课后阅读作业一Module 1Period 1Ⅰ. 阅读理解A(2016·四川高考) In the depths of the French Guianese rainforest, there still remain unusual groups of indigenous(土著的)people. Surprisingly, these people live largely by their own laws and their own social customs. And yet, people in this area are in fact French citizens because it has been a colony(殖民地)of the French Republic since 1946. In theory, they should live by the French law. However, their remote locations mean that the French law is often ignored or unknown, thus making them into an interesting area of“lawlessness”in the world. The lives of these people have finally been recorded thanks to the efforts of a Frenchman from Paris called Gin. Gin spent five months in early 2015 exploring the most remote corners of this area, which sits on the edge of the Amazon rainforest, with half its population of only 250, 000 living in its capital, Cayenne.“I have a special love for the French Guianese people. I hav e worked there on and off for almost ten years, ”says Gin. “I’ve been able to keep firm friendships with them. Thus I have been allowed to gain access to their living environment. I don’t see it as a lawless land. But rather I seeit as an area of freedom. ”“I wanted to show the audience a photographic record touching upon the uncivilized life, ”continues Gin. “I prefer to work in black and white, which allows me to show different specific worlds more clearly. ”His black-and-white pictures present a world almost lost in time. These pictures show people seemingly pushed into a world that they were unprepared for. These local citizens now have to balance their traditional self-supporting hunting lifestyle with the lifestyle offered by the modern French Republic, which brings withitnot only necessary state welfare, but also alcoholism, betrayal and even suicide.【语篇概述】本文是一篇说明文, 文章介绍了法属圭亚那雨林地区的土著居民的生活。

The moon is so far from the earth that even if huge trees were growing on themountains, and elephants were walking about, we could not see them through the most powerful telescopes which have ever been invented.这个长句的主干就是The moon is far from the earth,其他部分,如状语从句、定语从句等,都是为突出主题服务的。

Kong Zi,also called Confucius(551—479 B.C.),and Socrates(469—399 B.C.)lived only a hundred years apart.During their lifetimes there was no contact between China and Greece, but it is interesting to look at how the world that each of these great philosophers came from shaped their ideas, and how these ideas in turn, shaped their societies.Neither philosopher lived in times of peace, though there were more wars in Greece than in China. The Chinese states were very large and feudal, while the Greek city-states were small and urban. The urban environment in which Socrates livedallowed him to be more radical(激进的)than Confucius.Unlike Confucius,Socrates was not asked by rulers how to govern effectively. Thus,Socrates was able to be more idealistic, focusing on issues like freedom, and knowledge for its ownsake.Confucius,on the other hand, advised those in government service, and many of his students went on to government service.Confucius suggested the Golden Rule as a principle for the conduct of life.“Do not do to others what you would not want others to do to you.” He assumed that all men were equal at birth, though some had more potential than others, and that it was knowledge that set men apart.Socrates focused on the individual, and thought that the greatest purpose of man was to seek wisdom. He believed that some had more potential to develop their reason than others did.Like Confucius, hebelieved that the superior class should rule the inferior(下层的) classes. For Socrates, the family was of no importance, and thecommunity of little concern. For Confucius, however, the family was the centre of society, with family relations considered much more important than political relations. Both men are respected much more today than they were in their lifetimes.1. Which of the following is TRUE according to the first paragraph?A.Socrates and Confucius had much in common.B.Confucius had much influence on Socrates’ ideas.C.The societies were influenced by the philosophe rs’ ideas.D.There were cultural exchanges between China and Greece.2. Your house may have an effect on your figure.Experts say the way you design your home could play a role inwhether you pack on the pounds or keep them off.You can make your environment work for you instead of againstyou. Here are some ways to turn your home into part ofyour diet plan.Open the curtains and turn up the lights.Dark environments are more likely to encourage overeating, for people are often less self-conscious(难为情) when they’re in poorly lit places — and so more likely to eat lots of food.If your home doesn’t have enough window light, get more lamps and floodthe place with brightness.Mind the colors.Research suggests warm colors fuel our appetites. In one study, people who ate meals in a blue room consumed 33 percent less than those in a yellow or red room.Warm colors like yellow make food appear moreappetizing, while cold colors make us feel less hungry. So when it’s time to repaint,go blue.Don’t forget the clock — or the radio.People who eat slowly tend to consume about 70 fewer calories(卡路里)per meal than those who rush through their meals.Begin keeping trackof the time, and try to make dinner last at least 30minu tes.And while you’re at it,actually sit down to eat.If you need some help slowing down, turn on relaxing music. It makes you less likely to rush through a meal.Downsize the dishes.Big serving bowls and plates can easily make us fat.We eat about 22 percent more when using a12-inch plate instead of a 10-inch plate. When we choose a large spoon over a smaller one, total intake(摄入) jumps by14 percent. And we’ll pour about 30 percent more liquid intoa short, wide glass than a tall, skinny glass.1. 专项训练:M2 阅读理解专练AIn Canada and the United States, there is a new group of childrencalled “satellite kids”, who live in one place but whose parents live inanother place.Asians are immigrating(移民)to Canada and the Uni ted States inlarger numbers than ever before. Most Asians immigrate because theybelieve that they can give their children a better education in the West.In Asia, especially in China and Japan, it is difficult to go to university. Students must first pass the strict national examination. However, in Canada and the United States, it is easy to go to university, and anyone who wants to go can go. As a result, Asian parents decide to leave thei r countries so that their children can go to university. The problem is that when Asians arrive, they discover that finding a job and making money are more difficult in the West than in the East. Also, they find that they are very lonely, and that they miss their homes. Because of these two reasons, most Asian parents decide to go back to work while their children stud y in the West. Therefore, these children become “satellite kids”, and most of their parents do not know how sad it is to be a “satellite kid”.Only until now are Canadians and Americans discovering the “satellite kids” problem. Because these children do not speak English and because their parents are not there to take care of them, they are often absent from school. To be a “satellite kid” means growing up in a country where you know you are different and where you cannot make friends because you do not speak English well. Also, it means growing up lonely, because your parents are elsewhere. What these “satellite kids” will probably say to their parents is that it’s better to have parents around than to have a university education.1. Why do some Asian parents send their kids abroad?A. They hope their children may easily find a job there.B. The kids want to improve their English and make foreign friends.C. The kids may not be accepted by universities in their own countries.D. All foreign universities are better than the ones in their own countries.2. “Satellite kids” refer to Asian kids.A. without parentsB. living abroad aloneC. with university educationD. who don’t speak English3. Some Asian immigrant children become“satellite kids”because their parents.A. want them to be independentB. want them to go to universityC. return to their countries to workD. want to leave their own countries4. What is the main idea of the passage?A. Parents feel lonely and miss their families.B. Parents want better education for their kids.C. Kids in foreign countries alone are badly in need of care from family.D. Canadians and Americans begin to notice the “satellite kids” problem.BYou probably know you should say “please” and “thank you”at restaurants. You probably know the rules of a library. You knowyou should respect and be nice to your classmates. But do you havemusic manners?Keep It Down! You have to notice the volume of your music. You should not play your music so loud that everyone around youcan hear it. Some people might even get angry. Usually, when you play the music loud on an MP3 player, other people can’t hear the words of the song. They just hear a loud sound. No one wants to listen to this. Very loud music can also be bad for your ears. So even if you are alone when listening to your MP3 player, you shouldn’t turn it up too high.Take Them Off! You need to know when to turn off your MP3 and put it away.Libraries and schools don’t allow MP3 players. There are other places, like museums, that don’t have rules, but it would be rude to have your MP3 player on. Sometimes, it doesn’t make sense to listen to your MP3 player at event. Why would you listen to music at a play, a movie or a sporting event? You would miss what is going on and others would wonder why you even came.Take One Out! Once in a while it’s oka y just to take out one earphone and not the other. Imagine you are listening to your MP3 player when someone asks you the way. It would not be rude to take out one earphone, tell him the way, and put back the earphone and continue listening. You can also do this when you order food at a fast-food restaurant or when you answer the telephone and it’s not for you. It’s Your Choice! The re are times when you need to decide what is best. For example, some people can listen to music on their MP3 players when reading books, while others think it is disturbing. In cases like this, you need to do what seems right for you.5. The underlined word “volume” in Paragraph 2 probably means“”.A. the type of musicB. the length of a songC. the amount of a soundD. the colour of an MP3 player6. We should turn down the music when we are alone because loud music.A. is not enjoyableB. hurts our earsC. is bad for MP3 playersD. makes us tired7. We can take one earphone out when we.A. have dinner with our parentsB. talk to friends on the phoneC. watch a sporting eventD. show others the way9. What can be the best title of this passage?A.
