Rapid global warming is likely to reduce crop production in the tropics and subtropics, according to Professor David Batti sti of the University of Washington. The most extreme summers of the last century will become co mmon, he says. We must immediately create crops that can b ear heat and drought if we are to adapt in time, he writes in S cience journal.“The stresses on global food production from temperature alo ne are going to be huge,” said MrBattisti. “And that doesn’t tak e into account water supplies stressed by the higher temperat ures.”He worked with Professor Rosamond Naylor on Food Securit y and the Environment, to examine the influence of climate ch ange on the world’s food supplies. They predict there is a gre ater than 90% probability that by 2100, the average growing-season temperatures in the tropics and subtropics will be high er than any temperatures recorded there to date.“We are taking the worst of what we’ve seen historically and s aying that in the future it is going to be a lot worse unless ther e is some kind of adaptation,” said Professor Naylor. “This is a powerful reason for us to invest in adaptation, because it is clear that this is the direction we are going in terms of temper ature and it will take decades to develop new food crop varieti es that can better bear a warmer climate.”In the tropics, the higher temperatures could be expected to c ut production of the primary food crops by 20-40%, the researchers said. Rising temperatures are also likely to reduce soil moisture (湿度), cutting production even further.Three billion people live in the tropics and subtropics now, an d their number is expected nearly to double by the end of the century.“You are talking about hundreds of millions of additional peopl e looking for food because they won’t be able to find it where t hey find it now,” said Professor Battisti.Crop failures would not be limited to the tropics, the scientists concluded.33. Scientists often cause debates (争论) that will last for generations for their new theory. Still, no scientist has caused more debates t han Charles Darwin. (优生学) In The Darwin M yth: The Life and Lies of Charles Darwin, author Benjamin Wiker will make them clear. ContentsSo who is Charles Darwin? What did he really believe and what did his research really prove? In this book,Benjamin Wiker cuts through the myths. In The Darwin Myth, Wiker tells us:★How Darwin set out to create a godless Theory of Evolution;★Why many of his best friends criticized Darwin's theory, and why he never defended himself; ★Why Darwin's theory in a certain way supported slavery, an institution he hated;★How much of what we know about Darwin comes from his autobiography (自传), which the key pointsare completely misleading.25. The ad gave Scott celebrity (名人)status in the community ofdisabled athletes. He's been asked to speak at a number of disability - related events, and feels it's his duty to use the media to draw attention to those with disabilities. Monkeys kick themselves for mistakes in judgment. And at least one parrot figured out something close to the mathematical concept of zero.Animals can be remarkably devoted-as the stories on these pages prove. What's less obviousis how smart they are. In study after study over the past decade, they've shown abilities previously thought to exist only in humans.A few years ago, Cambridge University professor Nicky Clayton, PhD, found that these birds can be surprisingly devious, remembering not only what foods they've hidden but where, how long ago, and whether anyone else might have noticed. "If another bird was watching, they'd wait until that bird was gone and then move the food," Clayton says.Even more interesting, not all jays protected their food that way-only those that had previously raided other birds' stores. "It takes a thief to know a thief," says Clayton. Another recent experiment hints that monkeys experience regret when they make the wrong choice and miss out on a treat: Researchers say brain scans suggest the animals were having "coulda, woulda, shoulda" thoughts."I knew monkeys were smart, but I didn't think they were that smart," says Michael Platt, PhD, the Duke University neurobiologist who led the study. But perhaps no animal has done more to upend conventional notions than Alex, an African gray parrot. A 30-year research subject for scientist Irene Pepperberg, PhD, Alex whittled away at the belief that parrots were simple mimics. He was constantly being tested; when he tired of it, he would tell Pepperberg, "Wanna go back"-to his cage. If the request annoyed her, Alex would say, "Sorry." The parrot toyed with her relentlessly, and one afternoon, he showed an apparent grasp of something only humans and a few apes had been known to understand: the notion of zero.Pepperberg had a tray of different-colored balls; she wanted Alex to count each group. She asked, "What color six? What color two?" Bored, Alex threw the balls on the floor instead. Finally, Pepperberg asked, "what color five? There were no five of anything on the tray. "and Alex said, "None."32.What's the text mainly about?A.Animals being smarter than I expectedB.The devotion of scientists to animals studyC.The difference of intelligence between animals and humansD.The discovery that animals can grasp mathematical concepts33.From the text we learned that________.A.Scrub jays have better memories than, other animalsB.The parrot is interested in counting ballsC.Studies of animals are very importantD.Monkeys can feel regret if they make wrong decisions34.The sentence, it takes a thief to know a thief in the text shows that________.A.Scrub jays can remember where their food isB.Scrub jaysLike playing tricks on peopleC.Not all gays protect their food as if others were thievesD.Scrub jaysLike to move their food by themselves35.Which of the following statement is true?A.People used to thrink only humans had some thinking abilitiesB.Clayton lead the recent experiment involving on kidsC.Alex is smarter than other parentsD.Platt has studied parrots for 30 years第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)阅读下列短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

One of my father's buddies,Bernie, was a successful fruit-and-vegetable wholesaler, who operated a warehouse in St. Paul.Every summer, when the first watermelons rolled in, Bernie would call. Dad and I would go to Bernie's warehouse and take up our positions. We'd sit on the edge of the dock, feet dangling(摇晃), and lean over, minimizing the volume of juice we were about to spill on ourselves.Bernie would take his machete(刀), crack our first watermelon, hand us both a big piece and sit down next to us. Then we'd bury our faces in watermelon, eating only the heart---the reddest, juiciest, firmest, most seed-free, most perfect part---and throw away the rest.Bernie was my father's idea of a rich man. I always thought it was because he was such a successful businessman. Years later, I realized that what my father admired about Bernie's wealth was less its substance than its application. Bernie knew how to stop working, get together with friends and eat only the heart of the watermelon. What I learned from Bernie is that being rich is a state of mind. Some of us, no matter how much money we have, will never be free enough to eat only the heart of the watermelon. Others are rich without ever being more thana paycheck ahead. If you don't take the time to dangle your feet over the dock and chomp into life's small pleasures, your career is probably overwhelming your life. For many years, I forgot that lesson I'd learned as a kid on the loading dock. I was too busy making all the money I could.Well, I've relearned it. I hope I have time left to enjoy the accomplishments of others and to take pleasure in the day. That's the heart of the watermelon. I have learned again to throw the rest away. Finally, I am rich.24. Why did the author's father think Bernie was a rich man?A. Because Bernie was a successful businessman.B. Because his father admired Bernie's wealth.C. Because Bernie was good at making friends.D. Because Bernie knew how to fully enjoy life.25. What did the author learn from Bernie?A. Being free is what he pursues.B. Being rich is a state of mind.C. A lot of money makes him happy.D. He likes paying all the bills.26. According to the text, what does "the heart of the watermelon" mean to the author?A. Making a lot of money.B. Having more watermelons.C. Being a wholesaler.D. Enjoying every day.27. What's the purpose of the text?A. To introduce a successful person in business.B. To warn us of the hardships of becoming rich.C. To remind us of the true meaning of richness.D. To give tips on how to work with others.13.(8分)Have you ever been given something you don't like or doesn't fit, but you don't want to hurt the feelings of the person who thinks about you? You're not alone. Everyone has received an unwanted gift at least once in his or her life. That doesn't mean the item is bad or useless. It simply means that it doesn't work for you.If you find yourself with something nice but that doesn't fit into your lifestyle, consider regifting it. Here are some discoveries from health experts. Many studies looking into the lives of centenarians(百岁老人) look at what they eat. Many people who live into their hundreds live in the Mediterranean [medtəreni:ən] (地中海), so their diet, which is high in fruits, vegetables, nuts, and healthy fats like olive oil, gets a lot of attention. The diet has been linked to a healthier older age, lower risk for heart disease, and even protection against memory loss.Education is related to a longer life. A 2012 report from the CDC’s National Center for Health Statistics found that peo ple with a bachelor’s degree or higher live about nine years longer than people who don’t graduate high school. James Smith, a health economist at the RAND Corporation, is also a supporter of the argumentfor staying in school for better life expectancy. His findings show education should be an even bigger factor than race and income. Educated people are more likely to land better jobs, plan for their future, and make healthier lifestyle choices.Being a hard worker doesn’t necessarily mean job-stress will harm you. The Longevity [lɔndʒeviti] 长寿Study found that plenty of hard workers lived long lives. “Skeptics(怀疑者) may wonder if hard workers really are enjoying life.” the authors write, “We found that productive, hardworking people (even in old age) are not stressed or miserable, but tend to be happier, healthier, and more socially connected than their less productive peers.”Having a strong social group is associated with a longer life. We often turn to friends and family for support, and taking care of the people that matter to us may help us take better care of ourselves, some evidence shows. Some research even suggests that immune(免疫) function is improved when we are around our friends, and that they help with stress management.Research shows that sitting for long period of time put people at risk for shorter lifespans and other health risks. A 2011 study found that each hour people spent sitting down and watching TV after age 25 was linked to 22 minutes from their overall life expectancy.31. CWhat Cocktail Parties Teach UsYou’re at a party. Music is playing. Glasses are clinking. Dozens of conversations are driving up the decibel (分贝) level. Yet among all those distractions, you can tune your attention to just one voice from many. This ability is what researchers call the “cocktail-party effect.”Scientists at the University of California in San Francisco have found where that sound-editing process occurs in the brain—in the auditory cortex (听觉皮层) just behind the ear, not in areas of higher thought. The auditory cortex boosts some sounds and turns down others so that when the signal reaches the higher brain, “it’s as if only one person was speaking alone,” says investigator Edward Chang. These findings, published in the journal Nature last week, explain why people aren’t very good at multitasking-our brains are wired for “selective attention” and can focus o n only one thing at a time. That inborn ability has helped humans survive in a world buzzing with visual and auditory stimulation (刺激). But we keep trying to push the limit with multitasking, sometimes with tragic consequences. Drivers talking on cellphones, for example, are four times as likely to get into traffic accidents as those who aren’t.Many of those accidents are due to “inattentional blindness”, in which people can, in effect, turn a blind eye to things they aren’t focusing on. The more attention a task demands, the less attention we can pay to other things in our field of vision. Images land on our retinas (视网膜) and are either boosted or played down in the visual cortex before being passed to the brain, just as the auditory cortex filters sounds, as shown in the Nature study last week. “It’s a push-pull relationship-the more we focus on one thing, the less we can focus on others,” says Diane M. Beck, an associate professor of psychology at the University of Illinois.Studies over the past decade a t the University of Utah show’ that drivers talking on hands-free cellphones are just as influenced as those on hands-held phones because it is the conversation, not the device that is distracting their attention. Those talking on any kind ofcellphone react more slowly and miss more traffic signals than other motorists. Some people can train themselves to pay extra attention to things that are important — like police officers learn to scan crowds for faces and conductors can listen for individual instruments within the orchestra as a whole. Many more think they can effectively multitask, but are actually shifting their attention rapidly between two things and not getting the full effect of either, experts say.43. What have scientists in University of Cali fornia found about “the cocktail-party effect”?A. Usually there is only one person who is speaking alone.B. All kinds of annoying sounds drive up the decibel level.C. The higher brain processes sounds and images selectively.D. Sounds are sorted out before reaching the higher brain,44. What do we learn from the passage?A. We are biologically incapable of multitasking.B. We survive distractions in life by multitasking,C. We cannot multitask without extra attention.D. We benefit from pushing the limit with multitasking.45. Which of the following is an example of “inattentional blindness”?A. A careless driver lost his eyesight after a car accident.B. Police scanned the crowds and located the criminal.C. A manager talked on a hands-free phone with his client,D. A pedestrian had a car accident because of phubbing.46. In an unexpected accident, the cattle worker was feeding the animals in his charge when one bull cleaned him up and kicked his hand up against the rail, resulting in the thumb on his right hand being cut off. “My thumb was still hanging on the rail... when I got up offthe ground,” Zac Mitchell says. His co-workers tried their best to preserve the thumb for reattachment, placing it on ice in a cooler, but two surgeries to put Mitchell’s thumb back in place failed. That’s when doctors came up with another suggestion: Remove one of his big toes to where his thumb used to be.Mitchell’s lead surgeon, Sean Nicklin, understood the man’s dilemma at first, calling it a “bit of a crazy idea”. After all, Zac Mitchell did not want to be injured in another part of his body. But as the thumb is incredibly important function-wise, Mitchell eventually gave in. Nicklin explains that the big toe is surprisingly fit for a thumb switch: Nerves syncup (同步) nicely, and it looks more like a thumb, though a giant one, than any other alternative they may have come up with. He added that big toes aren’t as necessary for balance and walking as people believe. As far as the foot goes, occasional “fine balance” activities like surfing might be difficult, butmost people without a big toe function fine in everyday tasks like walking and even competitive sports. The eight-hour surgery went well, and Mitchell is expected to have a year or so of recovery in front of him before he heads back into the fields. What happened to Zac Mitchell on April 4th?A. After all, Zac Mitchell did not want to be injured in another part of his body. But as the thumb is incredibly important function-wise, Mitchell eventually gave in. Nicklin explains that the big toe is surprisingly fit for a thumb switch: Nerves sync up (同步) nicely, and it looks more like a thumb, though a giant one, than any other alternative they may have come up with. He added that big toes aren’t as necessary for balance and walking as people believe. As far as the foot goes, occasional “fine balance” activities like surfing might be difficult, but most people without a big toe function fine in everyday tasks like walking and even competitive sports. The eight-hour surgery went well, and Mitchell is expected to have a year or so of recovery in front of him before he heads back into the fields.According to Nicklin, after the surgery Mitchell is able to ____.A. surf on the seaB. do daily activitiesC. only stay at homeD. work on wheelchairCMost people know that listening to music when they are feeling down or depressed can encourage their spirits. However studies have also shown that music, especially certain tones can reduce stress. So I had to wait for two long years until I could fly a plane by myself. I used that time to master the basic maneuvers(要领)of flying. I learnedemergency procedures and practiced hundreds of takeoffs and landings until I could land the airplane smoothly without bouncing it down the runway. It wasn’t always easy, and many times I would come home feeling discouraged and thinking maybe everyone was right—I would never learn to fly, but by the next day, I was always eager to try again. On the day of my 16th birthday, I made my first solo flight, which meant I could finally fly alone. The night before, my dad, who was my flight instructor, explained that the winds were forecast to be high. He said if we were in the air by dawn, the winds would probably be calm enough for me to solo. The next morning it was cold, but the sky was completely clear, and the winds were calm. I expected my dad to stay in the plane for at least three takeoffs and landings. But after the first one, he told me to pull off the runway, and he got out of the plane.I was alone. As I climbed higher and higher, the world began to change. Everything on the ground became miniature. Houses, cars, and all looked like tiny toys that could fit in the surface of my hand. I made three takeoffs and landings that day. Each landing was perfect. It was one of the happiest days of my life.Today, as a flight instructor, I stand alongside runways watching as my own students take to the sky on their first solo flights. I understand the joy faces, which always bring me back to that day when my dream came true. I learned that no matter how people tell you that you can’t do something, if you believe in yourself, you can succeed.56. When practicing flying, the author __________.A. met several times of emergenciesB. was worried about his own safetyC. couldn’t wait to fly alone in the skyD. sometimes doubted his ability to fly57. But now scientists are giving this feeling an empirical(经验的,实证的)basis. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused and lead to relaxation.Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, repor ted that the height of a room’s ceiling affects how people think. Her research indicates that higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook. In additions to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence an occupant's ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off academically, and it seems to, according to a study led by C. Kenneth Tanner, head of the School Design & Planning Laboratory at the University of Georgia. Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.Recent study on room lighting design suggests than dim(暗淡的)light helps people to loosen up. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax. So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings. “We have a very limited number of studies, so we’re almost looking at the problem through a straw(吸管),” architect David Allison says. “How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them? That’s what we’re all struggling with. ”64. What does Joan Meyers-Levy focus on in her research?A. LightB. CeilingsC. WindowsD. Furniture65. The passage tells us that __________ .A. the shape of furniture may affect people’s feelingsB. lower ceilings may help improve students’ creativityC. children in a dim classroom may improve their gradesD. students in rooms with unblocked views may feel relaxed66. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means that __________.A. the problem is not approached step by stepB. the researches so far have faults in themselvesC. the problem is too difficult for researchers to detectD. research in this area is not enough to make generalized patterns67. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage?A.B.C.D.CP: Central Point P: Point SP: Sub-point(次要点)C: ConclusionDThe Cost of Higher EducationIndividuals should pay for their higher education.A university education is of huge and direct benefit to the individual. Graduates earn more than non-graduates. Meanwhile, social mobility is ever more dependent on having a degree. However, only some people have it. So the individual, not the taxpayers, should pay for it. There are pressing calls on the resources of the government. Using taxpayers’ money to help a small number of people to earn high incomes in the future is not one of them.Full government funding is not very good for universities. Adam Smith worked in a Scottish university whose teachers lived off student fees. He knew and looked down upon 18th-century Oxford, where the academics lived comfortably off the income received from the government. Guaranteed salaries, Smith argued, were the enemy of hard work; and when the academics were lazy and incompetent, the students were similarly lazy.If students have to pay for their education, they not only work harder, but also demand more from their teachers. And their teachers have to keep them satisfied. If that means taking teaching seriously, and giving less time to their own research interests, that is surely something to celebrate. Many people believe that higher education should be free because it is good for the economy. Many graduates clearly do contribute to national wealth, but so do all the businesses that invest and create jobs. If you believe that the government should pay for higher education because graduates are economically productive, you should also believe that the government should pay part of business costs. Anyone promising to create jobs should receive a gift of capital from the government to invest. Therefore, it is the individual, not the government who should pay for their university education.68. The underlined word “them” in Paragraph 2 refers to __________.A. taxpayersB. pressing callsC. college graduatesD. government resources69. The author thinks that with full government funding __________.A. teachers are less satisfiedB. Students are more demandingC. students will become more competentD. teachers will spend less time on teaching70. The author mentions businesses in Paragraph 5 in order to __________.A. argue against free university educationB. call on them to finance students’ studiesC. encourage graduates to go into businessD. show their contribution to higher education第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,共10分)根据短文内容,从短文后的七个选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项.选项中有两项为多余选项.Stay on the brighter side of lifeOne very important component of optimism is gratitude or feeling grateful. In fact, there is a strong connection between a grateful attitude and a heightened sense of well-being. Appreciate all the positives in your life by starting a gratitude journal in order to remember what you’re grateful for. 71Feeling down? Instead of feeling sorry for yourself waiting for the universe to throw you a bone, try acting like you’re happy—even if you aren’t. A sincere smile and a forced smile will cause the same chemical reactions in your brain, so you can actually fool your mind into feeling better by making it react chemically as if things were going well. 72 Reassure yourself that everything is good —even if you don’t feel it.“ 73 If you’re stuck in traffic, then everything else must be going horribly too,” says Anne Parker, a wellness counselor. By blowing negative events out of proportion, you’re setting yourself up for feeling down all day. Instead, acknowledge that you’re stuck in traffic, b ut alsobring to mind something good, like the beautiful scenery outside the window. That way, you’ll get in the habit of forbidding negative circumstances from blanketing your whole day.Swearing to lose 20 pounds or to run a marathon seems like goals leading to happiness, but they take time to achieve. 74 You may even end up admitting that you have been defeated. However, if you focus on the small milestones that occur along the way, you will feel positive about your progress, which will give you the strength to keep going.75 Try making someone else’s day better. A report by United Healthcare and V olunteer Match found that volunteers are 72% more likely to characterize themselves as optimistic compared with non-volunteers. Plus, 89% of volunteers say that volunteering has improved their sense of well-being, and 92% say that it enriches their sense of purpose in life.A. Try to help someone in need.B. Want to give your attitude a lift?C. People tend to think in an either-or way.D. Act in an optimistic way—smile, laugh, tell a joke.E. You’ll fail to appreciate more important things in your life.F. By focusing on not having accomplished them yet, you will start to feel down on yourself.G. By remembering the pleasant things in your life, you can actually turn a negative attitudearound.第四部分:书面表达(共两节,35分)第一节(15分)假定你是红星中学高三年级学生李华。

In the1700s in the Turkey , people in love used to send each other baskets containing a variety of …gifts‟, such as flowers, stones, feathers, and even charcoal. Each thing in the basket had a special meaning. By figuring out the secret message contained in each item, the person who received the basket began to understand the true feelings of the person who sent it.The idea of sending gifts of love with secret meanings quickly spread to Germany, France, and England. However, as time passed, only sending flowers remained popular..Each different flower holds a different meaning. For example, the flower from an orange tree means, …You are beautiful and pure.‟ A pink carnation means, My love for you is strong and great.‟ A yellow rose, on the other hand ,means, …I saw you with someone else.‟ Many flower dictionaries have been made to help people understand the meaning of the flowers. Not all of the dictionaries agreed, however, on the meaning of each flower, so a person has to be careful about the flowers they choose to send.By the 1800s, using flowers to send messages had fallen out of fashion, and the more directway of sending love letters began. Most people, and many animals, like eating it. However, the only way for them to get that honey is to find a wild bees' nest and take the honey from it. Often, these nests are high up in trees, and it isdifficult to find them. In parts of Africa, though, people and animals looking for honey have a strange and unexpected helper - a little bird called a honey guide. The honey guide does not actually like honey, but it does like the wax in the beehives (蜂房). The little bird cannot reach this wax, which is deep inside the bees' nest. So, when it finds a suitable nest, it looks for someone to help it. The honey guide gives a loud cry that attracts the attention of both passing animals and people. Once it has their attention, it flies through the forest, waiting from time to time for the curious animal or person as it leads them to the nest. When they finally arrive at the nest, the follower reaches in to get at the delicious honey as the bird patiently waits and watches. Some of the honey, and the wax, always falls to the ground, and this is when the honey guide takes its share.Scientists do not know why the honey guide likes eating the wax, but it is very determined in its efforts to get it.
