For many Chinese families, rice is an important part of almost every meal. Where does rice come from? Yuan Longping and his team worked to grow rice on the farmland.
Food was a big problem in China in the past. This is because China has 22% of the world’s population, but only 7% of its farmland. In the 1960s, China suffered (遭受)a serious famine (饥荒). Millions of people died because they had no food. As an agronomy (农学)teacher, Yuan was very sad to see this. “How can I help them have enough food?” he thought. He decided to work on a kind of hybrid rice (杂交水稻). It has high output (产量).
At the time, other scientists didn’t think hybrid rice had much value. But Yuan and his team worked on it every day. They took very good care of their rice seeds.
At last, in 1973, they grew a new kind of hybrid rice. This rice is strong. Farmers can grow it in many different kinds of farmland and also in bad weather. It can fight illness, too. Its output is much greater than common kinds of rice. With the new kind, about 70,000,000 people could have food every year!
Yuan solved the food problem in China. But he was still working on rice. He hoped to grow rice in the sea! Yuan Longping said,“If I am not at home, I must be on the farmland; if I am not on the farmland, I must be on my way to the farmland.” Yuan died of organ failure at age 91 on May 22, 2021.

Bicycles play an important role in our daily life. Today’s bicycles are light, fast and comfortable. As we travel around on bicycles, we might not know the long history of this amazing little machine.
No one can say for sure when the bicycle was invented. But we know that early bikes were invented in France in the late 1700s. They had two wheels. But that was all they had in common with the modern bike.
By the middle of the 1800s, improvements were made to the early bicycles. A pedal (踏车) for moving the bicycle forward was added. And that allowed the rider to keep both feet on at all times. Since the bicycle was made of wood, and later of metal tires (金属轮胎), riding on the roads that aren’t smooth was uncomfortable.
In the late 1870s, a huge front wheel was used and the seat was moved forward so that the rider could sit directly over the front wheel and pedals. However, the rider sat up high over a huge front wheel and easily fell down. So it was dangerous to ride these bicycles.
In 1885, the first successful “safety” bicycle was designed. The seat of this bike was put further back towards the middle of the bike. And a basic gearing system (齿轮) was added. Other important things were added. With these, the safety bicycle was born. It solved safety matters by reducing the size of the front wheel. The rest, as they say, is history!
61.Match the time with the information and choose the right answer.

C.①-a①-c①-d①-b D.①-c①-d①-b①-a
62.What can we get from the passage?
A.We know the correct time when the bicycle was invented.

63.What does the underlined word “designed” in Paragraph 5 mean?

Some children do too much homework. According to data (数据) from the US Department of Education, if you spend more than two hours doing your homework, it can be bad for your marks.
Researchers looked at the math scores of students in the eighth grade and the amount (量) of homework they did. Then the results were compared with similar studies of homework in other countries. They expected the results to be similar around the world but they weren’t.
In the US, scores are the best for students when they do about one hour of homework each night. When they keep studying two or more hours, their marks begin to fall.
In Japan, when students study for more than two hours, their marks start going down—but only slightly (略微).
Canadian students seem to benefit (受益) from between one and two hours of homework—but when they do more, they don’t manage to improve their results. They are about the same as when they work for only one hour!
German students get higher marks when they do two to three hours of homework a night, but risk getting lower scores when they do three or more hours.
The conclusion (结论) seems to be that you should avoid spending too much time on your homework.
65.What does the underlined word “they” in Paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The researchers.B.The students.C.The results.D.The studies. 66.Whose marks seem to be least influenced by the length (长度) of time they spend? A.Students from the US.B.Students from Japan.
C.Students from Canada.D.Students from Germany.
67.Which of the following best shows the structure of the passage?
A.①/①①①①①/①B.①/①①/①①①①
C.①①/①①①①/①D.①①/①①①①①
68.What can we learn from the passage?
A.The US Department of Education encourages students to do more homework. B.Spending one hour on homework is the best way to improve students’ marks. C.Spending too much time on homework doesn’t mean you can get higher grades.
D.It is believed that the more homework students do, the higher marks they’ll get.
The way we spend our time can be divided (分) into three “bottles”. They are the necessary tasks bottle, the voluntary tasks bottle and the happiness bottle.
Every day, we spend time filling the necessary tasks bottle with useful things like making money, taking a shower, eating food and paying bills. We then fill another bottle with voluntary tasks. These are things that we do for others, but we may not enjoy them. This bottle gets filled with tasks like by taking children to activities, cooking family meals and washing clothes for the family. The two bottles are very important. If we don’t fill them each day, our family won’t run properly.
However, we often forget to fill the third bottle—the happiness bottle that we fill with activities that make us happy. Is your happiness bottle sometimes empty at the end of the day? Between doing all the necessary and voluntary tasks, time flies by, and before we know it, it is time for bed. We all have days like that.
This is why each day we have to make an effort (努力) to fill our happiness bottle. I always fill mine by going to the dance class. And every time I leave the class, I feel much
happier. This week, I had the pleasure of taking part in a guitar practice in my neighborhood. We showed our musical talent (才能) and played music for charity (慈善). It was a time of fun, friendship and music-making. At the end of the day, my happiness bottle was filled to the top.
Make sure to fill all the three bottles. Will your activities bring joy to your life? Or are the other two tasks taking up all your time? Try to find ways to achieve a balance (平衡). At the end of the day, hopefully we’ve done all we can to make sure that our happiness bottle is filled.
69.Which of the following is a kind of voluntary task according to the passage? A.Going to school.B.Enjoying a concert.C.Doing homework.D.Caring for the younger sister.
70.What does Paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A.Necessary and voluntary tasks are less important.
B.We require enough time to fill the necessary tasks bottle.
C.All the three bottles are filled to the top at the end of the day.
D.We all have experiences of failing to fill the happiness bottle.
71.How does the writer fill her happiness bottle most of the time?
A.By playing music for charity.B.By taking the dance class.
C.By listening to some nice music.D.By making friends with others. 72.What does the writer mainly want to tell us in the passage?
A.Why we spend our time on voluntary tasks.B.Why we have to finish so many tasks. C.How to improve the way we spend our time.D.How to join different activities to show our talents.
