My parents have taught me a lot about fire safety since I was little, and I want to share what I've learned with you. Staying safe in a fire could literally save your life!The very first thing you need to know is to get out of the building as quickly as possible if there's a fire. Don't try to gather belongings or pets - just get yourself out right away. The smoke from fires can make it really hard to see and breathe, so you have to act fast.But before you even open a door, you need to feel it with the back of your hand to see if it's hot. If the door is hot, don't open it! The fire could be right on the other side. Instead, you'll want to stuff blankets or clothes in the crack at the bottom of the door to keep smoke out. Then open a window and wave a bright cloth or flashlight to signal for help.If the door isn't hot, brace your hip against it and open it slowly to check for smoke or fire. If there's too much smoke, you'll need to find another way out. But if it seems clear, get lowto the floor and crawl quickly to the exit while staying under the smoke. Cover your mouth and nose with a damp cloth if you can.Once you're out of the building, move away from it and call 911 from a safe place to report the fire. Never go back inside a burning building for any reason - it's way too dangerous. The firefighters have the gear and training to go in safely.Another thing my parents taught me is to have a family meeting place set up in advance. That way if you all have to evacuate and get separated, there's a spot outside where you can meet up. Make sure the place is a safe distance from your home in case of fire.We also practiced getting out of our house by setting up a home fire drill. We planned two ways out of every room in case one exit is blocked. Going through those motions really helped me understand how to calmly but quickly evacuate. Setting up your own drill at home is a great way to prepare.Of course, you want to try to prevent fires from ever starting in the first place! Never leave lit candles or cooking food unattended. Space heaters need at least 3 feet of clear space around them. Don't overload electrical outlets with too many plugs. And you should definitely never play with matches, lighters or fireworks.Smoke alarms are your first line of defense too. You need working smoke alarms on every level of your home, and in or near all sleeping areas. My parents test ours once a month and change the batteries twice a year. I'm getting used to the sounds they make so I can recognize them during an emergency.If your clothes ever do catch fire somehow, you have to remember to stop, drop and roll. Don't run around, because that will just make the flames spread. Instead, hit the ground right away and roll over and over to smother the fire. Cover your face with your hands too while rolling.In case of a fire, it's also good to have an emergency supply kit prepared. Stock it with things like bottled water,non-perishable food, a first aid kit, flashlight with extra batteries, radio, blankets, and other basic supplies. You may need to grab that kit on your way out. Having it ready ahead of time means you don't waste precious time packing during an actual fire.Firefighters are heroes who risk their lives to rescue people and put out fires. To help them out, make sure your house number is clearly visible from the street so they can quickly find your home. Also learn about two ways out of every room and go over exit routes together as a family regularly.I know all this fire safety stuff might seem like a lot, but it could literally save your life someday. The most important things are to get out fast when you hear a smoke alarm, stay low under smoke, call 911 from outside, and never ever go back inside a burning building.
