As I soared up towards the high ceiling and then swooped back down, I felt all the forces of gravity, motion, and momentum that we had learned about. Far in the interior of the country lay an old baronial hall, and in it lived an old proprietor, who had two sons, which two young men thought themselves too clever by half. They wantedtogoout andwootheKing ’s daughter; for the maidenin question had publicly announced that she would choose for her husband thatyouth who could arrange his words best.So these two geniuses prepared themselves a full week for the wooing —this was the longest time that could be granted them; but it was enough, for they had had much preparatory information, and everybody knows how useful that is. One of them knew the whole L atin dictionary by heart, and three whole years of thedaily paper of the little town into the bargain, and so well, indeed, that he couldrepeat it all either backwards or forwards, just as he chose. The other was deeplyread in the corporation laws, and knew by heart what every corporation ought to know;and accordingly he thought he could talk of affairs of state,and put his spoke in the wheel in the council. And he knew one thing more: he could embroider suspenders with roses and other flowers, and with arabesques, for hewas a tasty, light-fingeredfellow.“I shall win the Princess! ” So cried both of them. Therefore their old papagave to each of them a handsome horse. The youth who knew the dictionary and newspaper by heart hada black horse, andhe who knew all about the corporationlaws received a milk-white steed. Then they rubbed the corners of their mouthswith fish-oil, so that they might become very smooth and glib. All the servantsstoodbelow in the courtyard, andlookedon while they mountedtheir horses; andjust by chance the third son came up. He mounted the Billy-goat, pressed his heels into its sides, and galloped down the high street like a hurricane.“Hei, houp! that was a ride! Here I come! ” shouted Jack the Dullard, and he sang till his voice echoed far and wide.But his brothers rode slowly on in advance of him. They spoke not a word, for they were thinking about the fine extempore speeches they would have to bringout, and these had to be cleverly prepared beforehand.“Hallo!” shouted Jack the Dullard. “Here am I! See, itis so wet, it runs through one ’s fingers. ” And he filled his pocket with the clay.But his brothers gallopedon till the sparks flew, andconsequently they arriveda full hour earlier at the town gate than could Jack. Now at the gate each suitor was provided with a number, and all were placed in rows immediately on their arrival, six in each row, and so closely packed together that they could not movetheir arms;and that was a prudent arrangement,for they would certainly have come to blows, had they been able, merely because one of them stood before the other.All the inhabitants of the country round about stood in great crowds aroundthe castle, almost under the very windows, to see the Princess receive the suitors; and as each stepped into the hall, his power of speech seemed to desert him, like the light of a candle that is blown out. Then the Princess would say, “He is of no use! Away with him out of the hall! ”At last the turn came for that brother whoknew the dictionary by heart; but hedid not know it now; he had absolutely forgotten it altogether; and the boards seemed to re-echo with his footsteps,and the ceiling of the hall was made of looking-glass,so that he saw himself standing on his head;and at the window stoodthree clerks anda headclerk, andevery one of themwas writingdown everysingle word that was uttered, so that it might be printed in the newspapers, andsold for a penny at the street corners. It was a terrible ordeal, and they had, moreover, made such a fire in the stove, that the room seemed quite red hot.“It is dreadfully hot here! ” observed the first brother.“Yes, ”repliedthe Princess, “my father is goingtoroast youngpullets today. ”“Baa!” there he stood like a baa-lamb. He rode into the hall on his goat.“Well, it ’s most abominably hot here. ”“Y es, be cause I ’m roasting young pullets, ” replied the Princess.“Ah, that ’s lucky! ” exclaimedJack the Dullard, “for I supposeyou ’ll let me roast my crow at the same time? ”“With the greatest pleasure, ” saidthe Princess. “But have you anythingyou can roast it in? for I have neither pot nor pan. ”“Certainly I have!” said Jack. “Here ’s a cookingutensil with a tin handle. ”And he brought out the old wooden shoe, and put the crow into it.“Well, that is a famous dish! ” said the Princess. “But what shall we do forsauce?”“Oh, I have that in my pocket, ” said Jack; “I have so much of it that I ca n afford to throw some away; ” and he poured some of the clay out of his pocket.“I like that!” said the Princess. “You can give an answer, and you have something to say for yourself, and so you shall be my husband. But are you aware that every word we speak is being taken down, and will be published in the paper to-morrow? Look yonder, andyou will see in every window three clerks anda headclerk; andthe oldheadclerk is the worst of all, for he can ’t understandanything. ”But she only said this to frighten Jack the Dullard; and the clerks gave a great crow of delight, and each one spurted a blot out of his pen on to the floor.“Oh, thosearethegentlemen, arethey? ” said Jack; “then I will givethebestI have to the head clerk. ” And he turned out his pockets, and flung the wet clay full in the head clerk ’s face.“That was very cleverly done,” observed the Princess. “I could not have done that; but I shall learn in time. ”Andaccordingly Jack the Dullardwas made a king, andreceiveda crown andawife, and sat upon a throne. And this report we have wet from the press of thehead clerk and the corporation of printers—but they are not to be depended upon in the least.。

Billy Goat 1：Ba-a-a！It’s a sunny day. I am the smallest billy goat. I am just a kid.
Billy Goat 2：Ba-a-a！ I am not small. I am medium（中等的）.
Billy Goat 3：Ba-a-a！ Well，I am big. I am strong. Can you see my big horns（角）？
Billy Goat 1：Oh，I am so hungry.
Billy Goat 2：Me too.
Billy Goat 3：Look，grass！
Billy Goat 3：Let’s have a big meal today！
Billy Goat 1&2&3：Ah，here comes a troll（巨怪）！
Troll：I’m a troll. I’m mean（卑劣的）. I’m strong. I feel so hungry. I can eat a big horse. Billy Goat 1：I want to eat the grass. The best grass is over there.
Billy Goat 2：But the troll is over there，too.
Billy Goat 1：I am not afraid. I want to have a try. Just wait and see！
Billy Goat 2&3：Be careful！
Troll：Who？
Billy Goat 1：It is me，the smallest billy goat.
Troll：What a nice meal！ I am going to eat you.
Billy Goat 1：Oh，my friend. I am too small. The next one is bigger than me.
Troll：Bigger？ Fine，you can go now. I am waiting for the next one.
Billy Goat 2：Wow，it’s time for me to cross the bridge.
Billy Goat 3：Be careful！
Troll：Who is there？
Billy Goat 2：It is me，a medium billy goat.
Troll：Oh，great！ You are heavy and juicy（多汁的） enough. I can hardly wait to eat you up.
Billy Goat 2：Oh，no. I am too slim. I have no fat. The next one must be juicier than me. I know he will come across the bridge soon.
Troll：I am very，very hungry. I can eat a very large goat. OK，the best thing comes last. Thanks for your information. Now you can go.
Billy Goat 2：Really？
Troll：Yes，you need to eat more grass and get fatter. I will eat you up later.
Billy Goat 2：（whisper） What a silly（愚蠢的） troll！
Billy Goat 1：Ba-a-a！
Billy Goat 2：Ba-a-a！
Troll：My biggest billy goat，come on！
Billy Goat 3：They both made it. I am the smartest and the strongest one among us. I can walk across that bridge too！

Troll：Don’t fool me！ You are the biggest one. My biggest billy goat，you look so yummy.
Billy Goat 3：Well，I am the biggest. But I am also the smartest one.
Troll：Really？ I will catch you first.
Billy Goat 3：You are too stupid！ You cannot catch me.
Troll：Why not？ I am a troll. I am fast. I am strong. I am coming！
Billy Goat 3：Oh，you cannot win！ My friends，come on！
Troll：What’s going on？
Billy Goat 1&2&3：Troll，you missed the best chance to eat us. Union is strength（團结就是力量）！ Now，we are full，but you are still hungry. We are strong enough to defeat you. Ba-a-a！
Troll：Oh my god！Please let me go. I won’t be in the way（挡道） again，and I will get along well with you，I promise！
Billy Goat 1&2&3：You are so mean. We must give you a lesson anyway！
Troll：Help！ Help！
