Dark, woolen topcoats were popular with teenage boys, but they could cost several hundred dollars. This coat was even better.John tried it on and turned from side to side, eyeing himself in the mirror. I guess I will.”When I mentioned this to one of his teachers, she joked that the coat must have changed him.John and I both know that clothes do not define a person, but there is something to be said for looking good. It protects and cleans the ear. It traps dirt and other matter, and it keeps insects out. Doctors think earwax might also help protect against infections. And the waxy oil keeps ears from getting too dry.But you can have too much of a good thing. Some people's ears produce too much wax. Earwax normally falls out of the ear or gets washed away. But extra wax can harden and form a blockage that interferes with sound waves and reduces hearing. People can also cause a blockage when they try to clean out their ears, but only push the wax deeper inside.Experts at the National Institutes of Health, NIH, suggest some ways to treat extra earwax yourself. The wax can be softened with mineral oil, glycerin or ear drops. Hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide may also help.Another way to remove wax is known as irrigation. With the head upright, take hold of the outer part of the ear. Gently pull upward to straighten the ear canal. Use a syringe device(洗涤器)to gently direct water against the wall of the ear canal. Then turn the head to the side to let the water out.The experts at NIH say you may have to repeat this process a few times. Use water that is body temperature. If the water is cooler or warmer, it could make you feel dizzy. Never try irrigation if the eardrum is broken. It could lead to infection and other problems.61. Which of the following is NOT the function of earwax?A. Keeping insects out.B. Protecting against infection.C. Keeping ears dry.D. Trapping dirt and other matter.62. The underlined sentence in Paragraph 2 probably means “_______”.A. Earwax has too many benefitsB. Too much earwax is producedC. Earwax can also bring problemsD. Earwax has more good than bad63. Psychologists have discovered that even the most independent-minded of us will conform to social pressure when we are with a group of people. In one classic experiment, people were shown a vertical(垂直的)line and asked to find a line of identical length from a selection of three. You might think that this is an absurdly easy task, and when people perform it by themselves they do it very well. However, psychologists have discovered that we are very easily swayed by the opinions of other people when we do this task in a group. In one study, a group of three people was set up, where two of the people were confederates(同伙)of the experimenter. When the confederates deliberately gave wrong answers, people were often swayed to give the wrong answer also. In fact, 75% of people gave at least one wrong answer, with some people conforming to peer pressure on every occasion. But why do people conform in this way? In an easy task like this, it seems that people do not want to step out of line with the prevailing opinion of the group. On more difficult tasks, people also conform because they lose confidence in their own ability to make decisions and prefer to trust the majority opinion instead.A typical example of this kind of conformity arises when we come across people in distress. Would you help a woman who has been attacked in the street? It turns out that you are much more likely to go to her assistance if you are alone. When other people are also around, a diffusion of responsibility occurs. People are paralysed into inaction, because everyone assumes that someone else will go to the woman's assistance.1. In Paragraph 1, the underlined word “conform” probably means “”.A. seek independenceB. disobey ordersC. follow what others doD. seek pleasure2. What is the purpose of the experiment described in Paragraph 2? A. To explain why people would be influenced by the opinions of others.B. To prove that people are easily influenced by the opinions of others.C. To train the confederates of the experimenter as independent-minded.D. To describe how people would be influenced by the opinions of others.3. In the last paragraph, according to the author, why wouldn’t one help the woman?A. He thinks he has no responsibilities to give a hand.B. He thinks he has nothing to do with it.C. He is too shy to give his helping hand.D. He thinks someone else will offer assistance.4. 工作中的乐趣作文英文翻译
工作中的乐趣作文英文翻译英文:Working with joy is a blessing in disguise. It not only makes the job easier but also adds a sense of fulfillment to it. For me, finding joy in work is all about doing what I love and being passionate about it.When I am doing something I love, time flies by, and I don't even realize how much I have accomplished. I am a writer, and writing is my passion. I enjoy the process of researching, organizing my thoughts, and putting them down on paper. When I am in the zone, I can write for hours without feeling tired or bored.Another thing that brings me joy at work is the people I work with. Having a supportive and friendly team can make the job much more enjoyable. I remember when I worked at a startup, and we were all working long hours to meet a deadline. Despite the stress and pressure, we found joy ineach other's company. We would crack jokes, share snacks, and encourage each other to keep going. It was a challenging time, but we managed to get through it with a smile on our faces.Lastly, being able to see the impact of my work brings me joy. Knowing that my writing has helped someone in some way is a great feeling. Whether it's educating someone on a new topic or inspiring them to take action, knowing that my work has made a difference is what motivates me to keep going.中文:在工作中找到乐趣是一种幸福。

Work Is A Blessing
(Work)
I grew up in Lakeland, La., one of 12 children. We all lived on my parents' subsistence farm. We grew cotton, sugar cane, corn, hogs, chickens and had a large garden, but it didn't bring in much cash. So when I was 12, I got a part-time job on a dairy farm down the road, helping to milk cows. We milked 65 cows at 5 in the morning and again at 2 in afternoon, seven days a week.
In the kitchen one Saturday before daylight, I remember complaining to my father and grandfather about having to go milk those cows. My father said, "Ya know, boy, to work is a blessing."
I looked at those two men who'd worked harder than I ever had — my father eking out a living on that farm and my grandfather farming and working as a carpenter during the Depression. I had a feeling I had been told something really important, but it took many years before it sank in.
Going to college was a rare privilege for a kid from Lakeland. My father told me if I picked something to study that I liked doing, I'd always look forward to my work. But he also added, "Even having a job you hate is better than not having a job at all." I wanted to be a farmer, but I joined the ROTC program to help pay for college. And what started out as an obligation to the Army became a way of life that I stayed committed to for 37 years, three months and three days.
In the late 1980s, during a visit to Bangladesh, I saw a woman with a baby on her back, breaking bricks with a hammer. I asked a Bangladesh military escort why they weren't using a machine, which would have been a lot easier. He told me a machine would put that lady out of work. Breaking those bricks meant she'd earn enough money to feed herself and her baby that day. And as bad as that woman's job was, it was enough to keep a small family alive. It reminded me of my father's words: To work is a blessing.
Serving in the U.S. Army overseas, I saw a lot of people like that woman in Bangladesh. And I have come to believe that people without jobs are not free. They are victims of crime, the ideology of terrorism, poor health, depression and social unrest. These victims become the illegal immigrants, the slaves of human trafficking, the drug dealers, the street gang members. I've seen it over and over again on the U.S. border, in Somalia, the Congo, Afghanistan and in New Orleans. People who have jobs can have a home, send their kids to school, develop a sense of pride, contribute to the good of the community, and even help others. When we can work, we're free. We're blessed.
I don't think I'll ever quit working. I'm retired from the Army, but I'm still working to help people be prepared for disaster. And I may get to do a little farming someday, too. I'm not going to stop. I believe in my father's words. I believe in the blessing of work.
