),T2)we letρa∈Hom(π1(M),C∗)denote the upper diagonal character ofρ.Further,N2acts on T2by conjugation.Any two homomorphisms from Hom(π1(M),T2)belonging to the orbit of this action will be called equivalent.It is well known that the class of equivalence ofρis uniquely defined by an element cρ∈H1(π1(M),Cρ

)(see e.g.[A,Prop.2]).Now our theorem is a consequence of the following result.
Theorem2.1Assume thatρ∈Hom(π1(M),T2)satisfies Ker(f∗)⊂Ker(ρa)but Ker(f∗)⊂Ker(ρ).Thenρa is a torsion character.
The next several sections contain some results used in the proof of Theorem2.1.
2.2.Let f:M→C be a holomorphic surjective map with connectedfibres of a compact K¨a hler manifold M onto a smooth compact complex curve C.Consider a flat vector bundle L on C of complex rank1with unitary structure group and let E=f∗L be the pullback of this bundle to M.Letω∈Ω1(E)be a holomorphic 1-form with values in E(by the Hodge decompositionωis d-closed).
Lemma2.2Assume thatω|V
z
=0for thefibre V z:=f−1(z)over a regular value z∈C.Thenω|V=0for anyfibre V of f.
If V is not smooth the lemma asserts thatωequals0on the smooth part of V. Proof.Denote by S⊂C thefinite set of non-regular values of f.By Sard’s theorem,f:M\f−1(S)→C\S is afibre bundle with connectedfibres.According to our assumption there is afibre V z of this bundle such thatω|V
z
=0.Thenω|V=0 for anyfibre V of f|M\f−1(S).In fact,for anyfibre V there is an open neighbourhood
O V of V diffeomorphic to R2×V such that E|O
V (∼=E|V)is the trivialflat vector
bundle(here E|V is trivial as the pullback of a bundle defined over a point).Any d-closed holomorphic1-form defined on O V that vanishes on V is d-exact,and so it vanishes on eachfibre contained in O V.Starting with a tubular neighbourhood
O V
z and taking into account thatω|O
V z
can be considered as a d-closed holomorphic
1-form(because E|O
V z is trivial)we obtain thatω|V=0for anyfibre V⊂O V
z
.
Then the required statement follows by induction if we cover M\f−1(S)by open tubular neighbourhoods offibres of f and use the fact that C\S is connected.
Consider nowfibres over the singular part S.Let O x⊂C be the neighbourhood of a point x∈S such that O x\S=O x\{x}is biholomorphic to D\{0}.In particular,π1(O x\S)=Z.Without loss of generality we may assume that V=f−1(x)is a deformation retract of an open neighbourhood U x of V and W x:=f−1(O x)⊂U x
