M:Why were you talking to that guy just now? He looks kind of strange.

Text 3
W:Remember I told you about Bill, the guy I work for? I heard that they want to fire him.
M:I told you that guy was nothing but trouble. You should stay away from him.
W:I’m his secretary. It’s my job to be with him.Besides,he isn’t that bad and he’s funny.
Text 4
W:Hey,Joe! We’re all going over to the hospital to meet Wanda. We’re going to stop at the store first to buy some flowers.

M:I was just watching the sun come up.Charlie and Pat are taking the boat out to go fishing. We’ll have some fresh fish this afternoon.
W:I was talking to Pat yesterday, and she said that they were going to take a trip to the island today.I didn’t know they were going to go fishing.

W:Really? Why are they so expensive? His shows are usually free.
M:Yeah, but it says that there are five bands and that you get a free drink and a free shirt. And all the money from the ticket sales is going to go to a children’s charity.
W:Oh,that makes sense, then.Hugo told me a few weeks ago that they were going to play at a special charity event.

It is generally accepted these days that reading a book will help you relieve stress. And it may actually make you a more thoughtful person as you learn to connect with the various characters. But there’s more.A new study discovered that reading more than 3.5 hours per week actually increased a person’s lifespan(寿命) by 23 percent—about 12 years for the people involved in the study.
The study was led by a group of researchers at Yale University. It looked at 3,635 people, both men and women but all older than 50.The researchers divided them into three categories:those who
didn’t read books;those who read up to 3.5 hours a week;those who read more than 3.5 hours a week.
After the researchers adjusted for factors like education, health and income, the data showed that,on average, those who read about 3.5 hours a week were 17 percent less likely to die.
In addition, the study examined people who read newspapers and magazines and found that they were 11 percent less likely to die than non-readers,but only if they spent more than seven hours reading each week. That may be due to the different forms of these items. When people read newspapers or magazines, they tend to skim the material rather than read it fully.Avni Bavishi, the study’s leader, said,“We believe people need to know, learn and understand more things when they are reading books, because they’re longer and there are more characters, more plots to follow, and more connections to make.”
From all of this, the authors concluded that,as with a healthy diet and exercise, books appear to promote a “significant survival advantage”.
Clearly, there is a need for more study. We’re certain that book lovers all around the world will be glad to provide the data needed to make further conclusions.
语篇解读本文介绍了一个新的研究成果:爱读书的人的寿命会比不爱读书的人长一些。

With so many other ways to get information these days,do we still need books?Old habits die hard, and are passed from generations. 36 Well, that is an ideal world.
I think it comes from the educational side of life.If you have a good experience in school with books, then reading on after school years won’t be a problem. For me I did very well in English language and literature as I had an inspiring and interesting English teacher. 37 The creative side of you should always come first and then the technical mistakes can be corrected.
38 If you casually read to your children, then the books will always be there in their lives and by the time reading comes along at the age of 4-5 years old,it will all be fun and make sense.Books are very important to learning.
39 However,it requires reading and reading requires practice.I believe we should relax while learning and digesting facts and information, and this can only be done with the simple book.
40 Then expand on and use the technology available, like e-books to make things convenient. But when you are not in a rush or while on a sunny beach, spending time with your children, what could be better than holding that book in your hands and feeling the achievement of getting to the last page?
A.Learn the basic habit of reading a book first.
B.It’s difficult to get children to read books today.
C.Reading e-books is a better way to digest facts and information.
D.If your parents read to you,you will read to your children and so on.
E.Starting reading early is very important to children’s friendship with books.

Dear Mike,
I know you are now having trouble in communicating with your classmates, and you may often feel lonely. That is because you are all new here and your classmates are not quite familiar with each other. But I think you can make it if you follow my advice below.
Firstly, why not take an active part in the discussions and freely express your own opinions? At the same time, learn to listen to others’ views.Secondly, you can learn about your classmates’likes and dislikes. Then you will find something in common with you.In this way,you can get to know more about different people around you.Above all,do remember that taking part in activities with others makes you share something with them. With time going on,I am sure they’ll know you better and like to make friends with you.
I hope you will find these ideas useful.
Yours,
Li Hua。
