第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
(6分)The one thing everyone loves to hate when it comes to the Internet—the user password—is under fire now.
21.
Actually, it’s been under fire for a long time.
In an ideal world, people would use a long string composed of completely random characters, numbers and symbols. Furthermore, a unique password would be used for every site or application the user uses. Unfortunately, the more complex the passwords become, the more people are likely to forget them. The longer the passwords are, the more easily forgotten they are. Therefore, people use the same password for every service or application. It is a no-no and extremely defeats the purpose of a password.
Google is trying to kill off the user password, at least on Android devices by introducing the Trust API, which does what simple passwords cannot. It gives developers a framework for securing their applications using a number of security system and metrics (衡量标准) on the device. A Trust Score will be generated based on the metrics the device gathers and will allow or deny access to applications based on whether or not your Trust Score is high enough.
The Trust Score will be generated based on metrics like your device location, face scanning and fingerprint, and the things like your typing speed or the way you speak. Taken one at a time, these metrics are not secure. But taken together, these metrics will help define the real “you”.
Passwords have been around since the dawn of computing and although the security of systems has been improved, they haven9t done much to improve the usability of systems. Google appears to have the best of both worlds—a highly secure system that end users won^ even notice. Maybe that never-ending conflict between security and convenience will be able to take a break once the trust system comes out.
1、Why are passwords severely criticized?
A.They can’t protect users against all threats.
B.Resetting them needs much time and effort.
C.They aren’t suitable for the forgetful people.
D.Ifs difficult to get both convenience and safety.
2、How can the Trust API become secure enough?
A.By combining various metrics together.
B.By locking users’ private information.
C.By providing users with Trust Scores.
D.By chan ging users’ identity recognition ways.
3、What can we know about the trust system?
A.It hasn’t been proved to be effective.
B.It is widely used in many fields.
C.It may make passwords out of use.
D.It needs to be improved from now on.
4、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.Aren’t Passwords Very Complex?
B.Is the Trust API Just Pie in the Sky?
C.What Can the Trust API Bring Users?
D.Will Passwords Soon Be a Thing of the Past?

23.(8分)When she first started learning about the climate change from one of her elders, Fawn Sharp was invited on a helicopter flight over the Olympic Mountains to survey the Mount Anderson glacier(冰川). But the glacier was gone, melted by the warming climate. Sharp had a deep sense of loss when she discovered the glacier wasn't there anymore.
Loss is a growing issue for people working and living on the front lines of climate change. And that gave Jennifer Wren Atkinson, a full-time lecturer at the University of Washington Bothell, US, an idea for a class.
This term, she taught students on the Bothell campus about the emotional burdens of environmental study. She used the experiences of Nalive American tribes (部落) , scientists and activists, and asked her 24 students to face the reality that there is no easy fix -- that "this is such an intractable problem that they're going to be dealing with it for the rest of their lives.”
Student Cody Dillon used to be a climate science skeptic (怀疑论者) . Then he did his own reading and research, and changed his mind.
Dillon wasn't going into environmental work--he was a computer-science major. Yet,the potential for a worldwide environmental catastrophe seemed so real to him five years ago that he quit his job and became a full-time volunteer for an environmental group that worked on restoration (恢复) projects.
Six months into the work, he decided that Alkinson's class was just what he was looking for - - a place where he could discuss his concerns about a changing climate.
Atkinson said she hopes the class helped her students prepare themselves for the amount of environmental loss that will happen over their lifetimes.
“We are already changing the planet - . so many species are going to be lost, displaced or massively impacted (巨大影响的) ,”she said. “The future isn't going to be what they imagined.”
1、Why did the author mention the case of Fawn Sharp?
A.To lay a basis for Fawn Sharp's further research.
B.To prove Fawn Sharp's work is similar to Atkinson's.
C.To lead into the issue of loss caused by climate change.
D.To show scientists' concern about the Mount Anderson glacier.
2、What's the main purpose of Atkinson's class?
A.To explore how different people deal with climate change.
B.To get students more concerned about environmental issue.
C.To find solutions to the Olympic Mountains environmental issue.
D.To teach students how to conduct a research about environment.
3、Which of the following best explains “intractable” underlined in Paragraph Three?
A.Simple. B.Difficult.
C.Common. D.Interesting.
4、How did Atkinson's class influence Dillon?
A.Dillon worked as a part-time volunteer for restoration projects.
B.It made him realize a planet-wide climate disaster would happen.
C.It encouraged him to be more involved in environmental protection.
D.It discouraged him to work on restoration projects for the environment.

25.(10分)If you feel yourself turning into an old grouch(脾气坏的人), don’t worry — happiness is just around the bend. A survey has found that although happiness dips in those in their 30s and 40s, people start to feel more content with life after the age of 50.
However an economist found that older people will never again regain the excitement of youth. Rather it is thought that with age, individuals become more pragmatic about the ups and downs that life brings and accept their fortune.
He questioned those in Britain, Switzerland and Germany and applied the findings to people’s life cycle.
Mr. Van Landeghem, 29, said:“A happiness curve does not necessarily imply that a 65-year-old prefers his own life to the life of a 25-year-old.”
“Both the 25-year-old and 65-year-old might agree that it is nicer to be 25 than to be 65. But te 65-year-old might
nevertheless be more satisfied, as he has learned to be satisfied with what he has.”
It was suggested the mid-life happiness dip is because this is when people have the most responsibilities — taking care of a family, paying a mortgage (抵押贷款) and having a demanding career. The middle-aged dip in happiness was also compared to that of losing a close relative or suddenly becoming unemployed.
The study is just one of many put forward as an indicator of what makes for a happy life.
Psychologists concluded that having money makes you happier, but only if you have a lot more than your friends and neighbors. At the same time, yo u’d better have enough tie to enjoy yourself instead of spending all your time on making money.
Separate research found that owning the house of your dreams, the car you always longed for and having millions in the bank doesn’t stop that desire to keep up with the Joneses (攀比). And if the Joneses have more than you do, you’ll be miserable. It seems envy at being lower in the social pecking order (权势等级) reduces the satisfaction of being well off.
If you just do what you love and you are good at, which society also values much, you may have a higher probability to be happy. But if your job pays less, how can you stick to it in disregard of responsibilities? Happiness means different things from different points of view, and point of view grows from one’s exper ience and knowledge. Perhaps it comes with you when you don’t need to think about adult problems or when you are wise enough to understand what satisfaction is.
