Developed by two doctors in the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it’s an excellent water collector. Unfortunately, you must carry the necessary equipment with you, since it’s all but impossible to find natural substitutes. The only c omponents required, though, are a 5' 5' sheet of clear or slightly milky plastic, six feet of plastic tube, and a container— perhaps just a drinking cup — to catch the water. These pieces can be folded into a neat little pack and fastened on your belt.To construct a working still, use a sharp stick or rock to dig a hole four feet across and three feet deep. Try to make the hole in a damp area to increase the water catcher’s productivity. Place your cup in the deepest part of the hole. Then lay the tube in place so that one end rests all the way in the cup and the rest of the line runs up — and out — the side of the hole. Next, cover the hole with the plastic sheet, securing the edges of the plastic with dirt and weighting the sheet’s center down wit h a rock.

2.One psychological effect of diet products is that people tend to . A.try out a variety of diet foods B.hesitate before they enjoy diet foods C.pay attention to their own eating habits
Diet products significantly weaken us psychologically. On one level,we are not allowing our brain to admit that our weight problems lie not in actually losing the weight, but in controlling the consumption of fatty,high-calorie, unhealthy foods.Diet products allow us to jump over the thinking stage and go straight for the scale (秤) instead. All we have to do is to swallow or recognize the word “diet” in food labels.
On the other hand, even e-tailers like Amazon have experimented with pop-up shopping concepts. It is important to bear in mind that consumers prefer face-to-face interactions instead of online interactions during shopping, meaning that physical stores are going to stay there.

2018高考英语(通用)二轮训练:阅读理解(词义猜测)含答案

2018高考英语(通用)二轮训练:阅读理解(词义猜测)含答案阅读理解---词句猜测题词句猜测题常见命题方式:1.The underlined word...in the...paragraph refers to/means “”.2.By saying...in the first paragraph, the author means that . 3.The meaning of...in Paragraph...is related to .4.Which of the following has the closest meaning to...(Paragraph...)? 5.The underlined sentence...in the...paragraph probably means that . 6.Which of the following words can take the place of the word “...”?1.

第一编专题一考点4[层级一真题题组]A(2018·北京卷,D)Preparing Cities for Robot CarsThe possibility of self-driving robot cars has often seemed like a futurist's dream, years away from materializing in the real world.Well, the future is apparently now.The California Department of Motor Vehicles began giving permits in April for companies to test truly self-driving cars on public roads. The state also cleared the way for companies to sell or rent out self-driving cars, and for companies to operate driverless taxi services.California,it should be noted, isn't leading the way panies have been testing their vehicles in cities across the country. It's hard to predict when driverless cars will be everywhere on our roads. But however long it takes, the technology has the potential to change our transportation systems and our cities, for better or for worse, depending on how the transformation is regulated. While much of the debate so far has been focused on the safety of driverless cars(and rightfully so),policymakers also should be talking about how self-driving vehicles can help reduce traffic jams, cut emissions(排放)and offer more convenient, affordable mobility options. The arrival of driverless vehicles is a chance to make sure that those vehicles are environmentally friendly and more shared.Do we want to copy—or even worsen—the traffic of today with driverless cars?Imagine a future where most adults own individual self-driving vehicles. They tolerate long, slow journeys to and from work on packed highways because they can work, entertain themselves or sleep on the ride, which encourages urban spread. They take their driverless car to an appointment and set the empty vehicle to circle the building to avoid paying for parking.Instead of walking a few blocks to pick up a child or the dry cleaning, they send the self-driving minibus. The convenience even leads fewer people to take public transport—an unwelcome side effect researchers have already found in ride-hailing(叫车)services.A study from the University of California at Davis suggested that replacing petrol-powered private cars worldwide with electric,self-driving and shared systems could reduce carbon emissions from transportation80%and cut the cost of transportation infrastructure(基础设施)and operations40%by2050.Fewer emissions and cheaper travel sound pretty appealing. The first commercially available driverless cars will almost certainly be fielded by ride-hailing services, considering the cost of self-driving technology as well as liability and maintenance issues(责任与维护问题).But driverless car ownership could increase as the prices drop and more people become comfortable with the technology.Policymakers should start thinking now about how to make sure the appearance of driverless vehicles doesn't extend the worst aspects of the car-controlled transportation system we have today. The coming technological advancement presents a chance for cities and states to develop transportation systems designed to move more people, and more affordably. The car of the future is coming. We just have to plan for it.

1. Which of the following is nearest/closest in meaning to"... "?2. The underlined word, means_______.3. The underlined phrase, means_______.4. Theun derlined sentence,means_______.利用上下文的提示猜测词义的方法有如下几种:1.根据定义或解释猜测词义【例题】(1)A calendar is a list of the days, weeks, months of a particular year.根据定义, calendar 的意思是日历.。

(2)A biography is the story of a person's life written by someone else 根据定义,biography 的意思是凡别人写的生平叫做传记。

(3)Some writers are no longer writing about the modern values of the USA--money, Success or expensive things to buy.2.破折号后而的内容是对 value 一词的具体解释。

【高三英语试题精选】2018年高考阅读理解词义猜测题解题技巧

2018年高考阅读理解词义猜测题解题技巧respected schools tend to have good jobsC poor children with certificates are favoured in job marketsD children attending ordinary schools achieve great success【解析】B。

请看原Without examinations, employers will look for employees from the highly respected schools and from families known to them—a form of favourtism will replace equality破折号后的句子是对前面进行解释说明的,二者是同位关系,因此要猜测favourtism的意思可从前面句子的意思入手。

答案为B。

3、根据构词法(合成、派生、转化等)进行猜测在英语中,有很多词可以在前面加前缀,在后面加后缀,从而构成一个词,乍看起,这个词可能是新词,但掌握了一定的构词知识,就不难猜出它的词义。

例如“Our parties are aimed for children 2 to 10,” Anaclerio said, “and they’re very interactive and creative in that they built a sense of drama based on a subject”中interactive是由前缀inter-(相互的)和active(活动的,活跃的)而构成的,同时根据上下的意思可以判断,该词的含义应是“互动的”。

Perhaps, we can see some possibilities for next fifty years But the next hundred?possibility

(1)What does the underlined word “downside”in Paragraph 4 probably mean?(2016年课标全国卷Ⅱ)(2)What does the underline phrase “a pipe dream”in Paragraph 3 mean?(2016年课标全国卷Ⅲ)(3)What does the word “contributions”in the last paragraph refer to?(2015年课标全国卷Ⅰ)常见的命题形式有:The underlined word in the second paragraph means “________”.Which of the following words is closest in meaning to the underlined word in the last paragraph? The underlined word “________”in Paragraph 2 can best be replaced by “________”.What does the phrase “________”in Paragraph 1 mean?

Nearby is the Indianapolis race course, where the nation’s most famous car race is h eld each year on May 30th.
