2004年3月公共英语三级考试真题及答案2

SECTION Ⅲ Reading Comprehension(40 minutes) Part A Directions: Read the following three texts. Answer the questions on each text by choosing A, B, C or D. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. Text 1 Bum rate is the speed at which a startup business consumes money. My rate would be $ 50,000 a month when my new media company started. So, I began looking around for individuals who would be my first investors. “Angel money” it was called. But when I reviewed my list of acquaintances to find those who might be able to help, I found the number got small. With no other choices, I began meeting with the venture-capital companies. But I was warned they took a huge share of your company for the money they put in. And if you struggled, they could drop you cold. As I was searching for “angel money”, I started to build a team who trusted me even though I didn't have money for paychecks yet. Bill Becker was an expert in computer programming and image processing at a very famous Media Lab at M. I.T. With his arrival, my company suddenly had a major technology “guy” in-house. Katherine Henderson, a filmmaker and a former real-estate dealer, joined us as our director of market research. Steve White came on as operating officer. He had worked for the developer of a home-finance software, Quicken. We grabbed him. We had some really good people, but we still didn't have enough money. One night, my neighbor, Louise Johnson, came for a visit. She and I were only nodding acquaintances, but her boys and ours were constant companions. She ran a very good business at the time. Louise was brilliant and missed nothing. She had been watching my progress closely. She knew I was dying for money and I had prospects but could offer no guarantees of success. She told me that her attorney had talked to mine and the terms had been agreed upon. She handed me an envelope. Inside was a check for $ 500,000. I almost fell down. I heard her voice as if from heaven. “I have confidence in your plan,” she said. “You' 11 do well. You're going to work hard for it, but it' s satisfying when you build your own company.” Who would have thought I'd find an angel so close to home? There were no words sufficient for the moment. We just said good night. She left and I just stood there, completely humbled and completely committed. 46. For a newly-established business, bum rate refers to___________. [ A ] the salary it pays to its staff [ B ] the interest it pays to the bank [ C ] the way in which it raises capital [ D ] the speed at which it spends money 47. By "Angel money", the author refers to__________. [ A ] the money borrowed from banks [ B ] the money spent to promote sales [ C ] the money raised from close friends [ D ] the money needed to start a business 48. To get help from a venture-capital company, you may have to__________. [ A ] put up with unfair terms [ B ] change your business line [ C ] enlarge your business scope [ D ] let them operate your business 49. The author easily built a team for his company because__________. [ A ] they were underpaid at their previous jobs [ B ] they were turned down by other companies [ C ] they were confident of the author and his business [ D ] they were satisfied with the salaries in his company 50. Louise decided to lend money to the author because__________. [ A ] she wanted to join his company [ B ] she knew he would build a team [ C ] she knew his plan would succeed [ D ] she wanted to help promote his sales Text 2 Nearly all “speed reading” courses have a “pacing” element--some timing device which lets the student know how many words a minute he is reading. You can do this simply by looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes and noting down the page number you have reached. Check the average number of words per page for the particular book you are reading. How do you know when 5 minutes has passed on your watch if you are busy reading the book? Well, this is difficult at first. A friend can help by timing you over a set period, or you can read within hearing distance of a pub-lic clock which strikes the quarter hours. Pace yourself every three or four days, always with the same kind of easy, general interest books. You should soon notice your accustomed w. p.m. rate creeping up. Obviously there is little point in increasing your w. p. m. rate if you do not understand what you are reading. When you are consciously trying to increase your reading speed, stop after every chapter ( if you are reading a novel) or every section or group of ten or twelve pages ( if it is a text-book) and ask yourself a few questions about what you have been reading. If you find you have lost the thread of the story, or you cannot remember clearly the details of what was said, reread the section or chapter. You can also try “lightning speed” exercise from time to time. Take four or five pages of the general interest book you happen to be reading and read them as fast as you possibly can. Do not bother about whether you understand or not. Now go back and read them at what you feel to be your "normal" w. p. m. rate, the rate at which you can comfortably understand. After a ‘lightning speed' reading through (probably 600 w. p. m. ) you will usually find that your “normal” speed has increased-perhaps. by as much as 50-100 w. p.m. This is the technique sportsmen use when they usually run further in training than they will have to on the day of the big race. 51. According to the passage, a “pacing” device_________. [ A ]is used to time student' s reading speed [ B ]is. not used in most, speed reading courses [ C ] is used as .an aid to vocabulary learning [ D ] should be used whenever we read alone 52. In speed reading, looking at your watch every 5 or 10 minutes_________. [ A ] avoids the need for reading faster [ B ] is not the same as pacing [ C ] may seem unworkable at first [ D ] helps you to remember your page number 53. When you are reading a novel, you should check your understanding of the content after_______. [ A ] every chapter [ B ] every section [ C ] every four or five pages [ D ] every ten or twelve pages 54. The purpose of the “lightning speed” exercise is to_________. [ A ] increase your speed by scanning the text first [ B ] test your maximum reading speed [ C ] help you understand more of the content of the book [ D ] enable you to win reading races against your friends 55. The best title for this passage would be_________. [ A ] Hints for Successful Reading [ B ] Hints for Speed Reading [ C ] Effective Reading [ D ] Lightning Speed Exercises。

Theories 21on the individual suggest that children engage in criminal behavior 22they were not sufficiently penalized for previous misdeeds or that they have learned criminal behavior through 23with others. Theories focusing on the role of society suggest that children commit crimesin 24to their failure to rise above their socioeconomic status, 25as a rejection of middle-class values. Most theories of juvenile delinquency have focused on children from disadvantaged families, 26the fact that children from wealthy homes also commit crimes. Mark your answers on ANSWER SHEET 1. (40 points)Text 1Hunting for a job late last year, lawyer Gant Redmon stumbled across CareerBuilder, a job database on the Internet. He searched it with no success but was attracted by the site’s “personal search agent.” It’s an interactive feature that lets visitors key in job criteria suc h as location, title, and salary, then E-mails them when a matching position is posted in the database. Redmon chose the keywords legal, intellectual property, and Washington, D.C. Three weeks later, he got his first notification of an opening. “I struck gold,” says Redmon, who E-mailed his resume to the employer and won a position as in-house counsel for a company. With thousands of career-related sites on the Internet, finding promising openings can be time-consuming and inefficient. Search agents reduce the need for repeated visits to the databases. But although a search agent worked for Redmon, career experts see drawbacks. Narrowing your criteria, for example, may work against you: “Every time you answer a question you eliminate a possibility.” says one expert. For any job search, you should start with a narrow concept—what you think you want to do -- then broaden it. “None of these programs do that,” says another expert. “There’s no career counseling implicit in all of this.” Instead, the best strategy is to use the agent as a kind of tip service to keep abreast of jobs in a particular database; when you get E-mail, consider it a reminderto check the database again. “I would not rely on agents for finding everything that is added to a database that migh t interest me,” says the author of a job-searching guide. Some sites design their agents to tempt job hunters to return. When CareerSite’s agent sends out messages to those who have signed up for its service, for example, it includes only three potential jobs -- those it considers the best matches. There may be more matches in the database; job hunters will have to visit the site again to find them -- and they do. “On the day after we send our messages, we see a sharp increase in our traffic,” says Seth Pee ts, vice president of marketing for CareerSite.Even those who aren’t hunting for jobs may find search agents worthwhile. Some use them to keep a close watch on the demand for their line of work or gather information on compensation to arm themselves when negotiating for a raise. Although happily employed, Redmon maintains his agent at CareerBuilder. “You always keep your eyes open,” he says. Working with a personal search agent means having another set of eyes looking out for you.41. How did Redmon find his job?[A] By searching openings in a job database.[B] By posting a matching position in a database.[C] By using a special service of a database.[D] By E-mailing his resume to a database.42. Which of the following can be a disadvantage of search agents?[A] Lack of counseling.[B] Limited number of visits.[C] Lower efficiency.[D] Fewer successful matches.43. The expression “tip service” (Line 4, Paragraph 3) most probably means ________.[A] advisory[B] compensation[C] interaction[D] reminder44. Why does CareerSite’s agent offer each job hunter only three job options?[A] To focus on better job matches.[B] To attract more returning visits.[C] To reserve space for more messages.[D] To increase the rate of success.45. Which of the following is true according to the text?[A] Personal search agents are indispensable to job-hunters.[B] Some sites keep E-mailing job seekers to trace their demands.[C] Personal search agents are also helpful to those already employed.[D] Some agents stop sending information to people once they are employed.Text 2Over the past century, all kinds of unfairness and discrimination have been condemned or made illegal. But one insidious form continues to thrive: alphabetism. This, for those as yet unaware of such a disadvantage, refers to discrimination against those whose surnames begin with a letter in the lower half of the alphabet. It has long been known that a taxi firm called AAAA cars has a big advantage over Zodiac cars when customers thumb through their phone directories. Less well known is the advantage that Adam Abbott has in life over Zoë Zysman. English names are fairly evenly spread between the halves of the alphabet. Yet a suspiciously large number of top people have surnames beginning with letters between A and K.Thus the American president and vice-president have surnames starting with B and C respectively; and 26 of George Bush’s predecessors (including his father) had surnames in the first half of the alphabet against just 16 in the second half. Even more striking, six of the seven heads of government of the G7 rich countries are alphabetically advantaged (Berlusconi, Blair, Bush, Chirac, Chrétien and Koizumi). The world’s three top central bankers (Greenspan, Duisenberg and Hayami) are all close to the top of the alphabet, even if one of them really uses Japanese characters. As are the world’s five richest men (Gates, Buffett, Allen, Ellison and Albrecht). Can this merely be coincidence? One theory, dreamt up in all the spare time enjoyed by the alphabetically disadvantaged, is that the rot sets in early. At the start of the first year in infant school, teachers seat pupils alphabetically from the front, to make it easier to remember their names. So short-sighted Zysman junior gets stuck in the back row, and is rarely asked the improving questions posed by those insensitive teachers. At the time the alphabetically disadvantaged may think they have had a lucky escape. Yet the result may be worse qualifications, because they get less individual attention, as well as less confidence in speaking publicly. The humiliation continues. At university graduation ceremonies, the ABCs proudly get their awards first; by the time they reach the Zysmans most people are literally having a ZZZ. Shortlists for job interviews, election ballot papers, lists of conference speakers and attendees: all tend to be drawn up alphabetically, and their recipients lose interest as they plough through them.46. What does the author intend to illustrate with AAA A cars and Zodiac cars?[A] A kind of overlooked inequality.[B] A type of conspicuous bias.[C] A type of personal prejudice.[D] A kind of brand discrimination.47. What can we infer from the first three paragraphs?[A] In both East and West, names are essential to success.[B] The alphabet is to blame for the failure of Zoë Zysman.[C] Customers often pay a lot of attention to companies’ names.[D] Some form of discrimination is too subtle to recognize.48. The 4th paragraph suggests that ________.[A] questions are often put to the more intelligent students[B] alphabetically disadvantaged students often escape from class[C] teachers should pay attention to all of their students[D] students should be seated according to their eyesight49. What does the a uthor mean by “most people are literally having a ZZZ” (Lines 2-3, Paragraph5)?[A] They are getting impatient.[B] They are noisily dozing off.[C] They are feeling humiliated.[D] They are busy with word puzzles.50. Which of the following is true according to the text?[A] People with surnames beginning with N to Z are often ill-treated.[B] VIPs in the Western world gain a great deal from alphabetism.[C] The campaign to eliminate alphabetism still has a long way to go.[D] Putting things alphabetically may lead to unintentional bias.Text 3When it comes to the slowing economy, Ellen Spero isn’t biting her nails just yet. But the 47-year-old manicurist isn’t cutting, fi l ling or polishing as many nails as she’d like to, either. Most of her clients spend $12 to $50 weekly, but last month two longtime customers suddenly stopped showing up. Spero blames the softening economy. “I’m a good economic indicator,” she says. “I provide a service that people can do without when they’re concerned about saving some dollars.” So Spero is downscaling, shopping at middle-brow Dillard’s department store near her suburban Cleveland home, instead of Neiman Marcus. “I don’t know if other clients are going to abandon me, too.” she says.Even before Alan Greenspan’s admission that America’s red-hot economy is cooling, lots of working folks had already seen signs of the slowdown themselves. From car dealerships to Gap outlets, sales have been lagging for months as shoppers temper their spending. For retailers, who last year took in 24 percent of their revenue between Thanksgiving and Christmas, the cautious approach is coming at a crucial time. Already, experts say, holiday sales are off 7 percent from last year’s pace. But don’t sound any alarms just yet. Consumers seem on ly mildly concerned, notpanicked, and many say they remain optimistic about the economy’s long-term prospects, even as they do some modest belt-tightening.Consumers say they’re not in despair because, despite the dreadful headlines, their own fortunes still feel pretty good. Home prices are holding steady in most regions. In Manhattan, “there’s a new gold rush happening in the $4 million to $10 million range, predominantly fed by Wall Street bonuses,” says broker Barbara Corcoran. In San Francisco, prices are still rising even as frenzied overbidding quiets. “Instead of 20 to 30 offers, now maybe you only get two or three,” says John Tealdi, a Bay Area real-estate broker. And most folks still feel pretty comfortable about their ability to find and keep a job. Many folks see silver linings to this slowdown. Potential home buyers would cheer for lower interest rates. Employers wouldn’t mind a little fewer bubbles in the job market. Many consumers seem to have been influenced by stock-market swings, which investors now view as a necessary ingredient to a sustained boom. Diners might see an upside, too. Getting a table at Manhattan’s hot new Alain Ducasse restaurant used to be impossible. Not anymore. For that, Greenspan & Co. may still be worth toasting.51. By “Ellen Spero isn’t biting her nails just yet” (Line s 1-2, Paragraph 1), the author means________.[A] Spero can hardly maintain her business[B] Spero is too much engaged in her work[C] Spero has grown out of her bad habit[D] Spero is not in a desperate situation52. How do the public feel about the current economic situation?[A] Optimistic.[B] Confused.[C] Carefree.[D] Panicked.53. When mentioning “the $4 million to $10 million range” (Lines 3-4, Paragraph 3) the author istalking about ________.[A] gold market[B] real estate[C] stock exchange[D] venture investment54. Why can many people see “silver linings” to the economic s lowdown?[A] They would benefit in certain ways.[B] The stock market shows signs of recovery.[C] Such a slowdown usually precedes a boom.[D] The purchasing power would be enhanced.55. To which of the following is the author likely to agree?[A] A new boom, on the horizon.[B] Tighten the belt, the single remedy.[C] Caution all right, panic not.[D] The more ventures, the more chances.Text 4Americans today don’t place a very high value on intellect. Our heroes are athletes, entertainers, and entrepreneurs, not scholars. Even our schools are where we send our children to get a practical education -- not to pursue knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Symptoms of pervasive anti-intellectualism in our schools aren’t difficult to find.“Schools have always been in a society where practical is more important than intellectual,” says education writer Diane Ravit ch. “Schools could be a counterbalance.” Ra v itch’s latest bo ok, Left Back: A Century of Failed School Reforms, traces the roots of anti-intellectualism in our schools, concluding they are anything but a counterbalance to the American distaste for intellectual pursuits. But they could and should be. Encouraging kids to reject the life of the mind leaves them vulnerable to exploitation and control. Without the ability to think critically, to defend their ideas and understand the ideas of others, they cannot fully participate in our democracy. Continuing along this path, says writer Earl Shorris, “We will become a second-rate country. We will have a less civil society.”“Intellect is resented as a form of power or privilege,” writes historian and professor Ric hard Hofstadter in Anti-Intellectualism in American Life, a Pulitzer-Prize winning book on the roots of anti-intellectualism in US politics, religion, and education. From the beginning of our history, says Hofstadter, our democratic and populist urges have driven us to reject anything that smells of elitism. Practicality, common sense, and native intelligence have been considered more noble qualities than anything you could learn from a book.Ralph Waldo Emerson and other Transcendentalist philosophers thought schooling and rigorous book learning put unnatural restraints on children: “We are shut up in schools and college recitation rooms for 10 or 15 years and come out at last with a bellyful of words and do not know a thing.” Mark Twain’s Huckleberry Finn exemplified American anti-intellectualism. Its hero avoids being civilized -- going to school and learning to read -- so he can preserve his innate goodness.Intellect, according to Hofstadter, is different from native intelligence, a quality we reluctantly admire. Intellect is the critical, creative, and contemplative side of the mind. Intelligence seeks to grasp, manipulate, re-order, and adjust, while intellect examines, ponders, wonders, theorizes, criticizes and imagines.School remains a place where i ntellect is mistrusted. Hofstadter says our country’s educational system is in the grips of people who “joyfully and militantly proclaim their hostility to intellect and their eagerness to identify with children who show the least intellectual promise.”56. What do American parents expect their children to acquire in school?[A] The habit of thinking independently.[B] Profound knowledge of the world.[C] Practical abilities for future career.[D] The confidence in intellectual pursuits.57. We can learn from the text that Americans have a history of ________.[A] undervaluing intellect[B] favoring intellectualism[C] supporting school reform[D] suppressing native intelligence58. The views of Ravitch and Emerson on schooling are ________.[A] identical[B] similar[C] complementary[D] opposite59. Emerson, according to the text, is probably ________.[A] a pioneer of education reform[B] an opponent of intellectualism[C] a scholar in favor of intellect[D] an advocate of regular schooling60. What does the author think of intellect?[A] It is second to intelligence.[B] It evolves from common sense.[C] It is to be pursued.[D] It underlies power.Part BDirections:Read the following text carefully and then translate the underlined segments into Chinese. Your translation should be written clearly on ANSWER SHEET 2. (10 points)The relation of language and mind has interested philosophers for many centuries. 61) The Greeks assumed that the structure of language had some connection with the process of thought, which took root in Europe long before people realized how diverse languages could be.Only recently did linguists begin the serious study of languages that were very different from their own. Two anthropologist-linguists, Franz Boas and Edward Sapir, were pioneers in describing many native languages of North and South America during the first half of the twentieth century. 62) We are obliged to them because some of these languages have since vanished, as the peoples who spoke them died out or became assimilated and lost their native languages. Other linguists in the earlier part of this century, however, who were less eager to deal with bizarre data from “exotic” language, were not always so grateful. 63) The newly described languages were often so strikingly different from the well studied languages of Europe and Southeast Asia that some scholars even accused Boas and Sapir of fabricating their data. Native American languages are indeed different, so much so in fact that Navajo could be used by the US military as a code during World War II to send secret messages.Sapir’s pupil, Benjamin Lee Whorf, continued the study of American Indian languages. 64) Being interested in the relationship of language and thought, Whorf developed the idea that the structure of language determines the structure of habitual thought in a society. He reasoned that because it is easier to formulate certain concepts and not others in a given language, the speakers of that language think along one track and not along another. 65) Whorf came to believe in a sort of linguistic determinism which, in its strongest form, states that language imprisons the mind, and that the grammatical patterns in a language can produce far-reaching consequences for the culture of a society. Later, this idea became to be known as the Sapir-Whorf hypothesis, but this term is somewhat inappropriate. Although both Sapir and Whorf emphasized the diversity of languages, Sapir himself never explicitly supported the notion of linguistic determinism.61. ________62. ________63. ________64. ________65. ________Section IV Writing66. 第三篇 Everyone wants the best for a baby. A mother wants her baby to have the best in the way of food, toys, clothing and equipment. Her value judgements on prices may go wrong when it comes to buying for a baby, particularly the first one. Factory producers and advertisers(⼴告商) recognize this, and exploit it to the full. Far more is spent in buying push-chairs, special milk, and special powders for small babies than is necessary. The child himself watches television, a particularly strong influence ( 影响) on Small children. Looking at them as they watch television, and then watching them react to products afterwards, suggests that young children accept the television advertisements as well as the guidance offered by children' s programmes , and find both equally attractive. The child comes early in life to the feeling widespread in this country that if something is said on television it must be true. For this reason much Christmas gift advertising, and advertising for sweets, food and washing powders, is specially designed for children because of the effect their repeated nagging can have on their mothers. By exercising in this way they become consumers (消费者) at an early age and as a result, with present-day pressures, choosing and buying goods and services will remain an important part of their future lives64. According to the writer, a mother spends more than necessary on___________.[ A ] Christmas advertising[ B ] special powders[ C ] television[ D ] sweets65. The underlined word "nagging" most probably means____________.[ A ] repeated demands[ B ] baby powders[ C ] TV services[ D ] children' s programmes66. Which of the following statements is best supported by the text?[ A ] Children like both TV advertisements and children' s programmes.[ B ] TV programmes often advertise the best products for children.[ C ] Mothers encourage children to buy products advertised on TV.[ D ] TV advertisements provide the best advice to choose gifts.67. The best title for the text could be____________.[ A ] Mothers and babies[ B ] Children as consumers[ C ] Giving the best to babies[ D ] Choosing goods for children第四篇 The number of people in the world is growing. By the year 2,000 world population is expected to grow to 6.2 billion. The fastest growth is in developing countries, where there is already a shortage(短缺) of food, housing, and jobs. Africa is the fastest-growing part of the world. In Kenya, for example, the population will increase 10 times in the next 80 years. In Asia, a few countries have begun to reduce their population growth slowly, china still makes up about 21% of the world's population, but it has greatly slowed down its rate(速度) of growth. It is now growing at a rate of only 0.8% per year. In India, however, the population continues to grow, and it is expected to be even larger than the Chinese population by the year 2040.The population in India is growing three times faster than in Australia, Japan, and the developed countries in Europe. In fact, European people are more worried about population decrease(减少)than increase. Eastern European countries are growing at a rate of only about 1%. The best news is that, in general, population growth has slowed down from 2.08% in 1970 to 1.6% in 1985. At the present rate, the earliest that the world could reach zero population growth is 2040. At that time, there will probably be about 8 billion people in the world. It is possible, though, that the population might not really stop growing until much later. With people living longer, the number of elderly will have grown by 15% by that time. Nearly half of the world' s population will be living in cities. This is a situation that could cause a long list of other problems including pollution and a lack of food, water, housing, and jobs.68. Which of the following is the best title for the text?[ A ] Decrease of World Population[ B ] Population Growth Has Stopped[ C ] World Population—A Look Into the Future[ D ] China' s Population—One Fifth of the World Population69. Among all the countries mentioned in the text, the one with the highest growth rate is_______.[ A ] India[ B ] China[ C ] Japan[ D ] Kenya70. People in European countries are more concerned about the fact that__________.[ A ] they do not have enough jobs for people[ B ] many people from the countryside come to live in the cities[ C ] the population in developing countries is not decreasing[ D ] their populations are falling71. Which of the following facts is best supported by the text?[ A ] There will be a number of problems in cities in the future.[ B ] The world population will stop growing in 2040.[ C ] 15 percent of the world population will be elderly people.[ D ] Kenya will have the biggest population in the world.第五篇FILM PREVIEWSIn the Line of Fire After his Oscar success as an aging cowboy in Unforgotten, Clint Eastwood plays an aging secret-service man in this action movie. He is Frank Horrigan, a devoted citizen who has strong love for his country and who believes that he was responsible(有责任的) for the death of John F. Kennedy in 1963. When a madman, played by John Malkovich , says that he will kill the present President. Horrigan is given the chance to redeem himself.Sleepless in Seattle A very interesting film from Nora Ephron , the writer-director of When Harry Met Sally. One Christmas, a little boy, who has just lost his mother, calls a national radio station to find a new wife for his dad, played by Tom Hanks. When a radio-reporter hears the program, she is sure that she has found the man of her dream and spends the rest of the film in an eager search for him.The Firm Tom Cruise plays a young lawyer, Mitch McDeere, who finds out that several members of his new law firm have died. When an FBI man finds out that the firm is run by the Mafia (⿊⼿党), Mitch is offered a job as an undercover agent(便⾐特⼯), who will pretend to work for one side while working for another. However, he refuses and thinks up a way neither to follow the FBI nor the Mafia. This is Tom Cruise acting the part he knows best— "The Great American Individual".72. Who plays the major part in the Line of Fire?[ A ] Frank Horrigan.[ B ] Clint Eastwood.[ C ] John Kennedy.[ D ] John Malkovich.73. The underlined word "redeem" probably means[ A ] to show one' s skills and bravery[ B ] to test one' s ability through a task[ C ] to protect someone from being killed[ D ] to make up for a mistake made before74. We can learn from the second part of the text that Nora Ephron[ A ] worked for a radio station[ B ] borrowed Sleepless in Seattle[ C ] directed When Harry Met Sally[ D ] acted the main part in Sleepless in Seattle75. By the last sentence; the writer means that Tom Cruise[ A ] is great American individual[ B ] likes the part of Mitch McDeere[ C ] is at his best when playing this kind of role [ D ] admires the spirit of American individualism。

CThe research was done by a Dr. Griffiths in England. He compared the behavior of 15 regular gamblers(赌徒) with those of 15 non regular gamblers before and after they gambled. Both groups had increased heart rates(⼼率) during gambling because it was exciting. But the regular gamblers’ heart rates went down almost straight after the game, while thenon regulars remained excited and had increased heart rates for longer. When the heart beat increases, the body produces chemicals called endorphins which make you feel good. Dr. Griffiths thinks that regular gamblers lose this good feeling soon after a game and need to play again quickly to regain the pleasure. He has also discovered that regular gamblers have different psychological reactions(⼼理反应) from non regular gamblers. In an experiment where regular and non regular gamblers thought aloud while playing, regular gamblers had far more unreasonable thoughts. In their minds they turned losses into near wins. Dr. Griffiths thinks that nearly winning gives the gambler a high in the same way that a win would do.Based on Dr. Griffiths’ research, doctors suggest that one way to help regular gamblers to give up gambling is to give them beta blockers — drugs that stop them getting a high in the first place.64.Dr. Griffiths’ research helps you find out .[A]which group of gamblers played the game better[B]a chemical to increase gamblers’ heart beat[C]a way to help gamblers give up gambling[D]when gamblers should be given drugs65.How did Dr. Griffiths discover the gamblers’feelings when winning and losing?[A]By examining the different chemicals in gamblers’bodies.[B]By asking the gamblers to speak aloud their feelings.[C]By asking the gamblers to discuss their ideas.[D]By testing the gamblers’heart beat.66.The underlined words “a high” probably mean “”.[A]a feeling of happiness[B]a reasonable thought[C]a great expectation[D]an exciting idea67.According to the text, what do we know about non regular gamblers?[A]Their bodies produce less endorphins during the game.[B]They don’t consider losses in a game as reasonable near wins.[C]Their bodies have no reaction to beta blockers.[D]They have faster heart rates during the game.DIt was probably around 3 000 years ago that people first began making things to help them measure the passage of time. Having noticed that shadows move around trees as the sun moves across the sky, someone drew a circle and put a stick in the center. As the sun passed overhead, people could tell which part of the day it was by noticing which mark on the circle the shadow fell across. These circles were called “sundials”. Later, they were made of stone and metal to last longer.Of course, a sundial did not work at night or on cloudy days, so men kept inventing(发明) other ways to keep track of time. After glass blowing was invented, the hourglass came into use. An hourglass is a glass container for measuring time in which sand moves slowly from the top half to the bottom in exactly one hour. The hourglass is turned over every hour so the sand could flow again. One of the first clocks with a face and an hour hand was built for a king of France and placed in the tower of his palace. The clock did not show minutes or seconds. Since there were no planes or trains to catch, people were not worried about knowing the exact time. Gradually, clocks began to be popular and unusual. One clock was in the shape of a cart with a horse and driver. One of the wheels was the face of the clock.Today, scientists have invented clocks that tell the correct time to a split second. Many electric clocks are often made with built in radios, which can sometimes be set to turn on automatically(⾃动地). Thus, instead of an alarm(闹铃) ringing in your ear, you can hear soft music playing when it is time to get up. Some clocks will even start the coffee maker!68.In the first paragraph, the word “sundial” refers to .[A]the shadow of the sun[B]the circle on the ground[C]a tool to carry stones[D]a timekeeper69.In what way was the hourglass better than the sundial?[A]It could be used under any weather conditions.[B]It could be turned over and over again.[C]It was made of glass.[D]It could last longer.70.Besides telling the time, a modern electric clock can .[A]answer phone calls[B]say your name[C]start a small machine[D]cook different food71.What is the best title for the passage?[A]Clocks of Our Lives[B]What Can a Clock Tell Us[C]Clock through Time[D]Clocks Change People’s LivesE“When one of the doctors criticizes(批评) me, I get defensive. I feel like a child again, being scolded, and I want to explain that I’m not wrong.” says Viola, a nurse. This is a common reaction(反应) to criticism, but not a good one. There are better ways of dealing with criticism.1.Try to be objective(客观). When Sol was criticized by his new employer for not having made a sale, Sol’s reaction was to feel sorry for himself. “I had put everything I had into making that sale,” Sol says, “and I felt that I had failed as a person. I had to learn through experience not to react like that to each failure.”2.Take time to cool down. Rather than reacting immediately to criticism, take some time to think over what was said. Your first question should be whether the criticism is fair from the other person’s position. The problem may be a simple misunderstanding of what you did or your reasons for doing it.3.Take positive(积极的) action. After you cool down, consider what you can do about the situation. The best answer may be “nothing.” “I finally realized that my boss was having personal problems and taking them out on me because I was there,”says Sheila. “His criticisms didn’t really have anything to do with my work, so nothing I said or did was going to change them.” In Sheila’s case, the best way to deal with it was to leave her job. However, that’s an extreme reaction. You may simply explain your opinion without expecting an in depth discussion. You may even decide that the battle isn’t worth fighting this time. The key, in any case, is to have a reasonable plan.72.When Sol was criticized by his employer, he .[A]argued bitterly with his employer[B]was angry and gave up his job[C]was sorry for what he did[D]was sad and self pitying73.According to the writer, you should take time to think about criticism because .[A]people may have a mistaken idea of what you did[B]you should welcome other people’s opinions[C]people may discuss it with you in depth[D]you need time to understand yourself74.When the writer says that “the best answer may be ‘nothing’”, he means you may decide .[A]to take no notice of the criticism[B]to argue with your boss[C]you need to change your job[D]you’ve done nothing wrong75.The writer thinks Sheila can decide to leave her job because her boss .[A]didn’t like her appearance[B]refused to change his opinion[C]made an unreasonable criticism[D]refused to talk to her about the criticism。

For each passage there are five questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage you've just read. Blacken the letter corresponding to your answer on the Answer Sheet.Text AEight hours' sleep is traditionally regarded as healthy —though manyof us need less, and some more. What matters is how you feel, and what you do with the other sixteen hours of the day.We are all built slightly differently, so there is no reason why our sleep requirements should be the same. If, for example, you are the sort of person who goes running around getting exhausted, then you are going to need more rest, but not necessarily more sleep.Similarly, if you sleep "badly", wake tense, and worry throughout the day —and there's nothing more tiring than tension —then further long hours lying awake won't help.Drugged sleep is not the long-term answer either. Sleeping pills merely slow your body down. Usually they let you drop off, though if you take them for more than six weeks, then the actual chemical effect disappears. The only real solution is "turning off" the internal machinery. Work at creating your own relaxing routine, get hold of the things that annoy you most and try to identify them. What is sleep all about? The simplest way to find out what sleep is for is to do without it for a while and see what happens. The brain starts going gently crazy if deprived of sleep for two or three days. It simply stops working in a sensible fashion.Whydoes sleep sometimes not comewhen it should? Imagine, the days whenour ancestors lived inthe jungle. Those who fell asleep too easily risked being eaten up. It certainly paid to keep half-awake, ready for action if danger arrived. The trouble is we are still doing it even though there is no longer any danger. We react as if there are threats to our existence, when all we want to do is fall asleep.Anger and other signs of stress clearly interfere with calm sleep, just as they do with calm waking. Before trying to sleep, it is always better to get your angry feelings out into the open, rather than push them to the back of your mind. As you fall asleep, the mind is less lively and allows those feelings to come back again, where they dance around and keep you awake.I recommend trying to get more control of reality. Then your dreams will be sweeter and your sleep more refreshing.26. As a mother and ex-teacher, I believethat good education involves not only the pupil and the teacher but also the parents. What, the n, is the pare nts' role? The atmosphere at home is bound to in flue nee a child's attitude toward schoolwork. Parents should be positive and notice what their children do well, rewarding success with praise andoccasi onal treats. Un der no circumsta nces should childre n be madeto look foolish for their efforts. Tell a child ofte n eno ugh that he is lazy or stupid and he is likely to become an adult without self-respect. Liste ning is also vital. ______________________________ Children need to be taken seriously, no matter how unimportant their ideas may appear. It lets them know that their opinions and feeli ngs matter. We must be observa nt:able to detect physical sig ns of un happ in ess. A child who keeps on compla ining ofheadaches or sickness may well be crying out for help. He may not be up to the work demanded of him. On the other hand, it could be an indication of boredom. Onno account should a child feel unable to approach his parents. The lines of communication must be kept ope n.At the same time, we can help our childre n to become more in depe ndent, andconsequently better learners, by giving them a few regular domestic chores that theycan carry out successfully. In their free time, active rather than passive pleasures should be encouraged. In other words, reading is preferable to watching television. Above all, we must set an example. Childre n, in the end, will do as we do, not as we say. If we take an in terest in hobbies, so will our childre n. As they grow older, homework must be their responsibility. We can be of most use not by doing it for them (even if we are able to) but by discussing the problem and helping them to approach it in the correct way. In addition, we must insure that the necessary space and equipment are provided. Teenagers need a quiet, well-lit area in which to study, with access to dictionaries and reference books. At this difficult age, although they may not show it, they also need to know that we care.31. According to the text, parents should ____ .A. not criticize their childrenB. be very strict with their childrenC. give more encouragement to their childrenD. influence their children's attitude toward schools32. The underlined part "Listening is also vital" (in Para. 2) means that it is also important .A. for children to listen to their parents' adviceB. for parents to take their children's ideas seriouslyC. for parents to notice what their children do wellD. for children to know their parents' opinions and feelings33. Sometimes, a child may complain of headaches in order to ___ .A. go to see the doctorB. make his parents boredC. refuse to offer help to his parentsD. get more attention from his parents34. According to the text, which of the following is the most important for better learners?A. More hobbies in their free time.B. Development of independence.C. Better communication between them and teachers.D. Good balance between active and passive pleasures.35. It can be concluded from the text that ___ .A. better environment helps teenagers in their schoolworkB. both active and passive pleasures are of most use to childrenC. there should be more communication between parents and teachersD. parents play a more important role than teachers in their children's educationText CImmigrants (移民) Suffer from Losing Their IdentityLanguage is a way to communicate with each other. Westarted to learn language when we were born. However, people are used to speaking their native language, so immigrants are having many problems between the first generation and the second generation because they don't have the same native language. Also, the second generation is losing their identity. Especially in America, there are manyimmigrants that came from different countries to succeed in the States. Because they suffer in lots of areas such as getting a job and trying to speak English, they want their children to speak English, not only at school, but also at home in order to be more successful. Because of this situation , their children .are losing their identity and, even more, they are ignoring their parents whose English is not very good.I think most immigrants are trying to preserve their native language in their newcountry, but this doesn't help very much in getting a good job. My aunt taught Korean to her children not to help them succeed in the U. S. ; she did so, hopefully, to help them establish a Korean identity. Though the second generation is born in the new country, they often get confused about their identity because they look different from others, and also, if they visit their parents' country, they will probably feel different from other people there too. My cousins told me that when they visitedKorea a few years ago, they felt different from other Koreans. They could even feel it just strolling around the street because they wore different clothes and walked differently.Wemust realize that language is important and valuable for many reasons. Immigrants should make an effort not to be ignored by their children and to make their children understand their background by teaching them the parents' language. This is very important, not only for the harmony of the family, but also in helping the secondgeneration establish their identity.36. According to the text, what is the problem of the first generation immigrants?A. They have lost their identity.B. Their children are losing their identity.C. Their children speak different languages.D. They cannot speak their native language.37. It can be inferred from the text that ____ .A. most of the immigrants can't understand EnglishB. most of the immigrants are not successful in careersC. to some degree, the parents are to blame for their kids', loss of identityD. the second generation immigrants can't understand their parents' language38. My aunt taught her children Korean ___ .A. so that they knew they were of Korean originB. so that they would be more successful in the U. S.C. because she didn't want them to speak EnglishD. because she wanted them to respect her39. The writer's cousins felt different in their parents' country because theyA. had never been there beforeB. behaved quite differentlyC. couldn't understand the languageD. had different facial appearance40. According to the text, the native language is important and valuable to immigrants in that .A. it gives them self-c on fide nee and better cha neeB. it makes the sec ond gen erati on love their motherla ndC. it helps the sec ond gen erati on to un dersta nd their pare ntsD. it strengthens the family ties and reminds them of their identityPart B Meaning Guess ing (5 items, 1 point for each item)Directio ns In this part of the test, there are five sentences take n from the abovethree passages. 2024全国公共英语二级考试真题

2024全国公共英语二级考试真题English:In recent years, the use of technology in education has become increasingly prevalent. From online classes to virtual reality simulations, technology has revolutionized the way students learn and teachers teach. One of the major benefits of technology in education is the ability to personalize learning experiences for individual students. With the help of adaptive learning programs, students can progress at their own pace and receive targeted feedback to address their specific learning needs. Additionally, technology has made education more accessible to students in remote areas or with physical disabilities, allowing them to participate in the learning process from anywhere in the world. Furthermore, technology has also improved collaboration among students and teachers, enabling seamless communication and sharing of resources. However, it is important to note that technology should be used as a supplement to traditional teaching methods, not a replacement. While technology can enhance learning, the value of face-to-face interaction and hands-on experience should not be underestimated. In conclusion, the integration of technologyin education has the potential to transform the way we learn and teach, but it is crucial to strike a balance between technology and traditional pedagogy to ensure a well-rounded education for all students.中文翻译:近年来,教育技术的应用变得越来越普遍。
