By becoming a writer,I’ve become a reader. While performing community service at the library,I read to those who are less fortunate and unable to read. From pre-school children to the elderly,I enjoy my time reading to people of all ages.It is pleasing to see the awesome expressions on their faces as the words become a vision in their minds.Giving back is one of the greatest gifts you could give in life.It inspires me to write something people can learn from.

It amazed me—every time I saw Joe he was smiling. It didn’t matter whether he had to stop at a stop light,or if he was the seventh person in line at the bank, and the teller(出纳员) ended her job just before he got there.Joe always smiled. It made me wonder why he always seemed so happy.
Having observed Joe with other people,I noticed something else too.Joe asked people how they were doing, and really seemed to listen to their answers. He showed pity to someone who was hurting, and had kind words, and offered to help in any way he could.
It made me think what if I tried to smile more?An experiment began when I went to the supermarket.I smiled as I went up and down in the supermarket and people I didn’t even know smiled back at me.Some even spoke! The little kid in the cart who was giving his mother a hard time saw me smile;he stopped talking and then made a shy attempt at a smile. The man in the cart for the disabled needed help to reach for something, and I got it for him.The smile even transferred(转移)over to him,and he thanked me.
As I drove home,I was smiling. Now I know a smile is a small thing, but what if we all try to smile a few more times each day?I couldn’t believe how great I felt.Nothing in my life had changed, but maybe it had. What I had learned was that such a small thing could lift not only my spirits, but also the spirits of those around me.So smile!

TheMostBeautifulHeart
One day a young man declared that he had the most beautiful heart in the world.A large crowd flocked to admire his heart for it was perfect. There was not a flaw(瑕疵) in it.
Suddenly,an old man appeared and said,“Why,your heart is not nearly as beautiful as mine.”
The crowd and the young man looked at the old man’s heart. It was full of scars. It had places where pieces had been removed and other pieces put in,but they didn’t fit quite right, and there were
several pointed edges. In fact,in some places there were deep holes where whole pieces were missing.
The young man laughed and said,“Comparing your heart with mine, mine is perfect and yours is a mess of scars.”
“Yes,”said the old man.“Yours looks perfect, but I will never trade my heart with you.You see, every scar represents a person to whom I have given my love.I tear out a piece of my heart and give it to them, and often they give me a piece of their heart that fits into the empty place in my heart.
But because the pieces aren’t ee rough edges, which I cherish, because they remind me of the love we shared.
Sometimes I have given pieces of my heart away, and the other person hasn’t returned a piece of his or her heart to me.These are the empty holes — giving love is taking a chance.
Although these cuts are painful, they stay open, reminding me of the love I have for those people.I hope someday those people may return and fill the space. So now do you see what true beauty is?”
The young man walked up to the old man, reached into his perfect heart, and ripped a piece out.He offered it to the old man.
The old man placed it in his heart, then took a piece from his old scarred heart and placed it in the wound in the young man’s heart. It fit,but not perfectly,as there were some rough edges.

We moved on into the jungle—a forest where large numbers of tall trees and plants grow very close together.Old Mali went in front and I followed close behind him.We stopped for the night about an hour before it began to get dark.
Old Mali lit a fire. Then he showed me how to make a bed with moss(青苔,苔藓).
It was soft and comfortable.
“Mali, how did you learn to make such a bed?” I asked.
“I learned to make beds like that,” Mali replied,“by watching and listening to others. That is the real way to learn anything.”
“Will you let me watch you always?” I asked Old Mali.“I want t o learn all the things you know about the jungle.”
When we had finished our supper,Old Mali got onto his bed and lay down.It was completely dark.In the fire light,Old Mali seemed to be fast asleep on his bed.I suddenly felt alone and afraid.
All day in the jungle, while we had been walking,I had heard noises of animals. The jungle was a wall of blackness in the light of the fire.
I felt frightened and suddenly my mouth went dry.I wanted to scream.I felt my mouth opening wide, ready to scream as loud as possible.
But I did not scream.I saw Old Mali’s face in the firelight. This made me feel ashamed.I held my teeth tightly together to stop myself from screaming.I lay down and closed my eyes.
As soon as I closed my eyes,I heard a thousand noises. The whole jungle became alive with animals moving quietly and carefully all around me.Suddenly Old Mali took a deep breath and made a noise.I
was hearing so many imaginary noises and the real noise made by Old Mali gave me a terrible fright.
I opened my eyes and jumped out of bed.I pulled my knife out and held it above my head.

第二节
Iwasgoingtoseeiftherewerewildanimalsbesidethefire.Through the burning fire,I believed I saw their sharp teeth and cruel red
eyes.Their claws would insert into my flesh without mercy as soon as I came into their sight.I couldn’t help trembling and screaming loudly at the thought of them. Then a soft voice came from the dark,“Are you OK?” It was Old Mali who was lying on his side with his eyes wide open.
OldMali’scalmvoicemademefeelbetter.Adjusting breath quickly and observing carefully,I found the animals were just the shadows of trees.I laughed in relief and told Old Mali what had happened.Having known the whole story,Mali gave me an understanding smile and told me his former experiences in the jungle. With these stories,I got back to my bed and lay down.Ey eyes, and knowing Old Mali was watching,I soon fell fast asleep. That night was so unforgettable that it would stay in my memory forever.。
