Now mid-aged Americans may not keep in touch with old people until they are old themselves. That’s because we group people by age. We put our three-year-olds together in day-care center, our 13-year-olds in school and sports activities, and our 80-year-olds in senior-citizen homes. Why?We live away from the old for many reasons: young people sometimes avoid the old to get rid of fears for aging and dying. It is much harder to watch someone we love disappear before our eyes. Sometimes it’s so hard that we stay away from the pe ople who need us most.Fortunately, some of us have found our way to the old. And we have discovered that they often save the young.A reporter moved her family onto a block filled with old people. At first her children were disappointed. But the reporter baked banana bread for the neighbors and had her children deliver it and visit them. Soon the children had many new friends, with whom they shared food, stories and projects. “My children have never been less lonely,” the reporter said. The young, in turn, save the old. Once I was in a rest home when a visitor showed up with a baby. She was immediately surrounded. People who hadn’t gotten out of bed in a week suddenly were ringing for a wheelchair. Even those who had seemed asleep wake up to watch the child. Babies have an astonishing power to comfort and cure.Grandparents are a special case. They give grandchildren a feeling of security and continuity. As my husband put it, “my grandparents gave me a deep sense that things would turn out right in the end.”Grandchildren speak of attention they don’t get from worried parents. “My parents were always telling me to hurry up, and my grandparents told me to slow down,” one friend said. A teacher told me she can tell which pupils have relationships with grandparents: they are quieter, calmer, more trusting.16. Now in an American family, people can find that ____.A.children never live with their parentsB. aged people are supported by their grandchildrenC. not all working people live with their parentsD. grandchildren are supported by their grandparents17. The reason why old people are left alone may be that ____.A. different generations have different lifestylesB. the young can’t get enough money to support the oldC. the old don’t like to live in a big familyD. the old are too weak to live with the young 18. The fact that the reporter told us shows that ___. A. old people in America lead a hard life B. old people in America enjoy banana bread C. she had no time to take care of her children D. old people are easy to get along with 19. Seeing a baby, the old people get excited because ____. A . the baby’s mother would take care of themB. the baby was clever and beautifulA.which pupils have relationshipsB. the baby was clever and beautifulC.worried parents.D. they are quieter, calmer, more trusting. 第二部分 英语知识运用第一节 完形填空(共20小题,每小题2分,共40分)阅读短文,从短文后所给的四个选项(A 、B 、C 、D )中,选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。

They are fictional series on television or radio that follow a group of families and show us the events of their everyday life. Soap operas take their strange name from the past, when soap manufacturers(制造商) used to pay for the programmes. Here are some of the most famous soap operas in the UK today:Coronation StreetCoronation Street was first aired on the British television in 1960 and has been running ever since, several times a week. The street is located in the fictional town of Weather field, in the North of England. Some important places in the TV series are the cafe, the corner shop and the Rovers Return pub where lots of characters meet up for a drink and a chat.East EndersCoronation Street's main rival is called East Enders, set in East London. It began later in the 1980s, and follows the residents of Albert Square in their life at home and at work. In this soap opera, there is a lot of drama, including murder and romantic stories. The opening theme for this programme shows the River Thames.EmmerdaleEmmerdale is based on a town in the Yorkshire Dales, the green countryside of the North of England. The series follows a group of families in the small village of Emmerdale, mostly working on farms. The setting of this series is similar to the one of The Archers, another long-running soap opera broadcast on BBC radio. It's the second oldest soap opera in the UK, first aired in 1972.Soap operas are usually not realistic at all but they are a chance to see some elements of British culture. The characters of ten have quite strong accents. They also speak very quickly, so it makes for some challenging listening exercises for English learners. Their storylines can be soattractive that some people never miss an episode(集) of the show.26. Coronation Street, one of the most famous soap operas _______.A. first appeared on TV in the UK in 1960B. lies in the countryside in the North of EnglandC. is similar to The Archers in the setting of the seriesD. is famous for the places in this opera for a drink and a chat27. Which of the following is full of so much drama?A. Coronation Street.B. EastEnders.C. Emmerdale.D. Weatherfield.28. Which is the second oldest soap opera in the UK?A. Emmerdale.B. The Archers.C. EastEnders.D. Coronation Street.29. From the last paragraph, we can see that _______.A. watching British soap operas may help with English learningB. soap operas are attractive because of their backgroundsC. British soap operas are always based on true storiesD. characters speak Standard English in the operas30. The passage is mainly about ______.A. the history of British soap operasB. the popularity of British soap operasC. the characters of some famous British soap operasD. the information of some famous. British soap operasBMy dad is by no means the only person who avoids books. I know lots of people would rather relax on their computers or in front of the TV. Everyone is different and has their own interests, but I think there are lots of benefits of reading books, which screen-based activities (games, films, TV, etc.) don't have:Firstly, it's better' for your eyes. Looking at screens can be very stressful for your eye muscles, and to, get a good night's sleep, you should avoid looking at screens for an hour before bed.One thing I personally love about reading is being transported to another world. Reading is agreat way to switch off before you go to bed, because you think more about the world of the book, rather than the real world and the problems you have during the day and you can truly relax. I know you can be transported to a different world in a film or a TV show, but I think books do it better. While seeing a film, I often talk to my flat mates, send texts, or paint my nails. A book, on the other hand, controls your full attention.I also love people. I am nosy and enjoy hearing what people are doing and finding out what people think about. Reading gives you the chance to get to know hundreds of new people! It also teaches you to see things from other people's points of view, and understand other people's decisions or opinions. With a book, you can learn everything a character is thinking about or feeling. You really can be inside someone else's head!So give it a go! Take 15 minutes when you wake up, go to bed, eat lunch, or have a coffee. If you read a lot, why not try 15 minutes of an English book, or pass the challenge on to someone else? Good luck and happy reading!31. What do we know about the author's father?A. He doesn't like relaxing.B. He doesn't enjoy reading books.C. He enjoys screen-based reading.D. He has different ways of reading.32. Which of the following is NOT a screen-based activity?A. Playing online games.B. Seeing films on TV.C. Reading a novel on the computer.D. Reading a novel from a book.33. The author prefers reading books to watching TV because ______.A. watching TV cannot make her relaxB. reading books helps her be more focusedC. watching TV cannot take her to another worldD. reading books improves communication with her flat mates34. According to Paragraph 4, a nosy person is someone Who________.A. has a big noseB. enjoys asking other people questionsC. is curious about other people's doingsD. sees thing from other people's points of view35. The last paragraph is written to _______.A. show the reasons of reading booksB. explain the benefits of readingC. tell people to read English booksD. call on people to read booksCHe's overseen the recycling of 300,000 pounds of e-waste. He's successfully persuaded the Rhode Island state lawmakers to prevent the public from throwing away electronics. He's used renovated (翻新的) computers to create media centers in developing countries like Cameroon and Sri Lanka to improve computer ability. He's Alex Lin, a 16-year-old environmental activist. In 2004, Lin happened to read an article in the Wall Street Journal which alerted(使警觉) him to the e-waste problem, and warned of an e-waste tsunami to come.E-waste, or electronics garbage, is the fastest growing section of the U.S. trash stream. In 2007, Americans threw away more than 112,000 computers daily, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. Even worse, just 18 percent of thrown-away televisions and computer products were collected for recycling. Almost all electronic devices contain various amounts of dangerous chemicals and heavy metals which are harmful to the human body. E-waste, if not dealt with properly, can cause damage to the environment. While there is no federal law banning e-waste, 20 states have passed laws permitting statewide e-waste recycling. Alex Lin has taken e-waste matters into his own hands."Reduce, reuse, and recycle" are the so-called 3Rs of eco-friendly behaviour. To start, Lin and his student-led community service team, Westerly Innovations Network (WIN), concentrated their efforts on recycling. However, once Lin and his team discovered that reusing computers was much more efficient than recycling, they decided to create a computer-refurbishing (翻新) program. They worked with the Westerly School System to incorporate computer refurbishing into the A+ Certified Computer Repair class's curriculum.More than 300 refurbished computers were donated to low-income students without home computer access. "It was an eye-opening experience," says Jeff Brodie, 16, of the moment when he, Lin, and other WIN teammates walked into one Westerly residence to set up a computer. "The kids were running around very excitedly."36. From Paragraph 2, we can know that e-waste______.A. is the most serious environmental problem in the U.S.B. can pollute the environment under any conditionsC. is often collected for reusing in the U.S.D. can do harm to human health37. The underlined word "banning" in Paragraph 3 is closest in meaning to “_______”A. favouringB. recyclingC. recreatingD. forbidding38. In the beginning, WIN focused on_______.A. repairing waste computersB. recycling waste computersC. reducing the use of computersD. creating a computer-renovating program39. What can be inferred from the passage?A. Lin helped the U.S. improve computer ability.B. To solve the e-waste problem, Lin read the Wall Street Journal for help.C. Not every state has passed laws allowing e-waste recycling.D. A computer-refurbishing program helped recycle waste computers.40. What is the best title of the passage?A. Nine in ten teachers describe formal writing assignments as an "essential" part of the learning process, and 91% say that "writing effectively" is an "essential" skill that students need for future success.Almost all AP and NWP teachers surveyed (94%) encourage students to do some of their writing by hand. Many teachers noted that because students are required to write by hand on standardized tests, it is an essential skill for them.
