Lear ning to read is one of the most important periods in anyone’s development as it opens up so many opportunities. So many things in everyday life depend on your being able to read clearly. Here are a few examples.
If you want to find out the latest news about your favorite film star or the result of the latest match, you will pick up a newspaper and read what it has to say about these topics.
If you are on a long train or plane journey, you will probably have a book, a magazine or an e-book to help you pass t he time. Even if you are someone who ―doesn’t read books, it is possible that you will have to read the rules of the computer game that you are playing.
Very often, you read something without realizing that you are reading. For example, you might check the time table at an airport or make sure that you drive carefully as you see the road sign ―HILL. If you are unable to read, these necessary actions become either very difficult or impossible to achieve.
So, you understand how important a part reading plays in your life. Everybody who is using this textbook, To Be A Better Reader, has got the art of reading more or less. Why, then, you may ask yourself, is it necessary to have to read a book that tells you how to become a better reader — if you can read already, what is there to improve? Well, please think very carefully about what you mean by ―reading. Does it just mean that you know the meaning of words on a page and then speak them aloud or to yourself? Or is it something more than that?
In fact, reading without understanding is worthless. The main purpose of reading is to help you understand the world better and achieve a more colorful life. So no matter where you are, try to read with understanding and be a better reader.
4. From Paragraph 2 to Paragraph 4, how does the writer prove (证明)his opinion?
A. By telling reasons.
B. By giving examples.
C. By showing pictures.
D. By comparing differences.
5. According to the passage, people are reading when they ____________.
①see a movie poster in the theater ②find a NO SMOKING sign in the library
③enjoy a big meal in the restaurant ④notice a Great Sale ad in the supermarket
A. ①②③
B. ①③④
C. ①②④
D. ②③④
6. It can be inferred (推断)that the textbook, To Be A Better Reader, can help us to ____________.
A. learn new words
B. read out sentences
C. improve reading skills
D. know about game rules
7. What’s the main purpose of the last two paragraphs?
A. To help us make a reading plan.
B. To help us be able to read clearly.
C. To advise us to read more textbooks.
D. To advise us to read with understanding.
C
Sometimes, you just can’t help it. Maybe you’re watching a sad movie, or thinking about the friend who moved away. Why do people cry? What are tears(眼泪)? Scientists are working hard to find out the answers to these questions.
Ad Vingerhoets is a professor of psychology(心理学)at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. He is one of the few scientists in the world who have studied crying. According to Vingerhoets, there are three types of tears. Basal tears are the first type. They act as a protective object between the eye and the rest of the world. Next are reflex tears. They wash your eyes clean when something gets in them. Finally, there are emotional tears. “They are connected with our feelings,” explains Vingerhoets. “Especially when we feel helpless.”
Scientists believe that crying has something to do with how humans developed and learned to depend on each other. “Humans are very complex(复杂的),” says Lauren Bylsma, a professor from the USA. “It seems that tears serve to get help and support from others.” She says another reason we cry is that humans have the longest developmental period of almost any animal. It takes a long time for humans to grow up.
Vingerhoets approves. “I think that the reason why humans cry has to do with our long childhood,” he says. “That’s the time when we are still dependent on adults for love and protection and care. Tears were a safer way to be noticed by others. In this case, it is better to use a quiet way to ask for help,” he says.
Vingerhoets and Bylsma do lots of studies to better understand why humans cry. According to Bylsma, there is
still much more to discover. “It’s surprising,” she says, “how much we still don’t know.”
8. What kind of tears will run down your face when something gets into your eyes?
A. Basal tears.
B. Reflex tears.
C. Emotional tears.
D. Complex tears.
9. The underlined word “approves” in Paragraph 4 most probably means“_____________”.
A. agrees
B. cheers
C. repeats
D. succeeds
10. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A. It’s easy to un derstand why humans cry.
B. Basal tears are a type of protective object.
C. Emotional tears are better than reflex tears.
D. The reason why humans cry has nothing to do with childhood.
11. We may read this passage ____________.
A. in a mystery novel
B. in a storybook
C. in a science magazine
D. in a sports newspaper
D
When Matty Sallin, 34, was working on a degree in art and technology at New York University, he got interesting homework in electronic class. He decided to invent an alarm clock.
Everybody has to stand it every day, and it is really unpleasant! he says. He asked different people what they would like to be woken up instead of a noisy alarm. A lot of them said, "The smell of bacon (培根肉)".
So Sallin and two classmates invented a new kind of alarm clock: a wooden box with a pig face and a digital clock that uses the smell of cooking bacon instead of the sound to wake someone up. He explains, "There’s no danger of burning, because I built it carefully. It uses halogen light bulbs (钨卤灯)instead of a fire for cooking and turns off automatically (自动地)after ten minutes." Yes, the clock itself can do it. Just a few easy steps are needed to set the alarm.
"What you do is to put some frozen bacon in the night before and set the alarm," says Sallin.
"If you set the alarm for 8:00, it will turn on at 7:50 and slowly cook for ten minutes under the halogen bulbs," he says. Then the bulbs turn off and a fan blows the smell out through the nose of the pig.
"So instead of an alarm, you get a bacon smell awake," says Sallin. "Then you can open the door on the side and pull the bacon out and eat it."
When Sallin was a kid, he spent a lot of time making drawings of inventions. "I wanted to make a lift in my backyard and a special tree house, "he says. "But I never really thought I could be called an inventor!"
Sallin got an A in the class and went on to other things — but people continue to hear about his invention and email him every day asking where they can buy his alarm clock.
12. The underlined word ―it in the second paragraph refers to (指代)____________.
A. homework
B. technology
C. a new clock
D. a noisy alarm
13. Which of the following happens first?
A. Cooking the bacon for ten minutes.
B. Putting some frozen bacon.
C. Setting the alarm clock.
D. Blowing the smell out.
14. According to the passage, we know that ____________.
A. it’s dangerous to cook bacon for breakfast
B. Sallin refused to spend much time on inventions
C. people are interested in Sallin’s bacon alarm clock
D. students at New York University are tired of homework
15. What’s the most probable title for this passage?
A. A Special “Smell” Clock
B. Interesting Homework
C. A Great Inventor
D. The Smell of Bacon

[参考范文]
Dear Editor,
To improve its P.E. course, the university recently started to use an app called “Running Distance”. Students’ running records on the app will become part of their P.E. score.
To get a full mark, every term, boy students have to run 168 kilometers and girl students have to run 120 kilometers.
Some people agree. They think this method can help improve students’ health, and it can help to build up students’ strong will.
However, others disagree. They don’ t think the students have enough energy. Most students can’ t complete this task.
In my opinion, the university should offer different choices.
First, some students are not good at running. Second, some students may get injured when they are running.
What’ s more, students should develop the abilities of different kinds of sports and they should try to keep healthy in active ways.
