B Some parents will buy any high-tech toy if they think it will help their child, but researchers said puzzles help children with math-related skills. Psychologist Susan Levine, an expert on mathematics development in young children at the University of Chicago, found children who play with puzzles between ages 2 and 4 later develop better spatial skills. Puzzle play was found to be a significant predictor of cognition (认知) after controlling for differences in parents’ income, education and the amount of parent talk, Levine said. The researchers analyzed video recordings of 53 child-parent pairs during everyday activities at home and found children who play with puzzles between 26 and 46 months of age have better spatial skills when assessed at 54 months of age. “The children who played with puzzles performed better than those who did not, on tasks that assessed their ability to rotate(旋转 )and translate shapes,” Levine said in a statement. The parents were asked to interact with their children as they normally would, and about half of the children in the study played with puzzles at one time. Higherincome parents tended to have children play with puzzles more frequently, and both boys and girls who played with puzzles had better spatial skills. However, boys tended to play with more complex puzzles than girls, and the parents of boys provided more spatial language and were more active during puzzle play than parents of girls. The findings were published in the journal Developmental Science.

Perhaps this is not a surprise. It's said that(据说)history is written by the victors(胜利者),and those victors set the standards(标准)for admission(允许进入,入场费)to the genius club. When contributions were made by geniuses outside the club—women,or people of a different color or belief—they were unacknowledged(不被认可的,不被承认的)and rejected(拒绝)by others.A study recently found that as young as age six, girls are less likely than boys to say that members of their gender(性别)are“really, really smart.”Even worse(更糟糕的是),the study found that girls act on(按…行事)that belief(信念):Around age six they start to avoid(避免)activities said to be for children who are“really, really smart.”Can our planet afford to(经受得起,买得起)have any great thinkers become discouraged(挫败的,没有勇气的)and give up?It doesn't take a genius to know the answer: absolutely not. Here's the good news.In a wired(联网的,焦虑的)world with constant(连续不断的)global communication,we're all positioned to see(处于做…的位置)flashes of genius wherever they appear. And the more we look, the more we will see that social factors(因素)like gender, race,(the+比较级…the+比较级.越…越…)and class do not determine(决定)the appearance of genius. As a writer says, future geniuses come from those with“intelligence, creativity, perseverance(毅力),and simple good fortune, who are able to(能够)change the world.”12.What does the author think of victors'standards for joining the genius club?A.They're unfair.B.They're conservative(保守的).C.They're objective(客观的).D.They're strict.(严格的,严肃的)13.What can we infer about girls from the study in Science?A.They think themselves smart(聪明的).B.They look up to(尊敬)great thinkers.C.They see gender differences earlier than boys.D.They are likely to(可能)be influenced(影响)by social beliefs14.Why are more geniuses known to the public?A.Improved global communication.B.Less discrimination(歧视)against women.C.Acceptance of victors'concepts(理念,概念).D.Changes in people's social positions.15.What is the best title for the text?A.Geniuses Think Alike(相似)B.Genius Takes Many FormsC.Genius and IntelligenceD.Genius and Luck【答案】12.A13.D14.A15.B【导语】这是一篇议论文。

【2023年高考真题】I was about 13 when an uncle gave me a copy of Jostein Gaarder’s Sophie’s World. It was full of ideas that were new to me, so I spent the summer with my head in and out of that book. It spoke to me and brought me into a world of philosophy (哲学).That love for philosophy lasted until I got to college. Nothing kills the love for philosophy faster than people who think they understand Foucault, Baudrillard, or Confucius better than you — and then try to explain them.Eric Weiner’s The Socrates Express: In Search of Life Lessons from Dead Philosophers reawakened my love for philosophy. It is not an explanation, but an invitation to think and experience philosophy.Weiner starts each chapter with a scene on a train ride between cities and then frames each philosopher’s work in the context (背景) of one thing they can help us do better. The end result is a read in which we learn to wonder like Socrates, see like Thoreau, listen like Schopenhauer, and have no regrets like Nietzsche. This, more than a book about understanding philosophy, is a book about learning to use philosophy to improve a life.He makes philosophical thought an appealing exercise that improves the quality of our experiences, and he does so with plenty of humor. Weiner enters into conversation with some of the most important philosophers in history, and he becomes part of that crowd in the process by decoding (解读) their messages and adding his owninterpretation. The Socrates Express is a fun, sharp book that draws readers in with its apparent simplicity and gradually pulls them in deeper thoughts on desire, loneliness, and aging. The invitation is clear: Weiner wants you to pick up a coffee or tea and sit down with this book. I encourage you to take his offer. It’s worth your time, even if time is something we don’t have a lot of.1.Who opened the door to philosophy for the author?A.Foucault.B.Eric Weiner.C.Jostein Gaarder.D.A college teacher.2.Why does the author list great philosophers in paragraph 4?A.To compare Weiner with them.B.To give examples of great works.C.To praise their writing skills.D.To help readers understand Weiner’s book.3.What does the author like about The Socrates Express?A.Its views on history are well-presented.B.Its ideas can be applied to daily life.C.It includes comments from readers.D.It leaves an open ending.4.What does the author think of Weiner’s book?A.Objective and plain.B.Daring and ambitious.C.Serious and hard to follow.D.Humorous and straightforward.【高考真题变式题1】About a decade ago, Lawson was at a beach in Virginia watching his kids build castles right next to the waves.“I kept trying to get them to come back because I thought it was a terrible idea,” he remarked. He wanted them to build their sandcastles closer to the dunes. But they found it more exciting to build right where the waves hit, seeing their sandcastles get destroyed, and then rebuilding them with whatever debris (残骸) washed up from theocean. “It seemed so symbolic, somehow, of how life works more than just building your perfect sandcastles,” said Lawson. When he decided to turn that sunny day into a children’s book, the idea came to just use pictures. “It seemed like it would work beautifully without words,” he said.A Day for Sandcastles is illustrated by Qin Leng. It’s the second wordless picture book for Lawson and Leng since 2021’s Over the Shop. Leng’s illustrations stay pretty true to real life. Three siblings spend the day building sandcastles and watching them get destroyed by a flying hat. “To me it’s a celebration of childhood and the simple joys of life. These are the things I like to capture,” said Leng.Leng spent part of her childhood in France, and she was inspired by European comic books “What I love to do when I illustrate a picture book is add side stories to the main storyline. I always think about the readers and the longevity of the book, and I want them to be able to discover something new every time they revisit the book,” Leng explained. At the end of the day, the sleepy-eyed kids pile into the bus that will take them home. “Those last pages are some of my favorite. They capture that feeling like at the end of the day on the beach, when it’s getting dark and you feel completely exhausted,” Lawson said. It must be a universal childhood feeling: happy with sand, sticky from the salt, hot from the sun, and ready to fall asleep the moment you get into the car.5.Why does Lawson mention the scene where the kids built sandcastles?A.To suggest a way to enjoy leisure.B.To tell us the inspiration for his book.C.To convince us of how life works.D.To remind readers of the childhood.6.What do you know about the two books mentioned?A.The stories are literally works of fantasy.B.They are purchased by kids universally.C.They carry no elements of comic books.D.Readers can only find pictures in them.7.How does Lawson feel when telling us the last pages in the last paragraph?A.Pleased.B.Indifferent.C.Disturbed.D.Exhausted.8.What can be a suitable title for the passage?A.Childhood in sandcastles B.Beautiful childhood memoriesC.Popular illustrated books D.Explore the mystery of nature【高考真题变式题2】A new picture book called When Dinosaurs Conquered the Skies: The Incredible Story of Bird Evolution explains the scientific idea that birds are dinosaurs. The writer Jingmai O’Connor describes herself on Instagram as a “dead bird fan”. With her PhD, she works at the Chicago Field Museum as an expert on the evolution of birds and flying dinosaurs.O’Connor says people may know that birds are little dinosaurs. But they might not connect that fact to the birds they see. One purpose of her book, she said, is to achieve it. O’Connor also wants people to see birds as she does — as fascinating flying dinosaurs. In her book, O’Connor also talks about the larger idea of science — namely the importance of making mistakes. Each mistake, she said, leads us closer to the truth.“Science is essentially a series of mistakes. And every mistake, you know, informs us a little bit more and gives us a little bit more information. But pretty much everything that we think is ‘truth’ right now is probably at least partly wrong. You know, there is so much we don’t know. But mistakes are part of the process.”O’Connor is a Chinese-Irish American who grew up in Pasadena, California. She did not always want to study the remains of ancient living things. She began studying geology, like her mother. “But in my case, my mother went back to school to do her PhD when I was around 10 years old. And so, she had four kids…So, she would take us with her to not only the laboratory, but also into the field, which means going out to collect samples. So, I fell in love with geology.”However, O’Connor had a larger goal in mind when she wrote her book. She said, “Through having greater respect for the living animals around us, I hope that people start to think more about how they impact the environment through their actions, so that we can all move towards a more sustainable future.”9.Which is one of the goals of O’Connor’s book according to Paragraph 2?A.To make connections.B.To write a review.C.To give instructions.D.To make a profit.10.What does O’Connor think of mistakes?A.Unavoidable.B.Meaningless.C.Invaluable.D.Uncontrollable.11.What can be learned from Paragraph 4 about the author?A.She had complex social relationships.B.She wanted to be a geology teacher.C.Her mother was her geology teacher.D.Her mother had early effects on her.12.What does O’Connor expect of her readers?A.Being mindful of what they will say.B.Creating a more sustainable lifestyle.C.Organizing more outdoor activities.D.Trying to make use of the findings.【高考真题变式题3】I have always loved the Arthurian legend (传奇), as there is something quite special about King Arthur, and of course Merlin, my favourite character from the stories.Death of an Empire is the second volume in MK Hume’s “Merlin” series which details Merlin’s life from birth. Merlin travels across the Roman Empire in search of his father, a voyage of discovery to understand just who he was. Eventually Merlin gets involved in the fight against the Hun’s invasion (入侵) of Europe at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plain.Serving under the General Flavius Aetius, Merlin builds a reputation by saving the lives of thousands of soldiers. When he finally reaches Rome, he saves many more. But a far deadlier conflict between Emperor Valentinian and Senator Petronius Maximus is around the corner and Merlin must use all his strength to carry out his work.If I had to choose just one word to describe this novel, there would be no other choice than “immersive (身临其境的)”. There has clearly been a serious amount of research carried out by the author. Combined with the descriptive prose and imaginative story, the book really does attract you from almost the very start. The story really does feel like you are a part of it as Merlin travels across the Roman Empire. The author does a great job of mixing the rich history with established Arthurian legend. The battle scene is handled very effectively. The author employs a very effective form to show the main fight and this not only adds a degree of tension and a good level of excitement but almost makes you feel like you are right there hearing about what happened.Death of an Empire is a very fine novel, a wonderfully rich tale and a rewarding story.13.Why does Merlin travel across the Roman Empire?A.To visit King Arthur.B.To enjoy a nice view.C.To get a well-paid job.D.To find out his origin.14.What can we learn about the novel?A.It is a mixture of history and legend.B.It features difficult language.C.It speaks highly of an emperor.D.It is a masterpiece of Merlin.15.What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 5 refer to?A.An effective description.B.A long-running battle.C.A wonderful feeling.D.A well-known legend.16.What is the text?A.A news report.B.A history story.C.A book review.D.A science fiction.【高考真题变式题4】Technology seems to discourage slow reading. Reading on screens tires eyes easily. So online writing is more skimmable than print. The neuroscientist Mary Walt argued this “new norm” of skim reading is producing “an invisible, dramatic transformation” in how readers process words. And brains now favor rapid absorption of information, rather than skills developed by deeper reading, like critical analysis. We shouldn’t overplay this danger. All readers skim. Skimming is the skill we acquire as we learn to read more skillfully. And fears about declining attention spans have proved to be false alarms. “Some critics worry about attention span and see very short stories as signs of cultural decline, ” The American author Selvin wrote. “But nobody ever said poems were evidence of short attention spans. ”Yet the Internet has certainly changed the way we read. First, it means there’s more to read, because more people than ever are writing. And digital writing means rapid release and response. Once published, online articles start forming a comment string underneath. Such mode of writing and reading can be interactive and fun, but is probably lacking in profound reflection.Perhaps we should slow down. Reading is constantly promoted as a source of personal achievement. But thisadvocacy emphasizes “enthusiastic” or “eager” reading — neither suggest slow absorption. To a slow reader, a piece of writing can only be fully understood by immersing oneself in their slow comprehension of words. The slow reader is like a swimmer who stops counting the number of pool laps he’s done and just enjoys how his body feels and moves in water. The human need for this kind of deep reading is too determined for any new technology to destroy. We often assume technological change can’t be stopped, so older media are kicked out by newer, more virtual forms. In practice, older technologies can coexist with new ones. The Kindle hasn’t killed off printed books any more than cars killed off bicycles. We still want to enjoy slowly-formed ideas and carefully-chosen words. Even in a fast-moving age, there is time for slow reading.17.What is the author’s attitude towards Selvin’s opinion?A.Favorable.B.Critical.C.Doubtful.D.Objective.18.Which statement would the author probably agree with?A.Advocacy of passionate reading helps promote slow reading.B.Digital writing and reading tends to ignore careful reflection.C.We should be aware of the impact skimming has on the brain.D.The number of Internet readers declines due to technology.19.Why is “swimmer” mentioned in paragraph 4?A.To demonstrate how to immerse oneself in thought.B.To stress swimming differs from reading.C.To show slow reading is better than fast reading.D.To illustrate what slow reading is like.20.Which would be the best title for the passage?A.Slow Reading is Here to StayB.Technology Prevents Slow ReadingC.Reflections on Deep ReadingD.The Wonder of Deep Reading对高三学生而言,就是要通过训练转化为学生的答题能力。

直击2023高考英语(乙卷) 阅读理解 话题3 饮食文化
直击2023高考英语(乙卷)阅读理解话题3 饮食文化一、2023真题(共4题;共8分)阅读理解What comes into your mind when you think of British food? Probably fish and chips, or a Sunday dinner of meat and two vegetables. But is British food really so uninteresting? Even though Britain has a reputation for less-than-impressive cuisine, it is producing more top class chefs who appear frequently on our television screens and whose recipe books frequently top the best seller lists. It's thanks to these TV chefs rather than any advertising campaign that Britons are turning away from meat-and-two-veg and ready-made meals and becoming more adventurous in their cooking habits. It is recently reported that the number of those sticking to a traditional diet is slowly declining and around half of Britain's consumers would like to change or improve their cooking in some way. There has been a rise in the number of students applying for food courses at UK universities and colleges. It seems that TV programmes have helped change what people think about cooking.According to a new study from market analysts, 1 in 5 Britons say that watching cookery programmes on TV has encouraged them to try different food. Almost one third say they now use a wider variety of ingredients (配料) than they used to, and just under 1 in 4 say they now buy better quality ingredients than before. One in four adults say that TV chefs have made them much more confident about expanding their cookery knowledge and skills, and young people are also getting more interested in cooking. The UK's obsession (痴迷) with food is reflected through television scheduling. Cookery shows and documentaries about food are broadcast more often than before. With an increasing number of male chefs on TV, it's no longer "uncool" for boys to like cooking.1.(2分)What do people usually think of British food?A.It is simple and plain.B.It is rich in nutrition.C.It lacks authentic tastes.D.It deserves a high reputation.2.(2分)Which best describes cookery programmes on British TV?A.Authoritative.B.Creative.C.Profitable.D.Influential.3.(2分)Which is the percentage of the people using more diverse ingredients now?A.20%.B.24%.C.25%.D.33%.4.(2分)What might the author continue talking about?A.The art of cooking in other countries.B.Male chefs on TV programmes.C.Table manners in the UK.D.Studies of big eaters.二、冲刺练(共4题;共32分)5.(8分)阅读理解There is more of a connection between food and culture than you may think. On an individual level, we grow up eating the food of our culture. It becomes a part of who we are. Many associate food from our childhood with warm feelings and good memories and it ties us to our families, holding a special and personal value for us. Food from our family often becomes the comfort food we seek as adults in times of frustration and stress. On a large scale, traditional food is an important part of culture. It also operates as an expression of culture identity. Immigrants bring itwherever they go, and it is a symbol of pride for their culture and means of coping with homesickness. Many immigrants open their own restaurants and serve traditional dishes. However, the food does not remain exactly the same. Some materials needed to make traditional dishes may not be readily available, so the taste and flavor can be different from what they would prepare in their home countries. Additionally, immigrants do not only sell dishes to people from the same countries as them, but to people from different countries. Therefore, they have to make small changes about the original dishes to cater to a wider range of customers. Those changes can create new flavors that still keep the cultural significance of the dishes. We should embrace our heritage(传统)through our culture's food but also become more informed about other cultures by trying their food. It is important to remember that each dish has a special place in the culture to which it belongs, and is special to those who prepare it. Food is a window into culture, and it should be treated as such.(1)(2分)What's the function of food mentioned in the article?A.To help motivate homesickness.B.To show national identity.C.To reflect a country's history.D.To show a community's superiority.(2)(2分)What does the underlined "it" in Paragraph2 refer to?A.The specific traditional food.B.The national culture.C.A traditional expression of food.D.The old-fashioned taste.(3)(2分)Why do some immigrants have to change the original dishes in their restaurant?A.To attach cultural importance to their dishes.B.To announce the beginning of their life on foreign soil.C.To make the dishes popular among customers.D.To present their own food culture in a new way.(4)(2分)What's the author's attitude towards different food cultures?A.Negative.B.Balanced.C.Unfair.D.Unchangeable. 6.(10分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

You can do anything that you put your mind and your heart to,” she said.Alena is the youngest African American person to get into a US medical school, and the second-youngest person overall.Alena didn’t just wake up one day and decide to go to the medical school while in middle school — she’s a child genius. By the time she was 11 she’d already taken several high school courses. When Alena turned 12, she graduated from high school and is currently enrolled (注册) in online classes at Arizona State University. If all goes to plan for Alena, she’ll start studying to be a doctor at age 15, in 2024, and graduate when she’s 18 when other kids her age are preparing for their freshmen year at college. I’m very structured and very disciplined.”4.Why does the author mention the high schoolers’ college application?A.To show how fortunate Alena is.B.To explain high schoolers’ difficult life.C.To present preferences of high schoolers.D.To stress how unusual Alena is to get the offer.5.What does the underlined word “adamant” in paragraph 2 mean?A.Determined.B.Qualified.C.Innocent.D.Patient.6.What can be inferred about Alena?A.She is now studying in a high school.B.She is taking online university classes.C.She will become a doctor at the age of 15.D.She is the youngest to get into a US medical school.7.Which of the following can best describe Alena’s life?A.Stressful but hopeful.B.Cheerful but meaningless.C.Rich and colorful.D.Simple and free.(2022秋·安徽六安·高三统考期末)COnline classes began to be popularized just a few decades ago. They are advertised as a way for adults to finish their education and students to learn the material at their own pace—it is far more suitable for people with busy schedules. But after being enrolled in an online course last fall semester, I came to realize online classes were merely a means to fulfil course requirements.First of all, students lack the desire to learn, and they simply complete their assignments to receive credit for a passing grade rather than genuinely engage with the course material. As online courses tend to have more than 100 students, most of the assignments are short and simple. They are not designed for students to interact with the material in depth but designed to be graded easily to accommodate such a large number of students.Perhaps the biggest disadvantage of taking an online class is the absence of face-to-face interaction between the teacher and their students. Live sessions are infrequent and are often scheduled during the middle of the day when students have to attend other classes or work. The office hours of the professor may also be during inconvenient times for many students as well. Most interaction with the professor has to be through email which is often impersonal. It is nearly impossible for students to build a relationship with their professor. There is also little interaction among students. It can be harder for students to create study groups and form relationships with their peers.Online classes also require either a computer or laptop and a reliable Internet connection. Not all students have access to these types of resources, whether it is for financial or other reasons, and some students can be put at a disadvantage. Offering online classes certainly helps students who would otherwise not be able to attend classroom sessions. However, they fail to provide a true education with an emphasis on convenience rather than critical thinking. We need restructure online classes in which students can have a learning experience that will actually provide quality education.8.What can we infer about students enrolled in online classes?A.They are unmotivated to learn,B.They can access course materials easily.C.They rarely fulfil the course requirements.D.They can learn at their own pace.9.What is the author’s opinion about online course assignments? ‘A.They are meant to facilitate interaction.B.They are made convenient to mark.C.They are given to accommodate students` needs.D.They are based on easily accessible material.10.From the passage, which is one disadvantage of online classes?A.They make professors’ offices much less accessible.B.They are frequently scheduled at irregular times.C.They provide little chance for students to build relationships with each other.D.They tend to increase professors’ burden of replying students’ emails.11.What problem may arise if classes go online?A.Teachers will worry about poor Internet connections.B.Most students may get critical thinking skills from it.C.Schools with limited resources will be at a disadvantage.D.Some students may have difficulty attending them.(2022秋·江苏南通·高三统考期末)DIn the coming era of budget cuts to education, distance learning could become a common thing. The appeal to those in charge of education budgets to trade teachers for technology is so strong that they tend to ignore the disadvantages of distance learning. School facilities are expensive to build and maintain, and teachers are expensive to employ. It’s true that online classes do not require buildings and each class can host hundreds of people, which can result in greater savings, but moving away from a traditional classroom in which a living, breathing human being teaches and interacts with students daily would be a disaster.Physically attending school has hidden benefits: getting up every morning interacting with peers, and building relationships with teachers are important skills to cultivate in young people. Moreover, schools are more than simple places of traditional learning. They are also places that provide meals, places where students receivemental help and other support. Those policy-makers are often fascinated by the latest technology in education and its potential to transform education overnight. But online education does not allow a teacher to keep a struggling student after class and offer help. Educational videos may deliver academic content, but they are unable to make eye contact or assess a student’s level of engagement. Distance education will never match the personal teaching in a traditional classroom. In their first 18 years of life, American children spend only 9% of their time in school. Yet teachers are expected to prepare them to be responsible citizens, cultivate their social skills, encourage successful time management, and enhance their capacity to compete in a competitive job market. Given these expectations, schools should not become permanently “remote”.The power of the classroom is rooted in the qualities of the people gathered in the same place, at the same time, including their nature, empathy, devotion and so on. Technology, no matter how advanced, should simply be a tool of a good teacher.12.What is one possible benefit of students attending school physically?A.Forming the habit of getting up early.B.Eating nutritionally well-balanced meals.C.Growing into living and breathing human beings.D.Developing relationships with peers and teachers.13.What does the author think of the latest technology in education?A.It may reduce face-to-face interaction.B.It may make many teachers jobless.C.It may add to student’s financial burden.D.It may revolutionize classroom teaching.14.What does the author say teachers are expected to do?A.To enhance student’s leadership capacity.B.To teach students skills in applying for jobs.C.To enable students to adapt to the changes in life.D.To prepare students to be competitive in the future.15.Why couldn’t technology replace a good teacher?A.It lacks humanity.B.It can’t meet personal needs.C.It is still not advanced.D.It can’t track students’ growth.二、七选五(2023·山东枣庄·统考一模)It’s the start of a new academic year.

B(2023·河南·校联考一模)As I stood in line waiting to cash out at my favorite retail store, I studied the customer in front of me. She was young, maybe early twenties. But she already had a tired look to her. Her face looked drawn from exhaustion. Her thin, unbuttoned winter coat had seen those bad days. The items in her cart included the cheapest cuts of meat. Powdered milk, day-old bread, bargain soap, and inexpensive shampoo completed her purchases — well, almost.“Next!” When the cashier finally told her the cost, the woman’s face paled. She opened a purse and began counting small bills and change. It was obvious she didn’t have enough, and she scanned her groceries to see what she could do without. One by one, she removed things, but she still came up short. She continued to discard much-needed goods while the cashier set them aside patiently. The child’s items remained in the cart, however. The woman finally paid, and moved down to bag them. When my turn came, I moved forward and placed several items the woman had taken out, whispering “Separate bags, please” to the cashier. I wondered how I could sneak the extra things into the old cart she’d brought without being caught. My clerk solved the problem by “accidentally” rolling several oranges hard enough on the conveyer belt so that they flew past the lady and onto the floor.“I’ll get those,” the woman offered kindly and ran to pick up the runaway fruit. I quickly put the two extra bags into her cart. Just as I put the second one in, I noticed a twenty-dollar bill peeking out that I had not placed in there.“You put that money in there, didn’t you?” I accused the clerk with a laugh when I went to pay my bill. I was surprised when she shook her head. “No, it was her,” she replied, pointing to another woman. My small, insignificant gesture had rippled to become a larger kindness than I ever could have imagined. 1.What can we infer about the customer in front of “me” in Paragraph 1?A.She is a woman to think of others before herself.B.She pretended to be poor to gain other’s sympathy.C.Everything about her screamed hardship and need.D.Everything she chose wasn’t what she truly needed.2.What does the underlined word “discard” probably mean in Paragraph 2?A.Handle. B.Separate. C.Test out. D.Take out.3.Why did the clerk roll oranges hard enough on the conveyer belt?A.To do “me” a favor.B.To train her skill.C.To show her acting experience. D.To help increase grocery sales.4.What can be the best title for the text?A.Kindness in Giving Creates Love B.What Goes around Comes aroundC.Being Happy Is Enough D.More than a Coincidence【答案】1.C 2.D 3.A 4.A【导语】本文是一篇记叙文。
2023届高考英语阅读理解专练(3)故事类
(3)故事类一、I would mention a journey I made through France the summer after I graduated from college. I had just finished a seasonal job in Paris and was slowly making my way to Greece, where I was to live and teach for a year at Athens College. A business associate of my father's in Pontarlier, an industrial town near France's border with Switzerland, said that he was driving to join his family on the Mediterranean and would be happy to give me a lift.I joined him in Pontarlier, and we climbed into his luxury Peugeot and set south for Marseille. This man—Mr. D., I'll call him—was wealthy and fancied himself a connoisseur (鉴赏家) of great French food and wine. Like many Frenchmen, he also fancied himself something of a philosopher, and what could be better for a philosopher than a young, attentive, and captive listener? So he idled(使闲着) us south, stretching what today could be a 10-hour highway drive into a multiple-day moveable feast by taking the most scenic and snail's-paced-country lanes, stopping at great restaurants whenever the mood struck him, which was often, and discoursing(讲述) lovingly and at length on everything from language to politics to women. How could I complain? I was getting a ride to the Cote d'Azur—which danced all blue-green sea and sun-bright sand in my mind—in the air-conditioned comfort of an elegant Peugeot, and receiving a first-class education in French cuisine, and all for free!I recall that journey now as a range of images—long, straight, tree-bordered roads and Van Gogh fields, Renoir afternoons of dappled(斑驳的) sunlight and shade, rocky restaurant balconies bordered with bright flowers, laughter and the clink of glasses and the music of French filling the air. I remember drinking a great deal of what seemed to my uneducated nose and mouth to be extraordinarily flavourful red wine. Eventually we reached Marseille and parted company—both of us, I think, happy for the journey and for its end. In the following years, when summer arrives, I think of road trips.1.What is the function of the first paragraph?A.To introduce the topic of road trips.B.To stress the author's preference for summer road trips.C.To offer some basic information of a road trip.D.To show the author's purpose of a special road trip.2.What can we know about Mr. D.?A.He has a great talent for doing business.B.He considers himself an expert in a certain field.C.He is rather wealthy and a good listener.D.He is a philosopher fond of educating people.3.How did the author feel about the trip?A.Impressive and eye-opening.B. Unforgettable but short.C.Instructive and classic.D.Inspiring but tiring.4.What does the author mean in the last sentence?A.He missed Mr. D. very much.B.He can't help associating road trips with summer.C.He made road trips with his family every summer.D.He planned road trips with Mr. D. in the following summers.二、I remember going to the British Museum one day to read up the treatment for some slight illness—hay fever, I thought it was. I got down the book, and read all I came to read; and then, I began to casually study diseases generally. Turning over the pages, I came to typhoid fever, read the symptoms and discovered that I had it. I was wondering what else I had got, and St. Vitus's Dance turned up, which I thought I also had. So I determined to go through it thoroughly and so started alphabetically(照字母顺序排列的): ague I had, just in the acute stage. Cholera I had, with severe complications; and diphtheria I seemed to have been born with.I sat and considered. What an interesting case I must be from a medical point of view! What a learning material I should be to a medical class! Students would have no need to “walk the hospitals”, if they had me. I was a hospital in myself. All they need do would be to walk around me, and, after that, take their diploma!I went to my doctor, who is an old friend of mine. I thought I would do him a good turn by going to him now. “What a doctor wants”, I said, “is practice. He will get more practice out of me than out of 1,700 of his ordinary, commonplace patients, with only one or two diseases each.” He said: “Well, what's the matter with you?” I said, “Iwill not take up your time, with telling you what is the matter with me. But I will tell you what is not the matter with me. I have not got a housemaid's knee(髌前囊炎). Everything else, however, I have g ot.” And I told him how I came to discover it all. He felt my pulse, looked at my tongue, and talked about the weather as usual, all for nothing. Then he wrote out a prescription, folded it up and gave it to me, and I put it in my pocket and went out. I did not open it. I took it to the nearest chemist's and handed it in. The man read it and then handed it back. I read the prescription. It ran: "beefsteak, every 6 hours.ten-mile walk every morning.bed at 11 sharp every night. And don't stuff up your head with things you don't understand."5.Why did the author go to the British Museum the other day?A. This honor is given by The National Association of Realtors(NAR) in the US. Working alongside her husband Dr. David Brown, she has been transforming abandoned mobile homes into villages of tiny homes that offer permanent housing to homeless people. Together, and with the help of numerous localvolunteers, they have developed Eden Village, a unique hub of tiny homes.Mrs. Brown told Goodnet, "My motivation is a dream that Missouri will be a city where no one sleeps outside and the joy is seeing the life change in our friends whom society has given up on."The wish to help homeless people, and restore their dignity and self-worth, as Mrs. Brown explained, had been a joint mission for some years. The couple ran a local evening drop-in center for local homeless people called Gardening Tree, for almost a decade. This functioned as a shelter where people experiencing homelessness could grab a bite, shower, do laundry and relax. But they wanted to do more than what Dr. Brown called a "band-aid". This desire stems from their philosophy that the homeless can get a new life once they have a roof over their heads. With the help of local organizations, the husband and wife team succeeded in raising almost $5 million, which enabled them to transform unused mobile homes and a ruined trailer park into a small village of tiny homes that opened in 2018. They named this place Eden Village, reflecting the sanctuary(庇护) it offers its residents. As Mrs. Brown said in her award acceptance speech about her journey to creating Eden Village, helping homeless people is something personal. It happened while he was driving his garbage truck through wealthier neighbourhoods at night and seeing abandoned books. It aroused his desire to start rescuing books from the garbage. He used to take home between 50 and 60 books every morning. Eventually, he turned his book collection into a community library for children from low-income families. Colombia's capital city of Bogota has 19 public libraries. However, these libraries tend to be far away from where rural and poorer communities live. The option of buying new books is non-existent for families struggling to make ends meet.Gutiérrez's community library is a true representation of how one man's garbage can be another's treasure.Gutiérrez grew up poor, and his family could not afford to educate him beyond primary school. Nevertheless, his mother was a passionate reader and read stories to him every night. Her love for books left a deep impression on Gutiérrez.Today, his makeshift community library, called "The Strength of Words", occupies most of his home in southern Bogota, and is piled from floor to ceiling with fiction and non-fiction titles. Everything from school textbooks to storybooks can be found in his collection of more than 20.000 books! As word began to spread about his amazing project, people began sending him thousands more books to grow his library.Despite having done so much for his community, Gutiérrez is not yet content to call it a day. He continues to search through garbage cans for reading materials. Today, the Gutiérrez family does not merely want to start libraries in neighbourhoods. After all, just a few short years ago, he was living on the streets, couch-surfing at friends' houses and weeding gardens to make ends meet. Now, one of the world's leading political academics was preparing to welcome him to Queen's University over 4,000 miles away.Emanuel never knew who his father was and his mom was mentally ill when she gave birth to him, so the hospital took him off her and he was unofficially adopted for the first few years of his life. But at Union Station in Los Angeles last month, a board went up with dollar bills attached to it with pins and a sign that read, “Give What You Can, Take What You Need.”People quickly caught on. And while many took dollars, many others pinned their own cash to the board. “People of all ages, races, and socio-economic(社会经济的) backgrounds gave and took,” said Tyler Bridges of The Toolbox, which created the project. “We even had a bride in her wedding dress come up to the board and take a few dollars.” Most of the bills on the board were singles, but a few people left fives, tens and even twenties. The video clip(片段) shows one man who had found a $ 20 bill pinning it to the board.“What I can say for the folks that gave the most, is that they were full of smiles,” Bridges said. “There’s a certain feeling that giving can do for you and that was apparent in those that gave the most.” Most people who took dollars took only a few, but Bridges said a very small number took as much as they could. While the clip might look like part of a new ad campaign, Bridges said the only goal was to show generosity and sympathy. He added that he hopes people in other cities might try similar projects and post their own videos on the Internet.“After all, everyone has bad days and good days,” he said. “Some days you need a helping hand and some days you can be the one giving the helping hand.”1.What does the expression “money with no strings attached” in paragraph 1 mean?A.Money spent without hesitation.B.Money not legally made.C.Money offered without conditions.D.Money not tied together.2.What did Bridges want to show by mentioning the bride?A.Women tended to be more sociable.B.The activity attracted various people.C.Economic problems were getting worse.D.Young couples needed financial assistance.3.Why did Bridges carry out the project?A.To do a test on people’s morals.B.To raise money for his company.C.To earn himself a good reputation.D.To promote kindness and sympathy.【答案】1.C 2.B 3.D【解析】这是一篇新闻报道。

B
Clive was climbing an old tree on Butter Hill. His father and Mr. Drew were making conversation not far away, which Clive could overhear.
"... North Dakota, capital Bismarck," said Clive’s fa ther.
"Yes, and of S outh Dakota it’s Pierre. Delaware next, capital Dover, with a population of only 5,000... "
Clive listened, checking the names. When they got stuck on Indiana, he came down the tree and went across to them.
"Let me see now," Mr. Drew was saying. "Indiana, Indiana... the capital must be Fort Wayne. "
"No," said the other. "I think it’s Evansville."
"Indianapolis," said Clive. " That’s the easiest of all to remember."
Both the men laughed. "He’s right, you know," Mr. Drew said. Clive’s father agreed," Yes, yes. Indiana, Indianapolis. Now Kansas..."
Clive, who was thirteen then, was not very clever at school. But at the moment he felt rather proud of himself.
Looking back now, after many years, Clive remembers some of the ways he learned geography. One thing he remembers clearly is the " test" that took place every other week. The teacher used to pin up a big map on the board — China perhaps,or the United States, Australia or Europe — The map would have everything on it, except the names. The teacher, pointing with a long, wooden stick, began.
"Ready? Fifty questions. Number 1 — write the name of this river. Number 2 — the name of this state. 3 — its capital, here. 4 — the name of this bay. 5... "
Clive has quite forgotten whether he enjoyed learning geograph y or not. He didn’t consider the rights or wrongs. Though he has never studied geography since he left school, he has never forgotten it, he is glad about the way he learned. The work might have been dull, unexciting; but even so, the dullness has given him a lifetime of interest, understanding and pleasure.
