12. Smaller, Greener, Better
During my 15 years as an administrator, I was a no ﹣show at scientific conferences. Before that, my go ﹣to conferences included Metals in Biology in V entura, California. This past January, I went back to V entura after a 15﹣year _______. A lot of things struck me about how things have changed and how some things have stayed the same. One thing that is increasingly on people's minds is the future of scientific meetings.
What has stayed _______ is that a conference of that style, with 200 scientists from around the world, is a vital form for scientific exchange. The participants ranged from graduate students to the pioneers in the field of bioinorganic chemistry. It was interesting to see how far a lot of the science has come. Some fields still have great _______: Even though we know much more about the structures, we still wonder how the O ﹣O bond forms in
photosystem II(光合体系II).
One thing that has started to change _______ is the increasing number of women and people of color among conference speakers and participants. We are _______ close to solving the equity(公平) problems in science or science meetings, but the change in the _______ and atmosphere of meetings overall after 15 years is encouraging. This trend should continue, and more members should have speaking roles to showcase their science, and maybe small meetings could also require that a few talks be given by postdocs and early career faculty.
When it comes to big meetings, the interchange among scientists _______ is still essential. But it's time for the scientific community to engage in frank talk about the _______ of meetings on the climate. Some conferences have been supporting digital poster sessions to _______ waste, but thousands of folks flying to these meetings is the real problem to focus on. It's time to think creatively about how to reduce the carbon footprint of meetings while ________ ﹣even improving﹣their value.
What if we broke the large meetings into smaller, concurrent(同时发生的) ones at ________ sites where people could gather, sharing the drive or taking the train? Despite the big draw of large meetings, unless you're in the front rows of the big ballrooms where these are held, you're watching the speaker on a screen from the back or even in an overflow room. But in a concurrent sites model,________ conferences could be spread across different sites. This approach would lower the cost of ________ conferences and thereby potentially increase the number and diversity of attendees. A group of graduate students piling into a ________ is much more democratic than having to decide who gets to fly.
Scientific conferences are vital to scientists' collaboration. Continuing to improve them in terms of equity for both the participants and the climate is something we can't stop ________ to do. I volunteer to drive the first van.

文章大意:本文是一篇记叙文。

文章讲述了对于患有自闭症的6岁男孩杰克逊来说,理发是一件很困难的事情。

理发师里把艰难的一天变成了一场特殊的比赛。

14. Local barber (理发师) goes above and beyond for a little boy
“That day started all wrong,” LaQuista Erinna said. “And we forgot his headphones. We were running late, traffic was horrible, so I knew it was going to be difficult that day.”
When Erinna and her son finally arrived at their appointment, it seemed like there was no way 6-year-old Jackson, a boy with autism (自闭症), would be getting his hair cut.
“He just immediately got anxious,” Erinna explained. “Usually I have to do some coaching to get him in the chair. He will put on his headphones, and we power through.”
Erinna said Jackson is a typical little boy who loves to play and loves art. But some tasks can be sensory overload, and haircuts are one of them.
The stress was so intense for mom and son that almost two years went by before Jackson got another haircut. But this time, he was in the hands of Ree, the barber, and things were getting easier.
Ree noticed his Super Mario Bros shirt and told him that he needed to save Mario by making sure no hair got on him. She cut his hair while he moved and ran around the shop. She talked to him throughout the entire process, encouraging him and reminding him about protecting Mario to keep him engaged.
“It just touched me so much,” Erinna said: “She nurtured that relationship. She gained his trust.”
“I feel good I can go above and beyond for a child,” Ree said. “I know children want to be free. They want to express themselves so I try to find a different strategy to make them feel comfortable”
Jackson’s smile told the rest of the story.
Erinna was very moved by her son’s haircut. She shared a video online, which has gotten millions of views. Given the huge response, Erinna also set up a special GoFundMe to support Ree to make sure she’s able to continue to work and replace any lost income from the impact of the pandemic (流行病).

Some sports are resource-hungry.Golf, as you may know, eats up not only large areas of countryside, but also tons of water.Besides, all sorts of chemicals and huge amounts of energy are used to keep its courses (球场) in good condition. This causes major environmental effects. For example, in the dry regions of Portugal and Spain, golf is often held responsible for serious water shortage in some local areas.
There are many environment-friendly sports.Power walking is one of them that you could take up today.Y ou don’t need any special equipment except a good pair of shoes; and you don’t have to worry about resources and your purse.Simple and free, power walking can also keep you fit.If you walk regularly, it will be good for your heart and bones.Experts say that 20 minutes of power walking daily can make you feel less anxious, sleep well and have better weight control.
Whatever sport you take up, you can make it greener by using environment-friendly equipment and buying products made from recycled materials. But the final goal should be “green gyms”.They are better replacements for traditional health clubs and modern sports centers.Members of green gyms play sports outdoors, in the countryside or other open spaces. There is no special requirement for you to start your membership. And best of all, it’s free.
1. The author thinks the golf is resource-hungry because of the following EXCEPT that ________.

七、阅读理解
17. Imagine that you are in a remote village somewhere with no medical clinic. 1 Once the doctors get to you, they examine you and take
blood samples, but they won’t be able to help you until they take the samples back to the hospital to find out what is wrong. 2 Thanks to engineer Andy Ozcan, many people may never be in this situation. He has invented an app that turns your mobile phone into a diagnostic (诊断的) tool.
Ozcan’s invention is important because it is very accurate and easy to use. In many remote places, even if doctors have microscopes and other instruments to help them make diagnoses, there may still be other problems. Many doctors, for example, don’t have enough training to correctly interpret what they see. 3 With Ozcan’s mobile phone app, health workers can take a special photo of a blood sample and send it to a central computer at a hospital. The computer will then automatically interpret the photo and send a diagnosis back in a few minutes.
4 His technology only requires a mobile phone and an Internet connection. As more than four billion people already have cell phones, the
cost of establishing the diagnostic system is fairly low.
By inventing a medical tool that uses existing technology—mobile phones—Ozcan has developed a medical tool that is both practical and economical. Therefore, it can be effectively almost anywhere. 5
A.As a result, they may diagnose illnesses incorrectly.
B.People are trying to reduce the cost of this new medical tool.
C.This tool has become much more popular all around the world.
D.Another reason that Ozcan’s invention is important is that it is inexpensive.
E.You become very sick and must wait days until a mobile medical unit arrives to help.
F.Ozcan’s simple, cost-effective tool might just save millions of lives around the world.
G.Even though you may only have a simple infection, you might die because of the delay.
