六、阅读理解
文章大意:这是一篇说明文。

文章主要介绍了未来宇航员可以在有同理心的智能机器人的陪伴下完成太空探索任务。

13. To help astronauts of the future survive the mental challenges that come with living in space for extended periods of time, space travelers’
missions could soon be accompanied by AI-powered, empathetic (同理心的) robotic assistants.
Not only does space travel present astronauts with a lot of physical stresses, spending months or years in such a physically demanding place with limited space and the same people can also raise lots of mental tests as well. According to MIT Technology Review, scientists are wording to ease some of the mental challenges facing astronauts by creating “an AI assistant that’s able to feel human emotion and respond with empathy.”
While such a technology would prove itself useful by being able to predict the needs of crew members and “intervene (介入) if their mental health is in need of help, ”it has the potential to he life saving when humans choose to explore beyond the earth’s gravitational field and towards deep space.
Though astronauts currently on the International Space Station have an intelligent robot to interact with, it lacks proper emotional intelligence. As
a result, a team at the organization’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory is working on a more advanced and complicated emotional support companion that can
control a spacecraft’s functioning in addition to tracking crew member’s behaviors.
Right now in the lab, an AI-equipped robot called Henry the Helper can be found wandering around the grounds helping visitors who appear confused or lost based on their facial expressions. Two more emotionally intelligent robots are expected to be introduced later this year, one of which is said to be able to participate in conversations more complex than giving navigation (导航) assistance.
The team’s final goal is to make a companion named Fiona the Future a reality, an emotionally intelligent cross-platform system. Rather than being limited to a physical robotic device, it could be digitally integrated into space stations and habitats on Mars and beyond. Fiona, if all goes according to the JPL’s plans, will help keep astronauts of the future mentally fit as they start their journeys to deep space.
1. Why are the emotional support robots needed?
A.To help astronauts get rid of physical stresses.
B.To protect astronauts from emotional suffering.
C.To achieve the mission of exploring deep space.
D.To test the robots’ ability to feel human emotions.

16. As they reach school age, about 90 percent of children will have experienced a condition in which fluid (液体) fills the middle ear, muffling (使模糊) sound and sometimes causing infection. The fluid usually clears on its own, but if not, it can lead to a painful ear infection called acute otitis (中耳炎) media. In some cases the fluid can persist for more than a year, causing hearing loss during this period, and slowing down their development of language and social skills.
Diagnosis usually requires a visit to a specialist—but researchers have now developed an app that detects this fluid just as accurately, with only a smartphone and a paper funnel (漏斗).
Doctors typically detect the problem by peering into the ear for a visual assessment. Y et, this method has only a 50 percent accuracy rate. “Right now, if you bring your child to a pediatrician, or to any urgent care family doctor, the way they look at whether or not there’s fluid in the middle ear is by looking at the eardrum,” says Sharat Raju, a surgeon in the department of head and neck surgery at the University of Washington.
For a cheaper and more accessible alternative, researchers at the University of Washington turned to smartphones. First the user follows a template to cut and tape a piece of paper into a funnel, which can be placed between a smartphone and the patient’s ear. Next the app plays a chirping sound through the phone’s speaker; the sound waves bounce off the eardrum and hit the phone’s microphone, where they register and are analyzed by the app. An eardrum with fluid behind it will vibrate (振动) differently than if the middle ear is full of air, as it normally is.
To develop the app, the researchers first played chirps for patients with and without fluid in their ears. They recorded the echoes (回音), which indicate the eardrum’s mobility. Then they used a machine learning model to classify the returning sound waves, determining which audio characteristics indicated a normal ear and which suggested the presence of fluid. Once they tested the app on 98 children, ranging from 18 months to 17 years old, at Seattle Children’s Hospital. It correctly detected fluid in 85 percent of cases, and correctly identified fluid-free ears in 82 percent.
The researchers are currently trying to get FDA approval for the app, and have founded a company to commercialize it. They hope to make it available by the end of the year, to help parents track children’s ear health at home.
1. What do we know about the fluid from the first paragraph?
A.It is mostly part of children’s growth.B.It is unavoidable for any child.
C.It is a permanent physical condition.D.It is beyond any medical means.
2. What does the underlined word “pediatrician” refer to in Paragraph 3?
A.A hospital.B.A specialist.
C.A relative.D.An app.
3. What is the fourth paragraph mainly about?
A.The application of the app.B.The causes of the kid’s ear problem.
C.The purpose of developing the app.D.The experiment of the smartphone.
4. What do the researchers expect of the app?
A.It will upgrade the medical technology.B.It will hit the market in the near future.
C.It will help children do better academically.D.It will save doctors medical operations.

文章主要介绍了过去治疗肥胖的饮食建议并不奏效,我们需要重新思考减肥的方法。

17. Rethinking Obesity(肥胖症)
In principle, it sounds simple: eat less and move more. This dietary advice for dealing with obesity has been around for decades. 1 So why hasn’t this approach to weight control worked?
One possibility is that we haven’t tried hard enough. Perhaps we have lacked the discipline and willpower to maintain healthy dietary and exercise habits—a challenge made more difficult today for those surrounded by inexpensive, tasty highly processed foods.
2 In a recent paper, my colleagues and I question the basic assumption of whether taking in more calories than you burn really is the
primary cause of obesity. We argue that we are driven to overeat because we are getting fatter.
The key to how this works in obesity is insulin (胰岛素) processed, rapidly digestible carbohydrates (碳水化合物食品) raise our insulin level too high. 3 A few hours after eating a high-carb meal, the number of calories in the blood stream falls suddenly, so we get hungrier sooner after eating.
The two opposing views of cause and effect in obesity have very different implications for how to prevent and treat weight problems. The usual approach focuses on how much to eat, with prescriptions (处方) for daily calorie intake. 4 Higher-fat foods may help get rid of body fat, a possibility supported by clinical trials comparing high-fat diets with low-fat ones.
This way of thinking might help explain why calorie restriction usually fails long before a person with obesity approaches an ideal body weight. A low-calorie, low-fat diet further restricts an already limited supply of energy to the body, worsening hunger without addressing the underlying tendency to store too many calories in body fat. 5
Although much more research will be needed to test this idea, it is time to question the basic assumptions about cause and effect calories and weight gain that have controlled our thinking.
A.Yet, worldwide obesity rates just keep going up.
B.In our view the emphasis should be place a on what to eat.
C.It is important to control the amount of food consumed by us.
D.Obesity is a disease that affects 650 million adults worldwide.
E.Or perhaps the problem is the focus on “calorie balance” itself.
F.Weight loss becomes a battle between mind and metabolism(新陈代谢).
G.This causes fat cells to take in to many calories, leaving fewer for the rest of the body.
