writing college papers专四听写原文
writing college papers专四听写原文This is the VOA Special English Education Report.Today in our Foreign Student Series we discuss writing college papers. Writing a term paper, research paper or essay for a college class is a kind of academic writing. Academic writing among professionals is a way to create new knowledge.A professor assigns students to write a paper. The students examine an issue, review what is already known, think about what they have learned and come to some conclusion.A student-writer must present information and also take a position This means that each student-writer must present information and also take a position. The student might support an idea, question it or even disprove it. Or the writer could show how the subject may be understood better or in a different way than it has been. And the student must support the position with evidence.Cultural differences may interfere when international students try to write this way. Writing teachers say students in many countries have learned to write beautiful descriptions about something without ever stating the main idea. American college students are expected to state their main idea at the beginning of the paper. In other cultures, paragraphs may be organized to build toward the main idea, which is revealed at the end. But in the United States, the main idea of each paragraph should be in the first sentence. Another difference is about writing style. Other cultures may use lots of descriptive words. But American English values short, strong sentences.Teachers at the writing center at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana work with students to improve their writing. Graduate tutor Lars So derlund says non-native English speakers generally have some trouble with English grammar. He says their sentences may be too long. Or they incorrectly use articles such as a, an and the. He also says non-native speakers generally use too much emotional language and give too many details before getting to the main idea. The associate director of the writing center, Tammi Conard-Salvo, says international students should look online for materials that explain the kind of writing they will be required to do. They should ask their professors for help. Most colleges have a writing center where they can get free individual help with their work.Links to writing center materials can be found on our Web site, . 例如:2011环境污染;2010:一个火锅——多种文化*2012重点预测正面What the image is trying to express is symbolic and philosophic ! Featured in the above illustration are large numbers of people who , sitting in front of computer , are placed in separate rooms . However ridiculous and humorous it may seem at first glimpse, this cartoon does carry rather significant implications .Evidently, the cartoonist aims to enlighten us that we should keep a balance between interenet communication and face-to-face .A great deal of attention is being paid today to internet . Indeed , it has long been know that using the internet in a proper way should be great emphasized ,if we want to construct a harmonious word . to our disappointment , however ,with an ever-developing of science and technology ,people in mounting numbers tend to neglect the seriousness of this problem . hence people’s emotional distance in becoming larger and larger .keeping a balance between internet communication and face-to-face , to my mind , is not simply good for individuals , but also beneficial to the whole society . Hence a widespread education campaign should be launched so as to enhance people’s awareness of the importance of using internet in a proper way .Only by concerted efforts , can we embrace a happy , healthy and harmonious world , as we all wish , in the long run !一种事物或现象(正面意义倾向)(第一段黄色为:is a hot pot, which is a symbol of the world.二三段的中心词换为:cultural communication)第一段:套话+图片描述+套话What the drawing is trying to express is symbolic and philosophic ! Communications Channel Analogy
• Good communications require:
– In “broadcast” scenario, use of cheap receivers, but expensive transmitter – i.e. writer must make effort so work of reader is easy – Transmitter use wavelength, protocol, etc. suitable to receiver – i.e. writer must use conventions which reader expects – Transmission method must take into account limitations of media, and receivers

• Same results may not be published twice!
– Published = in journal, book. – Conference proceedings is a gray area – are they published? – Minor overlap to improve clarity and completeness OK
• But should be clear, via reference, what is old and what is new
• Don‟t submit same material to two different journals at same time
– It is OK to submit paper rejected by one journal to another
