My Favorite Traditional Festival – Chinese New Year
Wow, Chinese New Year is my absolute favorite time of the year! It's the most fun, exciting and happiest festival we celebrate.
I look forward to it for months and months! There's just so much to love about this special tradition.
First of all, the preparations and decorations are amazing. A few weeks before New Year's Day, my parents start cleaning our whole house from top to bottom. We have to get rid of any dirt, dust or messiness to welcome the new year fresh and clean. My brother and I love to help out by wiping down surfaces and vacuuming. It's hard work but we know good fortune smiles on a neat, tidy home.
Once the cleaning is done, the real fun begins - decorating! We put up bright red lanterns, banners with lucky sayings, and papercut-outs of characters symbolizing good luck and prosperity. My favorite is the upside-down fu symbol meaning blessing and good fortune. We hang it on our front door to
invite blessings into our home for the coming year. The house looks so vibrant and festive!
Another exciting part is the special foods we enjoy during this time. A few days before New Year's Eve, my mom starts preparing all the yummy dishes like dumplings, noodles, fish, and niangao, which is a sweet sticky rice cake. We kids aren't allowed in the kitchen but the smells wafting out are mouthwatering! On New Year's Eve, we have a huge feast with the whole family called "surrounding the stove." All the aunts, uncles and cousins come over and we sit around eating, laughing and catching up.
After dinner, the real party starts - watching the New Year's Gala on TV and setting off firecrackers at midnight to ring in the new year! I love the fireworks painting the night sky in glittering showers of red and gold. Their crackling sounds scare away any lingering evil spirits, allowing only good luck to remain. Once it's the new year, my brother and I can't wait to get our red envelopes stuffed with cash from our parents and relatives. Hooray, free money!
Over the next few days, we visit friends and family, sample more delicious foods, and have a total blast. My cousins and I play games, watch movies, trade snacks from our red envelopes,
and just enjoy tons of fun playtime together. No school for almost two weeks - heaven!
At the end of the holidays, we finish up by attending the Lantern Festival where we release floating lanterns into the night sky to cast away any remaining bad luck. Walking through the warm, lantern-lit streets crowded with festivalgoers, munching on tangyuan (sweet rice balls) and watching the beautiful glowing lanterns drift up into the darkness is pure magic.
I adore Chinese New Year and all the wonderful traditions that come with it - the cleaning, decorations, yummy foods, lucky red envelopes, fireworks, games with family, and lanterns. It truly is the most marvelous festival of the year. Just thinking about it fills me with excitement and joy! I can't wait for the next one to come around again soon.

My Favorite Holiday: Chinese New Year
Chinese New Year is my absolute favorite holiday! It's the biggest and most exciting celebration of the whole year. I love all the decorations, special foods, fireworks, and traditions. For weeks before the big day, my family gets ready by cleaning the
house from top to bottom. We have to sweep away any bad luck and make room for incoming good fortune.
My mom is an amazing chef and she spends days cooking all my favorite dishes like dumplings, noodles, spring rolls, and sticky rice balls. She makes sure we have extras to share with neighbors and visitors. Dad takes me to the market to pick out the plumpest oranges, juiciest tangerines, and biggest bags of sweet red dates. The whole house smells incredible!
A few days before New Year's Eve, we decorate the house with red lanterns, couplets, and papercuts of characters that symbolize luck, wealth, and happiness. We hang the decorations on the doors and windows to welcome the new year and scare off any evil spirits. My grandparents give me shiny new red envelopes with my name written in black ink. I can't wait to find out what's inside!
Finally, the big night arrives! We gather for a huge feast with all our relatives. The table is piled high with dishes and everyone keeps trying to add more food. We make a toast with tea and my uncle lights a whole tray of firecrackers to drive away the old year. The popping sounds echo down the street as all the neighbors join in. I jump up and down, so excited for the new year!
After dinner, it's time for the main event: passing out the red envelopes! The adults give the kids envelopes stuffed with crisp new cash. We kids run around shouting out thanks and showing off our envelopes. My cousins and I can never resist peeking inside right away. Sometimes I'll get a few dollars, sometimes twenty or even more! My grandparents always give me the biggest envelopes since I'm the youngest. No matter how much is inside, just receiving a red envelope from my elders is a huge honor.
As night falls, we go outside and light a stream of bright red firecrackers that crackle and pop down the streets. The air fills with thick smoke and the scent of fireworks. All the neighborhood kids run around wildly, screaming with delight as we chase the noise and flames. The New Year's fireworks are the most spectacular of all! The shows last for hours, lighting up the sky with dazzling colors and shapes. My favorite bursts are the red ones shaped like peony flowers.
When we finally return home, everyone is exhausted but grinning from ear to ear. We kids proudly display our red envelopes and piles of coins. I set mine on the dresser, savoring the thought of all the new toys and treats I can buy when we go
out the next day. After all the excitement, we fall into bed for a long, cozy sleep under our fresh New Year's quilts.
The celebrations continue for two full weeks as we make the rounds visiting all our relatives and friends. Everywhere we go there are plates piled high with candies, seeds, and little treats for the kids. People cheerfully greet us with wishes of luck and prosperity for the coming year. We return the greetings and thank each person for their hospitality and generosity.
Whenever I think back on Chinese New Year, I'll forever remember the piercing fireworks, savory homemade feasts, festive decorations, joyous laughter with family, and of course those delightfully plump red envelopes! The holiday celebrates a fresh start to the new year, brimming with hopes for great fortune and happiness. For me, it will always be a time of traditions, togetherness, and making wonderful new memories. I can't wait for next year's celebration!

My Favorite Holiday - Chinese New Year
I love Chinese New Year! It's the most exciting and fun holiday of the whole year. We get to eat delicious foods, get money in red envelopes, watch fireworks and the dragon dance, and spend lots of time with my big family. Chinese New Year is the best!
It all starts weeks before the actual holiday. My mom and dad start cleaning our house from top to bottom to get rid of any bad luck from the old year. They even sweep the floors with a new broom to invite good luck inside. My favorite part is helping my mom decorate our home with red lanterns, banners with Chinese phrases, and paper cutouts of the zodiac animal for that year.
This year was the Year of the Rabbit, so we had cute little bunnies all over our home. My dad hung up the upside-down word 'fu' which means fortune on our front door. He says it
brings us prosperity. I like the bright red color and fun decorations everywhere!
A few days before New Year's Eve, my mom takes me grocery shopping to prepare all the special foods. We buy a lot of oranges, tangerines, candies, seeds, and ingredients to make dumplings and nian gao, which is a sticky sweet rice cake. At the market, there are interesting candies in the shapes of coins or the zodiac animals for sale.
On New Year's Eve, my whole family gets together at my grandma's house for a huge feast and celebration. My grandma is an amazing chef and she spends days cooking all of my favorite dishes - dumplings, whole steamed fish, spring rolls, noodles, and so much more! I love the dumplings most of all. My cousins, aunts, uncles, and I all take turns making them together. It's a fun tradition.
After our big meal, my sister and cousins put on a talent show for the adults. I sang a song and did a magic trick. Then we all sit around watching the New Year's countdown show on TV until midnight. Right when the clock strikes 12, we open all the windows and doors to let the new year in. My dad lights a long string of firecrackers that make a huge noise to scare off any evil spirits and bad luck. It's really loud but exciting!
In the morning, the first day of the new year, I wake up to find a red envelope stuffed with cash under my pillow from my parents. My sister and I fight over who gets to open their lucky money first. After, we put on our new fancy outfits and visit my grandparents' home. My grandparents give us more red envelopes and delicious snacks like candies, seeds, and oranges which symbolize fullness and wealth.
In the next two weeks, we visit all our aunts, uncles, and cousin's houses, watching performances of the traditional lion and dragon dances in the streets and parks. The dragon dance is so cool with the long colorful dragon costume undulating through crowds of people. I hope I get to be in the dragon dance troupe when I'm older!
At night, there are magnificent fireworks shows lighting up the sky. We sit outside eating tang yuan, which are little black sesame dumplings in hot ginger soup. It's a special treat just for New Year's. I make a wish on the first EvEning of firecrackers and fireworks. Someday I'd love to put on one of the fireworks shows myself!
Chinese New Year is such a fun time. I love all the family gatherings, special foods, lucky traditions, dances, fireworks, and decorations. It's the most wonderful, festive, and exciting time of
year! I can't wait until next year's celebrations for the Year of the Cat. I hope I get lots of lucky money in my red envelopes!
