If you ask Japanese middle school students about fashion at school, most would say their school uniforms are always in fashion. They wear their uniforms even at parties or going shopping.
Many girl characters in popular Japanese cartoons wear sailor style clothes like school uniforms too.
Girls’ uniforms for Japanese middle schools were borrowed from 1920s British navy(海军) uniforms. Boys’ u niforms are from Russian army dress(军服). They are usually black, grey or dark blue, and make students look clean and smart.

What girls wear:
A skirt and top that look like a sailor dress.

Jack is an English teacher at a college. He moved to New York City with his family. Jack is an excellent teacher, so we all missed him very much since he left. It was not long before Jack came back to North Carolina for a short visit. The teachers and students held a small party for him.
At the party, I certainly would not give up that good chance to learn English. So I tried to think of all kinds of topics to talk with Grace, another English teacher.
Just before I was about to run out of my topics, suddenly I heard Jack say to others loudly, “I dig New York!” I immediately asked Grace, “Is it really difficult to find a job in New York? Why does Jack have to do heavy work since he is such a good teacher?”
Grace didn’t seem to understand what I said. “Why do you think that?” she asked.
“Haven’t you hear d him say that he is digging New York? Is he building an underground passage?” I asked.
When she finally realized what I meant, Grace laughed to tears. She then asked us whether we knew the meaning of “I dig New York.” All of us shook our heads. So Gr ace asked Jack to explain it.
It turns out that “I dig New York” means “I love New York” in American slang(俚语)。
