成人学士学位英语考试模拟试卷4Part I Reading ComprehensionPassage 1Languages are marvelously complex and wonderfully complicated organs of culture: they embody the quickest and the most efficient means of communicating within their respective culture. To learn a foreign language is to learn another culture. In the words of a poet and philosopher, “As many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives.” A culture and its languages are as inseparable as brain and body; while one is a part of the other, neither can function without the other. In learning a foreign language, the best beginning is with the non-verbal linguistic elements of the language, its gestures, its body language. Eye contact is extremely important in English. Direct eye contact leads to understanding, or, as the English maxim has it, seeing eye-to-eye. We can never see eye-to-eye with a native speaker of English until we have learned to look directly into his eyes.1. The best title for this passage is________.A. Organs of CultureB. Brain and BodyC. Seeing Eye-to-EyeD. Non-Verbal Linguistic Elements2. According to this passage, the best way to learn a foreign language is_____.A. to read the works of poets and philosophersB. to find a native speaker and look directly into his eyesC. to begin by learning its body languageD. to visit a country where English is spoken3. According to this passage, gestures are __________.A. non-verbal as well as non-linguisticB. verbal and linguisticC. non-verbal but nevertheless linguisticD. verbal but nevertheless non-linguistic4. “As many languages as one speaks, so many lives one lives.” means_____.A. “If one learns many foreign languages, one will have a better understanding of his own language.”B. “Life is richer and more interesting if one knows several languages.”C. “No matter how many languages one knows, one can never know more than one's own culture.”D. “If a person speaks only one language, he will live a very happy life.”5. What does the author imply but not state in the passage?A. To learn a foreign language is to learn a culture.B. A language cannot function without its particular culture.C. Seeing eye to eye is the best beginning of contact.D. Eye contact is impossible for a foreign and a native English.Passage 2Henry Ford was born in 1863 in the state of Michigan. He grew up on a farm but he did not want to become a farmer. He left school when he was sixteen. He wanted to make cars so he went to work as a mechanic. In 1896 Ford built his first car. This car was very different from the cars of today. For example, its wheels were bicycle wheels. In 1902 Ford built a car that won animportant race. This car was the fastest car that had ever been built. It went seventy miles per hour. By then Ford had enough money to start the Ford Motor Company. At this time cars cost a lot of money. Only very rich people bought cars. Ford had a dream. He wanted to build a car that many people could afford. Ford was sure that, if people could afford cars, they would buy them. He said, "Everybody wants to be somewhere he isn't.” Ford's plan was to make all his cars the same. Cars that are all the same take less time and less money to make. Then Ford could charge less money for these cars. In 1908 Ford produced his famous Model T Ford. The Model T sold for $ 850. This was much cheaper than other cars but still more than most people could pay. One day Ford visited a meat-packing factory. There he saw beef carcasses being moved from one worker to another. Each worker had a particular job to do when the beef carcasses reached him. Ford realized he could use this assembly line method to build cars. It took less than two hours to build a car on the assembly line. Before, it took fourteen hours. Ford was able to drop the price of the Model T to $ 265. Ford's dream had come true. The Model T was now a car that many people could afford. By 1927, when Ford stopped making the Model T, over 15 million of these cars had been sold.6. Henry Ford built _____________.A. the first car in AmericaB. the first bicycle in AmericaC. a car with bicycle wheelsD. the fastest car in 18967. Henry Ford's dream was ___________.A. to build a car many people would have enough money to buyB. to build a car people would be able to sell easilyC. to build a car that would win an important raceD. to build a car on the assembly line in a meat-packing factory8. Henry Ford started his own company__________.A. when he was a mechanicB. after he built his first carC. after his car won an important raceD. after he visited a meat-packing factory9. Ford first saw an assembly line ________.A. on a farm in MichiganB. at the Ford Motor CompanyC. when he worked as a mechanicD. at a meat-packing factory10. Ford then understood that the assembly line was ————.A. a good way only for meat-packingB. a good way to build modern carsC. a good way to sell cheap carsD. not good enough for car workersPassage 3Would you quit your Job if you didn't need the money? In a 1990 poll by the Gallup Organization, many people said quitting work was an important reason to be rich. Yet researchers find that work is one of life's chief satisfactions for people.Consider W. Berry Fowler. In 1979 Fowler started a tutoring company that became so successful he was able to sell out and retire in 1987—a multimillionaire at 40. He bought a 6 0-foot cabin cruiser and a house in Hawaii, and busied himself vacationing. But after five years of perpetual vacation, Fowler began to miss the challenges of work. So in 1992 he bought a fitness chain for children and now spends 75 hours a week immersed in balance sheets (资产负债表) and staff meetings. "My best days on the golf course weren't half as much fun as a good day at the office," he says.A job, studies show, is more than a paycheck. Doing something well can increaseconfidence and self-worth. When sociologist H. Ray Kaplan surveyed 139 lottery millionaires, he discovered 60 percent continued working at least a year after they'd won. If jobs are so important, wouldn't salary size be a gauge of job satisfaction? Americans think so. A survey conducted last year by Roper Starch Worldwide, Inc., found that almost 70 percent of the respondents said they would be happier if their families had twice as much household income. Yet studies show that job satisfaction comes less from how much people earn than from the challenge of their jobs and the control they are able to exert. Work that doesn't engage a person will never seem rewarding, no matter how lucrative it becomes.11. The reason why W. Berry Fowler sold out and retired in 1987 was most probably that___________.A. he considered his work too boring for him to bear any longerB. he was eager to spend his days on the golf courseC. he had become rich enough to enjoy the rest of his life without having to workD. he was too old to work in a tutoring company12. Studies show that ____________.A. people seldom work once they become millionairesB. people derive great satisfaction from the challenges of workC. people are bound to be happy if they receive a high salaryD. people regard difficult work as undesirable13. The word immersed (Para. 3), could best be replaced by __________.A. completely covered B totally exhaustedC. thoroughly soakedD. deeply absorbed14. Which of the following statements is TRUE?A. Fowler found working more enjoyable than vacationing.B. Less than half of the lottery millionaires missed the challenges of work.C. 30 percent of Americans disregarded salary size as important.D. Most people value their pay above anything else.15. It can be inferred from the passage that ___________.A. quitting work is a reflection of the fundamental human urge to be freeB. lucrative work is the only source of human satisfactionC. conquering tough work is a satisfying experienceD. seemingly rewarding work will never be lucrativePassage 4In communities north of Denver, residents are pitching in to help teachers and administrators as the Vrain school District tries to solve a $13.8 million budget shortage blamed in mismanagement. “We’re worried about our teachers and principals, and we really don’t want to lose them because of thi s.” One parent said. “If we can help ease their financial burden, we will.” Teachers are grateful, but know it may be years before the district is solvent(有偿付能力的负债的). They feel really good about the parent support, but they realize it’s impossible for them to solve this problem. The 22,000-student district discovered the shortage last month. “It’s extraordinary. N obody would have imagined something happening like this at this level.” said State Treasure Mike Coffman. Coffman and district officials last week agreed on a state emergency plan freeing up a $9.8 million loan that enabled the payroll to be met for 2,700 teachers and staff in time for the holidays. District officials also took $1.7 million from student-activityaccounts of 38 schools. At Coffman’s request, the District Attorney has begun investigating the district’s finances. Coffman says he wants to know whether district officials hid the budget shortage until after the November election, when voters approved a $212 million bond issue for schools. In Frederick, students’ parents are buying classroom supplies and offering to pay for groceries and utilities to keep first-year teachers and principals in their jobs. Some $36,000 has been raised in donations from Safeway. A Chevrolet dealership donated $10,000 and forgave the district’s $10,750 bill for renting the driver educating cars. IBM contributed 4,500 packs of paper. “We employ thousands of people in this community,” said Mitch Carson, a hospital chief executive, who helped raise funds. “We have children in the school, and we see how they could be affected.” At Creek High School, three students started a website that displays newspaper articles, district information and an email forum(论坛). “Rumors about what’s happening to the district are moving at lighting speed.” said a student. “We wanted to know the truth, and spread that around instead.”16. What has happened to the Vrain School District?A. A huge financial problem has arisen.B. Many schools there are mismanagedC. Lots of teachers in the district are planning to quitD. In the schools of ancient Greece and Rome, testing usually consisted of saying poetry aloud or giving speeches. In the European universities of the Middle Ages, students who were working for advanced degrees had to discuss questions in their field of study with people who had made special study of the subject. This custom exists today as part of the process of testing candidates for the doctor degree. Generally, however, modern examinations are written. The written examination, where all students are tested on the same question, was probably not known until the nineteenth century. Perhaps it came into existence with the great increase in population and the development of modem industry. A room full of candidates for a state examination, timed exactly by electric clocks and carefully watched over by managers, resembles a group of workers at an automobile factory. Generally, during examinations teachers and students are expected to act like machines. One type of test is sometimes called an “ objective” test. It is intended to deal with facts, not personal opinions. To make up an objective test the teacher writes a series of questions, each of which has only one correct answer. Along with each question the teacher writes the correct answer and also three statements that look like correct answers to students who have not learned the material properly.1.In the Middle Ages students( ).A.took objective testsB.specialized in one subjectC.were timed by electric clocksD.never wrote exams正确答案:D解析:细节题。

Where we live and how we live after we are born are important too. For instance, our genes influence how fat or thin we are. But our weight depends mainly upon how much we eat and how much exercise we get. In the same way, our skin color depends to a large extent upon how much sunshine we get. When summer arrives and light—colored people go to the beaches, some will tan darkly, some will tan lightly and few will not tan at all. Each one has inherited a different ability to tan, but the differences do not appear until the conditions are right. An outdoor man will soon become pale if he changes to an indoor job, while a desk clerk will take on tan after a short vacation in the sun. Sometimes people decide that being tanned is better than being pale. Sometimes they decide the opposite. Centuries ago, most of the people in Europe were peasants and they had to work in the fields all day. Noblemen, on the other hand, did not have to work. They stayed indoors and remained pale. You could always tell a nobleman from a peasant because a peasant had a tan. As a result, a shin so pale that the veins (血管) showed was considered a mark of great beauty. During the Industrial Revolution things changed. Farmers left their fields and went to work in factories, mines and mills. Working for long hours in dimly—lit factories and mines made their skins pale. (77) Wealthy people, however, could afford to travel so sunny countries. They had the leisure to lie around on the beaches and get tan. Having a tan became a sign of wealth. In Western Europe and North America pale skin is no longer desirable. Instead of bleaching themselves white with lemon juice, many women spend their time under a sun—lamp. The desire for a quick tan has led to the invention of pills and lotions (涂剂) that darken the skin artificially without exposure to sunlight. These pills and lotions can be bought by anyone at any drugstore. A rich man can spend hundreds of dollars on a vacation in the sunny West Indies and get his suntan there. But his lowest—paid clerk can have what looks like the same tan out of a bottle for a few cents.1.Besides genes, our skin color has much to do with ______.A.exerciseB.weightC.foodD.sunshine正确答案:D解析:本题考查的是考生对细节的把握,答案对应文章第一段,其中第一句是说:遗传不是唯一影响我们肤色的因素。

In many American universities the total work for a degree is made up of thirty-six courses each lasting for one term. Generally, a course is made up of three classes per week for fifteen weeks; while attending a university a student will probably attend four or five courses during each semester. Normally a student would expect to take four years attending two terms each year. It is possible to spread the period of work for the degree over a longer period. It is also possible for a student to move between one university and another during his degree course, though this is not done as a regular practice. For every course that follows a student is given a grade, which is recorded and available for the student to show to prospective employers. All this sets a constant pressure and strain of work, but in spite of this some students still find time for great activities in student affairs. The effective work of maintaining discipline is usually performed by students who advise the academic authorities. Any student who is thought to have broken the rules, for example, by cheating is to appear before a student court. With the large numbers of students, the operation of the system has something to do with a certain amount of activity. One day, science says a glass of red wine a day will help us live longer. The next day, maybe not. It seems journalists are pretty interested in wine research and the same might be said for coffee. Now, there´s been a lot of research into whether coffee is good for our health. "The results have really been mixed," admits Neal Freedman who led the coffee study and published his findings in a medical journal recently. "There´s been some evidence that coffee might increase the risk of certain diseases and there´s also been maybe more recent evidence that coffee may protect against other diseases as well."Freedman and his colleagues undertook the biggest study yet to look at the relationship between coffee and health. They analyzed data collected from more than 400,000 Americans ages 50 to 71 participating in the study. "We found that the coffee drinkers had a modestly lower risk of death than those no-drinkers," he said. Here´s what he means by "modestly" : those who drank at least two or three cups a day were about 10 percent or 15 percent less likely to die for any reason during the 13 years of the study. When the researchers looked at specific causes of death, coffee drinking appeared to cut the risk of dying from heart disease, lung disease, injuries, accidents and infections. Now, Freedman stressed that the study doesn´t prove coffee can make people live longer. A study like this can never prove a cause-and-effect relationship. All it can really do is to point researchers in the right direction for further investigation. And even if it turns out that coffee is really good for you, scientists have no idea why.第6题According to the first paragraph, reporters would like to, know the research findings of______.A.teaB.beerC.alcoholD.coffee第7题According to the passage, which of the following is TRUE?A.Freedman and his colleagues hired 400,000 Americans to collect data.B.About four hundred thousand Americans worked for Freedman´s team full time for 13 years.C.People who took part in Freedman´s research are about 50 to 70 years old.D.People who are 50 to 70 years old seldom drink coffee.第8题According to the author, scientists______.A.have already proved that coffee is good for human healthB.have a long way to go before they find a way to study coffeeC.have avoided the cause-and-effect approach to study coffeeD.are still unable to figure out why coffee is good for us第9题The word "mixed" in the first paragraph means "______".A.both good and badB.put togetherC.both sharp and softD.confuted第10题Which of the following is an appropriate title for this passage?A.Can Beer Help You Live Longer?B.Can Coffee Help You Live Longer?C.Can Wine Help You Live Longer?D.Can Tea Help You Live Longer?上一题下一题(11~15/共20题)Reading ComprehensionDirections: There are three passages in this part. There are not very many people who seriously read a newspaper every day. Most people read only the sports pages, the advice or the gossip columns, the comics, and perhaps the classified advertisements. Most people don´t take the time to read the real news. Newspaper editors say that their readers are lazy. They say they have to trick people into reading the news. They attempt to catch the reader´s interest with pictures and exciting headlines. These techniques are used on the front page because it is the first thing you see when you pick up the paper. The first page attracts attention and encourages the reader to look through the rest of the paper. This is why editors always look for a good first page story and headline to make them stop and look. If the headline is horrible enough or frightening enough or wild enough, perhaps they will go on to read the front page. However, they may just read the headlines, but that is all, then they turn to the sports page, or comics, or advertisements. It seems that people do not want the news from a newspaper anymore. They say they get the news on the television now. More people watch television news because it is easier and more interesting than reading a newspaper. What about you? Do you read news from a newspaper? Do you think it is easier to get the news from television? Or do you care about news at all? You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. The annual campaign to make Singapore´s three million people more polite ended yesterday and was immediately followed by another drive to get them to be punctual.Tardiness is not yet a criminal offence in the island republic, and the National Punctuality Working Committee can only use gentle persuasion. "Being on time means being considerate," said committee chairman Toh Weng Cheng. Previous drives made little headway in changing a deeply rooted habit that seems oddly out of place in this otherwise efficient city-state. Tardiness at dinner parties is usually attributed to Chinese tradition, a belief that older and more important guests were expected to make an entrance afterMeanwhile, officials will assess the results of the 15th annual courtesy campaign, a HK $ 2. 4 million drive to persuade Singaporeans to mind their manners. Earlier courtesy campaigns used posters, films, advertisements in newspapers and magazines to portray considerate behavior. The publicity this year stressed courtesy through examples of discourtesy. Few countries use elaborate public campaigns to change behavior and raise civic consciousness. It has been a way of life in Singapore for more than 30 years. Some, like the courtesy drive, deal with basic habits and culture.October was first declared "Speak Mandarin Month" in 1978, an effort to wipe out regional Chinese dialects in favor of the official tongue.Others focus on problems of the day. The police launched a drive in 1989 to stop abuse of the emergency phone number 999, because one call in five was of the nuisance or non-emergency variety. Some campaigns have been so successful that they have been reversed. Family planners urged parents to "Stop at Two" in 1978. Birth rates dropped from 3. 5 percent in 1960 to 1.2 percent in 1980, and families who can afford it are now encouraged to "Have Three or More". By the early 1980s, the growth of campaigns inspired one exhausted newspaper columnist to suggest a "take your campaigns seriously campaign".第16题In the passage, the word "tardiness" ( Line 1, Paragraph 2) most probably means______.A.punctualityB.impolitenessC.dishonestyteness第17题The courtesy drive was launched in Singapore to______.A.develop appropriate personal habitsB.stress the importance of punctualityC.make the people more politeD.urge the officials to be on time第18题When did the campaign to standardize spoken language begin?A.In 1960.B.In 1978.C.In 1980.D.In 1989.第19题Which of the following is NOT true?A.Singapore has always been a highly efficient country in every way.B.The campaigns are not always very effective in Singapore.C.Singapore does its best to make its people more polite.D.Not all the campaigns are launched every year.第20题Which of the following statements is not directly said but implied in the passage?A.All the campaigns are to improve people´s behavior.B.There are too many campaigns in Singapore.C.The more campaigns, the more efficient they are.D.Almost all campaigns in Singapore don´t amount to anything.上一题下一题(1/29)Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. was what the notice just inside the entrance promised. It said: “Remember, once a week, one of our customers gets free goods. This May Be Your Lucky Day!”For several weeks Mrs.Edwards hoped, like many of her friends, to be the lucky customer.Unlike her friends, she never gave up hoping. The cupboards in kitchen were full of things which she did not need. Her husband tried to advise her against buying things but failed. She dreamed of the day when the manager of the supermarket would approach her and say: “Madam, this is Your Lucky Day.Everything in your basket is free.”One Friday morning, after she had finished her shopping and had taken it to her car, she found that she had forgotten to buy any tea.She dashed back to the supermarket, got the tea and went towards the cash-desk.As she did so, she saw the manager of the supermarket approach her.“Madam,”he said, holding out his hand, “I want to congratulate you! is listed by the Guinness Book of Would Records as the world’s largest underground lake. The Lost Sea is part of an extensive and historic cave system called Craighead Caverns. The caverns have been known and used since the days of the Cherokee Indian nation. The cave expands into a series of huge rooms from a small opening on the side of the mountain.Approximately one mile from the entrance, in a room called “The Council Room,”many Indian artisfacts have been found. Some of the items discovered include pottery, arrowheads, weapons, and jewelry. For many years there were persistent rumors of a large underground lake somewhere in a cave, but it was not discovered until 1905.In that year, a thirteen-year-old boy named Ben Sands crawled through a small opening three hundred feet underground. He found himself in a large cave half filled with water.Today tourists visit the Lost Sea and ride far out onto it in glass-bottomed boats powered by electric motors.More than thirteen acres of water have been mapped out so far and still no end to the lake has been found.Even though teams of divers have tried to explore the Lost Sea, the full extent of it is still unknown.66.The Lost Sea is unique from the passage that the Craighead Caverns presently serve as ____.A.an underground testing siteB.an Indian meeting groundC.a tourist attractionD.a motor boat race coursePassage ThreeGenerations of Americans have been brought up to believe that a good breakfast is one life’s essentials.Eating breakfast at the start of the day, we have all been told, and told again, is as necessary as putting gasoline in the family car before starting a trip. But for many people the thought of food first thing in the morning is by no means a pleasure. So despite all the efforts, they still take no breakfast.Between 1977 and 1983, the latest year for which figures are available, the number of people who didn’t have breakfast, increased by 33 percent. For those who feel pain of guilt about not eating breakfast, however, there is some good news.Several studies in the last few years indicate that, for adults especially, there may be nothing wrong with omitting breakfast.“Going without breakfast does not affect performance,”said Arrold E.Bender, former professor of the nutrition at Queen Elizabeth College in London, “nor does giving people breakfast improve performance.”Scientific once taught college courses in nutrition in LondonPassage FourAbout 35% of all high school graduates in America continue their education in an institution of higher learning. The word college is used to refer to either a college or a university. These institutions offer four-year programs that lead to a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.) or Bachelor Science (B.S.) degree. Some students attend a junior college (providing only a two-year program) for one to two years before entering a four-year college as a sophomore (二年级生) or junior (三年级生).It is generally easier to be accepted at a state university than at a private one. Most private schools require strict entrance examinations and a high grade point average (GPA), as well as specific college prep classes in high school.Private schools cost considerably more than state colleges and famous private schools are very expensive.Poorer students can sometimes attend, however, by earning scholarships. Some college graduates go on to earn advanced masters or doctoral degrees in grad (graduate) school.Occupations in certain fields such as law or medicine require such advanced studies.Since college costs are very high, most students work at part-time jobs. Some have full-time jobs and go to school part-time.Often some will take five or more years to complete a four-year program because of money / job demands on their time. While the college and work demands take up the great part of a student’s time, most still enjoy social activities.Sports, dances, clubs, movies, and plays are all very popular. However, gathering together for long, philosophical talks at a favorite meeting place on or near the university is probably the most popular activity.76.College education is _______ in America.A.quite commonB.very rareC.something difficultD.almost Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center. In sport the sexes are separate. (76) Women and men do not run or swim in the same races. Women are less strong than men. That at least is what people say. Women arc called” the weaker sex” ,or, if men want to please them, “the fair sex”. But boys and girls are taught together at schools and universities. There are women who are famous Prime Ministers, scientists and writers. And women live longer than men. A European woman can expect to live until the age of 74, a man only until he is 68.Are women’s bodies really weaker? The fastest men can run a mile in 4 minutes. The best women need 4. 5 minutes. Women’s speeds are always slower than men’s, but some facts are surprising. Some of the fastest women swimmers today are teenage girls. One of them swam 400 metres in 4 minutes 21. 2 seconds when she was only 16.The first “Tarzan” in films was an Olympic swimmer, Johnny Weissmuller. His fastest 400 metres was 4 minutes 59. 1 seconds, which is 37. 9 seconds slower than a girl 50 years later! This does not mean that women are catching men up. Conditions are very different now, and sport is much more serious. It is so serious that some women athletes are given hormone(荷尔蒙) injections. At the Olympics a doctor has to check whether the women athletes are really women or not. It seems sad that sport has such problem. Life can be very complicated when there are two separate sexes!16.Women are called “the weaker sex” because________.A.women do as much work as menB.people tilde women are weaker than menC.sport is easier for men than for womenD.in sport the two sexes are always together正确答案:B解析:事实细节题。

For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and blacken the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:The reflective towers of New York City, which is on the Atlantic migrating (迁徙的)route , can be deadly for birds. “We live in an age of glass,” said urel, an architect. (76)“It can be a perfect mirror in certain lights, and the larger the glass, the more dangerous it is." About 90,000 birds are killed by flying into building in €feic, itheysirikeyhailower levels of glass towers after searching for food in nearby parks. Such crashes are the second-leading cause of death for migrating birds, after habitat (栖息地)loss, with an estimated number of death ranging up to a billion a year.(77)As glass office and171' apartment towers have increased in the last decade, so, too, have calls to make them less deadly to birds. San Francisco adopted bird-safety standard for new building in July. The United States Green Building Council, a nonprofit industry group that encourages the creation of environmentally conscious buildings, will introduce a bird-safety credit this as part of its environmental certification process. There are no easy fixes, however. A few researchers are exploring glass designs that use ultraviole t 紫夕卜线的)signals, but they are still in their infancy. Covers, dot patterns, shades and net are the main options available.Often, only one section of a building needs to be changed. “You don't necessarily have to treat every window r urel said. “It would be too expensive to do the whole building.” The Jacob Convention Center, which has been undergoing alterations, is the most recent building to voluntarily correct the problem of bird crashes. The architects used less reflective glass and dot patterns.1.What is the main idea of the passage?A.New York is a city of glass towers.B.Glass tower are dangerous for migrating birds.C.New York adopted new safety standards for buildings.D.Glass towers are a new trend in the United States.2.What is the number one cause of death for migrating birds?A. The current 18-year-olds, after all, were 8 when Google was founded by two students at Stanford; Mark Zuckerberg founded Facebook in 2004 while he was Harvard and they were entering high school. Having grown up digital (数字的),they are impatient to get on with life. The easiest way to find kids like these is to check in on entrepreneurship (企业家才能)education, in which colleges and universities try to prepare their students to recognize opportunities and seize them.A report published last year by the Kauffman Foundation, which finances programs to promote innovation on campuses, noted that more than 50,000 entrepreneurship programs are offered on two-and four-year campuses —up from just 250 courses in 1985. Lesa Mitchell , aKauffman vice president, says that the foundation is extending the reach of its academic influence, which used to be found only in business schools. Now, the concept of entrepreneurship is blooming in engineering programs and medical school, and even in the liberal arts. “Our interest is the programs,” she says. “We need to spread out from the business school.”Either as class projects or on their own, students in a variety of majors are coming up with ideas, writing business plans and seeing them through to prototype and, often, market. In their spare time, students in agricultural economics at Purdue invent new uses for bean; industrial design majors at Syracuse, in a special laboratory, create wearable technologies.(78)The entrepreneurship movement has its critics, especially among those who see college as a time for extensive academic exploration. “I just don't think that entrepreneurship ranks so high in terms of national need,” says Daniel S.Greenberg, author of Science for sale: The perils, Rewards and Delusions of Campus Capitalism.Leonard A.Schlesinger, Babson College's president, says that he question of whether innovation can really be taught is “an age-old argument”.6.When Google and Facebook were established, the founders were still.A. in high schoolB. in the armyC. in primary schoolD. at college7.According to the passage, what is the main purpose of entrepreneurship education?A.To prepare students for future academic lifeB.To prepare students to find opportunities and seize them.C.To prepare students for overseas career.D.To prepare student to develop interpersonal skills.8.The word “prototype” in the fourth paragraph is most likely to mean.A. modelB. strategyC. methodD. stage9.What does Daniel S.Grennberg think of entrepreneurship education?A.Entrepreneurship, or at least certain elements of it, can be taught.B.An entrepreneurship program can help students find what they really like and entrepreneurship isn't all about business.C.Entrepreneurship should be spread across different fields.D. Colleges shouldn't put too much emphasis on entrepreneurship programs.10.What is the main idea of the passage?A.Entrepreneurship courses in business schools.B.Qualities of an entrepreneur.C.Entrepreneurship education in colleges.D.Kids in the information age.Passage 3Question 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:Regret is as common an emotion as love or fear, and it can be nearly as powerful. So, in a new paper, two researchers set about trying to find out what the typical American regrets most. In telephone surveys, Neal Rose, a psychologist and professor of marketing at the School of Management at Northwestern University, and Mike Morrison, a doctoral candidate in psychology at University of Illinois, asked 370 Americans, aged 19 to 103,to talk about their most notable regret .Participants were asked what the regret was, when it happened, whether it was a result of something they did or didn't do, and whether it was something that could still be fixed. The most commonly mentioned regret involved romance (浪漫的事)(18%) -------------- l ost loves or unfulfilled relationships. Family regrets came in second (16%), whit people still feeling badly about being unkind to their brothers or sisters in childhood. Other frequently reported regrets involved career (13%),education (12%), money (10%) and parenting (9A%).Rose and Morrison's study, which is to be published in Social Psychological and Personality Science, is significant in that it surveyed a wide range of the American public, including people of all ages and socio-economic and educational backgrounds. Previous studies on regret have focused largely on college students, who predictably tend to have education-focused regrets, like wishing they had studied harder or a different major. The new survey shows that in the larger population, a person's “li fe circumstances-accomplishments, shortcomings, situation in life—inject considerable fuel into the fires of reg ret,” the authors write.E.9) People with less education, for instance were more likely to report education regret. People with higher levels of education had the most career regrets. And those with no romantic partner tended to hold regrets regarding love.Broken down (分解、细分)by sex, more women (44%) than men (19%) had regrets about love and family-not surprising, sincewomen “value social relationships more than men,” the authors write. In contrast ,men (34%) were more likely than women (27%) to mention work-related regrets, wishing they'd chosen a different career path, for instance ,or followed their passion. (80) Many participants also reported wishing they had worked less to spend more time with their children. There was an even split between regrets about inaction (not doing something) and action (do something you wish you didn't) . But, like previous studies, the current research found that some regrets are more likely than others to persist over time: people tend to hang on longer to the regret of inaction; meanwhile, regrets of action tend to be more recent.11.In the second paragraph, the author shows.A. the researchers' findingsB. the importance of familyC. the importance of moneyD. the importance of career12.According to the passage, college student participants mainly had regrets about their.A. family and childhoodB. study and majorC. career and jobD. romance and fear13.The word “notable” in the first paragraph is closest in meaning to.A. commonB. capableC. wonderfulD. remarkable14.Which of the following statements is TRUE?A.The less education he or she has, the more regrets she or he would have.B.The more education he or she has, the less regrets she or he would have.C.More women than men had regrets about love and family.D.The regret of action seems to last longer than that of inaction.15.What is the main idea of this passage?A.How regret is understood by a typical American.B .Common regrets is more important than love and hate.C.Why regret is more important than love and hate.D.How regret has shaped Americans.PartII Vocabulary and Structure (30%)Directions: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. Already today, less than forty years later, as computers are relieving us of more and more of the routine tasks in businessand in our personal lives, we are faced with a less dramatic but also less foreseen problem. People tendto be over-trusting of computers and are reluctant to challenge their authority. Indeed, they behaveas if they were hardly aware that wrong buttons may be pushed, or that a computer may simply malfunction.Obviously, there would be no point in investing in a computer if you had to check all its answers, but people should also rely on their own internal computers and check the machine when they have the feeling that something has gone awry. Questioning and routine double checks must continue to be as much a part of good business as they were in pre-computer days. Maybe each computer should come with the following warning: for all the help this computer may provide, it should not be seen as a substitute for fundamental thinking and reasoning skills.21.What is the main purpose of this passage?A. To look back to the early days of computers.B. To explain what technical problems may occur with computers?C. To discourage unnecessary investment in computers.D. To warn against a mentally lazy attitude towards computers.22. According to the passage, initial concerns about computers were that they might_____A. lead us into the post-war eraB. be quite widespreadC. take controlD. take over routine tasks23. The passage recommends those dealing with computers to_____A. be reasonably skeptical abort themB. check all their answersC. substitute them for basic thinkingD. use them for business purposes only24.An “internal computer” is_____A. a computer uses exclusively by one company for its own problemsB. a person’s store of knowledge and the ability to process itC. the most up-to-date in-house computer a company can buyD. a computer from the post-war era which is very reliable25.The passage suggests that the present-day problem with regard to computers is_____A. challengingB. psychologicalC. dramaticD. malfunctioningPassage FourSeveral recent studies have found that being randomly (随机地) assigned to a roommate of another race can lead to increased tolerance but also to a greater likelihood (可能性)of conflict.Recent reports found that lodging with a student of a different race may decrease prejudice and compel students to engage in more ethnically diverse friendships. An Ohio State University study also found that black students living with a white roommate saw higher academic success throughout their college careers. Researchers believe this may be caused by social pressure. In a New York Times article, Sam Boakye – the only black student on his freshman year floor -said that "if you're surrounded by whites, you have something to prove."Researchers also observed problems resulting from pairing interracial students in residences.According to two recent studies, randomly assigned roommates of different races are more likely to experience conflicts so strained that one roommate will move out.An Indiana University study found that interracial roommates were three times as likely as two whiteroommates to no longer live together by the end of the semester.Grace Kao, a professor at Penn said she was not surprised by the findings. "This may be the first time that some of these students have interacted, and lived, with someone of a different race," she said.At Penn, students are not asked to indicate race when applying for housing."One of the great things about freshman housing is that, with some exceptions, the process throws you together randomly," said Undergraduate Assembly chairman Alec Webley. "This is the definition of integration.""I've experienced roommate conflicts between interracial students that have both broken down stereotypes and reinforced stereotypes," said one Penn resident advisor (RA). The RA of two years added that while some conflicts "provided more multicultural acceptance and melding (融合)," there were also "jarring cultural confrontations."The RA said that these conflicts have also occurred among roommates of the same race.Kao said she cautions against forming any generalizations based on any one of the studies, noting that more background characteristics of the students need to be studied and explained.26. What can we learn from some recent studies?A)Conflicts between students of different races are unavoidable.B)Students of different races are prejudiced against each other.C)Interracial lodging does more harm than good.D)Interracial lodging may have diverse outcomes.27. What does Sam Boakye's remark mean?A)White students tend to look down upon their black peers.B)Black students can compete with their white peers academically.C)Black students feel somewhat embarrassed among white peers during the freshman year.D)Being surrounded by white peers motivates a black student to work harder to succeed.28. What does the Indiana University study show?A)Interracial roommates are more likely to fall out.B)Few white students like sharing a room with a black peer.C)Roommates of different races just don't get along.D)Assigning students' lodging randomly is not a good policy.29. What does Alec Webley consider to be the "definition of integration"?A)Students of different races are required to share a room.B)Interracial lodging is arranged by the school for freshmen.C)Lodging is assigned to students of different races without exception.D)The school randomly assigns roommates without regard to race.30. What does Grace Kao say about interracial lodging?A. It is unscientific to make generalizations about it without further study.B. Schools should be cautious when making decisions about student lodging.C. Students' racial background should be considered before lodging is assigned.D. Experienced resident advisors should be assigned to handle the problems.Part Ⅲ Vocabulary and Structure (10 minutes, 10 points)Directions: There are 20 incomplete sentences in this section .For each sentence there are 4 choices marked A, B , C and D .Choose the one that best completes the sentence. 山东成人高等教育学士学位英语考试全真模拟试题山东成人高等教育学士学位英语考试全真模拟试题Part I Reading Comprehension (40%)Directions: There are four passages in this part. Each passage is followed by some questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choices marked A, B, C and D. You should decide on the best choice and mark the corresponding letter on the Answer Sheet with a single line through the center.Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:How often one hears children wishing they were grown up, and old people wishing they were young again. Each age has its pleasures and its pains, and the happiest person is the one who enjoys what each age gives him without wasting his time in useless regrets.Childhood is a time when there are few responsibilities to make life difficult. If a child has good parents, he is fed, looked after and loved, whatever he may do. It is impossible that he will ever again in his life be given so much without having to do anything in return. In addition, life is always presenting new things to the child —things that have lost their interest for older people because they are too well-known. But a child has his pains: he is not so free to do what he wishes to do; he is continually being told not to do things, or being punished for what he has done wrong. When the young man starts to earn his own living, he can no longer expect others to pay for his food, his clothes, and his room, but has to work if he wants to live comfortably. If he spends most of his time playing about in the way that he used to as a child, hewill go hungry. And if he breaks the laws of society as he used to break the laws of his parents, he may go to prison. If, however, he works hard, keeps out of trouble and has good health, he can have the great happiness of building up for himself his own position in society.1. According to Paragraph 2, the writer thinks that _______.A. life for a child is comparatively easyB. a child is always loved whatever he doesC. if much is given to a child, he must do something in returnD. only children are interested in life2. After a child grows up, he_____.A. will have little time playingB. has to be successful in finding a jobC. can still ask for help in time of troubleD. should be able to take care of himself3. Which of the following statements is NOT true according to the passage?A. People are often satisfied with their life.B. Life is less interesting for old people.C. Adults are freer to do what they want to do.D. Adults should no longer rely on others.4. The main idea of the passage is that ______.A. life is not enjoyable since each age has some painsB. young men can have the greatest happiness if they work hardC. childhood is the most enjoyable time in one’s lifeD. one is the happiest if he can make good use of each age in his life5. The paragraph following the passage will most probably discuss ______.A. examples of successful young menB. how to build up one’s position in soc ietyC. joys and pains of old peopleD. what to do when one has problems in lifePassage 2Questions 6 to 10 are based on the following passage:Every country tends to accept its own way of life as being the normal one and to praise or criticize others as they are similar to or different from it. And unfortunately, our picture of the people and the way of life of other countries is often a distorted (曲解) one. Here is a great argument in favor of foreign travel and learning foreign languages. It is only by traveling in, or living in a county and getting toknow its inhabitants and their language that one can find out what a country and its people are really like. And how different the knowledge one gains this way frequently turns out to be true from the second-hand information gathered from other sources! How often we find that the foreigners whom we thought to be such different people from ourselves are not very different after all!Differences between peoples do of course, exist and, one hopes, will always continue to do so. The world will be a dull place indeed when all the different nationalities behave exactly alike, and some people might say that we are rapidly approaching this state of affairs. With the much greater rapidity and ease of travel, there might seem to be some truth in this at least as far as Europe is concerned. However this may be, at least the greater ease of travel today has revealed to more people than ever before that the Englishman or Frenchman or German is not some differentkind of animal from themselves.6. Every country criticizes ways of life in other countries because they are _______.A. distortedB. normalC. similar to each otherD. different from its own7. One who travels in a foreign country and learns its language will ______.A. find out what its people are likeB. argue in favor of this country and the languageC. know the country and its people betterD. like its inhabitants and their language8. The knowledge one gains by traveling in a foreign county is often _______.A. from second-hand informationB. gathered from other sources than from its inhabitantsC. gained from the arguments about the countryD. different from what one had before the travel9. Differences between peoples ________.A. will gradually disappear because of ease of travelB. do exist even though different nationalities behave exactly alikeC. will always continue to exist and the world will be a dull placeD. will not exist as one hopes10. The underlined word “However”most probably means _________.A. somewhatB. by whatever meansC. anyhowD. no matter whatPassage 3Questions 11 to 15 are based on the following passage:We arranged that Kissinger would fly to Vietnam for talks early in July and then stop in Pakistan on the way back. There he would develop a stomachache that would require him to stay in bed and not be seen bythe press. Then, with President Yahya’s cooperation he would be taken to an airport where a Pakistan plane would fly him over the mountains to China.Kissinger’s trip was giv en the code(密码) name Polo after Marco Polo, another Western traveler who made history by journeying to China. Everything went without a hitch. His slight illness in Islamabad received only minor attention from reporters covering him. They accepted the story that he would be confined to bed for at least a couple of days and began making arrangements for their own entertainment. Because of the need for complete secrecy and the lack of any direct communication facilities between Beijing and Washington, I knew that we would have no word from Kissinger while he was in China. Even after he had returned to Pakistan it would still be important to maintain secrecy. So before Kissinger left, we agreed on a single code word —Eureka -which he would use if his mission were successful. On July 11, Al Haig, who knew our code word, phoned me to say that a cable from Kissinger had arrived.“What’s the message?”I asked.“Eureka,”he replied.11. Kissinger stopped in Pakistan because ______.A. he happened to have a stomachacheB. he needed a rest after a long journeyC. he had a secret mission to perform thereD. he did not want to be seen by the press12. The reporters in Islamabad believed that ______.A. Kissinger was not feeling wellB. Kissinger had just come back from VietnamC. Kissinger had put off leaving for ChinaD. Kissinger was preparing to entertain them13. The statement “everything went without a hitch”(Para.2) most probably means that ______.A. nothing was easy with the missionB. the plans were carried out with great difficultyC. things went smoothlyD. there was no possibility of success14. There was no news from Kissinger while he was in Beijing, chiefly because _______.A. his trip had to be kept secretB. President Yahya did not go with KissingerC. communication between Beijing and Islamabad was difficultD. the negotiation(谈判) was not successful15. The passage implies that Kissinger’s message “Eureka”was sent _______.A. when the negotiation started in BeijingB. as soon as he arrived in WashingtonC. when he flew to Vietnam on July 11D. when the negotiation was completed in BeijingPassage 4Questions 16 to 20 are based on the following passage:No country in the world has more daily newspapers than theU.S.A. There are almost 2,000 of them, as compared with 170 in Japan, 164 in Argentina and 111 in Britain. The quality of some American papers is extremely high and their views are quoted all over the world. Distinguished dailies like the Washington Post or the New York Times have a powerful influence all over the country. However the Post and the Times are not national newspapers in the sense that The times is in Britain or Le Monde is in France, since each American city has its own daily newspaper. The best of these present detailed accounts of national and international news, but many tend to limit themselves to state or city news.Like the press in most other countries, American newspapers range from the “sensational”, which feature crime, sex and rumor, to the serious, which focus on factual news and the analysis of world events. But with few exceptions American newspapers try to entertain as well as give information, for they have to compete with television.。

In other words, we do not educated children only for the aim of educating them. Our purpose is to fit them for life. Life is varied; so is education. In some countries with advanced industries, they have free education for all. Under this system, people, no matter rich or poor, clever or foolish, have a chance to be educated at universities or colleges. By free education for all they are expected to be able to solve all the problems of a society and build a perfect nation. But we can already see that free education for all is not enough. We find in such countries a farlarger number of people with university degree than there are jobs for them to fill. As a result, they refuse to do what they think is “low”work. In fact, to work with one’s hands is thought to be dirty and shameful in such countries. But, is the work of a completely uneducated farmer as important as that of a professor? We can live without education, but we should die if none of us grew crops. On the other hand, if all the farmers were completely uneducated, their production would remain low. As the population grows larger and larger in the modern world, we would die if we did not have enough food.1.What does the author mean to tell us in this article?A.The importance of free education for all in our society.B.Everyone should be educated so as to do various jobs.C.The advantages and disadvantages of free education.cation should fit people to varied life.2.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?A.Not everyone needs to be educated to do his job well.B.Free education for all has more disadvantages thanadvantages for the people and society.C.A proper education system is more important thaneducation itself.cation is so important that people can’t livewithout it.3.Which is NOT the result of free education?A.The more degrees people get, the fewer jobs they canfind.B.People with degrees often consider themselves superiorto others doing manual work.C.People with better education often refuse to dophysical work.D.Some people with degrees can’t find jobs they want.4.What does the expression “low work”mean in thepassage?A. work with low payB. work that is lessattractiveC. work that needs manual laborD. work with lessimportance5.What can be inferred from the passage?A.The purpose of education is to make people intelligentcitizens.B.Those who choose a job according to his ability cancontribute to the society.C.The system of free education for all doesn’t work inadvanced countries.D.Uneducated farmer are as important as professors inmodern society.Passage 2The science of meteorology(气象学) is concerned with the study of the structure, state, and behavior of the atmosphere. The subject may be approached from any vantage(优势) point. Different views must be combined to give perspective to the whole picture. One may consider the condition of the atmosphere at a given moment and attempt to predict changes from that condition over a period of a few hours to a few days ahead. This approach is covered by the branch of the science called synoptic (概要旳) meteorology.Synoptic meteorology is the scientific basis of the technique of weather forecasting by means of the preparation and analysis of weather maps and meteorological diagrams. In serving the needs of shipping, aviation(航空), agriculture, industry, and professional forecast advice, great benefits are obtained in the form of the savingof human lives and property and in economic advantages of various kinds. One important purpose of the science of meteorology is constantly to make great efforts, through study and research, to increase our knowledge of the atmosphere with the aim of improving the accuracy of weather forecasts. The tools needed to advance our knowledge in this way are disciplines of mathematics and physics applied to solve meteorological problems. The use of these tools forms that branch of the science called dynamic (动力旳) meteorology.6.Which of the following could be the best title for thepassage?A.Limitation of Meteorological ForecastingB.New Advances in Synoptic MeteorologyC.Approaches to the Science of MeteorologyD.The Basic of Dynamic Meteorology7.The predictions of synoptic meteorologists are directlybased on the _______.A.application of the physical scienceB.preparation and study of weather mapsC.anticipated needs of industryD.observations of commercial airline pilots8.The author implies that increased accuracy in weatherforecasting will lead to _______.A.more funds given to meteorological researchB.greater protection of human lifeC.a higher number of professional forecastersD.less-specialized forms of synoptic meteorology9.Which of the following statements best describes theorganization of the third paragraph of the passage?A.A scientific theory is explained.B.Two contrasting views of a problem are presented.C.Recent scientific advancements are outlined in order ofimportance.D.A problem is examined and possible solutions are given.10.In the last sentence of the passage the phrase “thetool” refer to ________.A. weather forecastB. meteorologicalproblemsC. mathematics and physicsD. economicadvantagesPassage 3Imagine one day reading that you had been a subject in a risky science experiment without knowing it. At school, you had been fed cereal (谷类食物) laced with radioactive chemicals so scientists could learn more about the digestive system. Because the food was radioactive, scientists could easily trace its path through the body.Scientists now know that exposure to large amount of radiation can cause cancer, a group of diseases in which bodily cells grow wildly out of control. Some people who were part of the radiation studies later developed cancer and blamed the radiation for causing the cancer. Others are worried the radiation will some day make them sick. Some doctors say that, in many cases, such fears are unjustified because the radiation doses(剂量)used in the experiments were too small to cause harm. They also say that since dangers of radiation were less well understood then than they are now, even researchers who used high doses of radiation didn’t do anything wrong. Some critics claim that no excuse is acceptable for not informing subjects about the nature of an experiment and giving them a chance to refuse to participate. Today, government rules require such informed agreement whenever a study uses people.11.The passage is mainly about ______.A.what kind of experiment cannot be done on peopleB.whether it is moral to experiment on people withoutthem knowC.how radiation studies are conductedD.what result can be produced in a radioactiveexperiment12.The word “laced”in paragraph 1 most likely means_____.A. confusedB. surroundedC. mixedD. covered13.Which of the following is true according to the passage?A.Radioactive chemicals can cause bodily cells to growwildly out of control.B.When the danger of radiation had not been proved, high doses of radiation were acceptable.C.Most cancers are caused by radiation.D.Radioactive chemicals were once used to curediseases with the digestive system.14.Today, government rules _____.A.demand to stop all experiments harmful to peopleB.prohibit all tests related to human beingsC.disapprove of experiments with uncertain resultsD.require to protect people’s right not to be testedwithout permission15.The author’s attitude towards the government decisionmay be described as _____.A. indifferentB. favorableC. criticalD. dubious(半信半疑旳)II.Vocabulary and StructureDirections: In this part there are 30 incomplete sentences. 模拟试题一Part I Reading Comprehension (30%)Passage 1Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage. What exactly is a lie? Is it anything we say which we know is untrue? Or is it something more than that? For example, suppose a friend wants to borrow some money from you. You say “I wish I could help you but I’m short of money myself.” In fact, you are not short of money but your friend is in the habit of not paying his debt and you don’t want to hurt his feelings by reminding him of this. Is this rally a lie?Professor Jerald Jellison of the University of Southern California has made a scientific study of lying. (76)According to him, women are better liars than men, particularly when telling a “white lie”, such as when a woman at a party tells another woman that she likes her dress when she really thinks it looks awful. However, this is only one side of the story. Other researchers say that men are more likely to tell more serious lies, such as making a promise which they have no intension of fulfilling. This is the kind of lie politicians and businessmen are supposed to be particularly skilled at: the lie from which the liar hopes to profit or gain in some way.Research has also been done into the way people’s behavior changes in a number of small, apparently unimportant ways when they lie. It has been found that if they are sitting down at the time, they tend to move about in their chairs more than usual. To the trained observer they are saying “I wish I were somewhere else now.”They also tend to touch certain parts of the face more often, in particular the nose. One explanation of this may be that lying causes a slight increase in blood pressure. The tip of the nose is very sensitive to such changes and the increased pressures make it itch.Another gesture which gives liars away is what the writer Desmond Morris in his book Manwatching calls “the mouth cover”.(77)He says there are several typical forms of this, such as covering part of the mouth with the fingers, touching the upper-lip or putting a finger of the hand at one side of the mouth. Such a gesture can be understood as an unconscious attempt on the part of the liar to stop himself or herself from lying.Of course, such gestures as rubbing the nose or covering the mouth, or moving about in a chair cannot be taken as proof that the speaker is lying. They simply tend to occur more frequently in this situation. It is not one gesture alone that gives the liar away but a whole number of things, and in particular the context in which the lie is told. 1.According to the passage, a “white lie” seems to be a lieA.that other people believeB.that other people don’t believeC.told in order to avoid offending someoneD.told in order to take advantage of someone2.Research suggests that womenA.are better at telling less serious lies than men areB.generally lie far more than men doC.lie at parties more often than men doD.often make promises they intend to break3.Researchers find that when a person tells liesA.his blood pressure increases measurablyB.he looks very seriousC.he tends to make some small changes in his behaviorD.he uses his unconscious mind4.One reason people sometimes rub their noses when they lieis thatA.they wish they were somewhere elseB.the nose is sensitive to physical changes caused bylyingC.they want to cover their mouthsD.they are trying to stop themselves from telling lies5.The tone of this passage tells us that the writerA.hates to lieB.enjoys lyingC.often tells a lieD.tries to analyze lyingPassage 2Question 6 to 10 are based on the following passage.(78) Let children learn to judge their own work. A child learning to talk does not learn by being corrected all the time: if corrected too much, he will stop talking. He notices a thousand times a day the difference between the language he uses and the language those around him use. Bit by bit, he makes the necessary changes to make his language like other people’s. In the same way, children learning to do all the other things they learn to do without being taught—to walk, run, climb, whistle, ride a bicycle—compare their own performances with those of more skilled people, and slowly make the needed changes. But in school we never give a child a chance to find out his mistakes and correct them for himself. We do it all for him. We act as if we thought that he would never notice a mistake unless it was pointed out to him, or correct it unless he was made to. Let him work out, with the help of other children if he wants it, what his word says, what the answer is to that problem, whether this is a good way of saying or doing this or not.If it is a matter of right answers, as it may be in mathematics orscience, give him the answer book. Let him correct his own papers. Why should we teachers waste time on such routine work? Our job should be to help the child when he tells that he can’t find the way to get the right answer. Let the children learn what all educated persons must some day learn, how to measure their own understanding, how to know what they know or do not know.6. According to the passage, which of the following is the best way for children to learn things?A. Listening to skilled people’s advice.B. Asking older people many questions.C. Making mistakes and having them corrected.D. Doing what other people do.7. The writer think teachers should NOT .A. give children correct answersB. allow children to make mistakesC. point out children’s mistakes to themD. let children mark their own work8. According to the writer, teachers in school should .A. allow children to learn from each otherB. point out children’s mistakes whenever foundC. correct children’s mistakes as soon as possibleD. give children more book knowledge9. According to the passage, learning to speak and learning to ride a bicycle are .A. different from learning other skillsB. the same as learning other skillsC. more important than other skillsD. not really important skills10. The title of this passage could probably be .A. Let Us Teachers Stop WorkB. Let Us Make Children LearnC. Let Children Correct Their ExercisesD. Let Children Learn By ThemselvesPassage 3Questions 1 to 5 are based on the following passage:(79) John had bought a packet of cigarettes just before we caught the train and he offered me one as we settled ourselvesin our compartment. We were on our way back from a camping holiday;we had lived rough for over a fortnight and even a cigarette was a luxury at that moment.I felt in my pocket for a box of matches, but could not find any.“I haven’t got any either,” said John.Sitting opposite to us was a man whose face was hidden bya newspaper.“Excuse me, sir,” said John, leaning across. “Could you give me a light, please?”The newspaper was lowered to reveal a rather elderly man with a stern face.“This is a no smoking compartment,” the man said. He indicated the notice near the window. We apologized and put away our unlit cigarettes.(80) The man went on, in a rather more kindly way, to warn us against the dangers of smoking.“I speak as a doctor,” he concluded, and after that he went back to reading his newspaper. When he got out a few stations later, he left his newspaper behind him. We picked it up, eager to find out what had happened while we were on holiday.“Just look at this,” remarked John, pointing to a photograph. “it’s the man who was sitting opposite us.” Underneath the photograph was an account of a lunatic (精神病者) who had recently escaped.
