AI'm a 20-year old boy, and the following is my story.A month after I graduated from high school in August, 2007, I was coming home from swim -practice in the training centre of the city and was involved in a car accident. I was so seriously injured that I was in a coma for more than two months at Prince Georges Hospital.I suffered a lot from the experience of dying eight times during my coma and I couldn't open my mouth to talk or to communicate when I eventually came around. At that time, it seemed that walking was never going to happen again due to all the extreme injuries. Just like my body, my dreams were completely destroyed. But I was not going to let my injuries stop me from realizing my dreams. After receiving a total of 15 operations and 36 blood transfusions, I had to make every great effort to learn to talk, eat, walk, shower, and live on my own again. When I was out of hospital, I still had to go to outpatient therapy in Waldorf, Maryland. After I spent a few months in a wheelchair, I took baby steps to walk on my own. It was a miracle that I was able to walk again, but I still wanted to prove that I could not only walk, but also run. When it came true, I wanted to get back into the pool again. After having a few lung tests, I was able to go in the pool a little bit each week. After a few months of swim training, I began my freshman year at St. Mary's College of Maryland and then became a proud member of the swim team.By telling my story, I want to make a positive influence on the world. I am just trying to live every day to the fullest and inspire other people never to give up their dreams no matter how bad a situation is to them. I remember when I was still in my hospital bed, I would have my mom and dad push me round in my wheelchair to the other rooms to see the other patients and chat with them and their family members. I wanted to let them know that everything was going to be okay. Somehow, things would work out for the best.1.The1.The underlined word “coma” in Paragraph 2 probably has the meaning of “______”.A.operation B.unconsciousnessC.treatment D.emergency( )2.According to Paragraph 3, it can be inferred that the author______.A.was unable to talk or communicateB.was in despairC.faced physical and mental challengesD.felt anxious about his state( )3.In the last paragraph, the author mainly wants to show______.A.his positive influence on other patientsB.his meaningful lifeC.his purpose of sharing his storyD.his great achievements本文讲述了作者如何克服重重困难,从车祸后昏迷状态到慢慢学会自理、走路、跑步,最后又重返泳池成为游泳队的一员。

AThe time may soon come when we say goodbye to most of the world’s languages. Today humans express themselves in over 6,000 different languages. But that is quickly changing. Many scientists say that over half of these languages will disappear within the next 50 years. After 100 years, the languages used in the world will not be more than 20.Why? It is because people from different cultures live and work together much more often than before. This brings change. The languages of the world’s main cultures are replacing the languages of the smaller cultures. Most international trade takes place in world languages such as English. People respect their own cultures and traditions, but when it comes to getting a job, knowing a world language is often necessary. It may mean the difference between success and failure.Technology works on the change of languages in an even more amazing way. Modern media such as radio and television give young people in developing countries much knowledge about the world. But this knowledge doesn’t come in words from the mouths of their parents or the elders in their neighborhood. It usually comes in the language of a different culture.People in different cultures think it good for them to share a popular language. They can quickly share ideas and work together. Knowing the same language means easier communication and is a basis for trust. Is the death of a small local language such a terrible thing? The answer is maybe. Many cultures may have words for many useful things we know nothing about. If their languages die, their valuable wisdom may be lost forever. The future of the world’s languages depends on our actions now. Will we pr otect endangered languages or allowed them to quietly disappear?Time will have the last word.21. Scientists say that within 50 years, perhaps, there will be only ___ languages inthe world.A. 4,000B. over 3,000C. around 3,000D. no more than 2022. In “The languages of the world’s main cultures are replacing the languages of thesmaller cultures,” the verb “replace” means “_____”.A. to put something back into a correct placeB. to use a second thing in place of the first thingC. to find good place for somethingD. to decide how important something is23. The passage says that if all the people in the world knew a major world language,_____.A. radio and television would all use the languageB. it would be easier for them to share their ideasC. lessons at schools would be taught in the languageD. people would respect their own culture more24. Also, the passage says that if nobody spoke the languages of smaller cultures,_____.A. Many of the words for things we do not know would be lost.B. knowledge would come from the mouths of the eldersC. people would have difficult in working togetherD. there would be no smaller cultures.25. By saying “Time will have the last word,” the writer means “ _____”.A. let us wait and seeB. we have time to do somethingC. it is too late to do anythingD. it is only a problem of timeBPeople who are cheerful and relaxed are less likely to suffer from colds. It’s possible that being full of vim and vigor helps the body fight illnesses, say the researchers from Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) in Pittsburgh.“We need to take more seriously the possibility that a positive emotional style is a major player in disease risk,”says psychologist Sheldon Cohen, the study’s lead researcher. In a previous study, Cohen and his colleagues found that people who tended to be cheerful and lively were least likely to develop sniffles, coughs, and other cold symptoms. Those findings were interesting, but they didn’t prove that a person’s attitude affects whether he or she gets sick. Instead, it was still probable that a person’s underlying personality is what matters.Evidence suggests, for instance, that certain people are naturally more likely to be outgoing and optimistic, with high self-respect and a sense of control over life. This would mean that who we are, not how we feel, finally decides our chances of catching colds. To figure out which mattered more (personality or emotions). The CMU team interviewed 193 healthy adults. The researchers talked to each person over the phone every evening for 2 weeks. They told the researchers about the positive and negative feelings that they had experienced that day.The results showed that everyone in the study was equally likely to get infected. Their symptoms, however, differed depending on the types of emotions that they had reported over the previous 2 weeks.Among those who reported good moods and had been infected with the flu virus, for example, 28 percent developed coughs and stuffy (堵塞) noses. On the other hand, those symptoms struck 41 percent of people who had been less positive. Scientists argue about whether negative emotions or positive emotions have a stronger effect on how healthy we are, For now, it can not hurt to look on the bright side more often than not.26. What is the text mainly about?A. How to get rid of colds.B. Attitude determines life.C. Smiles turn away colds.D. Different opinions about colds.27. The phrase” full of vim and vigor”underlined in Paragraph 1 probably means______.A. ignorantB. Well-informedC. energeticD. in low spirits28. According to the research, persons who are likely to catch colds should be those __________?A. Who have negative attitude towards their life.B. Who are very emotional and optimistic.C. Who are open-minded and outgoing.D. Who have trouble with their noses29. The last paragraph implies that __________.A. positive and negative emotions have good aspects.B. people who have been less positive tend to catch colds.C. keeping an optimistic state of mind is good for health.D. positive emotions have a stronger effect on health.CComic Strips(连环漫画)For hundreds of years, artists have used cartoons to criticize bad rulers or landowners. As early as the 19th century, people produced and read books of drawing. In many ways, they were similar to modern comics. They contained stories of naughty children and playful animals. The owl(猫头鹰)and the elephant were usually wise animals, ready to give advice. The lion and the tiger were brave. The fox and the wolf were cunning(狡猾的) greedy(贪婪的) and dangerous.A century ago, an American newspaper published the first full-colour comic strip. It was so popular that sales of the newspaper, Morning Journal, increased quickly. Since then, newspapers throughout the world have included comic strips. In modern times, comics are popular in China, Japan, the USA and almost everywhere. Not even video games or CD-ROMs have reduced their popularity. Names such as Snoopy, Woodstock and Garfield are well known in dozens of countries. The Peanuts comic strip appears in over 2,000 newspapers and in more than 25 languages. People believe that its creator, Charles M. Schultz, earned US$60 million a year.Perhaps one day, you may like to create your own comic strip and become a millionaire. First, you must think of a good plot. It should be funny, exciting or interesting in some way. It should have plenty of action. Moreover, the language must be realistic and simple. The words should suit the characters in your story. One type of person might say, “Please be quiet and listen to what we have to say.” But another type of character might simply say, “Shut up and listen!”Furthermore, the characters in your story must be clear to readers. They should be obviously good or bad --- and not a mixture of both. A leader must be stronger orcleverer than his or her followers. In many comic strips ---- especially those showing crime of adventure ---- there should also be a hero or heroine. This will attract the reader to keep on reading the story.30. Some people performed well in the “social”tests, but others were affected badly--- and overall, performance dropped.Women appear to feel this pressure more than men---only three out of 13 female volunteers performed well in a social environment, with 10 out of 13 finding that their performance dropped. The researchers used a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanner to monitor how people’s brains responded--- and found that bad performers tended to show activity in parts of their brain that dealt with emotions and anxiety.“We started with individuals who were matched for their IQ,”said Montague. “Yet when we placed them in small groups, ranked their performance on tasks against their peers, and broadcast the rankings, we saw dramatic drops in the ability of some study subjects to solve problems.”“Our study highlights the unexpected and dramatic consequences even subtle social signals in group settings may have on the individual,” said lead author Keneth Kishida.“We don’t know how much these effects are present in real-world settings. By placing an emphasis on competition, for example, are we missing a large segment of the talent pool?”33. Which of the following statements is Not true according to the passage?A. Meetings make groups of people stupider.B. Meetings make you act brain dead.C. Meetings make people perform worse on intelligence tests.D. Meetings don’t affect men’s performance in intelligence tests.34. This passage can be classified as __________.A. An advertisementB. a book reviewC. Due to his old age, he was going bald, which made him feel too cold to swim in the pool. Therefore, biologists at the academy had a wet suit created for this penguin to help him get back in the swimming pool.Unlike marine mammals, which have a layer of blubber to keep them warm, penguins depend on their waterproof feathers. Without them, Pierre was unwilling to jump into the swimming pool and ended up trembling on the side of the pool while his 19 peers played in the water.“He was cold; he would shake,”said Pam Schaller, a senior biologist. Schaller first tried a heat lamp to keep Pierre warm. Then she got another idea: if wet suits keep humans warm in the cold Pacific, why not make one for Pierre?Schaller designed the suit, which covered Pierre’s body and had small openings for his flippers.“I would walk behind him and look at where there were any gaps, and cut and refit and cut and refit until it looked like it was extremely suitable,”she said. One concern was that the other penguins would reject Pierre in his new suit, but in fact, they accepted his new look. He swam freely and got along with others well, although he was the only penguin with a black stomach.Schaller couldn’t say for sure whether the wet suit allowed Pierre to recover his fine feathers, but “certainly we were able to keep him comfortable during a period of time that would have been very difficult for him to stay comfortable”.Pierre will take off his suit after his new feathers grow back.1. It' s also quite normal for top managers from department stores to spend a day or two each month visiting stores and mixing freely with the public, as if they were ordinary customers, to get an idea of how customers act.Another way to get information from customers is to give them something. For example, some fast food restaurants give away tickets in magazines or on the street that permit customers to get part of their meal for nothing. As well as being a good way of attracting customers into the restaurants to spend their money, it also allows the managers to get a feel for where to attract customers and which age-groups to attract.Another strategy used at some well-known parks such as Disneyland is for top managers to spend at least one day in their work, touting the park dressed as Mickey Mouse or something like that. This provides them with a perfect chance to examine the scene and watch the customers without being noticed.36. The text is designed for _______A. mangersB. salesmenC. researchersD. customers37. Flags were also flown there to warn sailors of bad weather. It's fitting, then, the Italian Gulielmo Marconi should have chosen this site to receive the world's first radio signal—in Morse code—from England on December 12,1901.Marconi, combining earlier ideas with his own, led us to a new communications age. For the next 50 years, until the appearance of television, radio ruled the air waves.Today, it's the TV that rules. No single person can say to have invented television. In 1884, the German Paul Nipkow invented a device that sent pictures mechanically, and in 1906, Boris Rosing, a Russian, used a ray and a disc to create the world's first TV system. Then in the early 1920s, another Russian, Vladimir Zworykin, invented a picture display tube. He took out a patent for color TV, even though it wouldn't be developed for another 25 years. In 1924, a Scot entered the scene—John Logic Baird. He first succeeded in sending a moving picture and a year later got the first actual TV picture. In 1926,Baird showed TV in a London laboratory. Two years later in New York, Felix the Cat became the first TV star.TV excited everyone's imagination, but hardly anyone had a set, with just two thousand in use worldwide in the mid-1930s.Since the late 1940s,TV technology has developed very quickly. Computers may finally be combined with all televisions to give people a total all-in-one communications network.Today, it's possible to sit and watch TV in the middle of a forest or in the Arctic. It's surprising when one considers that Marconi was on Signal Hill in the same century.43. The scientific process and the knowledge produced cannot be considered to be ends in themselves, except for the classical scientist. A student should understand the relation of basic research to applied research, and the connection between technological developments and human affairs. More of technology than science will be involved in social decisions, but both are important in public policy. The knowledge and methods of science are of little importance if there is no inclination to use them properly . An open mind, a desire for accurate knowledge, confidence in the procedures for seeking knowledge, and the expectation that the solution of problems will come from the use of tested and proven knowledge—these are among the “scientific attitudes”.Science instruction should acquaint students with career possibilities in technical fields and in science teaching. A continuous effort should be made to identify and encourage those who develop special interests. They should be given opportunities for some direct experience of a professional nature;they should also learn about the extent of the various science fields and how these fields are related to each other.
