“Wonderful!”
“How was that”
Not bad for my first try, but it may take me a little longer to get the rest.
Maybe you could be a great writer -- maybe even good enough to write a book or articles in a newspaper -- but you might not know it until you write that English paper -- that English class paper that's assigned to you. Maybe you could be an innovator or an inventor -- maybe even good enough to come up with the next iPhone or the new medicine or vaccine -- but you might not know it until you do your project for your science class. Maybe you could be a mayor or a senator or a Supreme Court justice -- but you might not know that until you join student government or the debate team.

college,life,3篇一: book1 unit3 college life in the internet ageCollege life in the internet ageThe college campus, long a place of scholarship and frontiers of new technology,is being transformed into a new age of electronics by a fleet of laptops, smartphones and connectivity 24 hours a day.On a typical modern-day campus, where every building and most outdoor commonareas offer wireless internet access, one student takes her laptop everywhere. In class, she takes notes with it,sometimes instant-messaging or emailing friends if the professor is less than interesting. In her dorm, she instant-messages her roommate sitting just a few feet away. She is tied to her smartphone, which she even uses totext a friend who lives one floor above her, and which supplies music for walks between classes.Welcome to college life in the21st century, where students on campus are electronically linked to each other, to professors and to theirclasswork24/7 in an ever-flowing river of information and communication. With many schools offering wireless internet access anywhere on campus, colleges as a group have becomethe most internet-accessible spots in the world.Students say they really value their fingertip-access to the boundless amount of information online, and the ability to email professors at 2 a.m. and receive responses the next morning.“I always feel like I have a means of communication– in class and out of class,”says one engineering major. Many are using smartphones, not only to create their own dialectswhen texting, but also to do more serious work, such as practicing foreign languages and analyzing scripts from their theater classes. In a university class on the history of American radio, students usesmartphones to record their own radio shows. The course instructor said,“It’ s adding to students’ sense of excitement about the subject.”Professors have been encouraged to tape their lectures and post themonline.“Werealized there might be somepotential for a device that could get attention and encourage sophisticated thinking,” says one leading university director. For most undergraduates,non-stop internet connectivity is the fuel of college life.More than just toys, these instruments are powerful tools for the storage and management of virtually every kind of information. And as more people around the world adopt these instruments, they arebecoming indispensable. So students should use the wonders of the internet to do homework, review lecture outlines, take part in class discussionsand network online with their friends. But in doing so, students mustremember to regulate and balance their time.Too muchtime online can mean too little time in real-life studying or exercising or visiting withfriends. Students should not let the internet world on their computerscreens take them away from the real world outside.College began embracing internet access in the mid-1990s, when many began wiring dorms with high-speed connections. In the past few years, schools have taken the lead by turning their campuses into bubbles of Wi-Fi networks. In fact, a recent study in the US found that information technology accounted for5%to8%of c ollege budgets,up from an estimated 2% to 3% in the mid-1980s.On one campus, students use Wi-Fi to fire off instant messages, review their homeworkassignments, and check their bank balances.Just nine miles downthe highway, another university had been feeling a bit of a technology inferiority complex. To compensate,it spent tens of thousands of dollars to give every one of its incoming freshmen a free Apple iPad.Some universities even require that all students own or lease a laptop.Somesay the focus on technology prepares students for a wired world. “You have to keep up with the rest of the world.Students expect high-bandwidth information, and if you can’ t deliver it, you’ re at a competitive disadvantage, ” states a university president.Other colleges are straining to stand out from their peers. The race to attract students with the most modern networks and the hottest systems has reached fever pitch.Somebusiness majors are receiving free portable computers. In an always-connected mode, they can get information anytime and anywhere they need. One university is even giving its freshmen new smartphones to eich the student experience and prepare them for successin a rapidly changing world. For those who prefer to travel laptop-free,colleges supply several computer labs. And for students who study late into the night, many haveset up 24-hour repair shops where students can get their laptops fixedby the nest day and receive a loaner in the meantime.Colleges around the world have been replacing their computer systems for the pas decade, in large part to provide students with the mostadvanced free systems. The anywhere-anytime access has already yielded amazing benefits in education. With the widespread application lf computer technologies,we are going to produce a generation of problem-solvers and intelligent thinkers, which is indispensable for the future of the world.篇二: Unit 3 campus lifeUnit 3Campus lifeReading —— A Letter to a Friend(First Period)Teaching aims(教课目的):Knowledge aims:The students are able to learn the key words and useful Expressions: feel /nervous/ friendly/ sometimes/ send/ practice/ get to/at first / in class /show concern about/ with the help of / go well /on weekends go sightseeing / get along / have a good time .Ability aims:The students are able to learn some reading strategies and learn howto write letters.Emotion aims : The students are able to realize the importance of friendship andlearn to share their happiness and unhappiness with theirfriends.Teaching key points(教课重点):1.The key words and useful expressions in the text.2.To analyze the whole text and try to get the main idea of the text.Teaching difficult points(教课难点):1.To use the key words and useful expressions.2. Learning a foreign language is not a matter of reading some grammar rules or some vocabulary words-although those are important activities not to be ignored. Acquiring (学到) a language is learning a skill, not a body of information. It's much more like learning to swim or ride a bike than it is like learning about the Second World War. That is, you must not only understand the ideas and have information at hand, but also make your body accustomed (习惯于) to using that information in physical (身体的) activity. In the case of learning a second language, the physical activity is speaking, listening, writing, and reading. You need, then, not only to learn and understand, but also to practice! Here are a few suggestions on effective practice/studytechniques.1. Make your mouth or hand do what your mind is learning. Study out loud. Go to the lab and work with tapes. Study with a friend, practicing speaking and listening. Try to write sentences or a short paragraph using the skills you have practiced with your own lips.2. Study day by day. You cannot get by in a foreign language course by cramming (临时抱佛脚) at the last minute. You may be able to "learn" vocabulary items that way, but you cannot teach your mouth to use them in sentences.3. Sometimes go back and review "old" topics and vocabulary. Language learning is cumulative (累积的). The new skills you learn build upon the old skills you learned in the past. The more you "recycle" (循环) familiar information and skills, the better you will be able to take in new ones.4. Don't be afraid to make mistakes. Self-consciousness (害羞) can be a strong barrier to learning a language. Perhaps part of the reason small children readily learn languages is that they are not afraid of making mistakes.6.The main idea of the first paragraph is______.A. memorizing vocabulary words is necessary in languageB. learning to swim is quite similar to learning about theC. understanding the ideas is more important thanD. language learning is a process of acquiring different7.One of the major benefits of studying with a friend is that_____________ .A. it makes one talk and listen in a particular languageB. it builds the friendship between two friendsC. friends can share tapes or other learning materialsD. one studies better with a friend8.Cramming is not helpful in learning a language because_________.A. it is of little use to study without a clear purposeB. nothing can be learned through crammingC. anything learned that way can hardly be put into useD. one may not find enough time to use at the last minute9.The purpose of reviewing old topics is_____________________________.A. to build up a good base for new skillsB. to enjoy the good ideas contained in themC. to throw away the old, useless informationD. to avoid making mistakes in the future10.Which of the following is the best title for the passage?A. Why Children Are Able to Learn a Language BetterB. A Few Suggestions on Studying a Foreign LanguageC. Why Learning a Foreign Language Is More DifficultD. An Introduction to Language Teaching and LearningQuestions 11 to 15 are based on the same passage or dialog."Culture consists of all shared products of a human society" (Robertson, 1981). Thismeans not only such material things as cities, tools, and schools, but also non-material things, such as ideas, customs, family patterns, and languages. Put simply, culture refers to the entire way of life of a society, "the ways of a people".Language is a part of culture and plays a very important role in it. Some social scientists consider it the keystone of culture. Without language, maintaining culture would not be possible. On the other hand, language is influenced and shaped by culture. It reflects culture in the broadest sense, is the symbolic representation of a people, and it comprises a society's historical and cultural backgrounds. Language also displays a people's approach to life and their ways of living and thinking. We should not go further into the relationship between language and culture. What needs to be stressed here is that the two interact, and that understanding of one requires understanding of the other.Social scientists tell us that cultures differ from one another and that each culture is unique. As cultures are diverse, languages are also diverse. It is only natural then that with difference in cultures and differences in languages, difficulties often arise in communicating between people of different cultures. Understanding is not always easy. Learning a foreign language well means more than merely mastering the pronunciation, grammar, words, and idioms. It also means learning to see the world as native speakers of that language see it, learning the ways in which their language reflects the ideas, customs, and behaviors of their society. It means learning to understand their "language of themind". Learning a language, in fact, is inseparable from learning culture.11.According to Robertson, what is NOT part of non-material culture?A. Legal systems.B. Language.C. Religion.D. Tools.12.The second paragraph is about _____.A. the way language is used by social scientistsB. the relationship between language and cultureC. the influence culture has on languageD. the influence language has on culture13.If you want to learn a foreign language well, you must _____.A. grasp the pronunciation, grammar, words, and idiomsB. master the language as well as its cultureC. know the way the native speakers of that language thinkD. learn the country's culture first14.The relationship between language and culture is that _________.A. language dominates cultureB. culture dominates languageC. they are connected with each otherD. language consists of culture15. College Students are able to Learn to Love by Falling in Love
When it comes to campus love, we are all accustomed to avoiding mentioning this sensitive topic as if it was shameful, especially for girls. However, I do support the idea that college students are supposed to learn to love, not merely love others, but also love ourselves, which should be put on the agenda in the college education. At the same time, the best way to learn to love is falling in love.
To commence, falling in love helps us to love and understand our parents. In the modern society, a substaintial number of college students are the pearls in the palms for parents, who aims to devote all of their energies to bringing their children up. But has it ever occurred to you that our generations are lack of concern for our lovers, friends, relatives and even parents as we grow older? I want to take my own experience as an example: I used to be a capricious and self-centered girl who hardly ever followed parents’ advice for all that I knew they were right until I met my boyfriend. Generally, he gives me several calls every day, asking about what I eat and how I feel even though he is so busy in preparing lessons as well as classes frequently. Everytime we go out for shopping and travelling, it is always none of my business about how to go and what kinds of souvenirs should I buy for relatives. What impressed me most was a sentence he told me: “ Do not be easily moved by
what I have done, I simply accompany you for 4 years while your parents bring you up over 20 years.” To be blunt, I gradually understand and learn to appreciate my parents’love as well as showing my respect for them, for I feel ashamed of what I have done in the past years.
The secondary reason is that falling in love offers us opportunities to love our surroundings and build an circle of intimate friends. Published in 1940, The book An Outline of Psycho-Analysis (written by Freud) elaborates the relationships and attitudes people who fall in love towards others: “Lovers show higher enthusiasm and positivity towards their surroundings, in accord with their mutual affections towards each other than anyone else. Just like an old saying goes like this: lovers smile, everyone smiles. From my perspective, college students who are falling in love are more easier to love others and get along well with their friends. Maybe this is the magic power of love!
Last but not least, falling in love motivates a kind of substance called “hormone” which aims to stimulate the mutual love and concern for each other to make their love last longer. Women in Love, written by D.H Lawrence, demonstrates that human beings can not resist loving each other deadly when they indeed fall in love whether male or female. Furthermore, the statistics researched by City Newspaper indicates that over 70% of college students they interviewed who are falling in love explain the details fluently about how to love each other and what should they do for their lovers to make them happy, which is, to some degree, out of universal expectations.
In the final analysis, falling in love does benefit to increasing the lovers’ love not only for their parents as well as the relatives, but also for their intimate lovers. Without any doubt, showing and expressing love represent maturity instead of merely receiving other s’concern. So please do not hesitate to show your love captalized on what you have got from you boyfriends or girlfriends!
