But what made him most unusual was the fact that whenever he needed to __3__, he did so by singing opera. Even if someone said “good day” to him, he would clear his throat and __4__,“Goood dayyy to youuuuuu…toooooo!”Almost everyone considered William unusual, since no one could get a normal __5__ word out of him. As no one knew how he made his living—he lived quite __6__, always wearing the same old second-hand suit—they often had no respect for him and sometimes even __7__ him.William had been in Cheekyville for some years, when one day a rumor (谣言) spread that William had received a role in a very important __8__ in the nation's capital, that there had been posters everywhere advertising the event, and that it had been a great __9__. When I first learned to cook, I used recipes (菜谱) and turned out some tasty dishes. But soon I grew bored. Why follow someone else's way of cooking when I could create my own? Imitating role models is like using training wheels on a child's bicycle; they help you get going, but once you find your own balance, you fly faster and farther without relying on them.In daily life, imitation can hurt us if we subconsciously (下意识地) hold poor role models. If, as a child, you observed people whose lives were bad, you may have accepted their fear and pain as normal and gone on to follow what they did. If you do not make strong choices for yourself, you will get the results of the weak choices of others. In the field of entertainment, our culture glorifies celebrities. Those stars look great on screen. But when they step off screen, their personal lives may be disastrous. If you are going to follow someone, focus on their talent, not their bad character or unacceptable behaviors.Blessed is the person willing to act on their sudden desire to create something unique.Think of the movies, books, teachers, and friends that have affected you most deeply. They touched you because their creations were motivated by inspiration, not desperation. The world is changed not by those who do what has been done before them, but by those who do what has been done inside them.Creative people have an endless resource of ideas. The problem a creator faces is not running out of material;it is what to do with all the material knocking at the door of imagination.Study your role models, accept the gifts they have given, and leave behind what does not serve you. Then you can say,“I stand on the shoulders of my ancestors' tragedies and declare victory, and know tha t they are cheering me on.”16.Imitation proves useful when you________.A.know you are uniqueB.lose the balance of lifeC.begin to learn something newD.get tired of routine practice17. To avoid the bad result of imitation, we should________.A. forget daily fear and painB. choose the right exampleC. ask others for decisionsD. stay away from stars18.According to the author, the world moves on because of those who are________.A. desperate to influence others with their knowledgeB. ready to turn their original ideas into realityC. eager to discover what their ancestors didD. willing to accept others' ideas19.The trouble a creator faces is________.A.the lack of strong motivationB.the absence of practical ideasC.how to search for more materialsD.how to use imagination creatively20. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?A. To highlight the importance of creativity.B. To criticize the characters of role models.C. To compare imitation with creation.D. To explain the meaning of success.BI entered high school having read hundreds of books. But I was not a good reader. Merely bookish, I lacked a point of view when I read. Rather, I read in order to get a point of view.I searched books for good expressions and sayings, pieces of information, ideas, themes—anything to enrich my thought and make me feel educated. When one of my teachers suggested to his sleepy tenth-grade English class that a person could not have a “complicated idea” until he had read at least two thousand books, I heard the words without recognizing either their irony(嘲讽)or their very complicated truth. I merely determined to make a list of all the books I had ever read. Strict with myself, I included only once a title I might have read several times.(How, after all, could one read a book more than once?)And I included only those books over a hundred pages in length.(Could anything shorter be a book?)There was yet another high school list I made. One day I came across a newspaper article about an English professor a t a nearby state college. The article had a list of the “hundred most important books of Western Civilization”. “More than anything else in my life,” the professor told the reporter with_finality,_“these books have made me all that I am.” That was the kind of words I couldn't ignore. I kept the list for the several months it took me to read all of the titles. Most books, of course, I hardly understood. While reading Plato's The Republic, for example, I needed to keep looking at the introduction of the book to remind myself what the text was about. However, with the special patience and superstition(迷信)of a schoolboy, I looked at every word of the text. And by the time I reached the last word, pleased, I persuaded myself that I had read The Republic, and seriously crossed Plato off my list.21.On hearing the teacher's suggestion of reading, the writer thought ________.A.one must read as many books as possibleB.a student should not have a complicated ideaC.it was impossible for one to read two thousand booksD.students ought to make a list of the books they had read22.While at high school, the writer ________.A.had plans for readingB.learned to educate himselfC.only read books over 100 pagesD.read only one book several times23.The underlined phrase “with finality” probably means “________”.A.firmly B.clearlyC.proudly D.pleasantly24.The writer's purpose in mentioning The Republic is to ________.A.explain why it was included in the listB.describe why he seriously crossed it off the listC.show that he read the books blindly though they were hard to understandD.prove that he understood most of it because he had read every word25.The writer provides two book lists to ________.A.show how he developed his point of viewB.tell his reading experience at high schoolC.introduce the two persons' reading methodsD.explain that he read many books at high school答案课时作业(二十)Ⅰ.一个人总是用歌声来回答别人的问题,因此被视为疯子。

Unit 5 Theme parksⅠ.阅读理解A(2017·石家庄第一次考试)When I was about ten years old, I was walking down the street with my mother. She stopped to speak to Mr. Lee, and I knew I could see Mr. Lee any time around the neighborhood, so I didn't pay any attention to him. After we passed Mr. Lee, my mother stopped me and said something that has stuck with me from that day until now. She said, “You let that be the last time you've ever walked by somebody and not opened up your mouth to speak, because even a dog will wag its tail when it passes you on the street.” Mother's words sound simple, but it's been a guidepost for me and the foundation of who I am.It's not just something I believe in; it's become a way of life. I believe that every person deserves to feel someone acknowledge their presence, no matter how humble (卑微的) they may be.At work, I always said hello to the founder of the company and asked him how our business was doing. But I also spoke to the people who cleaned the buildings and asked how their children were doing. After a few years of greeting the founder, I had the courage to ask him for a meeting. We had a great talk. At a certain point I asked him how far he thought I could go in his company. He said, “If you want to, you can get all the way to this sea t.”I've become vice president, but that hasn't changed the way I approach people.I still follow my mother's advice. I speak to everyone I see, no matter where I am. I've learned that speaking to people creates a pathway into their world, and it allows them to come into mine, too.【解题导语】作者小时候因为在路上没有给邻居打招呼而受到了母亲的批评。

【世纪金榜】2015年高考英语大一轮复习 Unit 5 Theme parks课时作业新人教版必修4Ⅰ. 阅读理解One of the things we have sometimes at work are called“morale days”. We bring in things and ideas to make the office more fun. I was looking for something fun and different and that’s how I discov ered the“Smile”cards a website offers. I ordered some and used them to do some of the kindness ideas which I had read about and turned them into Thanksgiving ideas. I wanted to give thanks to my co-workers for all the help and support they have given me since I started working there.Since I began my employment, I have had a series of events that have changed my life, including the loss of one of my daughters last year and most recently the loss of my brother. Through these tragedies(悲剧), my co-workers have continued to show me a huge amount of care and understanding. Often, during these times of need they have filled in for me when I was not able to come to work, or have offered kind gifts when I was in short of money, and have showed a deep and loving understanding when I was feeling very low and discouraged. They have truly been my main strength in being able to overcome some very serious problems I have faced during the last couple of years. Most employers or co-workers might have turned the other cheek and chose not to be involved or have looked down on me in judgment during these times, however, not once have they given up on me.This group of people are truly part of a unique and rare breed that still tries hard to give values such as respect, honor, spirit, and honesty not only into the workplace, but also within each other. I have worked in several different types of firms and never met a more devoted and loving set of people to work with. I just wanted to share this story to offer my thankfulness for such acts of kindness and recognize this group of people for all their hard work and understanding. In this day and age, it is so nice to know that such values are still at work. It is much too easy for most people to be understood by their own difficulties to be able to truly make such a powerful impact on other persons’ life.【文章大意】文中作者感谢自己的同事在自己遇到困难时悉心相助, 带给她力量和温暖, 让她感叹同事之间的美好友谊。
