We are similarly influenced by our environment. When our environment is bad, we may get sick physically or mentally. When our environment is supportive, we are more likely to thrive.Which factor (因素) of the environment influences us most? The answer is surprising. It’s not the air we breathe every minute, nor the water we drink every hour; it’s the people who we relate to every day. Every day we have connections with a lot of people in different situations. Some bring us happiness and provide us with loving support. Others bring us down and make us feel worthless.I have no doubt that one of the main keys to success is the people we know. It’s nice to have people in your life who encourage you to better yourself, and who support you in your effort to make yourself a better person. People whose hearts are big enough to be happy for your success, rather than those who are so proud that they always want to compete with you for success. People who see the potential (潜力) in you, even when you can’t see it in yourself. These are the people who you should have on your team and in your life.So if you really long for success, look back at the people who come in and out of your life. Are most of the people you know supportive or unsupportive? When people around you aren’t supportive, what kind of person do you become? Do you become shy, fearful, hateful and unhappy? When you connect with those who are supportive, what happens to you? Do you become open, lively, happy, strong and brave? We can all make a mindful decision about the environment around us. Relate more to those who make you happy being “you”, or who support you in being “you”.After all, each person has a seed (种子) in them to be the beautiful and awesome person they want to be. All they’re waiting for is that supportive soil to allow them to fully bloom.1. What does the passage mainly talk about?A. Saying no to unsupportive people.B. Letting the seed in you bloom.C. People around you could shape you.D. Influence of natural environment.2.The word “thrive” in Paragraph 1 probably means “______”.A. develop and growB. judge and warnC. mind and careD. fail and fear3.The writer mentions the five questions in Paragraph 4 to show that ______.A. some people always support what we do, some don’tB. we are included in a certain circle of friendsC. some people give us a sense of successD. we are influenced by people around usRelationships with people around youflowers and soil _______________ and ___________________________ environmente.g. air, water… ____________ environment: unsupportive people _______________ people shy, fearful, _______ and ________ conclusion: One of the main keys to success is the people we know. The people who you should have on your team and in your life are: 1. ___________________________________________________________ 2. ___________________________________________________________ 3. ___________________________________________________________ 4. ___________________________________________________________open, ________, ________, _________, and braveIn a room at Texas Children Cancer Center in Houston, eight-year-old Simran Jatar lay in bed with a drip (点滴) above her to fight her bone cancer. Over her bald (秃的) head, she wore a pink hat that matched her clothes. But the third grader's cheery dressing didn't mask her pain and weary eyes. Then a visitor showed up. "Do you want to write a song?" asked Anita Kruse, 49, rolling a cart equipped with an electronic keyboard, a microphone and speakers. Simran stared. "Have you ever written a poem?" Anita Kruse continued. "Well, yes," Simran said.Within minutes, Simran was reading her poem into the microphone. "Some bird soaring through the sky," she said softly. "Imagination in its head…" Anita Kruse added piano music, a few warbling(鸣, 唱) birds, and finally the girl's voice. Thirty minutes later, she presented Simran with a CD of her first recorded song. That was the beginning of Anita Kruse's project, Purple Songs Can Fly, one that has helped more than 125 young patients write and record songs. As a composer and pianist who had performed at the hospital, Kruse said that the idea of how she could help "came in one flash".The effect on the kids has been great. One teenage girl, curling (蜷缩) in pain in her wheelchair, stood independently to dance to a hip-hop song she had written. A 12-year-old boy with Hodgkin's disease who rarely spoke surprised his doctors with a song he called I Can Make It."My time with the kids is heartbreaking because of the severity of their illnesses," says Anita Kruse. "But they also make me happy, when the children are smiling, excited to share their CD with their families."Simran is now an active sixth grader and cancer-free. From time to time, she and her mother listen to her song, Always Remembering, and they always remember the "really sweet and nice and loving" lady who gave them a shining moment in the dark hour.1. Simran Jatar lay in bed in the hospital because ______.A. most of her hair had fallen outB. she was receiving treatment for cancerC. she felt depressed and quit from schoolD. she was suffering from a pain in her back2. What do we know about Anita Kruse's project?A. It helps young patients record songs.B. It is supported by singers and patients.C. It aims to replace medical treatment.D. It offers patients chances to realize their dreams.3. What does the example of a 12-year-old boy suggest?A. Most children are naturally fond of music.B. He was brave enough to put up a performance.C. The project has positive effect on young patients.D. Singing is the best way to treat some illnesses.4. What is probably the best title for the passage?A. Purple Songs Can FlyB. Singing Can Improve HealthC. A Shining Moment in LifeD. A Kind Woman-Anita KruseAfter her parents separated, things at Tami’s house changed. Her mom started working, and Tami became responsible for the house and making meals for herself and her younger sister. Though money was tight, they never went without. They had a nice home in a modest neighborhood. What Tami missed most of all, though, was family.Tami spent the summer during her ninth-grade year working at a park to earn extra spending money. Her job was to organize activities for the kids who spent their summer days at the park. The kids absolutely loved Tami. She was constantly going out of her way to do things for them. She would plan picnics, organize field trips and even buy ice cream for all of them, using her own money. She always did more than the job required, even if it did mean using her own money. She got to know one little boy who lived in an apartment across the street from the park. His parents both worked at fast–food restaurants, and she knew that they didn’t have much money. The boy talked about his upcoming birthday and the fire truck he wanted so badly. He said he was going to be a fireman some day and needed the truck to practice. He told Tami more details about the truck than she knew a toy truck could have. The boy’s birthday came and went. The next day when Tami saw the boy, she expected to see a shiny red truck in his arms. When he arrived empty – handed, she asked whether he had got the truck. The boy said no. His parents were going to get it for him later, when things were better. He seemed a little sad. That week, Tami cashed her paycheck and headed for the toy stores. She found the truck easily – after all, from his descriptions, she felt she knew it inside out.She used the money from her paycheck to buy the truck, and then had it wrapped in birthday paper.1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?A. Tami and her sister didn’t need to worry too much about their living.B. Tami’s sister became more responsible.C. Tami began to earn money.D. Her mother changed her job.2. What can we learn from the underlined sentence?A. She knew how much money she would pay.B. She knew she should check the toy truck inside out.C. She was fully aware of which toy truck the boy wanted.D. She walked inside and then out of the toy store several times.3.Why did Tami buy the birthday present for the boy using her own money?A. Because he was poorer than her.B. Because he was her best friend.C. Because she wanted him to be a fireman.D. Because she wanted him to feel love around him.【课后作业】Passage 4A phenomenon known as "kuakuaqun" or "praise groups" has taken Chinese social media by storm. The number of related topics on Weibo has reached more than 23 million. Userscan join a chat group on WeChat or QQ, where they are showered with varieties of generous praise and encouragement. Praising others like this is also very popular among teens who prefer to call it "Rainbow Fart".Just imagine the scenes: You get an A in an exam and you want to get some praise. When you post it into a praise group, you are praised for not only your efforts but also being as clever as Albert Einstein. It's 10 p.m. and you are the only person in the office. You receive a reply, "You are so hardworking! You'll definitely get a promotion(升职)!Praise to you!" Even if you go to a toilet and forget taking some tissue, someone points out that "you're caring about trees and the environment! Good for you!"How would you feel? The appearance of "praise groups" provides an opportunity for ordinary people who cannot get positive feedback easily in their daily life to get comfort from their hearts. It also shows the life and social pressure of today's young people. Moreover, the popularity of these chat groups is a reflection of Chinese culture which values modesty and humility-people often hide their true emotion of seeking and giving praise. As long as people's praise doesn't sound obviously untruthful, you're likely to welcome it. Being richly affirmed(肯定)for what you do or who you are -just feel good. Sometimes, people enjoy praising others as well, just because here they can drop everything and have fun by giving lavish(夸张的)comments. However, some people are also willing to encourage and support others from their hearts. Some netizens(网民)shared their ideas, "I take it as a way of adjusting the mood. The praise group helps in adding our confidence. Some sincere praises can even be inspiring. However, if you're really in trouble, it is you who holds the final key." Clearly, some dishonest praise comes at a cost. Chen Kan, an associate professor in Fudan University's psychology department warned that "The biggest risk is to continue to stress on the ‘false self', which makes it harder to see the ‘true self'. " In the end, people in the group will find that such unreasonable praise doesn't help solve the real problem. Soon the whole group will be silent and dead.Perhaps the praise groups are "a flash in the pan", which might disappear sooner or later. No matter how you think of it, only when you can understand the pressure, criticism and praise correctly, will you face them bravely? Don't lose yourself in others’ voices-that is what really matters.1. The writer mentions the examples in Paragraph 2 to show ______ .A. what people can get from "praise groups"B. when people need to join "praise groups"C. how people can join "praise groups"D. who wants to join "praise groups"2. Why do people like to join "praise groups"?______A. To hide real feelings of themselves.B. To ask for suggestions from others.C. To express the values of their own.D. To get comfort and be recognized.3. According to the passage, the writer may agree that ______ .A. we should see ourselves correctly and positivelyB. praise group is effective for dealing with troublesC. we should speak highly of others to please each otherD. praise group is necessary for building self-confidence4. Which is the best title for the passage?______A. "Praise Group": Does it benefit to know yourself?B. "Praise Group": Does it change your personality?C. "Praise Group": Is it important to praise others?D. "Praise Group": Is it worth giving it a try?5. The word “adjusting” in paragraph 5 probably means _________________.6. Challenge: Try to translate the expression "a flash in the pan" into a Chinese expression.【课后作业参考答案】1.A2.D3.A4.D5.调节、改善6.昙花一现(或相近表达)。

Passage 1
Flowers bloom (开花) only if they are planted in rich soil (土 壤).
What does the passage mainly talk about? Flowers? Nature?
Passage 1
Flowers bloom (开花) only if they are planted in rich soil (土 壤). We are similarly influenced by our environment. When our environment is bad, we may get sick physically or mentally. When our environment is supportive, we are more likely to thrive.
We can all make a mindful decision about the environment around us. Relate more to those who make you happy being “you”, or who support you in being “you”.

People whose hearts are big enough to be happy for your success, rather than those who are so proud that they always want to compete with you for success. Finding the Order of Events (Unit 1)
I have no doubt that one of the main keys to success is the people we know. It’s nice to have people in your life who encourage you to better yourself, and who support
Which factor (因素) of the environment influences us most? The answer is surprising. It’s not the air we breathe every
minute, nor the water we drink every hour; it’s the people who we relate to every day. Every day we have connections with a lot of people in different situations. Some bring us happiness and provide us with loving support. Others bring us down and make us feel worthless.
So if you really long for success, look back at the people who come in and out of your life. Are most of the people you know supportive or unsupportive? When people around you aren’t supportive, what kind of person do you become? Do you become shy, fearful, hateful and unhappy? When you connect with those who are supportive, what happens to you? Do you become open, lively, happy, strong and brave?
