The results followseveral earlier studies that found eating eggs was generally healthy. The study collects data from six other earlier studies. It shows a 6 percent increased risk of heart disease when the number of eggs a person ate each day increased by half an egg.Norrina Allen, an associate professor at Northwestern University said that, in the United States, eggs are generally one of the top sources of cholesterol(胆固醇)in a person’s daily food. People with higher levels of cholesterol in their food are at increased risk of the development of heart disease later in life. However, Allen added that she would not say that eggs are completely unhealthy. “I’m not saying that people should take them completely out of their food,” she said. “I’m just suggesting that people eat them in a proper amount.”Some experts believe the new study does not prove that eggs are causing heart disease. “Cholesterol’s role in the development of heart disease has been discussed for more than 30 years,”said Bruemmer, an associate professor of medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. “This s tudy does have clear shortcomings, including self-reporting at a single time point,” he added.Bruemmer said, “Eggs in moderation(适度)are probably acceptable from a nutritional standpoint.” “Moderation,” he added, “is less than one egg a day, including eggs in foods such as bread”.Holly Andersen, a doctor at the NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell Medical Center, agrees that the study has “real shortcomings”. One problem Andersen has with the study is that a lot of the egg-eating people in the study also appeared to be eating much meat and proc essed meat. “If you’re taking a lot of processed meat, it doesn’t matter how many eggs you’re eating,” Andersen said. Also, Andersen said, “the study can only show there is a relation between eggs eating and heart disease. But it cannot prove eggs are the cause of the disease. It may just be that people eating a lot of eggs are also taking a lot of bacon.”1. What does Norrina Allen agree with?A. Eggs are completely unhealthy.B. Eggs contain the most cholesterol.C. Eggs should be eaten in a right amount.D. Eggs have no connection with heart disease.2. What is Bruemmer’s attitude towards the study?A. Interested.B. Doubtful.C. Concerned.D. Hopeful.3. What can we learn from Holly Andersen’s words?A. Eggs and meat cannot be eaten together.B. Processed meat may cause heart disease.C. Processed meat should be avoided.D. The study is supported by evidence.4. What’s the best title of the text?A. Do eggs cause heart disease?B. Are eggs the top source of cholesterol?C. What’s the proper amount of eggs eaten?D. Is the cholesterol to blame for heart disease?(3)Four Goals for Perfect LifeHealthy and FitThe first goal common to all of us is health and energy. 1 Today, with the incredible advances in medical science, the quality of our health and fitness, and our lifespan(寿命), is largely determined by design, not by chance. People with excellent health habits are far healthier, have more energy, and live longer and better than people who have poor health habits.Excellent Relationships2 Fully 85% of your happiness will be determined by the quality of your relationships at each stage, and in each area, of your life. How well you get along with people, and how much they like, love and respect you, has more impact on the quality of your life than perhaps any other factor.Do What You LoveThe third common goal is to do work that we enjoy, to do it well, and to be well paid for it. 3 You want to earn the very most that is possible for you at each stage of your career, whatever you do.4The fourth goal we all have in common is to achieve financial independence. 5 You want to be completely free of financial worries. You want to be able to order dinner in a restaurant without using the price listings to determine what you want to eat.A. We don’t want to get the job that we aren’t well paid and we don’t promote faster.B. Achieve Financial IndependenceC. Money is the most important for we can’t go without it.D. You want to reach the point in life where you have enough money so that you never have to worry about money again.E. You want to be able to get and keep the job you want, to get paid more and to get promoted faster.F. The second goal that we all have in common is to enjoy excellent relationships with the people we like and respect, and who like, love and respect us in turn.G. We all want to be healthy and fit, to have high levels of energy and to live free of pain and illness.【作文训练】一、应用文调查显示,中国长江江豚(finless porpoise) 受人类活动影响而濒临灭绝,目前总数大约为1000只。

They also spend plenty of time trying to dissimulate.Technology is rapidly catching up with the human ability to read faces. In America, facial recognition is used by churches to track prayers’attendance; in Britain, by shopkeepers to spot past thieves. This year Welsh police used it to arrest a suspect outside a football game. In China, it verifies the identities of ride-hailing (网约车) drivers, permits tourists to enter attractions and lets people pay for things with a smile. Apple’s new iPhone is expected to use it to unlock the home screen.Compared with human skills, such applications might expand steadily in scale. Some breakthroughs, such as flight or the Internet, obviously transform human abilities; facial recognition seems merely to encode them. Although faces are peculiar to individuals, they are also public, so technology does not, at first sight, intrude on something that is private. And yet the ability to record, store and analyse images of faces cheaply, quickly and on a vast scale promises one day to bring about major changes to our understanding of privacy, fairness and trust.Start with privacy. One big difference between faces and other biometric (计量生物学的) data, such as fingerprints, is that they work at a distance. Anyone with a phone can take a picture for facial-recognition programs to use. FindFace, an app in Russia, compares snaps of strangers with pictures on VKontakte, a social network, and can identify people with a 70% accuracy rate. Even if private firms are unable to join the dots between images and identity, the state often can. Photographs of half of America’s adult population are stored in databases that can be used by the FBI. Law-enforcement agencies now have a powerful weapon in their ability to track criminals, but at enormous potential cost to citizens’ privacy.1. 一阅读理解(共两节,满分30分)第一节(共10小题; 每小题2分,满分20分)AAnne is six years older than me. Growing up, we were very poor, and my mother worked evenings at a factory in a small town. Not seeing my mother much, Anne looked after me and my younger sister. During those hard years, Anne was always there for me, not only as a big sister, but as a mother and my best friend. When I was seventeen and had no money, I thought my only chance of going to college was if I could win a scholarship. I had an important interview for such an award. Anne at that time was struggling, surviving on a part-time job as she put herself through the local munity college after serving in the army. I told her of my interview. I asked her advice on what to wear and showed her my best outfit (装束) and how I planned to be careful, how I sat so that the hole in the bottom of my shoes would not be seen, but I wasn’t sure what I would do if it rained.Anne suggested that we go shopping, and we took the bus to the JCPenney store. We found a beautiful pair of leather shoes on sale. She told me to try them on, but I thought it was just for fun as neither of us had ever owned anything that expensive before. But Anne handed me the boxed shoes and said, “Here, I’ll buy these for you.”“But . . .” was all I could say.“You deserve them,” she replied. “This interview is important. I want to see you get that scholarship.”I was speechless as I knew this was a lot of money for her, and she would probably have to eat nothing but noodles for at least a month.I went to the interview and crossed my legs so that my beautiful new shoes shone with pride. I won the scholarship and became an engineer. Although they were nice leather everyday shoes, I didn’t wear them much because they were so special. Now, after 20 years have passed, I still have that pair of shoes with me, and I just wear them on those occasions when I need to feel special.1. When the author was 17, Anne _____.A. was serving in the armyB. was continuing her studyC. was a salesgirl at the JCPenney storeD. was working in a small pany2. The author went to the interview _____.A. acpanied by AnneB. wearing a pair of worn shoesC. with confidenceD. with great anxiety3. What would be the best title for the passage?A. An important interviewB. A special pair of new shoesC. Memories of poor childhoodD. Lifelong gratitude to a friendBLooking good, feeling goodBorn to a model mom and a suit maker dad, fashion was actually in my blood.I always had a strong desire to dress in a certain way and to stand out from the crowd.Imademy own toys whenI was a young child and sewed my first skirt at just 10 years old.Afriend’s mother took one look at my skirt and told me that I should be a patternmaker. In high school I started making my own clothes, mostly changing other things because I never liked anything how it was when I bought it. During the last two years of school, I worked part-time for a small business that made hand-painted silk clothingand bags. The owner became the teacher who got me into design in the first place. Another useful bit of work experience then came when I worked at a showroom during fashion week andfound it very exciting. From there I worked at a top clothing store while I got my business started. For my business I started out with the idea that everything I did would be hand-made and one-of-a-kind, specially made for one individual who hopefully had the same tastes as me. Every morning I jumped out of bed, went to my studio and worked on my projects. This just showed how enthusiastic I felt about my work. And at night I even dreamed of new designs!Fashion design is functional art. What I mean is that it’s something close to you and something you can touch and feel, and actually interact with. My advice to any young person who wants to be a fashion designer is to get the basic skills early on, such as sewing and pattern-making. Even if you end up specializing, it’s really important to understand all aspects of design in order to make high-quality clothes. Also, if you dream of having your own clothing line, the best thing to do is start wearing your clothes. You have to try and do this because that’s the way you’re going to develop something that’s all yours andunlike anyone else’s. I pas sionately believe that the right clothing can make people feel better and give them more confidence.4. When the author was in high school, she ______.A. wore the latest fashionsB.was fondofhand-painted clothingC. began to make clothes on her ownD. dressed in the same way as her classmates5. ADear Customers,I love slipping into a fortable chair for a long read, as I relax into the chair. I also relax into the author’s words, stories, and ideas. The physical book is so elegant that it disappears into the background, and what remains is the author’s world.Today, we at Amazon are excited to announce Kindle, a wireless, portable reading device with instant access to more than 90,000 books, magazines, and newspapers. We’ve been working on Kindle for more than three years. Our top design objective was for Kindle to disappear in your hands —to get out of the way —so you can enjoy your reading. We also wanted to go beyond the physical book. Kindle is wireless, so whether you’re lying in bed or riding a train, you can think of a book, and have it in less than 60 seconds. No puter is needed—you do your reading directly from the device. We chose the same wireless technology used in advanced mobile phones. But unlike mobile phones, there are no monthly wireless bills, no service or data plans, and no yearly contracts. There is no software to install(安装,设置). We want you to get lost in your reading and not in the technology.Kindle uses a new kind of display called electronic paper. Sharp and natural with no strong light, reading on Kindle is nothing like reading from a puter screen. Kindle weighs only 10.3 ounces —less than a paperback —but can carry two hundred books.Enjoy learning about Kindle and many thanks!1. I live not far from the Kairaku Park, which is one of the largest gardens in Japan, and famous for its near 10,000 plum trees. I am fortunate to have them all outside my backyard, and take advantage of the walking paths daily.I see the same trees and swans every day, but that day was different. At the edge of the small lake, I saw some new-born black swans. They were pretty and cute. They stayed with their mom. While taking a few photos of the sunset, I was interrupted by a high sound going on for some time. So, I turned around and saw one little swan was stuck by two stones. Its mother was trying to make it out but failed. I tried to get near but the mother was ever so angry! She wouldn’t allow me to get close, so I turned to an old man sitting on the bench and said, “Excuse me, the swan baby can’t move and I want to help it, but the mother is extremely angry! Could you please do me a favor?”After hearing my words, the man smiled at me first and then agreed to help me. He drove the mother away with great efforts, and for several times, he was almost hurt by the mother. Thanks to him, I was able to get there and push the little swan out of the gap finally. Oh, I really hoped it wasn’t injured, but at least it was alive and swimming! In spring, I become more physically active. Things around don’t make us, but Nature does, and it keeps us going. I am positive that all of us have a little piece of nature in our own neighborhoods. Somewhere we will be reminded why natural life is so important---because wegrow with it! Personally, I am happy that baby birds can put a smile on my face! I struggle for having a small number of “things” in life, and being filled with simple reality---at one with Nature.36. Actually, I started feeling bad before I even had my son. It started with severe anxiety about doctors’ appointments. The night I arrived home after giving birth, I had my first panic attack. I doubted I was having a slight heart attack. The next day, a public health nurse visited our home to see if everything was fine with me — whether I had a heart attack or suffered anything else or I was just all alright. She reassured me that I didn’t have a heart problem, a nd informed me that it was likely a panic attack. The nurse visit was part of a program that provided support for new moms. Sadly, it didn’t include any information on PPD.By my six-week postpartum checkup, I knew something was wrong. I was having difficulty falling asleep and I felt like I was slowly going crazy. Panic attacks were more frequent. I talked with my obstetrician (产科医师), but unfortunately, she was not trained to recognize or cure PPD. Now I didn’t know whom to turn to for help.I told my situation to my mom and my husband but they didn’t understand what I was really experiencing. They figured that being a new parent was tough for anyone, so feeling a little down after giving birth —“baby blues”— was just normal and not necessarily a sign of depression. But my cousin, also a new mom, knew me well, and she could see that something was wrong. With my cousin’s encouragement, I went to see my family doctor and I was finally diagnosed (被诊断为) with PPD. I started taking medication, and began to feel better. Eventually, I rehabilitated, feeling like my old self again. It is common for new moms to get the “baby blues” mixed up with PPD. The early symptoms are similar, so it can delay a diagnosis because you think the feelings will go away. I do think more attention should be drawn to the latter. After all, a new research finds that about 1 in 7 new mothers will be seriously troubled by PPD.41. Why did the nurse visit the author?A. To care for her baby.B. To cure her of her heart disease.C. To help check her condition.D. To offer her information on PPD.42. After talking with her obstetrician, what did the author realize?A. She was really suffering from PPD.B. Her obstetrician cou ldn’t really help her.C. She should have received training in PPD.D. Her obstetrician didn’t really care about her.43. What’s the main idea of Paragraph 4?A. The author’s cousin’s suggestion to her.B. The author’s great concern about her condition.C. The great difference between PPD and baby blues.D. The author’s family members’ different reaction to her condition.44. What does the underlined word “rehabilitated” in Paragraph 5 mean?A. recovered.B. succeeded.C. resigned.D. returned.45. What’s the author’s main purpose in writing the text?A. To tell about her suffering “baby blues”.B. To express her ideas about giving birth.C. To call for attention to postpartum depression.D. To show the importance of family to new moms.CChichen Itza is an ancient site sitting in Yucatan State, Mexico, in Central America. This site has been listed as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World and is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.Chichen Itza was an extremely important religious site for 1,000 years for the ancient Maya people. The Maya civilization began before 2000 BC and lasted until 1697 when Spain took away their last remaining city. The Maya people lived in southeastern Mexico, all of Guatemala and Belize, and the western parts of Honduras and El Salvador. From around 600 to 1050 AD, in Chichen Itza, people were able to buy things that were difficult to find. This was thanks to its port, Isla Cerritos, which allowed the city to trade through water. In the 10th century, it became the capital of the area from central Yucatan to the north coast. The ancient city of Chichen Itza was well planned in design. The pyramids and temples were built in groups, with paved walkways in between. People have found over 80 of these walkways all over the site. The main building groups are the Great North Platform, the Old Chichen, plus the Ossario and Central Groups. At the center of the site is a castle in a pyramid shape. In Spanish, it’s called El Castilo, which means the castle. But its real name is the Temple of Kukulkan and it actually sits on top of a much older temple. On the 20th of March and the 22nd of September, the sun’s rays create a strange shadow across the Temple of Kukulkan. It looks just like a snake slithering (滑动) down the pyramid staircase. And in fact, the temple is named after the Maya feathered snake god, Kukulkan.46. What can we learn about the Maya civilization from the text?A. Its development totally depended on Chichen Itza.B. The European ship was first observed in 2009, when a sonar (声纳) exploration by the Swedish Maritime Administration (SMA) indicated a large object in the area. However, it was not until early 2019 that researchers from Soton and MMT found evidence of the sunken ship using underwater robotic cameras. When the team observed the pictures of the 60-foot-long shipwreck, they were surprised to discover it was 99 percent complete. The scientists considered that the wreck’s good condition is due to its place in the Baltic Seabed, where the oxygen levels are low. Oxygen is key to most ocean l ife’s survival. Therefore, such an environment where the shipwreck stays reduces orcompletely removes the creatures that feed on rotting wood.So although this ship is contemporary to the times of Christopher Columbus, it shows a remarkable level of preservation after 500 years at the bottom of the sea. Dr. Pacheco-Ruiz, who led the MMT effort, said, “It’s almost like it sank yesterday. It’s a truly astonishing sight.”The scientists are unsure what let the ship sink. However, the ship’s guns, which are in their “ready to fire” positions, indicate it may have been the victim of a naval battle. Since the ship dates back to the early 16th century, historians predict it may have sunk during Sweden’s three-year independence war with its Danish rulers between 1521 and 1523. Alternatively, it could also have been involved in the border dispute between Russia and Sweden from 1554 to 1557.The ship is by far the best-preserved shipwreck ever found from the Age of Exploration, when Europeans explored the world by sea. What’s more exciting is that the ship is similar to the Pinta and La Nina, which Comlubus famously sailed toward North America. The scientists, who continue to observe the shipwreck, hope the boat’s design will expose some of the technologies availab le to the Italian explorer during his 1492 voyage of discovery.51. What scientific achievement did Soton’s and MMT’s researchers make?A. Discovering a wreck using sonar.B. Getting the wreck out or icy water.C. Identifying the object found by SMA.D. Making the ancient wreck well preserved.52. What can we learn about the place of the sunken ship?A. It is generally unfit for creatures to live in.B. It is tough for scientists to do research.C.
