Part I Reading Comprehension (24 points)Directions:There are 3 passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A), B), C) and D). You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Questions 1 to 4 are based on the following passage. It was an early September day, cool and bright and just right for running, and I was in the first few miles of a lO-knownmile race over a course with a few high hills. Still, I felt energetic; despite the hills it was going to be a fine run.Just ahead of me was Peggy Mimno, a teacher from Mount Kiseo, New York. She too was running easily, moving along at my speed. The pace felt comfortable, so I decided to stay where I was; why pay attention to pace when she was setting such a nice one? I'd overtake(追上) her later on when she tired. So I ran behind her. The course headed north for miles, wandered west for a hilly mile, then turned south again along a winding road. The race was getting harder. We had four miles left and already it was beginning to be real work.Peggy overtook a young runner. She seemed to know him, for they exchanged a few cheerful words as she passed him. Their exchange worried me. You don't chat during a race unless you feeling good, and Peggy plainly was.Still, I was close enough to overtake her if she tired, so I didn't give up hope completely. We were getting nearer to a long, punishing hill now and it would be the test. We were a mile from the finish line, so whatever happened on the hill would almost determine who crossed it first. As I moved up the hill, my attention wandered for a few minutes. When I looked up, Peggy was moving away--first five yards, then ten, then more. Finally it was clear that there was no help of catching her. She beat me soundly. There is an important lesson in that race. Women are thought to be weaker, slower and not nearly as skilled in sport. Yet as Peggy Mimno so clearly showed, the similarities between men and women runners are more important than differences. I have run with a number of women, andI can say it is often hard work.1. What did the writer think of the race in the beginning?A. It would be hard work.B. It would be an easy race.C. It would be a test of his strength.D. It would be a good learning experience.2. What worried the writer when Peggy greeted the young runner?A. Peggy overtook the young runner.B. Peggy was running energetically.C. Peggy was laughing as the writer.D. Peggy paid no attention to the writer.3. By saying "a long, punishing hill" (paragraph 5 ), the writer implies that _____________ .A. Peggy would fail to reach the hilltopB. men are more skilled at climbing hillsC. overtaking Peggy would be easyD. climbing the hill would be a demanding task4. What lesson does the writer learn from the race?A. Women are as good as men in sport.B. Women are better at climbing hills.C. He should have more training in a cross-country race.D. He should set a quicker pace at the beginning of a race.Questions 5 to 8 are based on the following passage.Though war is something people hate, Director Feng Xiaogang often exposes his audience to it. “If we don’t impress the audience, who are without the painful experience of war, with the cruel injury to life and human nature war causes, how can we bring them a love of peace and objection to war?” asked the director with anger in his eyes. After Red River Valley and Lover’s Grief over the Yellow River, both of which star Chinese model and actress Ning Jing, Feng drew a satisfactory full stop to his war trilogy last month with Purple Sunset. The film tells a story which took place in 1945, at the very moment when World War II was drawing to and end. A Chinese peasant and a Soviet woman soldier flee into a forest, where they seize a Japanese girl. They follow the girl in the hope that she will take them out of the forest, but instead they arrive in a Japanese base. Humanity (仁慈)prevents them from killing the young, innocent victim of Japanese militarism(军国主义). This humanity, the longing for peace and eagerness to survive, make the three unite.“If people are touched by justice, tolerance and unselfishness, I think I have achieved my goal,” Feng said. Feng admits that there are violent and bloody scenes in the film, such as tanksfighting and Japanese burning Chinese people alive, to show t he cruelty of war. But that’s never his personal preference, he says. “Everyone who has watched my films can tell how much I detest war, “he said, “I wrote all the things for my war films by myself. Whenever I finished one, I felt as though I had suffered great pain.”Feng regards every one of his productions as an opportunity to learn about human nature and humanity. In spite of violent scenes which frighten and sicken the audience, a balance is sought with beautiful scenery. Just like the snowy mountains in Red River Valley and the grand plateau in Lover’s Grief over the Yellow River, a beautiful vast grassland appears in this film. “I used to study art and I appreciate beautiful things,” Feng said. “I believe that films should offer the audience a chance to enjoy beauty.”5. Director Feng Xiaogang shot war film because_________.A. he was deeply interested in such a topicB. he wanted to give the audience the painful experience of warC. he hoped to arouse people’s love of peace and objection to warD. he dreamed of becoming a world-famous director6. A Chinese peasant and a Soviet woman soldier seized a Japanese girl so that_____.A. they could find the Japanese base easilyB. she could take them out of the forestC. they could kill her for revenge(报复)D. it would cause the Japanese militarism to give in7.Scenes of Japanese burning Chinese people alive in the film are to ______.A. show that war is cruelB. attract people’s interestC. show Feng’s personal p reference and interestD. make the film moving and interesting8.The underlined word “detest” in this passage refers to ________.A. hateB. likeC. fleeD. know aboutQuestions 9 to 12 are based on the following passageYou must be at the examination center ten minutes before the examination starts. Unit OneSection A Text AThe First McDonald's Restaurant1. Even though the first McDonald's restaurant sold only hamburgers and French fries, it still became a cultural symbol. Now, in the Southern California city of Downey, people are trying to save the first McDonald's restaurant in history. McDonald's, though, says the building should be torn down.2. Built in 1953, the restaurant in Downey, California, is the oldest of all the Golden Arches in America, and has the earliest McDonald's building design.3. Many people have good memories of that old McDonald's. These people are angry that the building is now in danger of being destroyed, along with their memories.4. McDonald's explains that the building was damaged in an earthquake, and therefore needs to be torn down. Many people in the town of Downey don't agree with this line of thinking, though.5. One woman says, "I think it's terrible. They are using the earthquake as an excuse. It's a big lie."6. Another Downey resident remarks, "I am so upset. They don't respect the public at all. They haven't even tried. They could do some small repairs and make it a good restaurant again."7. McDonald's managers say the restaurant is losing money at that location. There is no room for a drive-thru window, or for seating inside. After the earthquake, they say it was impossible to fix. The managers want to build a copy of this building at another location instead.8. Building inspectors, on the other hand, say that the structure can be repaired, but that it will be expensive. Many people say that McDonald's can certainly afford to pay that amount. Some think that McDonald's real reason for wanting to close down the restaurant has nothing to do with money.9. Modern McDonald's restaurants often have a sign claiming that a man named Ray Kroc opened the first McDonald's restaurant in Illinois in 1955. The truth, however, is that Mr. Kroc actually learned the fast food business from Dick and Mac McDonald in Downey. Later, Mr. Kroc bought their restaurants. Thus, many people in Downey think McDonald's is trying to change history, though the company denies this.10. To local historians, this explanation makes total sense. One historian said, "We should not rewrite the past. Ray Kroc did not invent McDonald's. The McDonald brothers did."11.These days, a group of historians want the building to be added to the National Register of Historic Places so that the city of Downey will be able to stop McDonald's from tearing the building down. The McDonald's managers are very angry, and have abandoned the structure.12. Everyone hopes that the McDonald's managers and the people of Downey will soon find peace. The building is still there, but boards cover the windows. Even so, people drive by to remember their McDonald's, taking pictures of a moment in history before it gets taken away. Read the questions and complete the answers according to the text.1. Where and when was the first McDonald’s built?2. Why does McDonald’s want to tear down the restaurant?3. Last fall, the Walt Disney company did something rare: it admitted defeat in its fight to builda history theme park in Virginia. The park was going to be called “Disney’s America”.2. Some people might be wondering, however, if Disney lost the battle but won the war, as it seems is living in Disney’s America these days.3. With its purchase of Capital cities/ABC st month, the company founded by Walter Elias Disney in 1923 deepened its claim on American culture. In fact, it would be hard to find another company so widely respected—even loved—by Americans.4. Americans rushed out to see Disney films, and then replay them—on videotapes; they read Disney books to their children; they watch Disney shows on Disney TV; they make trips to Disneyland and Disney world, where they stay in Disney hotel and eat Disney food;Americans buy Disney products at Disney stores, and listen to Disney records of Disney songs.5. The world of Disney is becoming anything but small.6. All this makes some people more than a little upset. Harold Bloom, a professor at Yale University, provides an examination of the cultural history of Western society.7. “At the end of this road lies cultural uniformity of the worst kind. Its just terrible.”8. This is becoming a popular opinion in universities around the world.9.“Disney products,” said Paul Fussell, a professor of English at the University of Pe nnsylvania, “have always seemed to me seriously sub-adult.10. Those who oppose Disney (and there are many) see its films and by-products as sexist, racist and as simpler, cheered-up accounts of American history and folklore.11. “There’s a kind of protection at work here,” said Henry Giroux, a professor at Penn State University. Like all those opposed to Disney, he can list, in detail, Disney’s many crimes against culture: he is very angry, for example, about the treatment of American Indians in Pocahontas.12. “I mean, the entire history of what happened to the Indians, which some people would call the murder of their people, is sort of played out as a love story,” he said angrily.13. Giroux said he believes that Disney has become a basic educator of America’s children, most of whom will be able to perform every word of the Lion King long before they even learn US President Abraham Lincoln’s historic Gettysburg Address.14. However, even the most strongly opposed are quick to note that Disney has many positive values–cheerfulness, good –hearted fun, and a tradition of artistic quality–that help explain its success. Critical or not, most of those who oppose the company are Disney customers themselves. Choose the best answer for the following questions1.What rare thing did the Walt Disney company do last autumn?A. It planned to build a history theme park in Virginia.B. It admitted that their plan to build another park failed.C. It bought a big company.D. It claimed to be the mirror of American culture.2.People are influenced by Disney in many ways. Children can learn a lot before they go to school.B. People will have many different forms of entertainment.C. People will find themselves in the same culture all over—Disney’s culture.D. People will become sexist or racist.4. According to the text, what is wrong with Disney films?A. Some films are love stories and are not good for children.B. Some films are not good in quality.C. Some films are too cheerful to be true.D. Some films are not true to the history.5. What is the main idea of the text?A.Walt Disney Company is a successful company.B. Disney is the symbol of American culture, though some people don’t like it.C. Disney is not good because it gives false accounts in its films.D. These days, lifestyles have a tendency to change so fast. It is more than just clothing and hairstyle that are in style one year and out of date the next; it’s a whole way of living.2. One year, people wear hats and blue jeans;they drink white wine and eat at Japanese restaurants: for exercise they run several miles a day. The next year, however, everything has changed: women wear long skirts; people drink expensive water from France, and eat at Italian restaurant: everyone seems to be exercising at health clubs.3. Almost nothing in modern life gets away from the influence of fashion: food, music, exercise , books, language , movies, furniture, and even names go in out of fashion. The interests that people follow can change very quickly.4. In the United States, even people can be “in”or “out”. American enjoy following the lives of famous people: actors, sports heroes, well-known artists, politicians and the like. But Americans also pay a lot of attention to people who have no special ability at all. In 1981, for example, an unknown elderly woman appeared in a TV advertisement in which she looked at very small hamburger and complained lou dly, “Where’s the beef?” These three words made her famous. Suddenly she appeared in magazines and newspapers, and on TV shows. She was immediately popular. She was “in”. However, this kind of fame does not last long. Such people are famous for a very shor t time–they are fads.5. What causes such fads come and go ? Although clothing designers influence fads in fashion because they want to make money, this desire for money doesn't explain fads in other areas, such as language. For example, why have teenagers in the past twenty-five years used– at different times–the words groovy or awesome in conversation instead of simply saying wonderful ? According to an expert in popular culture, people who follow fads are not foolish or vain; they simply want to be part of something new and creative.6. Fads are not limited to the United States, however. Fads are common in any country that hasa strong economy (e.g. Britain, Japan, and Germany). However, in the United States, there is an additional reason for fads: most Americans seems to feel that something is wrong if there isn’t frequent change in their lives.7. It’s sometimes difficult to see the difference between a fad and a trend. A fad lasts a very short time and is not very important. A social trend, however, survives a long time and becomes a true part of modern culture. The use of personal computers, for example, is a trend; a fad, on the other hand, could be the use of certain types of computer games.8. Who knows what changes in lifestyle will happen next?Read the questions and complete the answers according to the text.1. My first real long-term job, though, was at a local diner called Mel’s Place. I worked there for seven years and learned so many lessons, especially from a fellow waitress. Helen was in her 60s, had red hair, and tons of self-respect—something I was really lacking. I looked up to Helen because she was doing what she loved—serving people—and nobody did it better. She made every-one smile and feel good, customers and felloe-workers alike.2. I also learned how important it is to take pride in life’s little achievements: when I helped out in the kitchen, for example, nothing made me feel better than preparing the eggs and serving them just the way the customers wanted.3. Being a waitress really changed my life. One of my regular customers, Fred Hasbrook, a salesman, always ate the same thing every day. As soon as I saw him walking towards the diner, I would put his order in without him even needing to ask.4. Thanks to the confidence I picked up from Helen, I dreamed of having my own restaurant one day. Unfortunately, when I called my parents to ask the m to lend me the money, they said, “We just don’t have it.”5. The next day, Fred saw me and asked, “What’s wrong, Sunshine? You’re not smiling today.” I shared my dream with him and said, “Fred, I know I could do so much more if somebody would just ha ve faith in me.”6. He walked over to some of the other regulars at the diner, and then gave me $ 50,000 the very next day—along with a note that I still have. It reads, “Good people with a dream should have the opportunity to make it come true.”7. I quickly went to a bank, where the money was invested for me. In the meantime, I continued working at the diner, making plans for the restaurant I would one day open. Sadly, themoney was not invested well, and I lost it all.8. At that time, I found myself thinking about what it would be like to be a stockbroker, and decided to apply for a job at the bank. Even though I had no experience, I was hired and ended up doing quite well. Eventually, I even paid Fred and my customers back the $50,000, plus 14 percent annual interests. Five years later, I was able to open my own firm.9. Recently, I received a thank-you note from Fred that will forever be printed on my heart. He had been sick, and wrote that money I sent him had helped to cover his mounting medical bills. His letter read, “I’m so glad I invested in you.”10. My father and I were watching a video in which my two-year-old nephew, Cameron, ran into view with a spoon sticking out of his mouth. “He’ll trip, and that spoon will go right into his throat,” my father said with worry.2. Like most parents, Dad has always tried to protect his children. As a doctor, too, he is especially conscious of the many dangers surrounding us.3. I remember having dinner at a friend’s house once, and being surprised that nobody said a word about food poisoning. At ho me, “Did you wash your hands?” was spoken at every single meal.4. Restaurants, Dad warned, presented many risks–from careless waiters who might drop hot coffee onto your head, to employees who didn’t wash their hands.5. Fashion, too, could be dangerous, according to my father. A few years ago, he took away my coat because he said I hadn’t had it made right. When I asked him about it, Dad put the coat on to show me how serious the problem was.6. “Look—it’s too long, even on me. And this material is so heavy that it would pull you down.”7. “I have never heard of anyone being injured by too heavy a coat.”8. “Do you want to be the first? Just cut it off here,” he said, drawing his hand across his knees.9. Fashion was only one of the many dangers from which we had to guard ourselves. To this day, when I walk within yards of tree branches, I pause and hear Dad’s voice: “Watch your eyes!”10. Of course, as children, we did not always listen to Dad. We had our broken bones, car accidents, and illnesses — some of which might have been avoided if we had followed his advice.11. When my brothers and sisters and I talk about the old days, we recall Dad’s telling us not to jump too hard and high while playing sports because of the possibility of backbone injury, and the driving directions he gave us with as few left turns as possible. Now, we find ourselves giving similar warnings: we phone my younger brother to tell him that we read about someone dying from poisoning, or my younger sister to warn her about the high lead content of certain window coverings.12. Now, too, Dad has a new generation to guide. His grandchildren have caught on quickly, knowing to shake their fingers and say, “That’s dangerous!” at the sight of cleaning products. “That’s too big a bite —be careful,” three-year-old Margaret tells her two-year-old sister at the holiday dinner table. As everyone is leaving, we all laugh when my niece says good-bye to Dad: “Be careful, Poppa!”13. After each weekend visit at my parents’ home, I h ave my father dropped me off at the quiet train station for my trip back to Manhattan. As I wait, I can see his car in the parking lot; I know that he is watching to see that I board safely.14. When I am seated, I watch him drive off, wanting, as I do more and more often now, to protect him from the world’s sharpest edges, the way he always tried to protect us. I wish I could give him the reassurance his worrying and caring have given me.15. As the train pulls away, I say quietly, “Be careful, Dad.”Read the questions and complete the answers according to the text.1. Rock climbing competitions have objectives of completing the route in the quickest possible time or reaching the farthest point along an ever increasingly harder route. While not an Olympic event, rock climbing is recognized by the International Olympic Committee as a sport.?Rock climbing has been separated into several different styles and subdisciplines. At its most basic, rock climbing involves climbing a route with one's own hands and feet and little more than a cushioned bouldering pad for protection. This style of climbing is referred to as bouldering, since the relevant routes are usually found on boulders no more than 10 to 15 feet tall. As routes get higher off the ground, the increased risk of life-threatening injuries makes additional safety measures necessary. Climbers will usually work in pairs and use a system of ropes and anchors designed to catch fallers.?Rock climbing is a physically and mentally demanding sport that tests a climber's strength, endurance, and balance along with their mental control. The city is experimenting with a network of electric driverless podcars. The PRT —personal rapid transit —will run six meters under street level across the city. 新视野英语2复习题
新视野英语2复习题passagePassage 1Do you find getting up in the morning so difficult that it's painful? This might be called laziness, but Dr. Kleitman has a new explanation. He has proved that everyone has a daily energy cycle.During the hours when you labor through your work you may say that you are "hot". That's tree. The time of day when you feel most energetic (精力充沛的) is when your cycle of body temperature is at this peak (高峰). For some people the peak comes during the morning. For others it comes in the afternoon or evening. No one has discovered why this is so, but it leads to such familiar words as: "Get up, John! You'll be late for work again!" The possible explanation to the trouble is he is at his temperature-and-energy peak in the evening. Much family quarrelling ends when husbands and wives realize what these energy cycles mean, and which cycle each member of the family has.You can't change your energy cycle, but you can learn to make your life fit it better. Habit can help, Dr. Kleitman believes. Maybe you're sleepy in the evening but feel you must stay up late anyway. Counteract (对抗) your cycle to some extent by habitually (习惯性的) staying up later than you want to. If your energy is low in the morning but you have an important job to do early in the day, rise before your usual hour. This won't change your cycle, but you'll get up steam and work better at your low point. Get off to a slow start, which saves your energy. Get up with a leisurely yawn (呵欠) and stretch. Sit on the edge of the bed a minute before putting your feet on the floor. Avoid the troublesome search for clean clothes by laying them out the night before. Whenever possible, do routine work in the afternoon and save tasks requiring more energy for your sharper hours.1. Dr. Kleitman thinks that__________________.A. getting up late in the morning means lazinessB. if your energy peak is in the evening, you might like getting up earlyC. people can do nothing about energy cycleD. spending some time yawning and stretching helps to keep you energetic2. According to the passage, family quarrels may result from__________________.A. the same energy cycle of family membersB. unawareness of different energy cyclesC. failing to get up early in the morningD. knowledge of energy cycles3. If you are used to getting up late in the morning, you are likely to be most energetic________.A. in the morningB. at noonC. in the afternoonD. in the evening4. What's the likely relationship between energy cycle and body temperature?A. Energy cycle and body temperature are the same things.B. The higher your temperature is, the less energetic you are.C. The higher your temperature is, the more energetic you are.D. There is no direct relation between them.5. Which of the following statements is not true?A. One can change his energy cycle once he makes up his mind.B. We still don't know why people have different energy cycles.C. Habit will help to make our life fit energy cycles better.D. If you rise earlier than usual, you will be more efficient at your low point in the morning.Passage 2The energy crisis, which is being felt around the world, has dramatized how the careless use of the earth's resources has brought the whole world to the brink of disaster. The over-development of motor transport, with its increase of more cars, more highways, more pollution, more suburbs, more commuting, has contributed to the near-destruction of our cities, the breakup of the family, and the pollution not only of local air but also of the earth' s atmosphere. The disaster has arrived in the form of the energy crisis. Our present situation is unlike war, revolution or depression. It is also unlike the great natural disasters of the past. Worldwide resource exploitation and energy use have brought us to a state where long-range planning is essential. What we need is not a continuation of our present serious state, which endangers the future of our country, our children, and our earth, but a movement forward to a new norm in order to work rapidly and effectively on planetary problems. This country has been falling back under the continuing exposures of lost morality and the revelation that lawbreaking has reached into the highest places in the land. There is a strong demand for moral revival and for some devotion that is vast enough and yet personal enough to enlist the devotion of all. In the past it has been only in a way in defense of their own country and their own ideals that any people have been able to devote themselves whole-heartedly.This is the first time that we have been asked to defend ourselves and that we hold dear in cooperation with all the other inhabitants of this planet, who share with us the same endangered air and the same endangered oceans. There is a common need to reassess our present course, to change that course and to devise new methods through which the world can survive, This is a priceless opportunity. To grasp it we need a widespread understanding of nature if the crisis confronting us and the world is a crisis that is no passing inconvenience, no by-product of the ambitions of the oil-producing countries, no environmentalists’mere fears, no by-producing countries, no by-product of any present system of the last four hundred years. What we need is a transformed life style. This new life style can flow directly from science and technology, but its acceptancedepends on a: sincere devotion to finding a higher quality of life for the world's children and future generation.1. Which condition does the author feel has nearly destroyed our cities?A) Lack of financial planning. B)The breakup of the family.C) Natural disasters in ninny regions. D) The excessive growth of motors.2. According to the author, what is one example of our loss of morality?A)Disregard for law. B)Lack of devotion.C) Lack of cooperation. D)Exploitation of resources.3. In terms of man' s brief life it appears permanent and unchanging, but to the forester it represents the climax of a long succession of events. No wooded landscape we see today has been forest for all time. Plants have minimum requirements of temperature and moisture and, in ages past, virtually every part of Earth's surface has at some time been either too dry or too cold for plants to survive. However, as soon as climatic conditions in favor of plant life, a fascinating sequence of changes occurs, called a primary succession.First to colonize the barren land are the lowly lichens, surviving on bare rock. Slowly, the acids produced by these organisms crack the rock surface,, plant debris accumulates, and mosses establish a shallow root-hold. Ferns may follow and, with short grasses and shrubs, gradually form a covering of plant life. Roots probe even deeper into the developing soil and eventually large shrubs give way to the first trees. These grow rapidly, cutting off sunlight from the smaller plants, and soon establish complete domination---closing their ranks and forming a climax community which may endure for thousands of years.Yet even this community is not everlasting. Fire may destroy its outright and settlers may cut it d own to gain land for pasture or cultivation. Of course the land is then abandoned, a secondary succession will take over, developing much faster on the more hospitable soil. Shrubs and trees are among the early invaders, their seeds carried by the wind, by birds and lodged in the coats of mammals. For as long as it stands and thrives, the forest is a vast machine storing energy and many elements essential for life.1. Why does the forest strike mankind as permanent?A)The trees are so tall. B).It is renewed each season.C) Our lives are short in comparison. D) It is an essential part of our lives.2. D) It is supported by the forest.Passage 4The chief purpose of work is not to produce things but to build the man, It is not so important what shape or form our work may take; what is vitally important is our attitude toward that work..Even if the particular duty is one which doesn't seem worth doing, if you must do it, it is important to do it right. Even if no one else will ever know whether you did it right or not, you will know. By making a commitment (承诺) to quality work, you make a commitment to yourself to develop your abilities and self-respect, to do the best you can do and be the best you can be. When you do as little as possible or just enough to get by, you are not merely cheating your employer, your customers, your clients, and your co-workers, but most importantly, you cheat yourself. You cheat yourself out of an opportunity to develop pride and self-worth. You cheat yourself out of an opportunity to meet a challenge and develop your own inner powers and abilities. You may be able to get away with cheating others, but you never get away with cheating yourself. Thus, the key is a commitment to yourself to use every possible opportunity for self-development and treat every work assignment, no matter how small or boring, as a challenge that can be used in your development.Work is a projection (投影) of self. Consciousness (感觉、意识)can regard any job as a potential opportunity for self-expression, for play, for creativity, for the furtherance(推动)of social objectives, and it can arrange the factors in the job so that they form a means of self-expression.Most jobs contain at least some limited options for creativity. To the extent that any job can be done in different ways, the job presents you with an opportunity to project your unique abilities and values into that job. Any type of communication, written or spoken, presents a significant opportunity for creative expression. Even if your efforts are reviewed and must be toned down tofit into the mold (模型) of your organization, there is always a slight opening through which you can project your unique personality. Use these opportunities to express and confirm your existence.1. The most important thing about work is ____________.A. to produce thingsB. the shape one's work takesC. the amount of money it makesD. one's attitude towards the work2. If the work doesn't seem worth doing, you should ___________.A. give it upB. tell others to do itC. stop in the middleD. perform it carefully3. What can work assignments offer people?A. An opportunity to develop oneself.B. A chance to get away with cheating themselvesC. Few options for creativity.D. A way to get rid of your unique personality.4. Which of the following statements is not true?A. Sometimes you have to adjust yourself to your work.B. There is space for you to show your creativity.C. Work must be done in one way in order to be the most efficientD. You may never cheat yourself.5. The main idea of the passage isA. how to improve your creativityB. the importance of projecting your values into your jobC. when to express yourselfD. how to change one's personalityPassage 5Human migrations (移居国外) within recorded history have transformed the entire character of lands and continents and the composition of their racial, ethnic and language groups. The map of Europe, for example, is the product of several major early migrations involving the Germanic peoples, the Slavs, and the Turks. The overseas migration of Europeans during this period totaled about 60 million people. The largest migration in history has been called the Great Atlantic Migration from Europe to North America, the first major wave of which began in the 1840s with mass movements from Ireland and Germany. In the 1880s a second and larger wave developed from eastern and southern Europe; between 1880 and 1910 some 17 million Europeans entered the United States. The total number of Europeans reaching the United States amounted to 37 million between 1820 and 1980. From 1801 to 1914 about million people moved from European to Asiatic Russia ., Siberia), and between World Wars I and II about 6 million more chose to move there, not counting the vast number of deportees who were forced to go to Siberia's labor camps. Since World War II the largest migrations have involved groups from developing countries moving to the industrialized nations. Some 13 million people moved across borders to become permanent residents of Western Europe from the 1960s through the 1980s, and more than 10 million permanent immigrants were admitted legally to the United States in that same period, with illegal immigration adding several millions more.Slave migrations and mass expulsions also have been part of human history for thousands of years. The largest slave migrations were probably those compelled by European slave traders operating in Africa from the 16th to the 19th century; perhaps 20 million slaves were taken to the Americas, though a large number died in terrible conditions of the trip across the Atlantic Ocean. The largest mass expulsions (驱逐) have probably been those imposed by Nazi Germany, whichdeported 7 to 8 million persons during World War II (1939-45). The major trend in internal migration during the 20th century has been the movement from rural to urban areas. As a consequence, urban growth since World War II has been very rapid in much of the world, particularly in developing countries.1.What is the main idea of the passage?A. The map of Europe is the product of several major early migrations.B. Human migrations within recorded history have changed the world.C. The overseas migration of Europeans totaled about 60 million peopleD. The first major wave of migration began in the 1840s.2. Where did the people of the first major wave of the Great Atlantic Migration which began in the 1840s come from?A. From England and Germany.B. From Iceland and Germany.C. From Ireland and Germany.D. From Ireland and France.5. What has been the trend of migration during the 20th century?A. The movement from rural to urban areas.B. The movement from urban to rural areas.C. The movement from Europe to America.D. The movement from Africa to America.Passage 6Somebody ought to defend the workaholic. These people are unjustly accused, abused, and defamed--often termed sick or morbid.One-third of American business and commerce is carried on the shoulders of workaholics. The ratio might exist in art and science too.Workaholics are the achievers, the excellent. There is a national conspiracy against excellence-------an undue admiration of commonness and mediocrity. It is as though we are against those who make uncommon sacrifices because they enjoy doing something. Some popular psychologists say that the workaholic has an inferiority complex which leads to overcompensation. This is certainly not the case. Inferiority, or low esteem, describes laziness more accurately than it describes dedication. We do not seem to realize that very little excellence is achieved by living a well-balanced life. Edison, Ford, Einstein, Freud all had single-minded devotion to work whereby they sacrificed many things, including family and friendship. The accusation is made that workaholics bear guilt by not being good parents or spouses. But guilt can exist m the balanced life also. Consider how many "normal" people find, at middle-age, that they have never done anything well, they are going to settle to less than what they could have become.1. From this passage we know that workaholic is a term referring to those___________.A)who enjoy work more than anything elseB)who make greater contributions than othersC) who make uncommon sacrifices in their personal lifeD)all of the above2. The author's main concern in this passage is to __________.A) point out the role the workaholic plays in the American economyB) defend people who are addicted to workC) encourage us not to worry about our imperfectionD) consider the difficulties that confront as at middle-age3. The author of this passage would most likely agree that the workaholic____________.A)is mentally ill.B) performs an insignificant proportion of American business.C)will not have the regrets that many "normal" people face at middle-age.D) suffers from low self-esteem.4. According to this passage, ___________.A) Freud led a well-balanced lifeB) generally speaking, workaholics can be helpedC)workaholics should be admiredD)so-called "normal" people are truly the sick people among us5. According to the author, one can hardly achieve excellence unless one __________.A) lives as abnormal live B) sacrifices friendship and familyC) has total devotion to work D) ignores popular opinionsPassage 7Evaluating employee performance is a key of management skills. The challenge is to give the employees an accurate picture of chief accomplishments, and of the areas in which they need to improve. Both are important accomplishments because they give the employee a sense of pride in the work and basis on which to build future achievements, and areas for improvement, because they give the employee some goals to roach for.Often, employees fear that the evaluation will be a negative experience. This fear alone can engender defensiveness and tension, which result in a serf-fulfilling prediction. Thesupervisor must take pains to relieve the employee's fear and make the evaluation a participatory event. An employee who contributes ideas to his or her evaluation will be much more likely to agree with the outcome and be willing to follow the recommendations. The employees must always bear in mind that the sole legitimate domain of an employee appraisal system is to improve employees' performance. While areas needing improvement must be reviewed, this should always be done in the spirit of discovering goals that the employee can work toward. This holds true for reviewing successes as well. While praise for past achievements may be used as reward, to engender loyalty, or for other reasons, at the time of evaluation, the primary reason to look at the person's successes is to determine areas in which he or she can continue to excel; perhaps, the most effective way to make the evaluation a participatory event is to ask the employee to come prepared to the meeting. The employer and the employee each should carefully review the job description prior to the evaluation meeting and should make notes on areas in which the employee had difficulty or has made a contribution. At the evaluation meeting, the employer must establish a positive and comfortable mood. The employee should be invited to review and comfortable mood. The employee should be invited to review his or her lists first. Almost always the employee's notes will be very similar to what the employer has written. If the employer simply verifies what the employee has said, the employee will be much less anxious about the procedure, and much more likely to work toward the goals.1. Evaluation is often a negative experience because __________.A) the employee has defend himselfB) the employee is tense and the employer does not relieve thisC) the employee has done a bad jobD) the employer is going to give up employee some goals that he cannot reach2. Evaluation should focus on ___________.A) accomplishments B) areas that need improvementC) a sense of pride in the work D) both A) and B)3. One way to relieve employee's anxiety is ___________.A) to set easy goalsB) to ask the employee to contribute ideasC) to praise the employee's success but say nothing of what he has not doneD) not to invite the employee to the meeting4. The sole legitimate domain of evaluation is to ___________.A) improve employees' performanceB) tell employees how well they have doneC) gain participation in the processD) tell employees what they should have done5. The key to participatory evaluation is that both parties ___________.A) are comfortable in the settingB) get to talkC) contribute ideas and agree on the outcomeD) know in which areas the employee has made a contributionPassage 8Every day, we are influenced by mass media. Although some critics of the media claim that these means of communication are used mostly to control our thinking and get us to buy products we don't need, they agree that the media also contributes to keeping people informed. In other words, while risks do exist, the benefits of the media are far more than the disadvantages. Most of the messages are designed either to inform or entertain—and neither of these goals can be considered risky or harmful. If consumers of the media could be taught at an early age to examine messages critically, ., to think carefully about what is being communicated—they would be able to take advantage of the information and enjoy the entertainment without being hurt by it. The key to critical thinking is recognizing the motives of the news item or writers, the advertisers, and so on. Are both sides of the issue being presented'? Have enough facts about the product being advertised been presented?Furthermore, citizens need the opportunity to hear news, opinions, and public affairs. Information about current events is presented in depth on publicly funded TV channels and radio stations as well as in newspapers. In addition, the public broadcasting media can help viewers and listeners to complete their education. Recent immigrants, for example, can improve their command of English through TV and radio, and in addition, some college courses are taught on educational television.Another recognized advantage of the media is that it gives people information they need for their daily lives: weather and traffic reports are good examples. While commercials and advertising do not necessarily present accurate information, they do make people aware of the availability of products that could improve their lives. In addition, they create a larger demand for some items, which may lead to a fall in their price. While the media can be a valuable means of educating the public, when most people turn on the TV set or the radio, they want to be entertained. As a result most programming consists of movies, plays, music, humorous shows, game shows, and sports events. Some of these offerings are of low quality, but on the other hand, many are fun to watch and interestingly written and well presented.Even though the mass media can be misused, most of its effects are positive. We are all influenced by television, and radio as well as movies, magazines and newspapers. If we are careful to examine their message critically they can all be of benefit to our lives.1. What is the main point of the author?A. Advertising is harmful when it presents inaccurate information.B. The positive effects of the mass media are more than the negative ones.C. People should learn to take advantage of the media's benefits.D. Television is more useful as a means of entertainment than as a means of providinginformation.2. According to the author, the two main purposes of mass media are to_____________.A. control our thinking and get us to buy useless productsB. provide people with information and entertainmentC. make people aware of the availability of products and create a large demand for someitemsD. express the views of the public and help improve recent immigrants' English3. The author feels that consumers of the mass media should be taught at an early age to___________.A. bring their imagination into full play when watching programs of low qualityB. buy products advertised in commercials so that the demand increasesC. turn off the TV set when a ridiculous program comes onD. think critically about the messages brought to them4. It can be learned from paragraph 3 that citizens will be in a better position to express their views and make their choices if they are ___________.A.highly educated through TV and radioB. well protected by the governmentC. highly paid by their employersD. well informed by the media5. Which of the following statements is true according to the text?A. The mass media offers information needed in our daily lives.B. Publicly funded broadcasting does not present information about current wants indepth.C. Information provided by commercials and advertising is always accurate.D. Many TV and radio programs are not interesting.Passage 9When dining in restaurants, Americans usually order drinks first, then soup, salad, main course or entree, and dessert at last. This is somewhat a different order way from that in Europe.Until about the middle of the nineteenth century, Americans didn't have to worry about whether the salad came before, or after the main course since they didn' t eat salad at all. Chomping on greens was once considered sissy, and Americans preferred to get their greens indirectly, after they had been processed by rabbits or deer. The shift of public taste toward the salad may be attributed to New York's Delmonico brothers, who originally introduced smorgasbord from Europe, and served it in their restaurant. Such novelties became so popular that by the end of the nineteenth century, the Waldorf salad has swept the country.Europeans still chomp on greens after the main course, as a way of clearing the palate, and being ready for the cheese. Why Americans eat their salad first is uncertain. The following joking suggestions might make sense: the custom may be related to the slimming craze, for "salad first" may fill you up without any worry about fattening; to avoid customers' impatience with waiting, the restaurant serves salad first to keep them busy while the main courses are being prepared; eating raw food while one is waiting for the cooked food may be a way of announcing that one is not wasting time, which is seen as a virtue; or probably unfair to the restaurant, this custom has been encouraged by the merchant as a trick--the meagreness of a meal is less noticeable if it comes after "free" salad-after all, rabbit food is much cheaper than the rabbit.1. In American restaurants, people are usually served in the order of __________.A) soup, salad, main course, drinks and dessertB) drinks, salad, main course, soup and dessertC) drinks, soup, salad, main course and dessertD) drinks, soup, main course, salad and dessert2. Before the middle of the nineteenth century, ____________.A) Americans ate the salad before the main courseB) Americans ate the salad after the main courseC) Americans ate the salad either before or after the main courseD) Americans didn't eat the salad at all3. Love can be seen everywhere. Y et surprisingly, love has been the subject of less scientific research than other emotions, such as anger and fear. The reason for this may be two fold. First, love is a very complex(复杂) emotion, difficult to describe and measure. Secondly unlike many radial emotions, radical love is generally not a problem; thus less medical attention has been paid to it.What is love? This is a complex question and requires a complex answer. Love is a strong, positive attraction and feeling for another person or thing. But it is more than this. It also involves feeling of caring, protection, excitement, and tenderness. When two people are in love, they feel drawn to one another; they greatly enjoy ea ch other’s company; and they may be sexually attracted to one another.Sometimes it is easier to think in terms of different kinds of love: romantic love, brotherly love, and so forth. Though they are different in some respects, they share one important characteristic; a strong positive feeling toward another. Our feelings toward other people are often complex. We may love someone and, at the same time, be angry with him. Or we may love someone, even though we are jealous of him. We might even love someone and, at the same time, hate for some precise reason.Hate is a strong negative emotion toward someone, and is due to anger, jealousy, or some other factor. Like love, hate can be a very strong emotion. It can also be very dangerous. The question is ofte n asked, “Is it bad to hate?” The best answer is probably “sometimes yes and sometimes no.” Usually hate does not help us; it makes us feel unhappy and makes us do things that may hurt others. However, sometimes it may be necessary to hate and hurt someone in order to protect loved ones.41. The word “saved” in the first sentence of this passage means ______.A. leftB. relaxedC. set freeD. kept up42. Love is a lasting, strong, positive attraction and feeling for another person or thing, the very opposite emotion of which is ______.A. angerB. fearC. jealousyD. hate43. Which characteristic is shared by different kinds of love?A. A strong negative emotion toward someone.B. A strong positive feeling toward another.C. Unhappy feeling toward someone.D. Jealous feeling toward someone.44. According to the passage, hate is caused by ______.A. anger, jealousy or some other factorsB. anger, danger and hurtC. caring, protection, excitement and tendernessD. complex, strong positive emotion45. The works of art have been collected by the people of France over many centuries. It is the biggest art museum in the world. The Louver has not always been a museum. The first building was a fort (堡垒) with high walls and a round tower. It had a moat (护城河) to keep out the enemies.Over the years, the number of buildings around the castle grew. By 1350, the castle no longer needed a fort. The Louver became a palace home for French kings and queens.During times of peace, new treasures were brought in. During the days of war, many treasures were stolen, and the buildings were damaged. When FrancisⅠbecame King of France in 1515, he brought in many artists from other countries. One of the artists was Leonardo da V inci from Italy. Da Vinci’s “M ona Lisa” (蒙娜·丽莎) is the best known painting in the museum today. In 1793, the Louver became a public museum, just as it is now. Reading ComprehensionPassage 1Oceanography has been defined as “The application of all sciences to the study of the sea.”Before the nineteenth century, scientists with an interest in the sea were few and far between. Certainly Newton considered some theoretical aspects of it in his writings, but he was reluctant to go to sea to further his work. For most people the sea was remote, and with the exception of early intercontinental travelers or others who earned a living from the sea, there was little reason to ask many questions about it, let alone to ask what lay beneath the surface. The first time that the question “What is at the bottom of the oceans?”had to be answered with any commercial consequence was when the laying of a telegraph cable from Europe to America was proposed. The engineers has to know the depth profile (起伏形状) of the route to estimate the length of cable that had to be manufactured. It was to Maury of the US Navy that the Atlantic Telegraph Company turned, in 1853, for information on his matter. In the 1840s, Maury had been responsible for encouraging voyages during which soundings (测深) were taken to investigate the depths of the North Atlantic andPacific Oceans. Later, some of his findings aroused much popular interest in his book The Physical Geography of the Sea.The cable was laid, but not until 1866 was the connection made permanent and reliable. At the early attempts, the cable failed and when it was taken out for repairs it was found to be covered in living growths, a fact which defied contemporary scientific opinion that there was no life in the deeper parts of the sea.Within a few years oceanography was under way. In 1872, Thomson led a scientific expedition(考察), which lasted for four years and brought home thousands of samples from the sea. Their classification and analysis occupied scientists for years and led to a five-volume report, the last volume being published in 1895.1. The passage implies that the telegraph cable was built mainly _____.A. for oceanographic studiesB. for military purposesC. for business considerationsD. for investigating the depths of the oceans2. It was _____ that asked Maury for help in oceanographic studies.A. the American NavyB. some early intercontinental travelersC. those who earned a living from the seaD. for investigating the depths of the oceans3. The aim of voyages Maury encouraged in the 1840s was _____.A. to make dome sound experiments in the oceansB. to collect samples of sea plants and animalsC. to estimate the length of cable that was to be madeD. to measure the depths of two oceans4. “Defied” in the 5th paragraph probable means _____.A. doubtedB. challengedC. gave proof toD. agreed to5. This passage is mainly about _____.A. the beginnings of oceanographyB. the laying of the first undersea cableC. the investigation of ocean depthsD. the early intercontinental communicationsPassage 2For many years it was common in the United States to associate Chinese Americans with restaurants and places that wash clothes. People did not realize that the Chinese had been driven into these occupations by the prejudice and discrimination (歧视) that faced them in this country. The first Chinese to reach the United States came during the California Gold Rush of 1849. Like most of the other people there, they had come to search for gold. In that largely unoccupied land, the men staked a claim (立界标表明所有权) for themselves by placing markers in the ground. However, either because the Chinese were so different from the others or because they worked so patiently that they sometimes succeeded in getting a mining claim to make a profit (where others saw no way to do so), they became the target of their competitors. They were troubled and attacked in many ways. Often they were prevented from working their claims; someplaces even passed regulations forbidding them to own claims. The Chinese therefore started to seek out other ways of earning a living. Some of them began to wash clothes for the white miners; others set up small restaurants. (There were almost no women in California in those days and the Chinese filled a real need by doing this “woman‟s work.”) Some went to work as farmhands or as fishermen. In the early 1860‟s many more Chinese arrived in California. This time railroad companies brought the men in to construct the first railroad line from California to the East. They were sorely needed because the work was so hard and dangerous, and it was carried on in such an isolated part of the country that the railroad company could not find other laborers for the job. As in the case of the first Chinese in America, these Chinese were almost all males; and like them, too, they encountered a great deal of prejudice. The hostility grew especially strong after the railroad project was completed, and the Chinese laborers returned to California—thousands of them, all out of work. Many of today‟s Chinese Americans are the descendants (后裔) of some of the early miners and railroad workers.1. What is the main idea of the passage?A. The first Chinese to reach the United States came during the California Gold Rush of 1849.B. Many more Chinese arrived in California to construct the first railroad from California to theEast.C. Early Chinese immigrants to America experienced a lot of prejudice and discrimination.D. Prejudice and discrimination turned Chinese Americans into miners.2. Why did the Chinese become the target of their competitors?A. Either because the Chinese were so different from the others or because they sometimessucceeded in getting a mining claim to make a profit (where others saw no way to do so).B. The Chinese were so different from the others.C. They worked so patiently.D. There were almost no women in California in those days.3. What was the fate of the Chinese after the construction of the railroad?A. They went back to their own country.B. They stayed to work in the railroad companies.C. They went to California to search for gold.D. The hostility grew especially strong.4. What is the meaning of the word “encounter”?A. faceB. countC. enterD. handle5. The following statements are true EXCEPT_____.A. during the California Gold Rush of 1849, people staked a claim for themselves by placingmarkers in the ground.B. some Chinese went America to work as farmhands or as fishermen.C. many of today‟s Chinese Americans are the descendants of some of the early miners andrailroad workers.D. the Chinese were sorely needed because the work was so dangerous.Passage 3The advantages and disadvantages of a large population have long been a subject ofdiscussion among economists. It has been argued that the supply of good land is limited. To feed a large population, poor land must be cultivated (耕种) and the good land worked intensively (精耕细作地). Thus, each person produces less and this means a lower average income than could be obtained with a smaller population. Other economists have argued that a large population gives more chance of development of facilities such as ports, roads and railways, which are not likely to be built unless there is a big demand. One of the difficulties in carrying out a worldwide birth control program lies in the fact that official attitudes to population growth vary from country to country depending on the level of industrial development and the availability of food and raw material. In the developing country where a vastly expanded population is pressing hard upon the limits of food, space and natural resources, the first concern of government will be to set a limit on the birthrate, whatever the final result may be. In a highly industrialized society the problem may be more complex (复杂的). A decreasing birthrate may lead to unemployment because it results in a declining market for manufactured goods (制成品). When the pressure of population on housing declines, prices also decline and building industry grows weaker. Faced with concerns such as these, the government of a developed country may well prefer to see a slowly increasing population, rather than one which is stable or in decline.1. The main topic of this article is ______.A. environment protectionB. population growthC. environment and economyD. climate changing2. The passage says that a small population may lead to _____.A. higher production, but a lower average incomeB. lower production and lower average incomeC. higher production and a higher average incomeD. lower production, but a higher average income3. According to the passage, the use of birth control perhaps is good for _____.A. a developing countryB. a developed countryC. the whole worldD. each nation with a big population4. In a developed country, people will perhaps be unemployed if the birthrate _____.A. goes upB. goes downC. remains stableD. is out of control5. The author is aiming to show that _____.A. humans will run out of their food supply in the futureB. it is necessary for humans to carry out a worldwide plan for birth controlC. different nations have different views of population growthD. we need to take necessary measures to prevent the overuse of natural resources.Passage 4One of the most interesting paradoxes in America today is that Harvard University, the oldest university of higher learning in the United States, is now engaged in a serious discussion about what a university should be, and whether it is measuring up.Should Harvard—or any other university—be an intellectual sanctuary (圣地), apart from thepolitical and social revolution of the age, or should it be a laboratory for experimenting with these political and social revolutions; or even an engine of the revolution? This issue was defined several years ago by Walter Lippmann, a famous Harvard graduate: “If the universities are to do their work,” he said, “they must be independent and they must be disinterested (公正)… They are places to which men can turn for judgments which are fair. Obviously, the moment the universities fall under political control, or under the control of private interests, or the moment they themselves take a hand in political affairs and leading positions in government, their value as independent as disinterested sources of judgment is weakened…”This is part of the discussion that is going on at Harvard today. Another part is the discussion of the militant (激进的) and even many conservative students that a university is the keeper of our ideals and morals, and should not be “disinterested” but active in bringing the nation‟s ideals and actions together.Harvard‟s men of today seem more troubled and less sure about personal, political and study purposes than they did at the beginning. They are not even clear about how they should discuss and resolve their problem, but they are struggling with them privately, and how they come out is sure to influence American university and political life.1. According to Walter Lippman, a university must _____.A. depend on the governmentB. take active part in political affairs and social issuesC. fall under the control of special and private interestsD. remain independent of our society2. Those who disagree with Walter Lippmann argue that a university should _____.A. be engaged in a serious discussion on the role it plays in the societyB. support our old and established universitiesC. take an active part in solving society‟s problemsD. not be interested in social revolutions3. In regard to their goals and purposes in life, Harvard men of today are becoming _____.A. more sure about themB. less sure about themC. less interested in themD. completely lost4. The word “paradoxes” underlined in the first sentence of this passage means _____.A. a difficult problemB. an out-of-the-ordinary conditionC. a self-contradiction (矛盾)D. an unusual situation5. According to the writer, the discussion going on at Harvard _____.A. will soon be overB. will have no resultC. will influence future life in AmericaD. will cause little influence on other universitiesPassage 5The smart job-seeker needs to get rid of several standard myths (不实之事) about interviewing before starting to pound the pavement looking for a job. What follows is a list of some of these untruths and some tips to help you do your best at your next interview.Myth 1: The aim of interviewing is to obtain a job offerOnly half true. The real aim of an interview is to obtain the job you want. That often meansrejecting job offers you don‟t want! Incompetent job-seekers, however, become so used to accommodating (适应) employers‟ expectations that they often easily qualify for jobs they don‟t want. So, before you do back-flips for an employer, be sure you want the job.Myth 2: Always please the interviewerNot true. Try to please yourself. Giving answers that you will suit a potential employer, losing touch with your own feelings (in order to get in touch with some other person‟s feelings) and, in general, practicing an awful policy of appeasement (姑息) are certain to keep you from success and progress. Of course, don‟t be hostile—nobody wants to hire someone hostile. But there is plainly a middle ground between being too ingratiating (讨好的) and being hostile. An effective interview (whether you are offered the job or not) is like an exciting encounter in conversation with your neighbor on an airplane.Myth 3: Try to control the interviewNobody “controls”an interview—neither you nor the interviewer—although one or both parties often try. When somebody tries to control us, we resent it. When we try to control somebody, the resent us. Remember, you can‟t control what employers think of you, just as they can‟t control what you think of them. So hang loose when interviewing; never dominate the interview.Myth 4: Don‟t disagree with the interviewerAnother silly myth. If you don‟t disagree at times, you become, in effect, a “yes”man or woman. Don‟t be afraid to disagree with your interviewer—in a pleasant and pleasing way. And don‟t hesitate to change your mind. The worst that could happen would be that the interviewer thinks, “There‟s a person with an open mind!” The conventional wisdom says “be yourself,” true enough.
