On his birthday, can you guess what people gave him? That’s ri ght---stamps. Victor’s favourite stamps came from France. He had almost every stamp from 1954 to 2004. He only needed one. That was a 1974 special edition. It was very hard to find. He looked for it everywhere. He asked his friends and relatives to help him. But nobody could find the stamp. It made Victor very sad. “Don’t worry. Never give up,” his father said to him. If you have enough patience, you’ll find it one day.” “I hope so,” Victor said.Victor also liked writing. He had a penfriend in France. They wrote to each other every month. Victor’s penfriend, Phillip, usually used new stamps to send letters. Sometimes, his mother gave him stamps to use. Once Phillip’s mother gave him a big, green stamp. It looked old. When Victor received the letter, he was very surprised. On the envelope, he looked carefully at the stamp. It was the 1974 special edition stamp. Victor was so happy. He told his sister, his mother and his father.“ You see,” his father said. “ You did find your stamp. His family were very poor farmers, and there was never enough to eat. Frank decided he did not want to be farmer. He took a shortbusiness course, and went to work as a salesman in a large city.Woolworth realized he had a natural skill for showing goods to attract people’s interest, but he soon learned something more important. One day his boss told him to sell some odds and ends (小商品) for as much as he could get. Frank put all these things on one table with a sign which said FIVE CENTS EACH. People fought and pushed to buy the things and the table was soon cleared. Soon afterwards, Woolworth opened his own store., selling goods at five and ten cents. But he had another lesson to learn before he became successful. That is, if you want to make money by selling low price goods, you have to buy them in large quantities directly form the factories. Once, for example, Woolworth went to Germany and placed an order for knives. The order was so large that the factory had to keep running 24 hours a day for a whole year. In this way, the price of the knives was cut down by half.By 1919, Woolworth had over 1000 stores in the US and Canada , and opened his first store in London . He made many millions and his name became famous throughout the world. He always run his business accord ing to strict rules, of which the most important was: “ THE CUSTOMER IS ALWAYS RIGHT.”5. If you want to succeed, the rule is the only way.C. stores must always follow the customer’s orders if they want to make more money.D. stores should do their best to meet the customer’s needs if they want to be successful.(C)After a busy day of work and play, the body needs to rest. Sleep is necessary for good health.During this time, the body recovers from the activities of the previous day. The rest that you get while sleeping makes it possible for your body to prepare itself for the next day. There are four levels of sleep, each being a little deeper than the one before. As you sleep, your body relaxes little by little. Your heart beats more slowly, and your brain slows down. After you reach the fourth level, your body shifts back and forth from one level of sleep to the other. Although your mind slows down, you will dream from time to time. Scientists who study sleep point out that when you are dreaming, your eyeballs begin to move more quickly (although your eyelids are closed). This stage of sleep is called REM, which stands for rapid eye movement. If you have trouble falling asleep, some people suggest breathing very slowly and very deeply. Other people believe that drinking warm milk will make you drowsy. There is also an old suggestion that counting sheep will put you to sleep.9. Is this not so?’ ” The students agreed, amused by their own behavior.“You may have wondered why you all had different cups, but I put them here on purpose. You see they represent (代表) life itself. Life is like that tea and the cups are like the physical circumstances(状况) of your life. You all got the same thing in your cups — tea. And yet you can not truly enjoy it in your envy of another’s cup. It’s just the same with life. You forget to enjoy your own life when you concentrate on envyin g the circumstances of someone else’s life.So now, close your eyes, and taste your own tea. Really taste it. The length of your hair is genetically determined. When it reaches a certain length, it stops growing. When you clear up the dead split ends, this make your hair look healthier, but not necessarily longer.Myth: If you skip meals, you lose weight fast.Truth: There’s no truth in this advice. Not only will you lose weight by starving yourself, butaccording to Carol Ann Rinzler, this may actually cause you to gain weight. Rinzler reasons that missing a meal causes your metabolism(新陈代谢) to slow down so that you burn food more slowly. This only makes you feel hungrier and by the time you finally do reach the table you will probably eat more food. Strange as it may seem, studies show that eating several small meals and snacks throughout the day is a more healthy way to lose pounds.Myth: If you swallow gum,it will stay inside your stomach for seven years.Truth: Actually, it takes just a few days for gum to make its exit---not seven years, says NeiIzenberg, M. D., editor of Kids Health Organization. But because gum is made of the same thing as rubber, it cannot be fully digested in your stomach--- so if you gum up the works on a regular basis, you might find yourself in a sticky situation.Myth: The best way to stop a nosebleed is to lift your head back.Truth: Now that’s bad advice. Bloody noses are caused by broken blood vessels, so while lifting your head back might stop the fluid from rushing out of your nose, it won’t stop the bleeding; you’ll just end up swallowing lots of blood. Your best bet? “Rest quietly. Don’t poke or pick, and the blood will naturally clot (凝结) within a minute or two”. Suggests Dr. Izenberg.14.The length of your hair is determined by ________A. cutting it oftenB. your geneC. the food you eatD. clearing up the dead split ends15.According to Carol Ann Rinzler, skipping meals will __________.A. help you lose weight fastB. help you lose weight slowlyC. cause you to become fatterD. make you burning food more quickly16.Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. AWhat shaking the head means is not always the same in different countries. Maybe some visitors would be surprised when they first e to India. When they talk to an Indian, they would find he would often shake his head. The visitors might think that the Indian doesn’t like what they say. But in fact, they would be pletely wrong.Indians always shake their heads when they talk to others. It doesn’t mean “No”. If someone wants to visit India, he should know this, or he will be in trouble. One day, a foreign officer went to India on business. He hired a car and asked an Indian to drive him. When he told his driver to take him to his office, the Indian shook his head at once. The officer said again and the driver shook his head again. At last the officer, of course, got angry.“How dare you refuse my order?”he shouted, “Drive me to my office at once!”The driver answered in quite a loud voice, too. “Yes, sir!”But to the officer’s surprise, the driver shook his head at the same time. The car started and the foreign officer was now too surprised to say a word. He thought about it for a while, and then he nodded with a smile, “‘No’means ‘Yes’here!”21.What does shaking one’s head mean all over the world?A.Yes.B.No.C.Glad.D.Yes or No.22.What should you do in India if you agree with somebody?A.Shake your head.B.Nod your head.C.Speak in a loud voice.D.Say it again and again.23.Why did the officer go to India?A.He went there to visit his friendB.He went there to buy a car.C.He went there to learn driving.D.He went there because of his job.24.Why did the officer get angry?A.Because the driver didn’t understand him.B.Because the driver still shook his head after he said again.C.Because the driver didn’t like the officer.D.Because the driver didn’t answer in a loud voice.25.What can we learn from the story?A.When you are in India, you should always shake your head.B.You shouldn’t shake your head if you’re a driver.C.Shaking head will make others get angry.D.Different countries have different customs.BIf you want to bee a fluent English speaker you should take some advice: There are four skills in learning English. They are reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The most important thing you must remember is that if you want to improve your speaking and writing skills you should first master the skills of reading and listening.Read as much as you can. But your reading must be active. It means that you must think about the meaning of the sentence, the meaning of the unfamiliar words, etc. There is no need for you to pay much attention to grammars or try to understand all the unfamiliar words you eacross, but the fact that you see them for the first time and recognize them whenever you see them, for example, in other passages or books, is enough. It would be better to prepare yourself a notebook so you can write down the important words or sentences in it.As for listening, there are two choices: besides reading, you canlisten every day for about 30 minutes. You can only pay attention to your reading and bee skillful at your reading, then you can catch up on your listening. Since you have lots of inputs in your mind, you can easily guess what the speaker is going to say. This never means that you should not practise listening. For listening you can listen to cartoons or some movies that are specially made for children. Their languages are easy. Or if you are good at listening you can listen to VOA or BBC programs every day. Again the thing to remember is being active in listening and preferably taking some notes. If you follow these pieces of ad vice, your speaking and writing will improve automatically, and you can be sure that with a little effort they will bee perfect.26.According to the author, which should you improve first among the four skills?A.Reading and listening. B.Reading and writing.C.Writing and speaking. D.Speaking and listening.27.The underlined phrase “e across”in the second paragraph can probably be replaced by “_____”.A.meet by accident B.discoverC.find on purpose D.look for28.The author seems to agree with the view that ________. A.everyone should listen to VOA or BBC programs every dayB.you needn't practise listening if you keep on reading every day C.being good at reading is helpful in improving your listeningD.you should take notes of whatever you are hearingCWe were late as usual. My husband had insisted on watering the flowers in the garden by himself, and when he discovered that he couldn’t manage he asked me for help at the last moment. So now we had an hour to get to the airport. Luckily, there were not many cars or buses on the road and we were able to get there just in time.We checked in and went direct to a big hall to wait for our flight(航班) to be called. In the end there was another announcement telling us that passengers waiting for Flight LJ108 could get a free meal voucher(餐券) and that the plane hadn’t left Spain for technical reasons. We thought that meant that it wasn’t safe for the plane to fly. We waited again for a long time until late in the evening when we were asked to report again. This time we were given free vouchers to spend the night ina nearby hotel. The next morning after a bad night because of all the planes taking off and landing, we reported back to the airport. Guess what had happened while we were asleep! Our plane had arrived and taken off again. But sometimes it does not seem like the same language. In fact, there are some important differences between British English and American English.First of all, they sound very different. Often, Americans don't say each word separately. They say several words together. Americans may say “I dunno”instead of “I don't know”. However, the British are more careful on their speech. They usually say all the words and keep them separate. Also, some letters have different sounds. For example, the Americans say the “a”in half like the “a”in cat. But the British say the “a”in half like the “o”in soft.Sound is not the only difference between British English and American English. Words sometimes have different meanings too. Some American words are never used in England. The same thing is true of some British words in America. For example, the vocabulary for cars and driving is very different. Americans drive trucks, but in England they drivelorries. Many expressions are also different in the two countries. In England, if you are going to telephone friends, you “ring them up”. In America you “give them a call”.There are also sometime s differences in grammar. For example, Americans usually use the helping verb “do”when they ask a question. They say “Do you have class today?”But the British often leave out the helping verb. They say “Have you class today?”All these differences can be confusing if you are learning English. But most languages are like this. Languages change over time. When people live in separate places, the languages change in different ways. This is what happened to English. It can also happen to other languages, such as French. Many people in Canada speak French but their French is very different from the French of France.33.pared to the British, Americans are usually________.A.more careful about saying wordsB.less careful about saying words C.easier to understandD.slower speakers34.Some letters in English________.A.always sound the sameB.have different sounds in the US and England C.don't changeD.have an unusual sound35.The vocabulary for cars and driving is________.A.an example of British EnglishB.different in the US and England C.an example of modern technologyD.the same in the US and England 第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

In this article, Professors Dennis Bramble, and Daniel Lieberman suggest that the ability to run was a decisive factor in the development of our species. According to the two scientists, humans possess a number of anatomical(人体结构的)features that make them surprisingly good runners.“We are very confident that strong selection for running, which came at the expense of the historical ability to live in trees-was helpful in the origin of the modern human body form,”says Bramble, a biology professor at the University of Utah.Traditional thinking up to now has been that the upright body form of modern humans has come about as a result of the ability to walk, and that running is simply a by-product of walking. Furthermore, humans have usually been regarded as poor runners compared to such animals as dogs, horses or antelopes. However, this is only true if we consider fast running over short distances. Even Olympic athlete can hardly run as fast as a horse can gallop, and can only keep up a top speed for fifteen seconds or so. Horses and antelopes, on the other hand, can run at top speed for several minutes, clearly outperforming us in this respect. But when it comes to long-distancerunning, humans do astonishingly well. They can maintain a steady pace for miles, and their overall speed compares favorably with that of horses or dogs.Bramble and Lieberman examined twenty-six anatomical features found in humans. One of the most interesting of these is the nuchal ligament(颈背的韧带). When we run, it is this ligament that prevents our head from pitching back and forth or from side to side. Therefore, we are able to run with steady heads held high. The nuchal ligament is not found in any other surviving primates (灵长类动物), although the fossil(化石)record shows that Homo erectus, an early human species that walked upright, much as we do, also had one. Then there are our Achilles tendons(跟腱)at the backs of our legs, which have nothing to do with walking. When we run, these tendons behave like springs, helping to push us forward. Furthermore, we have low, wide shoulders, virtually disconnected from our skulls (the bony part of the head), another anatomical adaptation which allows us to run more efficiently. But what evolutionary advantage is gained from being good long-distance runners? One assumption is that this ability may have permitted early humans to obtain food more effectively. “What these features and fossil facts appear to be telling us is that running evolved in order for our direct ancestors to compete with other carnivores (animals that eat meat) for access to the protein needed to grow the big brains that we enjoy today.”says Lieberman.11.We can learn from the passage that the human ability to run _______.A. was only recently described in a scientific journalB. played an important part in human evolutionC. was considered more natural than the ability to live in treesD. contributed to the form of human language12.According to the second paragraph, humans _______A. are better runners than most other animalsB. are not good at running short distancesC. compare unfavorably with horses and dogsD. are poor long-distance runners13.It appears that the nuchal ligament _______.A. enables us to run with steady headsB. is found in modern primates onlyC. prevents the head from being held highD. is a unique feature of carnivores14.The passage does NOT tell us that _______A. early humans had an advantage in obtaining food thanks to the running abilityB. fossils help us better understand human evolution.C. our Achilles tendons are an adaptation for running efficientlyD. big brains may have been evolved for running long-distanceBClose your eyes for a minute and imagine what life would be like if you had a hundred dollars less.
