We got $6,000 each. Judge Thatcher, an important man in St. Petersburg, put it in the bank, and now we get a dollar a day interest (利息).Then a kind old lady called Douglas invited me to live with her because I haven’t got a family or a home. My mother died a long time ago, then my dad, Pap, disappeared. He was a violent (暴力的) man especially when he drank a lot, which was most of the time, and he often beat me. I was scared of him. I didn’t go to school like the other boys of my age. I lived on the streets and in the woods. My life changed after I lived with Douglas. She gave me a bed to sleep in and bought new clothes for me. She read stories to me and taught me how to eat at a table. But then her sister Miss Watson arrived. She brought her black slave (奴隶) Jim with her. I liked Jim but I didn’t like Miss Watson very much. She often shouted at me.Douglas sent me to school every day. I didn’t like going there at first because learning was very difficult. But when I could read and write a bit, I didn’t mind going. The months passed and winter came. The weather got cold. One morning I woke up and there was snow on the ground. On my way to school I saw some footprints outside Douglas’s house. There was a cross on the heel (脚后跟)of the left one. My heart jumped. Only one person wore boots with a cross on the left heel! Pap!“He’s heard about my ________” I thought. “And he wants it!”That night I went to see Jim. Jim had a magic ball made of animal hair. Instead, she just heard sparrows making noise in the bushes. “Maybe Gulliver missed the harbour.” Dad said. After breakfast, Katie took her camera to the harbour. All the colourful boats made pretty pictures, but not the one she wanted most.Katie waved to Ernest, her uncle’s neighbour, on the boathouse. The gull’s name, Gulliver, was given by him.The gull’s size and his single leg made the bird itself different. But Ernest told Katie what Gulliver did that first summer Katie and her dad came caught everyone’s attention. Young Katie lay in her stroller (婴儿车) on the floating dock (码头) when Uncle Ralph and Dad were repairing boats nearby. The waves from the passing boat made Katie’s stroller shake strongly. “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” Gulliver made the loudest cry. Dad and uncle rushed to Katie and stopped the stroller from falling into the water. They kept a close eye at Katie after that. Another summer Katie was three years old, she liked to touch everything. But Dad didn’t watch her every minute when she tried to catch small ducks around or fish from water. “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” The gull’s cry brought Dad back in time. He stopped Katie as she tried to follow the small ducks running towards water. Several summers passed, and Gulliver continued to call out as Katie tried new things. This summer Katie did the usual by-the-sea things she’d learned to do. One day, she rowed a boat out but was trapped on a rock by a storm. As she looked up and tried to catch the last warmth of the sunshine through dark clouds, she saw a single white feather. A gull feather? She searched the sky for an answer. Putting her arms around knees, she closed eyes to hold in the tears (眼泪). “Kee-aah! Kee-aah!” Katie sat up. “Katie! Katie!” Soon, Dad and Uncle Ralph appeared. “How lucky! We heard Gulliver as we came around the rocks,” Uncle Ralph said, “At least… it sounded like him. Tagore’s writing from, I felt the love life is a serious attitude of love and thinking. No doubt, the inspiration originates from life, and above life. He loves life, so also the life out of suffering and dark, light and joy is reserved. The love, is the thought of deep, but persistent. The pure love between menand women, mother and warm affection between man and nature, between delicate feelings... All humans can experience feelings, are the truth and implicit expression. Tagore especially love, he advocates sparing no effort to use a lot of great praise of metaphor and eternal love, just like he wrote: “I believe you love, let this be my last word.” His love and truth in this life properly on both ends of the scales, without any deviation.Life balance -- love and wisdom, Life balance -- love and truth. This book is difficult, but we can realize the same reason: life is love, love is the foundation of all of life!!!!!! It includes about 300 pomes .Tagore is an excellent poet and artist. During his life he wrote a lot of works, like “stray birds ‘”the crescent moon “”the gardener “”gitanjali “”fruit-gathering “”flying fire “ and so on . Most of them have the same theme: love, nature and thinking about lifePoems in “Stray birds” are not long, and some of them are just a sentence. The first time you read these pomes, just like in the early summer morning after a storm, and you open the bedroom window, you would feel a pure and peace world. Everything is so fresh and beautiful, but the meaning in the poem is so profound that you can’t stop thinking it again andagain. Day and night, streams and oceans, freedom and betrayal, have become one under Tagore’s pen. Those short sentences show a profound philosophy of life, and lead the world to explore the source of truth and wisdom.“Once we dreamt that we were strangers. We wake up to find that we were dear to each other.? “I do not remember how many times when this text had drifted into my mind there is always a somewhat inexplicable moved. Short sentence and few words, from them you can find a really comfort and warm in this boring and noisy world. From Tagore’s words, I feel his attitude to love and thinking of love. “You smiled and talked to me of nothing and I felt that for this I had been waiting long.?“It shows the deep love .Without doubt, Tagore’s inspiration comes from life, but they are higher than life.I like listen some light music when I read the” Stray birds”。

沙克尔顿的故事英语作文

沙克尔顿的故事英语作文

沙克尔顿的故事英语作文Ernest Shackleton was a renowned British explorer who led several expeditions to the Antarctic in the early 20th century. His most famous expedition, known as the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition, was an ambitious attempt to be the first to cross the Antarctic continent from one side to the other. Although the expedition ultimately failed to achieve its primary goal, Shackleton's heroic leadership and the remarkable survival of his crew in the face of unimaginable hardship have cemented his place as one of the greatest explorers in history. The expedition began in 1914 with the goal of crossing the Antarctic continent via the South Pole. Shackleton had assembled a crew of 27 men, all of whom were carefully selected for their skills and experience in polar exploration. The expedition ship, named Endurance, set sail from England in August 1914, bound for the Weddell Sea on the opposite side of the Antarctic continent from the Ross Sea, where previous expeditions had attempted to reach the South Pole. However, the journey was beset by difficulties from the very beginning. The Endurance became trapped in the dense pack ice of the Weddell Sea, unable to make any progress towards land. For months, the crew watched helplessly as their ship was slowly crushed by the relentless pressure of the ice. Finally, in October 1915, the Endurance was destroyed, and the men were forced to abandon ship and make their way across the ice floes to the nearest land, the inhospitable Elephant Island.Shackleton knew that their chances of rescue from Elephant Island were slim, as it was a remote and uninhabited location. He decided that their only hope was to sail a small open boat to the nearest inhabited island, South Georgia, over 800 miles away. Shackleton and five of his most experienced crew members set out in the 22-foot boat, the James Caird, on a perilous journey across the treacherous Southern Ocean. The voyage of the James Caird was a remarkable feat of seamanship and navigation. For 16 days, the small boat battled through gale-force winds, mountainous seas, and freezing temperatures. At times, the men were forced to bail constantly to keep the boat afloat, and they had to ration their meager supplies of food and water. Finally, on May 10, 1916, the James Caird reached the south coast of South Georgia, but the men were still not out of danger.Shackleton and two of his crew members then faced the daunting task of crossing the uncharted and glaciated interior of South Georgia to reach the whaling station on the island's north coast, where they could organize a rescue mission for the men left behind on Elephant Island. This 36-hour trek across the rugged terrain of South Georgia was an extraordinary feat of endurance and determination, as the men had to navigate treacherous glaciers and mountain passes with little more than the clothes on their backs. When Shackleton and his two companions finally reached the whaling station, they were able to immediately dispatch a rescue ship to Elephant Island. After multiple failed attempts due to treacherous weather conditions, the rescue ship finally reached Elephant Island on August 30, 1916, and was able to evacuate all 22 of the men who had been stranded there for over four months.Remarkably, despite the incredible hardships they faced, not a single member of Shackleton's expedition was lost. This was a testament to Shackleton's exceptional leadership and the resilience and teamwork of his crew. Throughout the ordeal, Shackleton remained calm and focused, inspiring his men to persevere in the face of seemingly insurmountable obstacles. The story of Shackleton's Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition has become one of the most celebrated examples of human enduranceand survival in the face of extreme adversity. Shackleton's unwavering determination to bring his entire crew home safely, even in the face of the destruction of his ship and the seemingly hopeless situation on Elephant Island, has earned him a place among the greatest explorers in history. The expedition's failure to achieve its primary goal of crossing the Antarctic continent was ultimately overshadowed by Shackleton's heroic leadership and the remarkable survival of his crew. The story of the Endurance expedition has inspired generations of adventurers and has become a symbol of the human spirit's ability to overcome even the most daunting challenges. In the end, Shackleton's greatest legacy may not be the feats of exploration he accomplished, but the enduring lessons of leadership, teamwork, and resilience that his story has imparted to the world. His unwavering commitment to the well-being of his crew, his ability to maintain morale and hope in the face of adversity, and his sheer determination to never give up have made him a true hero and an inspiration to all who strive to push the boundaries of human achievement.。

Alongside the tote bags you can find T-shirts, magnets, and buttons printed or sewn with covers of classic novels; the Web site Etsy sells tights printed with poems by Emily Dickinson. A spread in The Paris Review featured literature-inspired paint-chip colors. The merchandising of reading has a curiously undifferentiated flavor, as if what you read mattered less than that you read. In this climate of embattled bibliophilia, a new subgenre of books about books has emerged, a mix of literary criticism, autobiography, self-help, and immersion journalism: authors undertake reading stunts to prove that reading —anything —still matters.“ I thought of my adventure as Off -Road or Extreme Reading, ” Phyllis Rose writes in “ The Shelf: FrLEQ to LES, ” the latest stunt book, in which she reads through a more or less random shelf of library books. She compares her voyage, to Ernest Shac kleton ' s explorations in the Antarctic. “ Howev to sleep under a quilt withmy head on a goose down pillow, ” she writes. “ So I would read m the unknown 一into the pathless wastes, into thin air, with no reviews, no best-seller lists, no college curricula, no National Book Awards or Pulitzer Prizes, no ads, no publicity, not even word of mouth to guide me. ”She is not the first writer to set off on armchair expedition. A. J. Jacobs, a self- described “ human guinea pig, ” spent a year reading the encyclopedia for “-ItT-hAell :K Onnoew Man 's Humble Quest to Becomethe Smartest Person in the World ” (2004). Ammon Shea read all of the Oxford English Dictionary for his book “ Reading the OED: One Man, One Year, 21, 730 Pages ” (2008). In “ The Whole Five Feet ” Christopher Beha made his way through the Harvard Classics during a year in which he suffered serious illness and had a death in the family. In “ Howard' s End Is on the Landing ” (2010) limited herself to reading only the books that she already owned. Such “ extreme reading ” requires special personal traits: perseverance, stamina, a craving for self- improvement, and obstinacy.Rose fits the bill. A retired English professor, she is the author of popular biographies of Virginia Woolf and Josephine Baker, as well as “ The Year of Reading Proust ” (1997), a memoir of her family life anthe manners and mores of the Key West literary scene. Her best book is “ Parallel Lives ” ( group biography of five Victorian marriages. (It is filled with marvellous details and set pieces, like the one in which John Ruskin, reared on hairless sculptures of female nudes, defers consummating his marriage to Effie Gray for so long that she sues for divorce.) Rose is consistently generous, knowledgeable, and chatty, with a knock for connecting specific incidents to large social trends. Unlike many biblio-memoirists, she loves network television and is un- nostalgic about print; in “ The Shelf ' says that she prefers her e-reader to certain moldy paperbacks. The way most of us choose our reading today is simple. Someone posts a link, and we click on it. We set out to buy one book, and Amazon suggests that we might like another. Friends and retailers know our preferences, and urgerecommendations on us. The bookstore and the library could assist you, too —the people who work there may even know you and track your habits —but they are organized inan impersonal way. Shelves and open stacks offer not only immediate access to books but strangejuxtapositions. Arbitrary classification breeds surprises —Nikolai Gogol next to William Golding, Clarice Lispector next to Penelope Lively. The alphabet has no rationale, agenda, or preference. What can be inferred from Paragraph 1 about the author ' s opinion on reading? Why does Phyllis Rose compare her reading to Ernest Shackleton ' s explorations in the Antarctic? Which of the following is closest in meaning to underlined phrase “ human guinea pig ” in Pa Why is Rose considered a good instance to manifest “ extreme ?re ading ”In what sense is the arbitrary classification of books considered to be impersonal?A、What really matters is the fact that you read.B、An emphasis should be placed on what you read.C、The merchandising of reading can boost book sales.D、Reading as a serious undertaking should not be merchandised.A、To emphasize the adventurous and stirring experience of reading.B、To emphasize the role of reading in broadening people ' s horizon.C、To emphasize the amusement in reading without specific guidance.D、To emphasize the challenges in reading books of varying categories.A、A person used in experiments.B、An uneducated person.C、 A lazy person.D、 A vulnerable person.A、People 's interest in reading needs to be inspired.B、Most people do not know what they should read.C、She knows how to relieve her mental suffering via reading.D、She has special personal traits needed for “ extreme reading ”.A、It brings about surprises.B、It fails to track readers ' habits.C、It ignores the content of books.D、It fails to consider re ader 's preferences.试题答案:[['D'],['C'],['A'],['D'],['A']]21、If you have got kids, here is a nasty truth: they are probably not very special, that is, they are average, ordinary, and unremarkable. Consider the numbers of those applications your daughter is sending to Ivy League schools, for instance. There are more than a quarter of a million other kids aiming for the same eight colleges at the same time, and less than 9% of them will make the cut. And those hours you spend coaching Little League because you just know your son 's sweet swing will takehim to the professionals. There are 2.4 million other Little Leaguers out there, and there are exactly 750 openings for major league ballplayers at the beginning of each season. That gives him a 0.0313% chance of reaching the big clubs. The odds are just as long for the other dreams you 've hadkids: your child the billionaire, the Broadway star, the Rhodes scholar. Most of those things are never going to happen. The kids are paying the price for parents delusion's. In public schools, some students are bringinghome 17.5 hours of homework per week or 3.5 per school night and it 's hard to see how they hav to do it. From 2004 to 2014, the number of children participating in up to three hours of after-schoolactivities on any given day rose from 6.5 million to 10.2 million. And all the while, the kids are being fed a promise —that they can be tutored and coached, pushed and tested, hot- housed and advance placed until success is assured. At last, a growing chorus of educators and psychologists is saying, “Enough! ” Somewhere betwe self-esteem building of going for the gold and the self esteem crushing of the Ivy-or-die ethos there has to be a place where kids can breathe, where they can have the freedom to do what they love and where parents accustomed to pushing their children to excel can shake off the newly defined shame of having raised an ordinary child. If the system is going to be fixed, it has to start, no surprise, with the parents. For them, the problem isn ' t merely the expense of the tutors, the chore of the homework checking and the constant search for just the right summer program. It ' s also the sweat equity that comes from agonizing over every exam, grieving over every disappointing grade —becoming less a guide in a child ' s academic career than an intimate fellow traveler. The first step for parents is accepting that they have less control over their children ' s they think they do —a reality that can be both sobering and liberating. You can sign your kids up for ballet camp or violin immersion all you want, but if they ' re simply doing what they 're told doing what they love, they ' ll take it only so far.Ultimately, there ' s a much larger national conversation that needos bte had about just what higher education means and when it ' s needed at all. Four years of college has been sold as being a goldenticket in the American economy, and to an extent that ' s true.'s path ensures ntohta ot nsloym e of them will lose their way butBut pushing all kids down the bacheloralso that critical jobs that require a two-year or less —skilled trades, some kinds of nursing, computer technology, airline mechanics and more —will go unfilled. There will never be a case to be made for a culture of academic complacency or the demolition of the meritocracy. It can be fulfilling for kids to chase a ribbon, as long as it ' s a ribbon the ch And the very act of making that effort can bring out the best in anyone ' s work. But we cheat ourselves, and worse, we cheat our kids, if we view life as a single straight-line race in which one one-hundredth of the competitors finish in the money and everyone else loses. We will all be better off if we recognize that there are a great many races of varying lengths and outcomes. The challenge for parents is to help their children find the one that ' s right for them.Which of the following factors deprives the kids of freedom to do what they love? What are parents supposed to do to alter the current educational system?According to the author, which of the following perceptions should parents adopt concerning their kids education? What does the underlined word “ one” in the last paragraph refer to?A、3.5 hours of school assignments set by their teachers every day.B、The educational reforms made by the public schools they attend.C、The growing number of peers taking part in off-campus activities.D、Their parents ' unrealistic wish for them to have a promising future.A、To pay for their kids ' education.B、To take up all the household chores.C、To provide guidance to their children.D、To push their children to excel at exams.A 、They should be their kidscompanions on their journey to academic excellence.B 、They should realize the fact that most children would remain mediocre despite their wills.C 、 They should feel relieved if they don ' t have to pay for their- skicdhool art les 'sosn so.f fD 、 They should be their kids ' career director rather than help them find a right path to walk on.A 、Race.B 、Length.C 、 Challenge.D 、 Outcome.试题答案: [['D'],['C'],['B'],['A']] 22、根据题目要求完成下列任务,用中文作答。

写朋友上周末的英语作文

写朋友上周末的英语作文

Last weekend was a whirlwind of excitement and adventure, and I couldnt have experienced it without my best friend, Alex. Weve been friends since our early school days, and our bond has only grown stronger over the years. Our shared love for exploring new places and trying out different activities is what often fuels our weekend escapades. The plan for the weekend was to visit a local art exhibition that had been buzzing on social media. Alex, being an art enthusiast, was eager to see the works of some emerging artists, and I, although not as knowledgeable about art, was excited to share the experience with him.We started our day early, with the sun just beginning to peek over the horizon. The crisp morning air was invigorating, and it set the tone for the day ahead. After grabbing a quick breakfast at our favorite café, we hopped on the bus that would take us to the art gallery. The exhibition was held in a beautifully renovated warehouse, which added a unique charm to the event. As we walked through the entrance, we were greeted by a mosaic of colors and shapes that adorned the walls. The atmosphere was electric, with people of all ages discussing the artwork, their voices creating a symphony of appreciation and critique.Alex was in his element, his eyes lighting up as he studied each piece with a keen interest. I followed his lead, trying to understand the stories behind the paintings and sculptures. He would often pause to explain the techniques used by the artists or the cultural significance of certain themes. It was fascinating to see the world through his eyes, and I found myselfdeveloping a newfound appreciation for art.One particular piece caught our attention a large abstract painting that seemed to dance with vibrant hues. Alex explained how the artist had used a combination of bold strokes and delicate shading to create a sense of movement and depth. I was mesmerized by the way the colors seemed to flow into one another, creating a visual narrative that was both chaotic and harmonious. After a few hours of immersing ourselves in the world of art, we decided to take a break and grab some lunch. We found a quaint little bistro nearby, where we enjoyed a delicious meal and shared stories about our favorite pieces from the exhibition. The afternoon was dedicated to a more active pursuit hiking in a nearby nature reserve. The reserve was a lush expanse of greenery, teeming with wildlife and dotted with tranquil lakes. The hike was challenging but rewarding, offering breathtaking views of the surrounding landscape. As we trekked along the winding trails, we talked about our future plans and dreams. It was a heartening conversation, filled with laughter and the occasional moment of introspection. The physical exertion of the hike seemed to clear our minds, allowing us to think more clearly about our aspirations.By the time we reached the summit, the sun was beginning to set, casting a golden glow over the landscape. We sat on a rocky outcrop, watching asthe sky transformed into a canvas of pinks and oranges. It was a moment of profound beauty, and we were grateful to have shared it with each other. As the day drew to a close, we made our way back to the city, our bodies tired but our spirits high. The weekend had been a perfect blend of culture, adventure, and companionship a testament to the power of friendship and shared experiences. This past weekend with Alex was more than just a series of events it was a reminder of the importance of nurturing our friendships and making time for the people who matter most in our lives. It was a celebration of our shared interests and a chance to create memories that we will cherish for years to come.。

埃德加斯诺英文作文

埃德加斯诺英文作文

埃德加斯诺英文作文英文:Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most famous American writers, known for his dark and mysterious stories. He is often credited with inventing the detective fiction genre and his poem "The Raven" is a classic of American literature. As for me, I have mixed feelings about Poe's work. On one hand, I appreciate his skillful use of language and his ability to create a mood of suspense and terror. On the other hand, I find some of his stories to be overly melodramatic and his characters to be one-dimensional.For example, in "The Tell-Tale Heart," the narrator's descent into madness is vividly depicted, but his motives for killing the old man are never fully explained. Similarly, in "The Pit and the Pendulum," the protagonist's ordeal in the torture chamber is harrowing, but he remainsa passive figure throughout the story.Overall, I think Poe's contributions to American literature are significant and his influence can still be felt today. However, his work is not without its flaws and limitations.中文:埃德加·爱伦·坡是美国最著名的作家之一,以他黑暗神秘的故事而闻名。

One of myfavorite authors is Agatha Christie, who is renowned forher cleverly crafted mysteries and unforgettable characters. In her novel "Murder on the Orient Express," Christie presents readers with a seemingly impossible puzzle: how could someone have committed a murder in a locked train car with no visible signs of entry or exit? As the story unfolds, the detective Hercule Poirot uses his sharp mind and keen observation skills to gather clues and piece together the truth. What I love about this novel is the way it keeps me engaged and guessing until the very end. Christie's writing is both suspenseful and witty, and her characters are sowell-developed that I feel like I know them personally. I also appreciate the way she incorporates social commentary into her stories, highlighting issues such as class and race relations.Another author I enjoy is Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, whose Sherlock Holmes stories are classics of the genre. In "The Hound of the Baskervilles," Holmes and his sidekick Watson investigate a mysterious death on the moors, and their investigation leads them to a sinister family curse and a terrifying creature that stalks the night.Doyle's writing is full of vivid descriptions and memorable quotes, such as Holmes' famous line, "Once you eliminate the impossible, whatever remains, no matter how improbable, must be the truth." I also appreciate the way he portrays Holmes as a flawed but brilliant detective, whose methods sometimes border on the eccentric.Overall, I believe that the best detective novels are those that keep readers engaged and guessing, while also providing social commentary and memorable characters.Whether it's Christie's intricate plots or Doyle's vivid descriptions, these authors have left a lasting impact on the genre and on me as a reader.中文:作为侦探小说的粉丝,我一直被推理的艺术和错综复杂的情节所吸引,这些情节让我一直猜测到最后。

the worst thing about阅读理解

the worst thing about阅读理解

The worst thing about television and radio is that they entertain us, saving us the trouble of entertaining ourselves. A hundred years ago, before all these devices were invented, if a person wanted to entertain himself with a song or a piece of music, he would have to do the singing himself or pick up a violin and play it. Now, all he has to do is turn on the radio or TV. As a result, singing and music have declined. Italians used to sing all the time. Now, they only do it in Hollywood movies. Indian movies are mostly a series of songs and dances trapped around silly stories. As a result, they don’’t do much singing in Indian villages anymore. Indeed, ever since radio first came to life, there has been a terrible decline in amateur (业余的) singing throughout the world. There are two reasons for this sad decline. One, human beings are astonishingly lazy. Put a lift in a building, and people would rather take it than climb even two flights of steps. Similarly, invent a machine that sings, and people would rather let the machine sing than sing themselves. The other reason is that people are easily embarrassed. When there is a famous, talented musician readily available by pushing a button, which amateur violinist or pianist would want to try to entertain family or friends by himself These earnest reflections came to me recently when two CDs arrived in the mail. They are historic recordings of famous writers reading their own works. It was thrilling to hear the voices from a long dead past in the late 19th century. But today, reading out loud anything—1—is no longer common. Today, we sing songs to our children until they are about two, we read simple books to them till they are about five, and once they have learnt to read themselves, we become deaf. We’’re alive only to the sound of the TV and the stereo (立体声音响). I count myself extremely lucky to havebeen born before TV became so common. I was about six before TV appeared. To keep us entertained my mother had to do a good deal of singing and tell us endless tales. It was the same in many other homes. People spoke a language; they sang it, they recited it; it was something they could feel. Professional actors’’ performance is extraordinarily revealing. But I still prefer my own reading, because it’’s mine. For the same reason, people find karaoke (卡拉OK)liberating. It is almost the only electronic thing that gives them back their own voice. Even if their voices are hopelessly out of tune, at least it is meaningful self-entertainment.The main idea of this passage is that______. A.TV and radio can amuse us with beautiful songs and musicB.TV and radio prevent us from self-entertainmentC.people should sing songs and read books aloud themselvesD.parents should sing songs and read books aloud to their children 答案解析B本题是一道主旨题。

名著英文作文初三英文:As a reader, I have always been fascinated by classic literature. The depth of characters, the intricacy of plot, and the richness of language found in these works have captivated me since I was young. One of my favorite classic novels is Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte. The story of Jane Eyre is one of growth, independence, and love. Jane, an orphan, is raised by her cruel aunt and sent to a harsh boarding school. Despite the difficulties she faces, Jane remains strong and determined, eventually becoming a governess at Thornfield Hall. There, she falls in love with her employer, Mr. Rochester, but their happiness is threatened by a dark secret hidden within the walls of the mansion. What I love about Jane Eyre is the way Bronte portrays Jane as a strong, independent woman who refuses to letothers dictate her life. She is not afraid to speak her mind and stand up for herself, even in the face of adversity. This is a message that I think is still relevant today, especially for young women.中文:作为一名读者,我一直被经典文学所吸引。

I grew up on stories about Ernest Shackleton and all the great polar explorers.I had a really strong mental picture of what the environment they experienced might be like. Those tales of exploration are the reason why I got into travel photography in the first place.

I had wanted to go to Spitsbergen for years. I was actually booked on a trip with my wife, but we had to cancel ------ for the nicest possible reason that she fell pregnant with our first child. A couple of years later, I got the opportunity to shoot a story on the Noorderlicht, a ship that gets frozen into the ice every year ------ just as the boats of the
old explorers did when they wintered in the Arctic. The experience was great because I love riding snowmobiles and dog sleds.

It was an eight-hour snowmobile journey from the capital Longyearbyen to the ship. We rode through snowstorms and it was one of the hardest things I've ever done. It was really quite dark and we were sliding about on ice during the last part of the journey. I began to think: "This had better be worth it."

And then I saw the ship, lit by moonlight. It looked so strange and frighting, sitting on its own in the middle of nowhere. I almost didn't want to get close to it because it was so perfect in its environment. It was exactly how I had imagined it to be. Travel experiences are rarely like that ------ there's usually some disappointment involved somewhere. When you have held a mental picture of a place since your childhood and you see that it exists in reality, it really is a dream that come true.
