24 Society【美文阅读】一项调查显示,参加青年俱乐部能增强青少年的自我概念,从而帮助他们接受正确的行为规范,在学习和生活中有更好的表现。
Youth clubs keep kids out of troubleWhen children belong to a youth club, they gain a strongersense of who they are as a person, an Ohio State University study has revealed. The study suggests that even small improvements in self-concept can go a long way toward keeping children out of trouble."The more kids participate in these clubs, the better self- concept they have, ” said Dawn Anderson- Butcher, an associate professor of social work at Ohio State. "And then that self-concept makes children less likely to engage in problem behaviors. ”"WeYe finding that daily attendance(出席)isiTt as important as whether the kids feel attached to the organization and have a good relationship with a staff member. Those two things predict the best outcomes and the least amount ofvulnerability(脆弱性).”This study surveyed nearly 300 children from 9 to 16.The children filled out the assessment form, which measures how attached children feel to their family, neighborhood, and school; whether they have a strong sense of who they are and strong self- respect; and whether they earn good grades.Anderson-Butcher and Scottye Cash, also an associate professor of social work, compared the survey data with the lastsix months of the children's attendance records from the club to see if there was any association.Because club attendance is voluntary, some children come more frequently than others. They freely choose among recreational(娱乐的)activities (such as playing basketball)^ academic assistance^ and life skill classes. This study simply counted time spent at the club, and not children's specific activities. The study revealed that the more children participated in the club, the stronger their sense of self was. Participation in theclub strengthened their social skills as well."Strong relationships are built over time, ” Anderson- Butcher said. "It takes time for children to develop an attachment to the club—to feel committed to it. And with that commitment comes the acceptance of nouns(行为规范)and positive behaviors•”Based on this latest study, the researchers suggested that clubs consider self- concept as the center of their educational programs.【诱思导学】l.What advantages will attending youth clubs for children bring?2.Why do some children come more frequently than others ?【答案】l.Children gain self-concept and strengthen their social skills. 2.Because club attendance is voluntary.Period I Previewings■教师用书独具演示•教学目标本课时主要是通过学生对学案所给岀的内容的学习,T 解本课文中所出现的词汇,初步了解课文以及相关的背景知 识,对下一堂课对课文的全面理解起到一个铺垫作用。

Ask students to read the text in Ex6 on Page 94.2. Ask students to state the reasons for using the passive voice in English. Step II A brief introduction of rainforestsFirst make a brief introduction of rainforests. Then students are given seven minutes to read the article to get a main idea of the article.T: In this class we are going to learn something about rainforests. Before reading the text, look at the brief introduction.(Show the following on the PowerPoint.) Teacher asks the questions, students read the materials together. What is a Rainforest?Rainforests are very dense, warm, wet forests. They are havens (安身之处) for millions of plants and animals. Rainforests are extremely important in the ecology of the Earth. The plants of the rainforest generate much of the Earth's oxygen. These plants are also very important to people in other ways; many are used in new drugs that fight disease and illness.Strata of the RainforestDifferent animals and plants live in different parts of the rainforest. Scientists divide the rainforest into strata (zones) based on the living environment. Starting at the top, the strata are:EMERGENTS: Gi ant trees that are much higher than the average canopy height. It houses many birds and insects.CANOPY: The upper parts of the trees. This leafy environment is full of life in a tropical rainforest and includes: insects, birds, reptiles, mammals, and more. UNDERSTORY: A dark, cool environment under the leaves but over the ground.FOREST FLOOR: Teeming with animal life, especially insects. The largest animals in the rainforest generally live here.Animals of the RainforestsAn incredible number of animals live in rainforests. Millions of insects, reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals call them home. Insects are the most numerous animals in rainforests. Tropical rainforests have a greater diversity of plants and animals than temperate rai nforests or any other biome. In temperate rainforests, most of the animals are ground dwellers and there are fewer animals living in the forest canopy.Where are Rainforests?Tropical rainforests are found in a belt ar ound the equator of the Earth. There are tropical rainforests across South America, Central America, Africa, Southeast Asia and Australia (and nearby islands). Temperate rainforests are found along the Pacific coast of the USA and Canada (fr om northern California to Alaska), in New Zealand, Tasmania, Chile, Ireland, Scotland and Norway. They are less abundant than tropical rainforests.RainfallIt is almost always raining in a rainforest. Rainforests get over 80 inches (2 m) of rain each year. This is about 1 1/2 inches (3.8 cm) of rain each week. The rain is more evenly distributed throughout the year in a tropical rainforest (even though there is a little seasonality). In a temperate rainforest, there are wet and dry seasons. Dur ing the "dry" season, coastal fog supplies abundant moisture to the forest.TemperatureThe temperature in a rainforest never fre ezes and never gets very hot. The range of temperature in a tropical rainforest isusually between 75° F and 80° F (24-27° C). Temperate rainforests rarely freeze or get over 80° F (27° C).The Soil in a RainforestThe soil of a tropical rainforest is only about 3-4 inches (7.8-10 cm) thick and is ancient. Thick clay lies underneath the soil. Once damaged, the soil of a tropical rainforest takes many years to recover.Temperate rainforests have soil that is richer in nutrients, relatively young and less prone to damage. The Importance of RainforestsTropical rainforests cover about 7% of the Earth's surface and are VERY important to the Earth's ecosystem. The rainforests recycle and clean water. Tropical rainforest trees and plants also remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and store it in their roots, stems, leaves, and branches. Rainforests affect the greenhouse effect, which traps heat inside the Earth's atmosphere. Some of the foods that were originally from rainforests around the world include cashew nuts, Brazil nuts, Macadamia nuts, bananas, plantains, pineapple, cucumber, cocoa (chocolate), coffee, tea, avocados, papaya, guava, mango, cassava (a starchy root), tapioca, yams, sweet potato, okra, cinnamon, vanilla, nutmeg, mace, ginger, cayenne pepper, cloves, oranges, grapefruit, lemons, limes, passion fruit, peanuts, rice, sugar cane, and coconuts (mostly from coastal areas).People Living in Tropical RainforestsThere are many indigenous groups of people who have live in the tropical rainforests. Many of these groups, like the Yanomamo tribe of the Amazon rainforests of Brazil and southern Venezuela, have lived in scattered villages in the rainforests forhundreds or thousands of years. These tribes get their food, clothing, and housing mainly from materials they obtain in the forests.Forest people are mostly hunter-gatherers; they get their food by hunting for meat (and fishing for fish) and gathering edible plants, like starchy roots and fruit. Many also have small gardens in cleared areas of the forest. Since the soil in the rainforest is so poor, the garden areas must be moved after just a few years, and another part of the forest is cleared. Most indigenous populations are declining. There are many reasons for this. Their primary problems are disease (like smallpox an d measles, which were inadvertently introduced by Europeans) and governmental land seizure.Step III Why are rainforests important?Students are giv en seven minutes to read through the article. Then deal with the post-reading questions together. Before the self test, students are asked to go over the reading strategies for completing texts with sentence gaps.Deal with Ex1.Students are asked to read the text quickly and try to grasp the main idea and finish the gaps with the given sentences. 2019-2020新课堂英语选修八北师大版讲义:Unit 24-1 Word版含答案
More Money,More Smiles?Money can't buy happiness, right? Well, not true.According to a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, over the past few years, new research has given us a much deeper understanding of the relationship between what we earn and how we feel. The results may seem a bit obvious: Yes,people with higher incomes are, broadly speaking, happier than those who struggle to get by.But the research also shows you have to spend strategically if you expect those bank notes to put a smile on your face. Here are some ways to better spend your money:1.In a recently published study,Ryan Howell, associate professor of psychology at San Francisco State University in the US,found that when people don't have much money to spare, they tend to stick to material goods.“People think that experiences are only going to provide temporary happiness,”he told The Wall Street Journal in an interview.“...but they actually provide both more happiness and more lasting value.”2.No matter how much money you spend on something and how special that product is,you will get used to having it over time and it will become just another object.People adapt to having new stuff, and anything that disrupts1 that adaptation is likely to prolong2 happiness, says an Atlantic article.Buying small things can give us frequent small pleasures that are different each time they occur,as they forestall3 adaptation.3.Elizabeth Dunn, associate professor of psychology at the University of British Columbia in Canada, found that in countries as diverse as Canada,South Africa and Uganda, giving away money consistently made people happier. This was even true when people were giving away even when they themselves were relatively poor.4.It's also important to consider how what you're buying will affect how you spend your time. For example, that big house in the suburbs may seem like a good idea, but according to TheWall Street Journal,a 2004 study by researchers from University of Zurich in Switzerland found that people with longer commutes4 reported lower overall life satisfaction, all other things being equal.Notes1.disrupt v.干扰2.prolong v.延长3.forestall v.领先4.commute n.通勤TaskChoose the suitable heading for each paragraph.(There is one extra answer you don't need.) Part I
Warm-up
What are most people working hard for?
In the consumer society, people are working hard to earn more money. When we earn more, we spend more. Because we spend more, we work even harder.
译文: 有时候,我们试图存储一些钱或者
把自己的钱换成不同的外汇以希望能赚 取更多的钱。
结构分析: 本句的主语是:we;谓语部分是:
try to deposit a little or change our money into different countries’ currencies。而句 中的介词短语 in the hope ...则在句中作 目的状语。在这个目的状语中,又包含 着一个同位语从句that we can make even more money,在句中解释前面的名词 hope的内容。
