外研版版高中英语必修三 Module 1 Europe 复习练习题及答案
Module 1 Europe一、阅读理解AHilversum is a medium-sized city between the major cities of Amsterdam and Utrecht in the Gooi area of North Holland, the Netherlands. Unlike most of the Netherlands,Hilversum is actually in a hilly area with the soil mostly consisting of sand. Once called the Garden of Amsterdam,it still attracts travelers to come over to cycle and walk through the surrounding forests. They visit it for a relaxing day off from the urban madness. For Dutch people, Hilversum is all about textile(纺织) and media industries, and modern architecture. In history, Hilversum was largely an agricultural area. Daily life was marked by farming, sheep raising and wool production. A railway link to Amsterdam in 1874 attracted rich traders from Amsterdam to Hilversum. They built themselves large villas(别墅)in the wooded surroundings of the town. One of the families moving in was the Brenninkmeijers, currently the wealthiest family of the Netherlands. They moved in after big success in the textile industry and aided a substantial textile industry in Hilversum. But the textile boom lasted only several decades. The last factory closed in the 1960s.The change to a media economy started in 1920,when the Nederlandse Seintoestellen Fabriek(NSF) established a radio factory in Hilversum. Most radio stations settled in the large villas in the leafy areas of the town. Television gave another push to the local economy. Hilversum became the media capital of the Netherlands, and Dutch television stars moved into the leafy neighborhoods surrounding the town.In the early 1900s,modern architects W.M. Dudok and J.Duiker placed hundreds of remarkable buildings in Hilversum. These modern architectural masterpieces(杰作) are so many that Hilversum almost feels like an open airmuseum.Dudok alone shaped most of 20th century Hilversum and approximately 75 buildings still bear his unique characteristies. His masterpiece. Hilversum Town Hall, was built in 1928-1931.It has wide international fame and is included in many architecture textbooks. The building has a remarkable shape and looks like a combination of “blocks”.Actually, one may start his journey of modern architecture by walking or biking the W.M. Dudok Architectural Route in Hilversum. 1.Hilversurn is different from most of the Netherlands in that ________.A.it has a large population B.it is cut off from big citiesC.it has many beautiful gardens D.it is in a hilly area with sandy soil 2.What was the greatest contribution of the Brenninkmeijers to Hilversum? A.Building a railway link to Amsterdam.B.Helping its textile industry to develop.C.Constructing large villas for the poor.D.Assisting its agricultural industry.3.The beginning of the media industry in Hilversum was marked by the establishment of ________.A.a radio factory B.the media capital C.a radio station D.a TV station 4.What is known about W.M. Dudok's Hilversum Town Hall?A.It consists of approximately 75 buildings.B.It looks like an open air museum in the city.C.It is a classic example in architecture textbooks.D.It has shaped most of 20th century Hilversum.BPlanning a visit to the UK? Here we help with ways to cut your costs.A VOID BIG EVENTS Big sporting events, concerts and exhibitions can increase the cost of accommodation and make it harder to find a room. A standard double room at the Thistle Brighton on the final Friday of the Brighton ComedyFestival (19 Oct.) cost £169.15 at . A week later, the same room cost £118.15.If you can be flexible and want to know dates to avoid—or you're looking for a big event to pass your time—check out sites such as , which allow you to search for events in the UK by city, date and category.STAY AWAY FROM THE STATION If traveling to your destination by train, you may want to find a good base close to the station, but you could end up paying more for the sake of convenience at the start of your holiday.Don't be too choosy about the part of town you stay in. Booking two months in advance, the cheapest room at Travelodge's Central Euston hotel in London for Saturday 22 September was £95.95. A room just a tube journey away at its Covent Garden hotel was £75.75. And at Farringdon, a double room cost just £62.95.LOOK AFTER YOURSELF Really central hotels in cities such as London, Edinburgh and Cardiff can cost a fortune, especially at weekends and during big events. As an alternative consider checking into a self-catering flat with its own kitchen. Often these flats are hidden away on the top floors of city centre buildings. A great example is the historic O'Neill Flat on Edinburgh's Royal Mile, available for £420 for five days in late September, with room for four adults.GET ON A BIKE London's “Boris bikes” have attracted the most attention, but other cities also have similar programmes that let you rent a bicycle and explore at your own pace, saving you on public transport or car parking costs.Among the smaller cities with their own programmes are Newcastle (casual members pay around £1.50 for two hours) and Cardiff (free for up to 30 minutes, or £5 per day).5.The Brighton Comedy Festival is mentioned mainly to show big events may ________.A.help travelers pass timeB. attract lots of travelers to the UKC.allow travelers to make flexible plansD. cause travelers to pay more for accommodation6. “Farringdon” in Paragraph 5 is most probably ________.A.a hotel away from the train station B. the tube line to Covent Garden C.an ideal holiday destination D. the name of a travel agency 7.The passage shows that the O'Neill Flat ________.A.lies on the ground floorB. is located in central LondonC.provides cooking facilities for touristsD. costs over £100 on average per day in late September8.Cardiff's program allows a free bike for a maximum period of ________. A.half an hour B.one hour C.one hour and a half D.two hours二、七选五根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。

ABackpacking in Europe is a wonderful experience for young people around the world. After high school or university, you can plan a European backpacking trip.PackingAs you plan the things you will carry, bring warm clothes and a raincoat or umbrella to deal with changing weather in different European countries.Europeans like dressing nicely, and good clothes will make you feel less like a dusty backpacker. It is not worth taking the trouble to bring a hair dryer or shampoo,as you can buy basic necessities in Europe.HostelsThe cheapest places to sleep when backpacking in Europe are hostels (where people can stay and eat fairly cheaply). Most hostels h ave a lot of information about lowcost ways to see local attractions, and many offer tours. The cost for hostel beds differs from country to country. In Paris, you might pay 30 euros, but in Bulgaria, you can get a bed for 10 euros. In general, hostels are more expensive in large, popular cities such as Paris,Rome and London. Many backpackers use rail passes(火车通票),which allow unlimited(不受限的) travel within country groups over a period of time.If you have the time to travel by train and will be traveling in a country group, this can be a good deal.Otherwise, you may consider pointtopoint tickets, local trains, buses and airlines such as Ryanair, easyJet and Wizz Air,which offer cheap flights.FoodEating out in Europe can come with a high cost, and the best way to cut your food budget(预算) is to cook meals in the shared kitchens in hostels. You can make several meals into picnics to take advantage of Europe’s parks. When shopping for your picnic, try and buy at a local market. You save some euros while supporting the local industries at the same time. When eating out, choose restaurants away from tourist attractions.21.Which of the following is an advantage of hostels?A.They are often built in popular cities.B.They usually provide tour information.C.They are mainly open to young people.D.They always ask the same price for their beds.答案 B解析细节理解题。

wooden one that was built in Saxon times, seems to have given rise to the nursery rhyme(童谣)“London Bridge is falling down”,which it did in 1014.In 1176 the first stone bridge was built.Houses appeared on both sides of the bridge and it stood more than six hundred years until it was pulled down in 1813,making room for a new one north of the old London Bridge, which cost more than ten years to build. As it was not wide enough for heavy traffic, the “new” bridge was replaced in 1967.The present London Bridge is more than 100 feet wide. The London Bridge before the present one was bought in the 1960s by the McCulloch Oil Corporation of California, which rebuilt it stone by stone at Lake Havens City,in a corner of America's Arizona Desert. There is a rumor(传言)saying that the McCulloch Oil Corporation believed they were buying the much more excellent Tower Bridge.By the way,the Tower Bridge was built from 1885 and was opened 9 years later by Edward Ⅶ,the Prince of Wales at that time.It is the only bridge in London that is big enough for ships to pass.Since the Thames is no longer used as much as a trade and shipping route(航道),the Tower Bridge is only used 4 or 5 times a week. The Tower Bridge is often mistaken for London Bridge, which is dull in comparison(相比之下).The Tower Bridge is one of the finest, most recognizable bridges in the world,on which you can enjoy breathtaking views of London.36.How many “London Bridges” were there before the present one?A.Five. B.Four.C.Three. D.Two.37.Why did the McCulloch Oil Corporation buy the London Bridge in the 1960s?A.Because they preferred the Tower Bridge to London Bridge.B.Because they thought they were buying the Tower Bridge.C.Because they thought they could use it to solve the traffic problem.D.Because they wanted Americans to visit London Bridge in their own country.38.From this passage we can know that ________.A.London Bridge is more excellent than the Tower BridgeB.the Tower Bridge is more excellent than London BridgeC.both London Bridge and the Tower Bridge can allow ships to passD.neither London Bridge nor the Tower Bridge can allow ships to pass39.According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A.The nursery rhyme mentioned in the passage is about the first London Bridge.B.The present London Bridge is not wide enough.C.The Tower Bridge was opened in 1885.D.The Tower Bridge was used much more than nowadays.BThe Eiffel Tower is one of Europe's most famous buildings. It stands in the Champ de Mars,a park near the River Seine in Paris. It is 300 meters tall and was built by Alexander Gustave Eiffel for the Paris Universal Exposition(展览会)in 1889,or “expos” as we now call them, and these “expos” are places where people can see new inventions, new kinds of art,and new kinds of food.Because the tower was such a tall building,Eiffel wanted to make it easy for people to get to the top.He wanted to use an elevator, which was a very new invention at that time.Eiffel asked Elisha Otis to design an elevator to the first and second platform of the building.Unfortunately, the French government did not like the first design that Otis showed them, and they would not let him put the elevator in.By early 1889,the first visitors had to climb hundreds of stairs to get on the first and second platform of the tower. The Eiffel Tower cost over a million US dollars—a lot of money at that time.People who invested in the building were worried that they would not get their money back. However,in the first year they got much more than their money back.Thousands of tickets were sold to people who wanted to go up and look at the view from the top.The opening of the Eiffel Tower took place on 10th June 1889.Eiffel himself lived in the tower where he had his own apartment. Many kings and queens visited the tower during the opening and,of course, they visited Eiffel's apartment.Although Eiffel designed the tower for people to visit,it was also used for scientific experiments.Nowadays, the tower gets twice as many visitors as the other very famous building in Paris—the Louvre. The writer Oscar Wilde said that he liked the Eiffel Tower because it was the only place in Paris where he could not see the Eiffel Tower!40.The story is about ________.A.new Life第二部分阅读理解(共20小题;每小题2分,满分40分)AIf you look for a book as a present for a child, you will be spoiled for choice even in a year when there is no new Harry Potter. J.K. Rowling’s wizard is not alone: the past decade has been a harvest for good children’s books, which has set off a large quantity of films and an increased sales of classics such as The Lord of the Rings.Yet despite that, reading is increasingly unpopular among children. According to statistics in 1997,23% said they didn’t like reading at all. In 2003, 35% did. And around 6% of children leave primary school each year unable to read properly.Maybe the decline is caused by the increasing availability of computer games. Maybe the books boom has affected only the top of the educational pile. Either way, Chancellor Gordon Brown plans to change things for the bottom of the class. In this pre- budget report, he announced the national project of Reading Recovery to help the children struggling most.Reading Recovery is aimed at six-year olds, who receive four months of individual daily half hour classes with a specially trained teacher. An evaluation earlier this year reported that children on the scheme made 20 months progress in just one year, whereas similarly weak readers without special help made just five months progress, and so ended the year even further below the level expected for their age.International research tends to find that when British children leave primary school they read well, but read less often for fun than those elsewhere. Reading for fun matters because children who are keen on reading can expect lifelong pleasure and loving books is an excellent indicator of future educational success. According to the OECD, being a regular and enthusiastic reader is of great advantage.36. Which of the following is true of Paragraph 1?A. Many children’s books have been adapted fromfilms.B. Many high quality children’s books have beenpublished.C. The sales of classics have led to the popularity offilms.D. The sales of presents for children have increased.37. What do we know about Reading Recovery?A. An evaluation of it will be made sometime thisyear.B. Weak readers on the project were the mosthardworking.C. It aims to train special teachers to help childrenwith reading.D. Children on the project showed noticeableprogress in reading.39. Reading for fun is important because book loving children _________.A. take greater advantage of the projectB. show the potential to enjoy a long lifeC. are likely to succeed in their educationD. would make excellent future researchers40. The aim of this text would probably be _________.A. to overcome primary school pupils ’readingdifficultyB. to encourage the publication of more children’sbooksC. to remind children of the importance of readingfor funD. to introduce a way to improve early childhoodreadingBAnna Douglas was 72 years old when she started writing her newspaper column(专栏). After she retired, she found a volunteer job with an agency. The agency that she chose to work for was a business that helped other businesses find jobs for old people. Every day she talked with other retired people like herself. By talking, she recognized two things: old people had abilities that were not being used. Old people also had problems—mostly problems with communication.Mrs Douglas found a new purpose for herself. Through the year, from time to time she had written stories about people for national magazines. Now there was a new subject: old people like herself. She began to write a newspaper column called “Sixty Plus”, which focuses on getting old. She writes about the problems of old people, especially their problems with being misunderstood.Anna Douglas used her thinking ability to see the truth behind a problem. She understands the reasons why problems begin. She understands old people and young people, too. For example, one of her readers said that his grandchildren left the house as soon as he came to visit. Mrs Douglas suggested some ways for him to increase understanding with his grandchildren. She told him to listen to young people’s music and to watch the most popular television shows.“It’s important to know something about your grandchildren’s world,”says Mrs Douglas.“That means questions and listening—and listening is not what old people do best.”She continues,“Say good things to them and about them. Never criticize your grandchildren or any other youngsters, teenagers, oryoung adults. Never tell them that they are wrong. Don’t give them your opinion. They have been taught that they should have respect for old people. The old should have respect for the young as well.”41. As in other cultures, many Americans attend parties for weddings and religious or national holidays. But some parties are especially American. For example, a group of neighbors may gather on their street to eat food, play music and visit with one another. This is called a block party. A woman might invite a group of women to a party called a baby shower for a friend who is about to give birth. Guests bring presents for the new baby.Americans also attend tailgate parties. A tailgate is the back end of a truck or other vehicle that opens down. The tailgate parties are a big part of sports culture in the United States. Friends bring food and drink to a sports event. They eat together in the parking area of the sports stadium.Birthday parties are also very popular. Many parents organize a party for their child around a theme. Birthday parties usually include gifts and a birthday cake with candles. In many parts of the United States, cupcakes have become a popular replacement for cakes.Birthday parties can be low cost or very costly. Some parents take their children’s birthday parties very seriously, even when the child is too young to fully understand the celebration. One group of parents started a website called Birthdays Without Pressure. They decided that some parents were under too much social pressure to plan costly parties for their children. The group sees this movement as an example of America’s culture of “too much stuff”. The group’s website gives suggestions on how to keep birthday celebrations simple, meaningful and fun without spending a lot of money. Their advice may be all the more(格外) helpful during this period of economic recession(萧条).46. What can be the best title for the passage?A. Reasons for partiesB. American partiesC. I don’t think that anyone fully understands the pressure of a teenager. When I don’t know what to do, I turn to my friend—Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul. The book has helped me to understand and deal with the problems I went through.I went through a confusing(令人困惑的)time when we got to senior high. I had known these friends since very young, but when we began senior high, it seemed like some of them began to change. We slowly got apart and started going to different groups. It seemed as if we had never been friends. I felt confused and hurt.Sometime during this time, I read the story—Friends Forever in Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul Ⅱ.After reading it, I realized that many friendships went through changes and that we weren’t the only friends to experience them. Once I understood it as a part of being a teenager, I started to relax(放松)and let go.People change, but that doesn’t mean we have to lose the friendship. Now my friends and I still spend time together and we still care about each other a lot. That things are different doesn’t mean we have to forget the good times. If so, you likely have a case of test anxiety. But, don’t panic. By recognizing the problem, you are taking the first step towards overcoming it.Believe it or not, a touch of nervousness can sharpen your mind, allowing you to perform more quickly. This is because under stress, the body releases the hormone adrenaline, which prepares it for something important that will happen. However, too much anxiety can result in sleeplessness, loss of appetite before tests, and poor performance. Some people might feel shaky, hot, or even sick.If you worry a lot, you are more likely to have trouble with test anxiety. Those who have prepared poorly for a test or have had negative experiences taking tests may .When you feel a storm of anxiety coming on, stop what you’re doing and make your mind a blank. If possible, actually tell yourself to “STOP!”This will get your mind off the stress. Then think of being at a place of comfort and let your body relax. As you continue the test, find questions you know the answers to and answer them first. This will help restore your confidence.Another thing you can do is to learn to accept mistakes. In fact, they can be valuable learningopportunities.Last but not least, start test preparation early—three to five days ahead of the quiz or test.
