第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
21.(6分)If you live in Washington, D.C., or Redwood, Calif., you may have glimpsed a small, boxy robot rolling along a local sidewalk, minding it’s own business, but attracting the attention of many a curious onlooker. The autonomous machines were part of a pilot program last year by Starship Technologies focused on delivering meals from
local restaurants in dozens of cities around the world.
“Today, more than ever, people lead a busy and diverse life,” Lex Bayer, Starship’s CEO, said in a statement online. “The hassle of needing to rearrange your life for a delivery will become a thing of the past. You don’t have to switch your working from home day, reschedule meetings, visit a locker, drive to a post office or contact a deliveryman all because of a missed delivery.”
The package delivery service is not available to everyone jus t yet. The company said it’s rolling out the service in Milton Keynes, England. The wheeled robots have a top speed of 4 mph and can detect obstacles from as far as 30 feet away. “The robot can operate through just about anything,” Nick Handrick, head of operations for Starship’s D.C.office, told The Washington Post's Maura Judkis last year. “If you had something in the way—a stick—it’s able to climb the edges of a road.”
By giving customers control of when deliveries occur, Starship Technologies is offering its service as a way to battle package theft. In its announcement, the company cited statistics from a Wakefield Research Poll for Comcast last year that found that 3 in 10 Americans who live in houses or townhouses have had packages stolen.
To sign up for the service, which costs a little more than $10 per month, customers need to download the company's app. Customers then create a “Starship Delivery Address,” a unique address inside a Starship facility, instead of a residence, where they can have packages sent from places such as Amazon, com. Once a package is delivered to the Starship address, customers receive a text that allows them to schedule a home delivery via robot.
1、Which can best replace the underlined word “hassle” in paragraph 2?
A.failure B.expectation C.safety D.trouble
2、What problem is the delivery robot facing?
A.There is a limit to its service area.
B.It takes longer to deliver packages.
C.It covers a short distance each time.
D.It can’t sense the barriers 20 feet away.
3、How does the package by a robot avoid being stolen?
A.The company shortens the delivery hour.
B.The package is delivered to the house directly.
C.Its delivery time is in the control of customers.
D.The customers are informed of its delivery time in advance.
4、What can be inferred about Starship Delivery Address in the last paragraph?
A.It is a real home address of the customers.
B.It can arrange delivery robots for the customers.
C.It is a cheaper solution to the delivery of packages.
D.It sends the packages mainly to some shopping platforms.
22.(8分)Next time you go shopping, keep in mind that there may be hidden cameras analyzing your habits. According to a 2015 survey of 150 managers from Computer Services Corporation, a quarter of British shops use facial recognition software to collect data on shopper behavior.
With concerns that face-recognition cameras“ are kind of invasive(冒犯的)”, British analysis firm Hoxton Analytics has come up with a new way of measuring footfall (客流)—by filming people's shoes. The technology can collect a large amount of personal information. "We have cameras at 50 cm off the ground and they point down so they are less invasive than facial recognition," Duncan Mann, Hoxton's officer said.
As modern cities get fuller—70 percent of the population will live in urban areas by 2050—cameras and other technologies are taking over public spaces and collecting our data. Their purpose is to keep people safe, provide efficient services and prevent disasters and crimes.
But some are not happy with the cameras as far as their privacy(隐私) is concerned. "Very few of us have any real concept of what data smart cities are gathering," said Renate
Samson.
We begin giving away data as soon as we wake up. When we enter the transport system, we are giving away even more details about ourselves through smart cards, mobile phones or credit cards.
Nick Millman, director at a consulting firm thinks statistics are the key to the privacy concern. He used the example of Google Maps, which is to monitor the flow of traffic in Stockholm. He explained, "It is basically adding privacy controls to statistics so that you only see the data you need to know about". In this case, Google gets enough data to improve traffic but not so much that it shows individual journey patterns.
1、What is the article mainly about?
A.An introduction to collecting shoppers' data.
B.The concerns about giving away personal data.
C.The problems caused by imbalanced distribution of population.
D.An invention recording and collecting customers' information.
2、The new technology invented by Hoxton Analytics_______.
A.can gather a lot of people's personal data from their shoes
B.uses cameras fitted on the ground to collect customers' data
C.has improved the accuracy of facial recognition software
D.offers a perfect solution to customers' privacy concerns
3、According to the author, cameras in modern cities_______.
A.cause a huge waste of public space
B.help reduce the size of population in urban areas
C.are likely to help improve traffic conditions
D.are to avoid crimes and disasters and provide efficient services
4、What is Renate Samson's attitude toward the rise of smart cities?
A.Worried.
B.Optimistic.
C.Confused.
D.Uninterested.
23.(8分)Playing a musical instrument throughout: your life protects your hearing in old age, a Canadian study suggests. The study, published in Psychology and Aging, carried out hearing tests on 74 adult musicians and 89
non-musicians. It found a 70-year-old musician’s hearing was as good as that of a 50-year-old who did not play.
Hearing normally declines as people age. By 60, 10-30% of people have moderate hearing loss. By 80, that goes up to as many as 60%. Problems are particularly seen in the central auditory (听觉的) processing system, which is associated with understanding speech, especially when there is background noise.
Previous studies have shown musicians have better hearing than non-players. But this research, by a team at the Rotman Research Institute in Toronto, looked at adults of all ages - from 3 to 91 - to see how people were affected as they aged. They carried out hearing tests on 74 amateur and professional musicians (who had played since the age of 1, were still practising and had been given formal music lessons) and 89 non-musicians (who had never played an instrument). Musicians were significantly better at picking out speech against noise.
The researchers suggest that lifelong musicianship reduces age-related changes in the brain, probably due to musicians using their auditory systems at a high level on a regular basis.
Th e head of biomedical research at Action on Hearing Loss, Dr Ralph Holme, said: “While this study suggests that musicians might be more able to cope with the consequences of hearing loss, it is far better to reduce damage in the first place by using appropriate ear protection. We have always campaingned for everyone who plays a musical instrument or listens to loud music to wear hearing protection, like earplugs, which reduce the risk of damaging your hearing permanently.”
1、What can we learn from Paragraph 2?
A.A person aged 80 will lose 30% hearing.
B.A person aged above 60 must have bad hearing.
C.People have fewer problems with background noise.
D.People’s hearing usually becomes worse when they get older.
2、What can we get from the Canadian study?
A.It tested the hearing of 12 people.
B.The finding of the study wasn’t published publicly.
C.Playing a musical instrument may do good to hearing.
D.Musicians were as good at picking out speech against noise as non-musicians.
3、Why don’t musicians change much in their brain as they age?
A.They like to take more exercise.
B.They use their hearing more and regularly.
C.They don’t expose themselves to background noise.
D.They pay more attention to protecting their hearing.
4、How can we deal with hearing loss according to Dr Ralph Holme?
A.Get help from musicians.
B.Listen to loud music less.
C.Protect hearing properly.
D.Play a musical instrument more.
5、The author wrote the passage to ________.
A.entertain the readers
B.advertise a musical instrument
C.complain abou t people’s hearing loss
D.inform readers of a research on hearing
24.(8分)One of my neighbors used to have a beautiful tree in her front yard. Her dad had planted it for her when it was nothing more than a twig(树枝) and several years later it started to shoot towards the sky with amazing speed. Soon it blessed her with cooling shade in the summer and glorious, golden leaves in the fall.
When the two-day snowstorm struck our town, heavy snow fell on the tree’s branches that were still full of leaves. The weight split that lovely tree down the middle. It was so sad seeing half of it laying on the ground after the storm. When I talked to my neighbor later, she said that the damage had been too much and that the entire tree would have to be cut down. Thankfully she had saved a few saplings(树苗) from it that she hoped to replant in the future.
Still, it was a shock to drive by her house the other day and see nothing but a stump in her front yard. I missed that
tree. I missed its beauty, its leaves shinning in the afternoon sun. I missed seeing its limbs reach towards the heavens. I thought that the stump would be a sad reminder of its loss for a long time to come. My wonderful neighbor, though, had another plan. When I drove by her home today I saw a tiny bird feeder sitting on that stump and a colorful songbird having its dinner. It was such an affirmation of life. It was such a joy to see. I could feel my heart smile.
Life by its very nature is a mixed bag. It hands us beauty and tragedy, love and loss, pleasure and pain. What we do with it, however, is up to us. We can let it split us in two, or we can use even its hardest times to make our souls stronger and our hearts more loving. We can spend it complaining or we can use it to help others.
1、We know from the first paragraph that ________.
A.the tree grew very slowly
B.the tree was so strong that it could bear any weight
C.the tree showed its beauty and benefits
D.the author’s neighbor was good at planting trees
2、The author’s neighbor left a stump in her front yard to use it as ________.
A.a good reminder B.a place to feed birds
C.a seat after dinner D.a beautiful sculpture
3、What does the author mainly want to show in the passage?
A.Life is determined by our attitude towards it.
B.Life consists of pain and suffering.
C.Life has beauty and tragedy.
D.Life should be pleasant rather than painful.
25.(10分)Fikiri Kiponda’s path from accountant to marine (海洋的) conservationist was sparked by a chance encounter. After securing his dream job, Kiponda decided he wanted more. He wasn’t quite sure what he was looking for until he ran across some turtle hatchlings.
He didn’t know it was turtle. Fortunately enough he got the right person to ask and he got motivated. That person was Nkindi, a staff member at the Watamu Conservation project who later invited him to volunteer on the project. He later left his accounting job and fully devoted himself into the world of sea turtles. Now,he runs and spends his time nursing critically endangered sea turtles back to health.
Sea turtles have been around for nearly 110 million years and are now considered highly endangered. Their preservation rests on activities of conservationists such as Kiponda as these turtles face numerous threats and signs of their extinction in the next 50 years.
Local fishermen traditionally catch them to supplement their own low catch rates and sell them for their oil. As
changes are made to accommodate more hotels for tourists, there is less available beach land for turtle nesting.
Kiponda’s passion has now spr ead to his community, changing their attitude towards sea life preservation with his “by-catch release programme.”
Through this program, fishermen are now paid for returning turtles accidentally caught in their fishing nets. The healthy ones are tagged and released into the marine park while he takes care of sick and injured turtles back to health.
Before the launch of pioneering spirit like this, turtles caught by fishermen were used for their meat and their oil extracted (提炼) for its medicinal properties.
“Releasing the turtle back into the ocean is a very good feeling, like, you feel like you’ve done something concrete and I guess everybody would love to do that...so I guess it’s unique work.”
1、What was Fikiri Kiponda’s dream job according to the text?
A.An accountant.
B.A marine conservationist.
C.A guide to the Watamu Conservation Project.
D.An advocate for turtles.
2、What may be the main threat to the turtles?
A.The rising sea level. B.Being caught by tourists.
C.Overdevelopment in the tourism. D.The reduction in their nesting place.
3、Which of the following words can best describe Fikiri Kiponda?
A.Energetic but conservative. B.Enthusiastic and caring.
C.Arbitrary but considerate. D.Ambitious and knowledgeable.
4、Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.The man saving endangered sea turtles.
B.An unique job of protecting sea turtles.
C.A pioneer project protecting sea animals.
D.The current situation faced by sea turtles.

29、I am a high school student from China and I am quite for your opinion about best gifts: the value of gifts lies in its intension so we should devote more to them.
The best gift I’ve ever received is a book from my English teacher, D ebbie, which she brought to me when she returned from her holiday in USA. The book’s name is Chicken Soup for the Teenage Soul: The Real Deal: Friends. I value this book because it shows me how to keep the balance of friendship in a positive way. And I must thank my favorite teacher for her care about me because she found me at loss dealing with friends at one time. Reading it, I have been inspired and balanced myself in life and study.
I strongly recommend you to read it and share what you gain with me in your reply.
Yours ever,
Li Hua。
