If your knowledge is similar to that of food shoppers who answered three surveys for the U. S. Food and Drug Administration, then you probably share some wide-spread misinformation about nutrition. Check your answers to the following statements. Is it true or false?Statement 1: Fresh vegetables cooked at home are always more nutritious than canned or frozen vegetables. False. The nutritional difference depends more on how vegetables are handled or prepared than in whether they are bought fresh or packaged. Overcooking, for example, destroys many nutrients. Vegetables cooked in too much water can lose a significant amount of vitamins.Statement 2: When dieting, avoid starchy (淀粉类) foods, such as bread or potatoes. False. If you cut out starchy foods, such as peas, potatoes, bread, and rice, you cut out very good sources of several B vitamins, Vitamin C, and other nutrients. Moreover, ounce for ounce, bread and potatoes have fewer calories than sirloin steak and roast beef.Statement 3: Taking extra vitamins beyond the recommended daily allowances won’t give you more energy. True. It’s widely believed that extra vitamins provide more energy. But taking more than the body needs doesn’t make it function better, just as overfilling your gas tank doesn’t make your car run faster. If you answered these questions correctly, you can for the time being consider yourself well informed about food and nutrition by today’s standards. But remember that nutrition is a complex and growing science and that today’s beliefs may be changed as new information becomes available.11.The first paragraph implies that many people .A.are well informed about nutritionB.don’t care about nutritionC.have much knowledge of nutritionD.have incorrect ideas about nutrition12.According to paragraph 2, which is NOT true about nutrition?A.Overcooking destroys many nutrients.B.It makes no difference how you prepare vegetables.C.Both fresh and packaged vegetables are nutritious.D.Vitamins in vegetable could be lost during cooking.13.Which is a correct attitude towards starchy food?A.Starchy foods are unnecessary in a balanced diet.B.Bread and steak have the same amount of calories per ounce.C.Valuable nutrients could be found in starchy foods.D.Starchy foods include only peas, potatoes, bread and rice.14.The description of “overfilling your gas tank” shows why .A.one should take as much vitamins as possibleB.more than enough vitamins is unnecessaryC.vitamins cost as much as gasD.doctors recommend allowance of vitamins15.A good title for this article would be .A.Tips of Losing Weight EffectivelyB.Test Your Nutrition IQC.Nutrition: A Complex Branch of ScienceD.Misleading Nutrition ConceptsQuestions 16-20 are based on the following passagePassage 2The Queen has only given one interview while a sovereign (君主). Her true personality remains elusive to the public. However, one thing is clear: Queen Elizabeth is an introvert. Introverts prefer quiet environments and feel energized from spending time alone or with people they know well. They aren’t necessarily shy, but they do tend to be more reserved and guarded with strangers. Fellow introverts will appreciate how draining an average day for Her Majesty must be.Fortunately, the Queen has some tricks to make public engagements easier. Just like us commoners rely on friends to save us from awkward situations or boring conversations, she subtly signals to her staff when she wants an intervention. If she places her handbag on the table, it indicates that she wants the event to end in the next five minutes. For more urgent situations, putting her bag on the floor shows that she wants her lady-in-waiting to rescue her immediately. Most comfortable in the countryside, the Queen has a well-known passion for horses and dogs. There is a scene in the hit Netflix show The Crown which reveals a fascinating side of the monarch. While giving JackieKennedy a personal tour of Buckingham Palace, the two women find themselves bonding over their respective positions as introverted women who have found themselves i n the limelight. Surrounded by the Queen’s beloved corgis, both women admit they are the happiest around animals and that their extroverted sisters would have been much better suited to their public roles.16.The underlined word “draining” (paragraph 1) is th e closest in meaning to “”.A.frustratingB. exhaustingC. demandingD. aspiring17.To be rescued immediately in a public engagement, the Queen would .A.end the event within five minutesB. place her handbag on the tableC. wave to her lady-in-waitingD. put her bag on the floor18.In the last paragraph, the underlined expression “the two women find themselves bonding over their respective positions” means that the two ladies .A.admire each otherB. help each other in publicC. grow closer to each otherD. show respect for each other19.Queen Elizabeth and Jackie Kennedy share the following traits or facts EXCEPT that .A.both have sistersB. both love animalsC. both enjoy being in publicD. both are introverted women20.The author’s attitude can be described as .A.neutralB. criticalC. pessimisticD. subjectiveSection B (20 points)Directions: In this section there is a passage with ten blanks.

(3’* 20 =60’)Directions: There are four passages in this section. Each section is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C, and D.You should decide on the best choice and write your answer on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1It remains to be seen whether the reserves of raw materials would be sufficient to supply a world economy which would have grown by 500 per cent. Southeast Asia alone would have an energy consumption five times greater than that of Western Europe in 1970. Incidentally, if the underdeveloped countries started using up pet petrol at the same rate as the industrialized areas, then world reserves would already be exhausted by 1985.All this only goes to show just how important it is to set up a plan to conserve and divide up fairly natural resources on a world-wide scale. This is a matter of life and death because world population is exploding at an incredible rate.By the middle of the next century population will expand every year by as much as it did in the first 1500 years after Christ. In the southern, poor part of the globe, the figures are enough to make your hair stand on end.Even supposing that steps are taken to stabilize world population in the next fifty years, the number of inhabitants per square kilometer will increase by from 4 in the United States to 140 in Southeast Asia. What can we do about it?In the first hypothesis we do nothing.By the year 2000, the southern parts of the world would then have a population greater than the total world population today. Calcutta would have 60 million inhabitants. It is unthinkable.Alternatively, we could start acting tight now to bring births under control within fifteen years ago so that population levels off.Even then the population in the southern areas would not stop growing for seventy-five years.71.By the year 2000 the world economy will have grown by ______.A.500 per centB.100 per centC.four timesD.an unknown amount72.World petrol reserves will be used up by 1985 if ______.A.Western European consumption continues to expandB.Southeast Asia does not limit its consumptionC.underdeveloped countries start to use petrol at the same rate as Western EuropeD.World population continues to expand73.If we took effective measures right now, the world’s population _________.A.could stabilize in thirty-five years’ timeB.would not stop growing for seventy-five yearsC.would stop growing in about fifteen years’ time from nowD.could stabilize in about seventy-five years’ time74.The author suggests in the passage that _________.A.world petrol supplies will have been exhausted by 1985B.we need to use natural resources carefully and divide them up equallyC.to slow down the economic growth in developed countries might be a best policyD.raw materials will not be enough for the world economy in 200075.The purpose of the author in writing this passage is to _________.A.urge people to start taking action right awayB.tell people about the astounding rate of population growthC.describe the problems the world will be faced withD.give an account of the relationship between population growth and industryPassage 2Why do some new products succeed, bringing millions of dollars to innovative companies, while others fail, with great losses? The answer is not simple, and certainly we cannot say that “good” products succeed while “bad” products fail. Many products that function well and seem to meet consumer needs have fallen by the wayside.Sometimes, virtually identical products exist in the market at the same time with one emerging as profitable while the other fails.McNeal Laboratories’ Tylenol has become successful as an aspirin substitute, yet Bristol-Meyers entered the test market at about the same time with Neotrend, also a substitute for aspirin, which quickly failed. The nature of the product is a factor in its success or failure, but the important point is the consumer’s perception of the products need-satisfying capability. Any new product conception should be aimed at meeting a customer need, and the introductory promotion should seek to communicate that need satisfying quality and motivate the customer to try the product. Often, attitude change is involved, and, in the extreme, changes in life-style may be sought. Here the company walks a tightrope.A new product is more likely to be successful if it represents a truly novel way of solving a customer problem, but this very newness, if carried too far, may asked the customer to learn new behavior patterns. The customer will make the change if the perceived benefit is sufficient, but inertia is strong and consumers will often not go to the effort that is required.During the late sixties and early seventies Bristol-Meyers met with new product failures that exemplify both of these problems. In 1967 and 1968 the company entered the market with a $5 million advertising campaign for Fact toothpaste, and an $11 million campaign to promote Resolve. Both products failed quickly, not because they didn’t work or because there was no consumer need, but apparently because consumers just could see no reason to shift from an already satisfactory product to a different one that promised no new benefit.76.The first sentence of first paragraph is a question, to which, the answer is _______.A.that the good products succeed while the bad failB.that the “good” are not really good but the “bad” are actually badC.that new products will succeed if they function well and fail if they don’tD.not given in the paragraph77.What are Tylenol and Neotrend?A.They are names of two drug manufacturers.B.They are probably two brands of medicine which serve as a substitute for aspirin.C.Tylenol is a drug manufacturer whereas Neotrend is a new substitute medicine for aspirin.D.They are probably the names of two laboratories.78.The success or failure of a product seems to be determined by a number of factors, one of which, the author emphasizes, is the consumer’s perception of the product’s _______.A.quality and priceB.usefulness and durabilityC.need-satisfying capabilityD.appearance and inner packing79.What does the author mean when he says “the company walks a tightrope” (see sentence 1, paragraph 3)?A.The company has both the chance to succeed and to fail in dealing in a new product.B.The company has to study the customer’s behavior before a new product is introduced.C.The company has to find a new way to solve customer’s problems before a new product is put on the market.D.The company has to make a great effort to overcome the customer’s intertia.80.Bristol-Meyers failed in promoting Fact toothpaste and Resolve because _____.A.these products were too expensive as compared with their direct competitorsB.both products failed to meet the customers’ needC.the customers could see no sense of a radica1 change of their habitsD.the company forgot an English saying: “You cannot teach an old dog new tricks”Passage 3The more women and minorities make their way into the ranks of management, the more they seem to want to talk about things formerly judged to be best left unsaid. The newcomers also tend to see office matters with a fresh eye, in the process sometimes coming up with critical analyses of the forces that shape everyone’s experience in the organization.Consider the novel views of Harvey Coleman of Atlanta on the subject of getting ahead.Coleman is black. He spent 11 years with IBM, half of them working in management development, and now serves as a consultant to the likes of AT&T, Coca-Cola, Prudential, and Merch.Coleman says that based on what he’s seen at big companies, he weighs the different elements that make for long-term career success as follows: performance counts a mere 10%; image, 30%; and exposure, a full 60%.Coleman concludes that excellent job performance is so common these days that while doing your work well may win you pay increases, it won’t secure you the big promotion. He finds that advancement more often depends on how many people know you and your work, and how high up they are.Ridiculous beliefs? Not to many people, especially many women and members of minority races who, like Coleman, feel that he scales have dropped from their eyes. “Women and blacks in organizations work under false beliefs,” says Kaleel Jamison, a New York-based management consultant who helps corporations deal with these issues. “They think that if you work hard, you’ll get ahead – that someone in authority will reach down and give you a promotion.” She adds, “Most women and blacks are so frightened that people think they’ve gotten ahead because of their sex or color that they play down their visibility.” Her advice to those folks: learn the ways thatwhite males have traditionally used to find their way into the spotlight.81.According to the passage, “things formerly judged to be best left unsaid” (Lined 3, Pare.1)probably refers to “______”.A.criticisms that shape everyone’s experienceB.the opinion which contradict the established beliefsC.the tendencies that help the newcomers to see office matters with a fresh eyeD.the ideas which usually come up with new ways of management in the organization82.To achieve success in your career, the most important factor, according to the passage, is to _____.A.let your superiors know how good you areB.project a favorable image to the people around youC.work as a consultant to your superiorsD.perform well your tasks given by your superiors83.The reason why women and blacks play down their visibility is that they ______.A.know that someone in authority will reach down and give them a promotionB.want to give people the impression that they work under false beliefsC.don’t want people to think that their promotions were due to sex or colorD.believe they can get promoted by reason of their sex or color84.The author is of the opinion that Coleman’s beliefs are ________.A.biasedB.popularC.insightfulD.superficial85.The best title for this passage would be ________.A.Role of Women and Minorities in ManagementB.The Importance of Being VisibleC.Job Performance and AdvancementD.Sex and Career SuccessPassage 4Geologists have been studying volcanoes for a long time.Though they have learned a great deal, they still have not discovered the causes of volcanic action, they know that the inside of earth is very hot, but they are not sure exactly what causes the great heat. Some geologists have thought that the heat is caused by the great pressure of the earth’s outer layers. Or the heat may be left from the time when the earth was formed.During the last sixty years scientists have learned about radium, thorium, and other radioactive elements. These give out the heat all the time as they change into other elements. Many scientists now believe that much of the heat inside the earth is produced by radioactive elements.Whatever the cause of the heat may be, we do know that the earth getter hotter the farther down we dig.In deep mines and oil wells the temperature rises about IF. for each 50 feet. At this rate the temperature 40 miles below the earth’s surface would be over 4000 F. This is much hotter necessary to melt rock. However, the pressure of the rock above keeps most materials from melting at their usual melting points. Geologists believe that the rock deep in the earth may be plastic, or puttylike. In other words, the rock yields slowly to pressure but is not liquid. But if some changes in the earth’s crust releases the pressure, the rock melts. Then the hot, liquid rock can move up toward the surface. When the melted rock works its way close to the earth’s crust, a volcano may be formed. The melted rock often contains steam and other gases under great pressure. If the rock above gives way, the pressure is released. Then the sudden expansion of the gases causes explosions. These blow the melted rock into pieces of different sizes and shoot them high in the air. Here they cool and harden into volcanic ash and cinders. Some ofthis materials falls around the hole made in the earth’s surface. The melted rock may keep on rising and pour out as lava.In this way, volcanic ash, cinders, and lava build up the cone-shaped mountains t that we call volcanoes.86.This passage mainly deals with the ______.A.A. causes of volcanic actionB.formation of volcanoesC.results of volcanic actionD.work of geologists87.The cause for the heat in interior of the earth is _____.A.radioactive elementsB.the great pressure of the earthC.not mentioned in the passageD.the heat remaining from the formation of the earth88.From the information given in the passage, most minerals would melt ____.A.A. at 400 F, 5000 feet above sea levelB.at 400F, 5000 feet below sea levelC.at 4000F, at sea levelD.with the pressure of the rock above89.From the passage we know that “thorium”(para.1)may be _____.A.volcanoB.radioactive elementC.the earth’s out layerD.heat inside the earth90.The main idea of the last paragraph is _____.A.what causes explosionsB.cause of volcanoesC.formation of volcanoes at earth’s surfaceD.melted rockPartⅤTranslation. Situational DialogucsReading ComprehensionIf someone is sleepwalking, they are walking around while they are asleep. Sleepwalking happens when a person is not fully asleep but not quite awake. Usually we move from our deepest level of sleep to a lighter level and stay there. Sleepwalkers come right up to wake levels but do not fully awaken. It is at this time that they get up and walk. The longer a person stays in deep sleep, the more time it takes for the sleep to be broken. That opens up the possibility of being awakened (but not fully) and of sleepwalking. Sleepwalking happens more often among young people than grown-ups because young people usually have more deep sleep. Up to 7% of 5- to 12-year-olds sleepwalk, while only about 2% of grown-ups sleepwalk. We get less deep sleep as we are getting older and the possibility of sleepwalking is also reduced. Sleepwalking may run in families, too. If one of your parents was a sleepwalker, you have about a 50% possibility of also being a sleepwalker.1.This passage is about______.A.why sleepwalking happensB.where sleepwalkers goC.what sleepwalkers doD.when sleepwalkers walk正确答案:A解析:通读全文可知,文章主要介绍了梦游症的产生原因、高发年龄段和遗传概率等,所以A项最符合题意。

Some people take it for granted that lucky numbers have nothing to do with their luck. In their opinions, lucky numbers themselves are given certain meaning for the purpose of application of mathematics. Besides, all the numbers are equal, and they never decide your fate and affect your luck. However, others hold that lucky numbers really bring good luck to them. They maintain that some superstars and famous persons have their own lucky numbers to bless themselves. And lucky numbers make them feel peaceful or energetic and hence they can tackle problems better. Weighing up these two arguments, I am for the former one. For one thing, if lucky numbers really worked, we were not to fail anything. For another, lucky numbers can never change the objective reality and make miracles. For instance, patients are cured by experienced doctors but not by lucky numbers. Therefore, as stated above, we should work hard instead of depending on lucky numbers to bring us a happy life.解析:本题属于命题作文。

Hence producers who know they will be paid in money, can concentrate on finding the most suitable outlet for their goods, while buyers who will pay in money, can concentrate on finding cheapest market for the things they wish to purchase. Specialization, which is vital to an advanced economy, is encouraged, because people whose output is not a complete product but only a part of one in which many others are involved can be paid an amount equivalent to their share ofthe product.Another advantage of money is that it is a measure of value, that is, it serves as a unit in terms of which the relative values of different products can be expressed. In a barter economy it would be necessary to determine how many plates were worth one hundred weight of cotton, or how many pens should be exchanged for a ton of coal, which would be a difficult and time-consuming task. The process of establishing relative values would have to be undertaken for every act of exchange, according to what products were being offered against one another, and according to the two parties'desires and preferences. If I am trying to barter bananas for fish, for example, a lot would depend on whether the person is willing to barter fish for bananas; for example, a lot would depend on whether the person willing to exchange bananas is or not keen on fish.Thirdly, money acts as a store of wealth. It is difficult to imagine saving under a barter system. No one engaged on only one stage in the manufacture of a person could save part of his output, since he would be producing nothing complete. Even when a person actually produced a complete product the difficulties would be overwhelming. Most products deteriorate fairly rapidly, either physically or in value, as a result of long storage; even if storage were possible, the practice of storing products for years on end would involve obvious disadvantages—imagine a coal-miner attempting to save enough coal, which of course is his product, to keep him for life. If wealth could not be saved, or only with great difficulty, future needs could not be provided for, or capital accumulated to raise productivityUsing money as a medium of exchange means that()A.you have to sell something in order to buy somethingB.you have to buy something in order to sell somethingC.you don't have to buy something in order to sell somethingD.the seller and the purchaser are the same person35.A.GB.HC.ID.J36.According to the instructions, which of the following is TRUE()A.The gasket should be cleaned thoroughly with cold waterd detergent and hot water can best clean the cookerC.Soapy water will often damage the cookerD.Sand can be used to clean the cooker37.Counterfeit medications are a widespread problem in developing countries. Like other counterfeits, they look like real products. But counterfeit drugs may contain too much, too little or none of the active ingredients of the real thing.People do not get the medicine they need. And in some cases the counterfeits cause death. Twenty children in Bangladesh died last year after being given acetaminophen(醋氨酚). The medications contained ingredients that looked, smelt and tasted like the real thing. The medicine was produced by a local drug company that used a dangerous substitute to save money. The problem of counterfeit medications is especially serious in Africa, Asia and Latin America. The WHO estimates that up to thirty percent of the medicine on sale in many of those countries is counterfeits. The problem is less widespread among industrialized countries. The WHO says counterfeits make up less than one percent of the illegal drug market in countries like the United States, Canada, Japan, and New Zealand. But the agency also says as much as fifty percent of the medicine sold on the Internet is counterfeit. Much is being done to fight counterfeit drugs. Several companies are developing ways to make counterfeits easier to identify. And there are existing methods, like a machine that can quickly identify chemicals in pills to confirm if the pills are real. Other ideas include things like special tracking codes for drug packages. People could send a text message with the code and get a message back, which proves that what they bought is listed in a database. Some drug makers and other companies put three-dimensional images called holograms(全息图)on their products as a security deviceLast year twenty children in Bangladesh died because of()A.unclean waterB.acetaminophenC.fake drugsD.online medicine38.What can you do if you've noticed some of the signs of stress mentioned in the passage()A.See a doctor and try to relax moreB.Change to another jobC.Assume much fewer responsibilitiesD.Let it be六、作文(1题)39.1.目前,越来越多的大学生做兼职。

The group Yincang is one of the pioneers of Chinese rap. It is made up of music lovers from both sides of the Pacific Ocean: a Beijinger, a Chinese -Canadian and two Americans. “ The big change was when rappers started writing lyrics in Chinese, so people could understand, “said Zhong Cheng, 27, a member of the group who was raised in Canada but born in Beijing, where he returned in 1997. “ Before that, kids listened to hip - hop in English but maybe less than 1 percent could actually understand it. “Yincang’s first hit song was In Beijing. It sets a melody played on the Chinese traditional music instrument erhu against a hip - hop beat. The song is an insider’s look at Beijing’s sights and sounds, such as traditional Siheyuan courtyard complexes, the bar area in Houhai, the Guijie food street and the clothes market near the zoo. However, making Chinese hip - hop is still relatively profitless. Members of Yincang still struggle to pay the bills after seven years together. Besides the web camera system with your puter, we have a new high-tech way to solve the problem and ease your pain of missing them. The Japanese pany biwith created a system “talking picture”. It makes people in pictures speak! The “talking picture” has a special pen. It is actually a pen-shaped scanner. It can scan information in specially-made pictures. A connected player will then play the information out loud. First, you need to take a picture and record what you want to say with the pany. The pany will then make special barcodes (条形码) ontoyour picture (you can’t see those codes). Those codes are your voice and your words. When you hold up the pen to scan your picture with barcodes, a player connected to the pen will start to play. It plays things you’ve recorded. That way the invention makes the “you” in the picture speak! Do you want your friends and families talking out of pictures? Have them make pictures like that, and you can hear them whenever you want to, only with “talking picture” system. The system can play messages for up to 12 minutes. “The pictures would be useful for those who hope to hear the voice of someone living far away,” said Mayumi Fuji, a spokeswoman for the pany. “Grandparents, for example, longing to know about their grandchildren would be happy to hear their voices when they see the picture,” Fuji said. But it is troublesome to go to the pany for taking a special picture first. And it is much more expensive than using a telephone. The photo with barcodes costs between 17,040 and 17,990 yen (日元) (160 and 169 dollars ). The larger picture you want, the more you pay. Now, just raise a finger, lonely people can have their loved ones speak out of pictures. But,whether the “talking picture” is practical or not, let’s wait and see.1.What does a “talking picture” mean according to this passage? A.The picture can play what’s been recorded as if the person in the picture “talks”.B.You can have a talk with the person in the picture whenever you want to.C.The picture can tell you wonderful stories to ease your pain. It’s a conclusion difficult to ignore when you look at what’s happening in France, a country with a historically poor record of road safety. There were 16,617 road deaths in 1972 in France for example, but that dropped to 8412 by 1995 following rules such as pulsory seat belt wearing in 1990 and a lowering of the blood alcohol limit to 0.05 in 1995. Last year, the road deaths dropped below 5,000 for the first time, or 4.9 per cent less than 2004. paring road deaths to population in 2005, that’s about 817 per million people pared with Australia’s 806.And guess what? Last year the number of speed cameras on French roads reached 1,000 and the government plans to double that within the next three years.Okay, you know the arguments regarding increased traffic safety and cameras-for-ine, but it seems in France there’s been a major cultural change brought on by radars and other laws. A three-hour, wine-soaked lunchwith a quick rush back to the office is no longer on.Travelling on the highways, it is rare to see anyone breaking the 130km/h speed limit when once few traveled below it. The speed cameras are clearly signed so drivers know when they are ing. There’s even an official web site listing fixed and mobile camera locations and it is updated regularly.Maybe it is because of such transparency by government, rather than the concealment too often used by authorities in many other countries that more French can enjoy la joi devivre thanks to speed cameras. 1.Generally, it seems to most people that speed cameras are used to.
