Save the Sea ——Letter of Suggestion
Dear Sir or Madam, I’m a student in senior high school. While taking a whalewatching trip to the sea, I found that the water has been heavily polluted, so I’m writing to offer some advice on stopping pollution. First of all, we need to tell people the bad effects that water pollution will cause. Then, limit the number of tourists coming to the seaside. The fewer the tourists are, the less polluted the water will be. Besides, raise people’s awareness of protecting the sea by giving lectures or organizing activities in public places or at school.

Warming Up provides two activities to spark students' interest in the topic. Of course, before the class, the students must have gathered some information to make preparations for this class. Many kinds of their favorite sea animals are presented in their vivid pictures. Students are encouraged to introduce them using some new expressions such as at an aquarium,on a snorkelling trip.Pre-reading is designed to further stimulate their interest in the topic of the unit. Meanwhile, students may have some basic information about the text. The reading passage Old Tom the Killer Whale tells about two anecdotes witnessed by the writer himself. The teacher can first get students to skim the text for the characters in the two anecdotes and get the main idea of each anecdote. Then let them scan for further understanding. In order to let students pay attention to the writer's vivid description, the teacher can ask them to do a blank-filling exercise in pairs to find out some key verbs and verb phrases. Having done this, students must have had a very clear understanding of the whole hunting and saving process. To make their understanding easier, the teacher should deal with any language problems while they are reading. And then underline some useful words and expressions. For further thinking, students are expected to work in pairs or groups. They will discuss the problems and work out the answers cooperatively, choosing a reporter in their group. Students will think actively,so various answers are possible. To consolidate the contents of the reading passage, students should be required to retell the passage in the name of Old Tom or the baleen whale or James with as many key words as possible. At the end of the class,by holding a debate, the teacher can arouse students' interest further as well as make them aware of the relationship between man and animals and the importance of banning whaling. 1.Get students to learn the useful new words and expressions in this part:anecdote,annual,witness,accommodation,shore,opposite,yell,pause,telescope,teamwork,dive,depth,lip,urge,abandon,shark,relationship,help...out.2.Let students learn about several different types of whales, especially the killer whales. 1.Enable the students to learn to talk about their favorite sea animals.2.Develop students' reading ability by learning to read about the killer whales and let them learn different learning skills.3.Develop their creative thinking ability. 1.Arouse students' great interest in sea animals.2.Make them aware of the relationship between man and animals and the importance of banning whaling.3.Develop students' sense of cooperative learning. 1.Reading comprehension to the text.2.Learning more about the killer whales and understanding the relationship between the killer whales and the whalers.3.Important words and expressions. 1.The relationship between the killer whales and the whalers.2.Develop students' reading ability. 1.Individual,pair and group work.2.Task-based teaching and learning.3.Quiz,discussion,blank-filling,retelling,debate. A computer and a projector.。

The Ocean—Our HopeAs we all know, according to most theories of evolution, all lives come from the ocean. So the ocean is the mother of all the lives.Humans should take good care of the ocean, which is not only good for the earth, but also for humans. Many people say that the 21st century is called the Ocean Century.I am deeply in favor of this point.Human society has attained great achievements since the first industrial revolution. Most of people live a good life.We are much happier now than any time in history. However, with the development of human society, human beings have done great damage to the earth. Many forests disappear from people’s sights, and more and more animals are not seen in the eyes of people.A lot of people can’t drink clean water, and can’t eat enough food.In addition, energy and some minerals become more and more expensive because of shortage and our environment becomes fragile owing to people’s overexploitation. As a result, people move their eyes to the ocean from the land. The ocean is the hope of human beings. In order to protect and make good use of our ocean,as far as I’m concerned, people should take effective measures.Firstly,we can hold all kinds of activities whose purpose is to raise people’s awareness about protecting our ocean.Teachers ought to tell students the importance of the ocean and not to throw rubbish on the beach or the surface of the ocean.Secondly, the government should make rigid laws and rules to prevent people from damaging or polluting the ocean. For example, companies and individuals who overexploit fish or discharge sewage to the ocean should be punished. At the same time, people could also make good use of the ocean. We can use waves and tides to produce electricity. There is much oil or some other energy under the ocean.Besides, marine cultivation offers people sustainable seafood and people can relax on or under the ocean. The ocean is the mother of human beings.Only if people take proper ways to protect and love her can we have a beautiful and happy future. (F)1.A lot of people have no enough clean water to drink so they have to drink the sea water.(F)2.The ocean is so important for human 人教版英语选修7同步练习unit 3 section 1 Warming Up Reading—Pre-reading(活页作业)(含解析)
For years, the giant squid(大王乌贼)had remained a modern mystery.Living in the dark depths of the ocean, the creature is difficult for scientists to observe directly. It had also managed to avoid all attempts to film it.That changed last July:for the first time ever, scientists were able to catch the giant squid on video in its natural habitat. They were amazed by what they saw.The scientists filmed the squid in the North Pacific Ocean, south of Tokyo,Japan. They followed it down to a depth of 2,952 feet. They shot more than 23 minutes of video before the squid swam off into even darker depths. The video footage will be released to the public later this month on The Discovery Channel.Tsunemi Kubodera,a zoologist at Japan’s National Museum of Nature and Science, led the team that filmed the squid. The team went into the ocean in a small submarine with lights invisible to both humans and squid.Since giant squid eat smaller squid, the scientists released a small squid as bait(诱饵).Then the scientists waited in the pitch black for the giant squid to approach. The color video shows the creature floating vertically, eating the bait squid. The giant squid is 9 to 10 feet long and is missing its two longest tentacles(触须).With those tentacles,it could have measured up to 26 feet long.It has huge black eyes the size of dinner plates.“It was shining and so beautiful,”Kubodera said.Because the deep ocean is so unfriendly to humans, little is known about the giant squid.Scientists say catching the mysterious creature on video is an important step toward understanding it.For centuries, sailors had reported seeing a huge,ocean-dwelling beast, thought to be the giant squid. The creature is also believed to be the subject of the Nordic myth of the kraken,a sea creature that supposedly attacked ships in Scandinavian waters over the past thousands of years.1.Why is it difficult to film the giant squid?A.Because it is illegal to film the giant squid.B.Because it is too expensive to make such a film.C.Because the giant squid lives in the dark deep ocean.D.Because the giant squid is dangerous to humans.

Task I
In 1902 when I was 16 I went to work with some whalers. I saw a killer whale they called Old Tom jumping out of the water and crashing into it again. A whaler told me it was telling us that a large whale was in the bay. The whalers and I ran to our boats. In the distance we saw other killer whales attacking a larger whale to stop it from escaping out to sea. The whalers killed it with a harpoon and the killer whales dragged it underwater. A whaler told me that the killer whales were feeding on its lips and tongue and that we would come back later for the rest of
the whale when it floated to the surface. The killer whales also protected the whalers. One day when a man fell out of his boat Old Tom stopped a shark from attacking him. Task II 略
