program for immigrant children. No one was surprised, then, when she chose to volunteer in an orphanage in Khayelitsha, one of South Africa’s poorest areas, during her junior year abroad. At the orphanage,Johnson discovered most of the children infected with HIV at birth, many abandoned by parents too sick to care for them,or neglected by surviving relatives.Few were receiving the care needed to stay healthy. Many died. When she left, all she wanted to do was go back and change what she had seen. After graduation,Johnson began a fund-raising effort that eventually collected enough money to found UBA,a nonprofit organization intended to provide services for HIV-positive(阳性的)kids aged 4 to 18 in Khayelitsha. Now UBA is housed in a church big enough for offices and the children. The staff includes counselors(咨询师),a social worker,a nurse,a cook, and a handful of volunteers, ensuring that each child has access to proper care,a free healthy meal, and emotional support.Once a week, she makes sure the children receive age-appropriate lessons about AIDS.The social worker sees to it that the kids are enrolled(注册)in school and have safe living conditions-especially those without parents.Johnson plans to soon relocate UBA to an even larger location with more medical staff and a field“so the kids can run around and just feel like kids.”She’s also working with the South African Department of Health so that the new center can distribute drugs and give blood tests.“Many people think that HIV means death, but it doesn’t,”Johnson says.“There’s so much that can be done.”In the five years since the center opened, not one of the 200 kids in the program has died.“It’s so emotional to see the strong, independent people they become.”One teenage girl who had received help at UBA even announced that she wanted to become a nurse.1.What is the text mainly about?A.A kind girl caring for children with HIV.B.A poor area stricken by poverty and disease.C.A nonprofit organization providing services for kids.D.Abandoned children infected with HIV.2.After graduating from college,Whitney Johnson________.A.volunteered at soup kitchens in New YorkB.went to study abroad for a testsB.is located in South AfricaC.is an orphanage in KhayelitshaD.trains girls to be nursesBA music festival is a festival determined towards music that is sometimes presented with a theme such as musical type, nationality or locality of musicians,or holiday. They are commonly held outdoors, and are often inclusive of other attractions such as food and merchandise vendors(卖主),performance art,and social activities. The Pythian Games at Delphi included musical performances, and may be one of the earliest festivals known.During the Middle Ages festivals were often held as competitions. Many festivals are annual,or repeat at regular interval. Some, including many rock festivals, are held only once. Some festivals are organized as for-profit concerts and others are benefits for a specificcause.Another type of music festival is the educative type, organized annually in local communities, regionally or nationally, for the benefit of amateur musicians of all ages and grades of achievement. While entrants(参加竞赛者) perform prepared pieces in the presence of an audience which includes competitors, the essential feature of this type of festival is that each participant receives verbal and written feedback(反馈),there and then, from a highly qualified, professional adjudicator(判决者)—someone who they might never meet in any other way. They also usually receive a certificate, classified according to merit, and some may win trophies. The competitive element is often played down, however,as the important aspect is that participants can learn from one another.Such festivals aim to provide a friendly and supportive platform for musicians to share in the excitement of making music. For many they provide a bridge between lessons & examinations and performing confidently in public.5.What is TRUE about a music festival?A.It must be performed with a theme once a year.B.A common music festival is held outdoors.C.Some may not only include musical performances.D.Music festivals date from the Middle Ages.6.The music festivals can be held as the following EXCEPT________.A.competitionsB.for-profit concertsC.benefits for a specific The coast of Otago on the South Island of New Zealand is known for a strange and still unexplained natural wonder—the amazing Moeraki Boulders. These are giant rocks, and perfectly round boulders ,seemingly washed up on a beach. They are sitting mysteriously on the beach. Each boulder weighs several tonnes and is up to two metres high. Some of the boulders are ingroups, while the others stand by themselves. The boulders contain mud and clay, which are held together by calcite1. However, how they got here is not fully understood. Scientists explain that the boulders formed deep at the bottom of the sea about 65 million years ago. For millions of years, the boulders lay buried underground, covered up over time. Slowly, waves, winds and rains were digging them up one by one. As the sand that surrounds them erodes2,they seem to rise to the surface as if pushed up from the center of the Earth. Thanks to centuries of erosion, we see the mysterious round stones along the beach today.

APeople use their mouths for many things. They eat, talk, shout and sing. They smile and they kiss. In the English language, there are many expressions using the word “mouth”.For example, if you say bad things about a person, the person might protest(抗议)and say “Do not bad mouth me.” Sometimes, people say something to a friend or family member that they later regret because it hurts that person. Or they tell the person something they were not supposed to tell. The speaker might say, “I really put my foot in my mouth this time. ”If this should happen, the speaker m ight feel down in the mouth. In other words, he might feel sad for saying the wrong thing.Another situation is when someone falsely claims another person said something. The other person might protest,“I did not say that. Do not put words in my mouth.”Some people have lots of money because they were born into a very rich family. There is an expression for this, too. You might say such a person,“was born with a silver spoon in his mouth.” This rich person is the opposite of a person who lives from hand to mouth. This person is very poor and only has enough money for the most important things in life, like food.Parents might sometimes keep a child off sweet food as a form of punishment for saying bad things. For example, if a girl says things she should not say to her parents, she might be described as a mouthy child. The parents might even tell the child to stop mouthing off.But enough of all this talk. I have been running my mouth long enough.语篇解读:人们用嘴做很多事情,比如吃饭,谈话,喊叫,唱歌,微笑,接吻等。

What can be the best title for the passage?A.Animal population increases VS mass extinctionB.The beautiful Ugandan national parksC.The life of the okapi before and after disappearingD.The extinction of the world’s mammalsBYou can’t always predict a heavy rain or remember your umbrella. But designer Mikhail Belyaev doesn’t think that forgetting to check the weather forecast before heading out should result in you getting wet. That’s why he created Lampbrella,a lamp post with its own rainsensing umbrella. The designer says he came up with the idea after watching people get wet on streets in Russia.“Once,I was driving on a central Saint Petersburg street and saw the street lamps lighting up people trying to hide from the rain.I thought it would be appropriate to have a canopy(伞蓬)built into a street lamp,” he said. The Lampbrella is a standardlooking street lamp fitted with an umbrella canopy. It has a builtin electric motor which can open or close the umbrella on demand.Sensors(传感器)then ensure that the umbrella offers pedestrians shelter whenever it starts raining. In addition to the rain sensor, there’s also a 360°motion sensor on thefiberglass street lamp which detects whether anyone is using the Lampbrella. After three minutes of not being used the canopy is closed.According to the designer, the Lampbrella would move at a relatively low speed,so as not to cause harm to the pedestrians.Besides,it would be grounded to protect from possible lightning strike. Each Lampbrella would offer enough shelter for several people.Being installed(安装) at 2 metres off the ground,it would only be a danger for the tallest of pedestrians. While there are no plans to take the Lampbrella into production,Belyaev says he recently introduced his creation to one Moscow Department, and insists his creation could be installed on any street where a lot of people walk but there are no canopies to provide shelter.5.For what purpose did Belyaev create the Lampbrella?A.To predict a heavy rain.B.To check the weather forecast.C.To protect people from the rain.D.To remind people to take an umbrella.6.What do we know from Belyaev’s words in Paragraph 2?A.His creation was inspired by an experience.B.It rains a lot in the city of Saint Petersburg.C.Street lamps are protected by canopies.D.He enjoyed taking walks in the rain.7.Which of the following shows how the Lampbrella works?A.motor→canopy→sensorsB.sensors→motor→canopyC.motor→sensors→canopyD.canopy→motor→sensors8.What can be inferred from the last paragraph?A.The designer will open a company to promote his product.B.The Lampbrella could be put into immediate production.C.The designer is confident that his creation is practical.D.The Lampbrella would be put on show in Moscow答案基础落实Ⅰ.1.B 2.A 3.A 4.CⅡ.1.sightings 2.mysterious 3.claimed 4.surface 5.dived 6.appeared7.calm 8.sceptical 9.unlikely 10.creaturesⅢ.1.to 2.of 3.in 4.away 5.of能力提升1.D2.B3.C4.A5.C6.A7.B8.C。

Last year the Foundation reported that nearly 60% of 7-to 12-year-olds said they felt tired during the day, and 15% said they had fallen asleep at school. How much sleep you need depends a lot on your age. Babies need a lot of rest; most of them sleep about 18 hours a day! Adults need about eight hours. For most school-age children, ten hours is ideal(理想的). But the new National Sleep Foundation survey found that 35% of 10-to 12-year-olds get only seven or eight hours . And guess what almost half of the surveyed kids said they do before bedtime? Watch TV.“More children are going to bed with TVs on, and there are more opportunities (机会) to stay awake, with more homework, the Internet and the phone,” says Dr. Mary Carskadon, a sleep researcher at BrownUniversityMedicalSchool. She says these activities at bedtime can get kids all excited and make it hard for them to calm down and sleep. Other experts say part of the problem is chemical. Changing levels of body chemicals called hormones not only make teenagers' bodies develop adult characteristics, but also make it hard for teenagers to fall asleep before 11 p.m..Because sleepiness is such a problem for teenagers, some school districts have decided to start high school classes later than they used to. Three years ago, schools in Edina, Minnesota, changed the start time from 7∶25 a.m. to 8∶30 a.m..Students, parents and teachers are pleased with the results.1.What is the new National Sleep Foundation survey on?A.American kids' sleeping habits.B.Teenagers' sleep-related diseases.C.Activities to prevent sleeplessness.D.Learning problems and lack of sleep.2.How many hours of sleep do 11-year-olds need every day?A.7 hours. B.8 hours.C.10 hours. D.18 hours.3.Why do teenagers go to sleep late according to Carskadon?A.They are affected by certain body chemicals.B.They tend to do things that excite them.C.They follow their parents' examples.D.They don't need to go to school early.答案与解析本文是一篇说明文。
