Day nurseries (10分)
For many years there have been day nurseries, good, bad and different. Mothers who have to work can leave their babies and small children there. The good ones have been run by people who try to understand children’s needs, love them, give them attention, love, things to play with, and freedom to develop. The poor ones have been run by people who think the main job is to train children to be good, or who think all a child needs in the way of care is
cleanliness and enough food.
The people who started the nursery-school idea said, “All small children need a chance to be with other children, not just the ones whose mothers are working. All young children need space, music, paints, and clay to enrich their spirits.” They also said, “It isn’t enough that a person who is going to take charge of the children should just love them; she must understand them, too; and that means going to a training school for nursery-school teachers.”But don’t get the idea that any place that is called a nursery school is wonderful, for some of them are second-rage and just use the name because it’s popular. And there are some day nurseries that have kept up with progress and are running excellent nursery with trained teachers under the old label.
When you are thinking of sending your child to a nursery or a nursery school, you want to know, what’s the attitude of the teachers toward the children? Almost as important is the question: Have the teachers had real training? Next, How many children to a teacher? Finally, Is there enough play and rest space, indoors and out, enough equipment, toys, blocks, paints, and clay?
You should be able to find out about nursery schools in your neighborhood by consulting a family social agency.
1.Nursery school teachers should try to give children the following except_____________.

A: they are second-rate B: it’s popular C: they have trained teachers
4.When parents are thinking of sending their child in a nursery or a nursery school, they should try to get
information from_______________.
A: people who run the nursery school B: a family social agency.
C: people who started the nursery-school idea
5.Which is the main idea of the text?
A:The most important thing a nursery school teacher should do is to take care of children----that’s to keep them clean and give them enough food.
B: The main job of a nursery school teacher is to discipline them into being good.
C: A nursery school teacher should not only love children but also understand them.

Time to learn (20分)
The kindergarten experience is time between the relative freedom of nursery school and the relative structure of formal schooling. A kindergarten is usually in a neighborhood public school and so marks the beginning of a “real” school. There is usually a great emphasis on preparing children for the first grade, by teaching them letters and numbers. Children who attend kindergarten generally do better later on with such reading skills as word recognition, word comprehension and reading rate.
Between 3 and 4 years of age, children use three-to-four word sentences that include only the most basic words. They ask many questions and can give and follow simple commands. They name familiar things like animals,
body parts and important people. They use plurals and they use I , you, and me correctly. Their vocabulary include about 900 to 1200 words.
Between the ages 5 and 6, children begin to use sentences of six to eight words. They can define simple words, and they know some opposites. They use more conjunctions, prepositions, and articles in everyday speech. Speech is fairly grammatical, although children still neglect the exceptions to rules. Language is becoming less egocentric and more socialized, and vocabulary ranges from 2000 to 2500 words.
Between 6 and 7 years of age, children’s speech becomes quite complex. They now speak in compound, complex, and grammatically correct sentences; They use all parts of speech; and they have a vocabulary of 3000 to 4000 words.
The form of speech changes as children grow up. Piaget (1955) described pre-school speech as being either egocentric or socialized. Egocentric speech consists of repeating words and syllables for pleasure, of monologue (talking to oneself), and of collective monologue two or more children talking with each other, with mo communication intended. Socialized speech is for communication. Piaget(1955) divides it into four kinds: (1) an exchange of information between speaker and listener; (2) criticism; (3) commands, requests, and threats; and (4) questions and anences the way children relate to their teachers and the world.
