“Dr. Papaderos, what is the meaning of life?”The usual laughter followed, and people stirred to go. Papaderos held up his hand and stilled the room and looked at me for a long time, asking with his eyes if I was serious and seeing from my eyes that I was.“I will answer your question.”Taking his wallet out of his hip pocket, he fished into a leather billfold and brought out a very small round mirror, about the size of a quarter. And what he said went like this:“When I was a small child, during the war, we were very poor and we lived in a remote village. One day, on the road, I found the broken pieces of a mirror. A German motorcycle had been wrecked in that place.I tried to find all the pieces and put them together, but it was not possible, so I kept only the largest piece. This one, and, by scratching it on a stone, I made it round. I began to play with it as a toy and became fascinated by the fact that I could reflect light into dark places where the sun would never shine—in deep holes and crevices(裂缝)and dark closets. It became a game for me to get light into the most inaccessible places I could find.I kept the little mirror, and, as I went about my growing up, I would take it out in idle moments and continue the challenge of the game. As I became a man, I grew to understand that this was not just a child’s game but a metaphor for what I might do with my life. I came to understand that I am not the light or the source of light. But light—truth, understanding, knowledge—is there, and it will shine in many dark places only if I reflect it.I am a fragment(碎片)of a mirror whose whole design and shape I do not know. Nevertheless, with what I have I can reflect light into the dark places of this world—into the black places in the hearts of men—and change some things in some people. Perhaps others may see and do likewise. This is what I am about. This is the meaning of my life.”1. On hearing the author’s question, Dr. Papaderos __________ at first.A. laughed at his foolishnessB. wasn’t sure of the answerC. doubted his seriousnessD. wa sn’t interested at all2.

Peanuts to ThisProudly reading my words, I glanced around the room, only to find my classmates bearing big smiles on their faces and tears in their eyes. Confused, I glanced toward my stone-faced teacher. Having no choice, I slowly raised the report I had slaved over, hoping to hide myself. “What could be causing everyone to act this way?”Quickly, I flashed back to the day Miss Lancelot gave me the task. This was the first real task I received in my new school. It seemed simple: go on the Internet and find information about a man named George Washington. Since my idea of history came from an ancient teacher in my home country, I had never heard of that name before. As I searched the name of this fellow, it became evident that there were two people bearing the same name who looked completely different! One invented hundreds of uses for peanuts, while the other led some sort of army across America. I stared at the screen, wondering which one my teacher meant. I called my grandfather for a golden piece of advice: flip(掷)a coin. Heads—the commander, and tails—the peanuts guy. Ah! Tails,my report would be about the great man who invented peanut butter, George Washington Carver. Weeks later, standing before this unfriendly mass, I was totally lost. Oh well, I lowered the paper and sat down at my desk, burning to find out what I had done wrong. As a classmate began his report, it all became clear,“My report is on George Washington, the man who started the American Revoluti on.” The whole world became quiet! How could I know that she meant that George Washington?Obviously, my grade was awful. Heartbroken but fearless, I decided to turn this around. I talked to Miss Lancelot, but she insisted: No re-dos; no new grade. I felt that the punishment was not justified, and I believed I deserved a second chance. Consequently, I threw myself heartily into my work for the rest of the school year. Ten months later, that chance unfolded as I found myself sitting in the headmaster's office with my grandfather, now having an entirely different conversation. I smiled and flashed back to the embarrassing moment at the beginning of the year as the headmaster informed me of my opinion to skip the sixth grade. Justice is sweet!1.What did the author's classmates think about his report?A.Controversial. B.Ridiculous. C.Boring. D.Puzzling.2.Why was the author confused about the task?A.He was unfamiliar with American history.B.He followed the advice and flipped a coin.C.He forgot his teacher's instruction.D.He was new at the school.3.The underlined word“burning”in Para. 3 probably means ________.A.annoyed B.ashamed C.ready D.eager4.In the end, the author turned things around ________.A.by redoing his task B.through his own effortsC.with the help of his grandfather D.under the guidance of his headmaster【要点综述】本文讲述了作者作为一个外来移民初入美国学校时,由于对美国历史不了解而闹出的一个笑话,但作者通过努力最后终于提高成绩并实现跳级。

It is over 40 years since first atomic bomb was dropped on a major city in Japan. Yet even now its effects are showing themselves and may continue to do so for years to come. Much effort and human energy have been used to try to prevent such a terrifying thing from happening again. So far there is no guarantee that it will not. Countries which already possess nuclear knowledge and resources have bombs stored away which are powerful enough to wipe out all life on earth. But this is not all. Other countries, which previously were not so advanced in technology, are gradually buying materials that can be used for making atomic devices. This nuclear energy will naturally be of great value in helping the economy of poorer nations. The generation of electricity through nuclear power came directly from the original work on the atom bomb. Because of the increase in demand for energy and the possibility of decreasing supplies of oil and natural gas, the interest in electricity has increased. One of the by-products of nuclear power stations is plutonium (钸) produced from unclear fuel: plutonium is ingredient (成分) in bomb-making. It means that there are far more opportunities for the manufacture of bombs. This brings the problem to a full circle again. How can something so valuable and useful be controlled so that it works for the benefit and not the destruction of man? (from )1. The effects of dropping the first atomic bomb ________.A. are not overB. may go on foreverC. could last much longerD. will not be over in the near future2. The writer says that enough atomic bombs have already been manufactured to ________.A. wipe out JapanB. last foreverC. act as a peace-keeping deviceD. destroy all living things3. The advantage of less developed countries being able to make atomic devices is that it ______.A. gives them more opportunities for workB. will help poor countries to become richerC. will enable them to make better explosivesD. will be of great value to them4. The second paragraph tells us that the increased demand for electricity today ________.A. has led to the decrease in supplies of oilB. means that more countries are interested in nuclear powerC. has increased the risk of accidental explosionsD. has increased the very means of producing more atomic bombs【答案与解析】1. For those who study the development of intelligence (智力) in the animal world,self-awareness is an important measurement. An animal that is aware (意识) of itself has a high level of intelligence. Awareness can be tested by studying whether the animal recognizes itself in the mirror, that is, its own reflected image Many animals fail this exercise bitterly, paying very little attention to the reflected image. Only humans, and some intelligent animals like apes and dolphins, have been shown to recognize that the image in the mirror is of themselves. Now another animal has joined the club. In the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, researchers report that an Asian elephant has passed the mirror self-reflection test.“We thought that elephants were the next important animal,”said Diana Reiss of the Wildlife Conservation Society, an author of the study with Joshua M. Plotnik and Fans B. M. de Waal of Emory University. With their large brains,Reiss said, elephants “seemed like cousins to apes and dolphins.”The researchers tested Happy. Maxine and Patty, three elephants at the Bronx Zoo. They put an 8-foot-square mirror on a wall of the animals' play area (out of the sight of zoo visitors) and recorded what happened with cameras, including one built in the mirror. The elephants used their long noses to find what was behind it,and to examine parts of their bodies.Of the three, Happy then passed the test,in which a clear mark was painted on one side of her face. She could tell the mark was there by looking in the mirror, and she used the mirror to touch the mark with her long nose.Diana Reiss said,“We knew elephants were intelligent, but now we can talk about their intelligence in a better way.”

The United States is faced with serious traffic problems. Too many cars travel on the freeways to and from the city. This heavy traffic causes delays and lots of pollution from cars that are using their engines but not moving anywhere. Many cars going nowhere is called a “traffic jam.”While many cities in the United States have traffic problems, some of the worst are in Los Angeles, California. Los Angeles is a big city with a large downtown area. One of the reasons why there is so much traffic is that few people use public transportation to get aroundExperts say one possible solution to the traffic problem in Los Angeles would be to makepeople want to use the public transportation system of buses instead of their own cars. People say the buses should be made easier, faster, less costly and more dependable than driving a car.One sugges tion is to reduce the cost of riding the bus. People who usually drive their cars could save a lot of money on gas and parking costs. Also, Los Angeles could make the buses easier for people to use. The buses could travel to more places in the city. And there could be more special lanes on the freeways that only buses could drive in. These changes would make taking the bus faster and easier than driving a car.Other experts have said that the best way to ease traffic problems is to charge people money to drive on the freeways. These charges, or tolls, would be for the most crowded roads. The tolls would be in effect during the times of day when most people drive to work and home again. These times in the morning and late afte rnoon are called “rush hour”. People would try to avoid driving on these roads, which would decrease the amount of traffic. Also ,the money collected from these tolls could be used to improve the roads and public transportation system.36. On that cold day years ago,as we watched the students walking into the hall, one of my colleague turned to me and said,“Graduation will be one of the happiest and one of the saddest time of your life.” At my inquiry,he answered,“Because the students you have gotten to know have to leave.”As years went by,my previous confusion about my colleagues words no longer existed. When I came across naughty students,I have had to rethink why I chose to be a teacher. It obviously isn’t the money. Once a former computer science student of mine called me,asking me if I wanted to have a change. He was working at Nintendo Corporation. His salary was higher than my current one, though I have more education and have worked for over a decade. With my programming skills,he said he could get me hired. I thanked him,but declined his kind offer.A few days before this current graduation, while working on final grades,I found a note a student had slipped in with her homework. She thanked me for being her teacher and said the things she had learned in my class—not about math, but about life—would be things she would remember long afterthe math skills had faded away. As I finished reading,I remembered why I had become a teacher. Now,on this sunny graduation day,as I again observed the sea of blue hats and gowns,I did so with renewed dedication and a deeper sense of satisfaction—I will always be grateful that I am a teacher.4. How did the author feel when he heard his colleague talking about graduation for the first time?A. Satisfied.B. Puzzled.C. Shocked.D. Sad.5. The computer science student called up the author ___ .A. to inform the author of his present jobB. to persuade the author to work with himC. to thank the author for being his teacherD. to share his joy and satisfaction with the author6. What does the underlined part “blue hats and gowns” in the last paragraph refer to?A. School life memories.B. Graduates clothes.C. Graduation ceremonies.D. Decorations in the hall.7. What is the authors purpose of writing the text?A. To express his devotion to teaching.B. To talk about the meaning of graduation.C. To give advice on how to be a good teacher.D. To compare two different graduation ceremonies. The meaning of silence varies among cultural groups. Silences may be thoughtful,or they may be empty when a person has nothing to say. A silence in a conversation may also show stubbornness,or worry. Silence may be viewed by some cultural groups as extremely uncomfortable; therefore attempts may be made to fill every gap with conversation. Persons in other cultural groups value silence and view it as necessary for understanding a person’s needs. Many Native Americans value silence and feel it is a basic part of communication among people, just as some traditional Chinese and Thaipersons do. Therefore, when a person from one of these cultures is speaking and suddenly stops, what maybe implied (暗示)is that the person wants the listener to consider what has been said before continuing. In these cultures, silence is a call for reflection.Other cultures may use silence in other ways, particularly when dealing with conflicts among people or in relationships of people with different amounts of power. For example,Russian,French, and Spanish persons may use silence to show agreement between parties about the topic under discussion. However,Mexicans may use silence when instructions are given by a person in authority rather than be rude to that person by arguing with him or her. In still another use, persons in Asian cultures may view silence as a sign of respect, particularly to an elder or a person in authority.Nurses and other care-givers need to be aware of the possible meanings of silence when they come across the personal anxiety their patients may be experiencing. Nurses should recognize their own personal and cultural construction of silence so that a patients silence is not interrupted too early or allowed to go on unnecessarily. A nurse who understands the healing value of silence can use this understanding to assist in the care of patients from their own and from other cultures.8. What does the author say about silence in conversations?A. It implies rudeness.B. It promotes friendship.C. It is culture-specific.D. It is content-based.9. Who might regard silence as a call for careful thought?A. The Chinese.B. The French.C. The Mexicans.D. The Russians.10. What does the author advise nurses to do about silence?A. Let it continue as the patient pleases.B. Break it while treating patients.C. Evaluate its harm to patients.D. Make use of its healing effects.11. What can be the best title for the text?A. Sound and SilenceB. What It Means to Be SilentC. Silence to Native AmericansD. Speech Is Silver; Silence Is GoldThe batteries of the future may be made of paper. Researchers at Binghamton University,State University of New York have created a biodegradable (能生物降解的),paper-based battery that is more efficient than previously possible. For years, there has been excitement in the scientific community about the possibility of paper-based batteries as an eco-friendly alternative. However, the proposed designs were never quite powerful enough, they were difficult to produce and it was questionable whether they were really biodegradable. This new design solves all of those problems. Associate Professor Seokheun “Sean” Choi from the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department and Professor Omowunmi Sadie from the Chemistry Department worked on the project together. Choi engineered the design of thepaper-based battery, while Sadie was able to make the battery aself-sustaining bio battery. “There’s been a dramatic increase in electronic waste and this may be an excellent way to start reducing that,” said Choi. “Our hybrid paper battery exhibited a much higher power-to-cost ratio (比率)than all previously reported paper-based batteries powered by bacteria.”The bio battery uses a hybrid of paper and engineered polymers (聚合物)—were the key to giving the batteries biodegrading properties. The team tested the degradation of the battery in water and it clearly biodegraded without the requirements of special facilities, conditions or introduction of other microorganisms. The polymer-paper structures are lightweight and flexible. Choi said that flexibility also provided another benefit. “Power enhancement can be potentially achieved by simply folding or piling the flexible paper-polymer batteries,” said Choi. The team said that producing the biobatteries is a fairly straightforward process and that the material allows for changes depending on what structure or shape is needed. The work was supported by a grant from the National Science Foundation and done through the Center for Research in Advanced Sensing Technologies and Environmental Sustainability (CRASTES).12. What is a problem of the previously proposed designs?A. They are too expensive.B. They aren’t really biodegradable.C. There is no easy way to produce them.D. It is extremely difficult to charge them.13. What advantage did Choi mention of the newly invented battery in paragraph 3?A. Its lower cost-to-power ratio.B. Its function of reducing water pollution.C. Its larger surface area.D. Its new organization of bacteria.14. What can we know about the degradation of the bio battery?A. It goes the best in pure water.B. It requires no special conditions.C. It results in a harmful state of soil.D. It relies mainly on the paper in the battery.15. What does the underlined word “enhancement” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?A. Produce.B. Reserve.C. Flow.D.

Experts believe that storms and severe weather in North America and Asia have disruptedbird flight paths across the world and swept huge numbers of bird species towards the British Isles.Birds flying to the other side of the Atlantic or to the Pacific to lay their eggs have been trapped in Britain and Ireland, adding their numbers to native species, and causing great excitement in the bird-watching community.Local birdwatchers have already observed a total of 442 species in the British Isles this year. The highest number ever seen in one year is 445, in 2008.“We only need four more to break our record,〞said Lee Evans, who runs the British Birding Association. “With three months to go I’m sure we’ll do it.〞Last month an extremely rare Siberian Rubythroat bird was seen in Scotland, sending hundreds of birdwatchers north in the hope of catching a glimpse of this colourful Asian beauty. Another very uncommon bird, the bufflehead duck was cited in Cornwell and caused similar excitement. “I couldn’t believe it,〞said Evans. “The poor thing was completely knackered. It must have been blown to England by the storms while trying to fly from Canada to the southern United States for the winter. Tha t’s 3000 miles!〞Evans said that global warming over the past decade was playing a key role in transforming bird movements across the world. In addition, melting Arctic sea ice may also be opening up bird flight paths over the North Pole, making it easier for birds from the Pacific — such as the slaty-backed gull and tufted puffin, both of which appeared in London earlier this year— to reach Britain.Bird-watching is becoming an increasingly popular hobby among all age groups, added Evans. “A fifth of our members are under 18. This is a round-the-year hobby that you can enjoy from the kitchen window or from a car. More and more people are bird-watching, and as a result more and more unexpected species are being spotted in the British Isles.〞1.What is the passage mainly about?A. The results of global warming.B. Changes in the British bird population.C. Increasing environmental pollution.D. Worsening British weather.2. The underlined word “knackered〞is closest in meaning to __________.A. boredB. knockedC. spottedD. tired3. How many more bird species are needed to equal the British bird-watching record?A. 3.B. 4.C. 442.D.445.4. According to the passage, which of the following birds comes from Asia?A. Slaty-backed gull.B. Bufflehead.C. Rubythroat.D. Tufted puffin.5. Which of the following is NOT mentioned as a possible reason for seeing more bird species in Britain?A. When Frida Kahlo's paintings were on show in London,a poet described her paintings as“ a ribbon (丝带)around a bomb”.Such comments seem to suggest Kahlo had a big influence on the art world of her time.Sadly, she is actually a much_bigger_name today than she was during her time.Born in 1907 in a village near Mexico City ,Kahlo suffered from polio(小儿麻痹症)at the age of seven. Her spine (脊柱)became bent as she grew older. Then,in 1925,her back was broken in several places in a school-bus accident.Throughout the rest of her life, the artist had many operations, but nothing was able to cure the terrible pain in her back. However, the accident had an unexpected side effect. While lying in her bed recovering,Kahlo taught herself to paint. In 1929,she got married to Diego Rivera, another famous Mexican artist.Rivera's strong influences on Kahlo's style can be seen in her early works, but her later works from the 1940s,known today as her best works, show less influence from her husband.Unfortunately, her works did not attract much attention in the 1930s and 1940s,even in her home country. Her first one-woman show in Mexico was not held until 1953.For more than a decade after her death in 1954,Kahlo's works remained largely unnoticed by the world, but in the 1970s her works began to gain international fame at last.弗里达·卡洛是一位画家,她的作品还有艺术影响力,但是她的名气在现在比她当时的时代要大得多。
