Just a common block of firewood, one of those thick legs that are put on the fire to make cold rooms warm.I do not know how this really happened, one fine day this piece of wood found itself in the shop of an old carpenter (木匠). Everyone called him Mastro Cherry, for the tip of his nose was so round and red that it looked like a ripe cherry. As soon as he saw that piece of wood, Mastro Cherry was filled with joy. Rubbing his hands together happily, he said to himself: “This has come in time. I’m in need of a leg of the table.” But as he was about to give it the first blow, he stood still with arm uplifted, for he had heard a little voice say: “Please be careful! Do not hit me so hard!” What a surprise! He tried to find out where that voice had come from and he saw no one! He looked under the bench—no one! He searched the room—no one! I’ll fix him!” With these words, he started to knock it. He threw it to the floor, against the walls, and even up to the ceiling. He listened for the tiny voice to cry. He waited two minutes—nothing; five minutes--nothing; ten minutes—nothing. “Oh, I see,” he said, trying bravely to laugh and touching his hair. “Well, well—to work once more!” So he tried to sing a merry song to get power, and worked on.“Stop it! 中考英语分类阅读及讲解汇编(三)寓言童话9Long long ago, the animals in the mountains found that men had a beautiful thing. It was a bright, burning thing. People cooked their food and kept themselves warm with it. The animals thought life would be better if they could also have this thing. So they had a meting to talk about how to get that burning thing. The meeting lasted for a few days and in the end the animals decided to send one of them to the people to ask for a little piece of it. At first Mouse was chosen to do it, but many animals didn’t agree, because he stole things and people hated him. Then some animals thought that Panda could do it. But neither the other animals nor he himself agreed, “I’m too heavy. I can’t walk fast,” Panda said. At last many animals thought Rooster was the good one to be sent because he was good at talking and he looked beautiful. All the animals thought men would like him.Rooster agreed to go. All the animals were glad and they had a party to send him off. “I’ll try my best to take the burn ing thing back to the mountains. I’m sure I can do it well,” he said.He flew far and walked a long way until he came to a town of men. He went into the town and saw the burning thing. He learned that it was called “fire”. People in the town taught him how to use fire. But Rooster wasn’t good at learning and he was afraid of fire. He did not ask for a piece of it to take back to the animals, because he found that there was so much food lying around men’s houses, and he enjoyed the food and forgot what he had come for.Men liked Rooster because he sang beautifully and he could wake them up in the early morning. They let him run in and out of their houses. They threw him food. So Rooster stayed with men. He felt very happy in the town and he never went back to the animals in the mountains. Years later he even forgot how to fly.注释1. Rooster雄鸡2. But neither the other animals nor he himself agreed,但其他动物和熊猫本人都不同意。

初中⽣英语寓⾔故事1:Daughter-in-law and daughter Two women were chating in a room, One asked, "How is everthing going with your son?" "Oh,don't even mention it, what a huge misfortune1!!" The woman sighed: "He is poor enough, and marry a extraordinary lazy daughter-in-law. She doesn’t cook, not clean the room, not look after the children except sleep all the time. It was my son who bring breakfast to her bed. "How about your dauther?" "She might be lucky." Woman smiled, "He married a good husband who doesn’t allow him to do the housework, and handle everything all alone. The housework include cooking, washing, cleaning and looking after the children. What’s more, he brought the breakfast to my daughter everyday. Consider the same situation, but when we look at it from my perspective2, it will have a different mentality3(⼼态,智⼒) . Stand to look at other people's position, or at each other's point of view to think about a lot of things, you can have a greater tolerance4 and more love. 初中⽣英语寓⾔故事2:Where Can You Find the Riches An African farmer had heard tales about other farmers who had made millions of dollars by discovering diamond mines. These tales so excited the farmer that he could hardly wait to sell his farm and go prospecting1 for diamonds himself. So he sold the farm and spent the rest of his life wandering the African continent, searching unsuccessfully for the gleaming(闪闪发光的) gems2(宝⽯) that brought such high prices on the markets of the world. Finally, broke, worn out, and in a fit of despondency(泄⽓,意志消沉) , he threw himself into a river and drowned. Meanwhile, back at the farm, the man who had bought his farm happened to be crossing a small stream on the property one day when he saw something gleaming at the bottom of the stream. He picked it up. It was a sparkling stone - a good size stone - and, admiring it, he later put it on his fireplace mantel(壁炉架) as an interesting curiosity. Several weeks later, a visitor admired the stone, looked closely at it, hefted(举起) it in his hand and nearly fainted. He asked the farmer if he knew what he'd found. When the farmer said no, that he thought it was just a piece of crystal, the visitor told him he had found one of the largest diamonds ever discovered. The farmer was astonished. He told the man that his creek3(⼩溪) was full of these brilliant stones, and his farmland was covered with them. Not all were as large, perhaps, as the one on his mantel, but they were sprinkled generously throughout his property. Needless to say, the farm the first farmer had sold, so that he could search for a diamond mine, turned out to be the most productive diamond mine on the entire African continent. The first farmer had owned, free and clear, acres of diamonds, but had sold them for practically nothing in order to look for them elsewhere. The moral is clear: If the first farmer hadonly taken the time to study and prepare himself - to learn what diamonds looked like in their rough state - and, since he had already owned a piece of land, to thoroughly4 explore the property he had before looking elsewhere, his wildest dreams would have come true. 初中⽣英语寓⾔故事3:When Love Beckons You When her love beckons1(召唤,吸引) you, follow him, though his ways are hard and steep. Andwhen his wings enfold you, yield to him, though the sword hidden among his pinions2(⼩齿轮,翅膀) may wound you. And when he speaks to you, believe in him, though his voice mayshatter(粉碎,打碎) your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden. For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify(折磨) you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning3. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning. Even as heascends4 to your height and caresses5(爱抚,拥抱) your tenderest branches thatquiver(颤抖) in the sun, so shall he descend6 to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth. But if, in your fear, you would seek only love’s peace and love’s pleasure, then it is better for you that you cover your nakedness and pass out of love’s threshing-floor, into the seasonless world where you shall laugh, but not all of your laughter, and weep, but not all of your tears. Love givesnaught7 but itself and takes naught but from itself. Love possesses not, nor would it bepossessed8, for love is sufficient unto love. Love has no other desire but to fulfill9 itself. But if you love and have desires, let these be your desires: To melt and be like a running brook10(⼩溪,⼩河) that sings its melody to the night. To know the pain of too much tenderness(亲切,柔和) . To be wounded by your own understanding of love. And to bleed willingly and joyfully11. To wake at dawn with a winged heart and give thanks for another day of loving; To rest at the noon hour and meditate12(考虑,计划) love’s ecstasy13; To return home at eventide(黄昏,⽇暮) with gratitude14; And then to sleep with a prayer for the beloved in your heart.。

"The Missing WatchThere once was a farmer who discovered that he had lost his watch in the barn. It was no ordinary watch because it had sentimental value for him. After searching high and low among the hay for a long while; he gave up and enlisted the help of a group of children playing outside the barn.He promised them that the person who found it would be rewarded.Hearing this, the children hurried inside the barn, went through and around the entire stack of hay but still could not find the watch. Just when the farmer was about to give up looking for his watch, a little boy went up to him and asked to be given another chance. The farmer looked at him and thought, "Why not? After all, this kid looks sincere enough."So the farmer sent the little boy back in the barn. After a while the little boy came out with the watch in his hand! The farmer was both happy and surprised and so he asked the boy how he succeeded where the rest had failed. The boy replied, "I did nothing but sit on the ground and listen. In the silence, I heard the ticking of the watch and just looked for it in that direction."A peaceful mind can think better than a worked up mind.
