第二部分阅读理解(满分40分)阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

21.(6分)Breakdancing is set to make its first debut (亮相) as an Olympic sport at Paris 2024, Tony Estanguet, head of the Paris organizing committee, said on February 21st. Skateboarding, sport climbing and surfing, which have already been added to the programme for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, have been invited to return in Paris four years later.
Ton y Estanguet said the choices responded to a need to make the Olympics “more urban” and “more artistic”. We have chosen to present the International Olympic Committee (IOC) with the four sports because they are creative, appealing to youth and completely in line with our vision. They reflect perfectly Paris 2024’s identity.
Breakdancing is an example of a sport “Which can be played anywhere and anytime in urban and other environment.” It appeared at the 2018 Youth Olympics in Buenos Aires in the form of head-to-head “battles”. In competitive breakdancing, “breakers” face off in “battles” against each other, either as individuals or teams. Breakdancers use a mix of physical and artistic skills combining elements from gymnastics or acrobatics (杂技).
The IOC had announced that the number of competitors at Paris 2024 would be restricted to 10, 500, which limited the opportunity to add sports. But the organizers said the inclusion of the four sports in Paris would not necessitate the construction of permanent facilities and would involve just 248 competitors, of which 32 would he in breakdancing. The surfing events are likely to be held in established surf centres such as Biarritz or Lacanau in southwest France.
The inclusion still need to be rubberstamped by the IOC, which is expected to decide on which sports to add in Paris after next years’ Tokyo Games.
1、What do we know about breakdancing?
A.It involves multiple skills.
B.It’s limited to group competition.
C.It will show up in Paris 2024.
D.It never appeared in the world events.
2、Why have Paris organizers chosen the four sports?
A.Because they attract young people.
B.Because they perfectly reflect Paris’ identity
C.Because they make Paris more urban and artistic.
D.Because they can be played anytime and anywhere.
3、What can we learn from Paragraph 4?
A.10, 500 competitors will compete for the new sports.
B.More surf centers will be specially designed for Paris 2024.
C.The IOC will reject the proposal because of inadequate facilities.
D.The inclusion won’t require additional competition space to he built.
4、Which is closest in meaning to the underlined word “rubberstamped” in the last paragraph?
A.approved B.canceled
C.submitted D.designed
22.(8分)Researchers at the University of York in England published their findings on facial recognition that, on average, people can remember as many as 5,000 faces.
There have been many studies recently on facial recognition technology. But the authors of this study say theirs is the first time that scientists have been able to put a number to the abilities of humans to recognize faces. Rob Jenkins, leader of the research, said the researchers’ study centered on “the number of faces people actually know.” and were not able to discover whether there is a “limit on how many faces the brain can handle.”
Jenkins said the ability to tell individual people apart is “clearly important.” In today’s modern world of big cities, we meet and deal with thousands of people. The study suggests our facial recognition abilities help us to deal with the many different faces we see on the screens, as well as those we know. The results of the study give a baseline for comparing the “facial vocabulary” of humans with facial recognition
software.
Today, facial recognition technology is used in many ways, including by law enforcement agencies to prevent crime and violence. Governments use it to keep secret areas secure and, in extreme cases, control populations. Some governments use the software to watch people and find out where they go and what they do. Even Facebook uses facial recognition. For example, when you name a friend, Facebook technology may recognize the person’s face from a different picture you had shared before.
For the human study, people spent one hour writing down as many faces from their personal lives as possible. At first, they found it easy to come up with many faces. But by the end of the hour, they found it harder to think of new ones. Their change in speed let the researchers estimate when they would have run out of faces completely. 1,000 to 10,000 faces remembered. People who took part in the study were also shown thousands of photographs of famous people. Researchers asked them which ones they recognized. To make sure they knew these people, researchers required them to recognize two different photos of each famous person. The results showed that the participants knew between 1,000 and 10,000 faces.
How do they explain such a wide range? Jenkins said one explanation may be that some people have a natural ability for remembering f aces. “There are differences in how much attention people pay to faces and how well they process the information.” Also it could be because of different social environments. Some people may have grown up in more populated places. So, they may have had more social contact throughout their lives.
Researchers think age may be an interesting area for further research. “It would be interesting to see whether there is a peak age for the number of faces we know”, Jenkins said. He said it is possible that we gather more faces throughout our lifetime. But, he added, there also may be an age at which we start to find it harder to remember all of those faces.
1、What can we learn from the research?
A.People can remember up to 5,000 faces averagely.
B.People can write down up to 10,000 faces quickly.
C.There is a limit to the number of faces a person can remember.
D.There is a peak age for the number of faces a person can remember.
2、The scientists carried out the research aiming to ______.
A.be the first to number the faces people can remember
B.help people recognize many different faces
C.improve people’s facial vocabulary
D.develop facial recognition software
3、Facial recognition technology is used by governments to ________.
A.predict and prevent crime B.track and monitor people
C.name a friend on Facebook D.control populations in secret areas 4、In Jenkins’ opinion, what may contribute to people’s different faci al vocabulary? A.Growing conditions. B.Natural environment.
C.Personal experience. D.Information technology.
23.(8分)The Indian government may use 3D paintings as virtual speed breakers(减速带)on major highways and roads, in order to check speeding and careless driving, and finally make its deadly roads a little safer. "We are trying out 3D paintings used as virtual speed breakers to avoid unnecessary requirements of speed breakers," India's transport minister Nitin Gadkari wrote.
The optical illusions(视觉错觉) are supposed to encourage drivers to slow down automatically. Earlier, India had ordered the removal of all speed breakers from highways, which are considered to be a safety hazard for
high-speed vehicles. India has the highest number of road accident deaths in the world. According to the World Health Organisation, over 200,000 people are killed by road accidents.
The use of optical illusions as speed breakers was first pioneered in the American city of Philadelphia in 2008, as part of a campaign against speeding motorists. The technique has also been tried out in China to create floating 3D crossings. In India, cities such as Ahmedabad and Chennai have already experimented with 3D zebra crossings in the last one year. In Ahmedabad for instance, a mother and her daughter, both artists, have painted 3D crosswalks in the first few months of 2016. The artists say their motto is "to increase the attention of drivers", and that the concept has been successfully tested in accident-prone zones on a highway.
However, critics argue that once drivers know that these speed breakers are visual illusions, they may ignore them. Others also point out that India's decision does not consider the safety of a large number of pedestrians. In the end, the new policy may be just one step towards improving road safety.
1、Why are 3D paintings used on main highways and roads?
A.To make the surroundings more beautiful.
B.To attract the attention of tourists.
C.To reduce the rate of traffic accidents.
D.To show the advanced technology.
2、Which of the following words is closes t to the meaning of “hazard” in paragraph 2?
A.Reminder B.Threat C.Regulation D.Theory
3、What can we learn from Paragraph 3 and 4?
A.The use of optical illusions as speed breakers is controversial in India. B.Philadelphia is the second place to use virtual speed breakers in the US. C.The idea tested in Ahmedabad recently has been a failure.
D.The new policy of 3D zebra crossings must be carried out.
4、What do we know about 3D zebra crossings from the text?
A.They can immediately lower the death rate.
B.They have been widely used in India so far.
C.They are designed to increase drivers’ attention.
D.They are welcomed by both drivers and pedestrians.
24.(8分)What’s that one thing you really should do, but keep putting off? We all have time-consuming or difficult chores we’re afraid of, and drag out until the last minute —if we complete them at all.
But what if we could drive ourselves into those boring tasks by pairing them with something we really enjoy? Research suggests that combining the things we want to do with the things we should do could be a nice trick to reaching our goals. The method is known as “temptation bundling (捆绑)” and it allows you to combine two different, but complementary (补充的) activities at the same time.
“I only let myself get a footbath when I’m doing some work,” says Katherine Milkman, a professor of behavioral economics at the University of Pennsylvania.
Another example? Go to your favorite restaurant with a difficult colleague or someone you’re supposed to spend time with, such as a relative.
In short, it’s pairing a thing you like with something you don’t like that offers you motivation to do something you might be putting off.
Exercise is one activity routinely being treated as a chore —so Milkman used it in an experiment to know how temptation bundling works in reality.
In her experiment, Milkman encouraged students to exercise while listening to addictive, page-turning audiobooks. One group, which could only access the audiobooks while at the gym, were 51% more likely to exercise than the control group, which were able to listen when they liked. Another group, whose access to the audiobooks was not restricted but who were merely encouraged to bundle the activities, were 29% more likely to exercise than the control group.
The benefit of temptation bundling comes from doing two things that go well together at one time, says Milkman. “The secret is to bundle tasks that require different effort. For example, if one task requires focus or concentration, you want the other not to be too distracting —reading while listening to a podcast is very difficult, for example, while cooking and l istening is more realistic,” Milkman adds.
1、What do we know about temptation bundling?
A.To do two things you like at the same time.
B.To do two things you hate at the same time.
C.To do something you like and then do something you hate.
D.To do something you hate while doing something you like.
2、What did Milkman’s experiment find about temptation bundling?
A.It was very popular. B.It was effective indeed.
C.It was rather impractical. D.It was interesting actually.
3、Which of the following would be a good choice according to Milkman? A.Reading and watching TV.
B.Driving and having a chat.
C.Running and listening to music.
D.Chatting and playing computer games.
4、What would be the best title for the text?
A.A Good Way to Get Work Done
B.A Nice Trick to Make Things Easier
C.Can We Do Two Things at One Time?
D.Can We Accomplish More With Less Effort?

Traveling Frog Stimulates Reflection
A free mobile game about a traveling frog has become a hit in China, 1.being available only in Japanese.
Called “Tabikaeru: Travel Frog”, the main character of the game is a frog that goes on adventures around Japan. Players collect clovers(四叶草) that grow in the frog’s garden 2.they can use them to buy supplies for the frog’s journeys. In turn, the frog sends players souvenirs and snapshots from its travels. Users cannot control when the frog chooses to go on its adventures.
While news of the game’s appeal among mobile phone use rs on the mainland was first reported on by local media outlets last week, its popularity hasn’t decreased in any way since: “Travel Frog” on Monday was still ranked first on a list of the most 3.(download) games from Apple’s app store in China. Behind the craze is Japanese game developer Hit-Point, which was previously

The game was popular as it “tapped the trend among younger generations in China to search out ‘Z en-like’ activities”, China Daily said, 6.(add) that those users were taken with its “Buddha-style gameplay”.
But not everyone is thrilled about “Travel Frog”. In a post on social media platform Weibo last week, the state-run People’s Daily suggested that people 7.aim to enrich themselves and “avoid being a lonely frog-raising youth”.
As an indication of the popularity of the “Travel Frog”, Apple has already had to remove from its store an app that appeared to be the Chinese version of the original, the South China Morning Post reported. That version of the game, which 8.(create) by a developer called Song Yang, charged users 30 yuan ($4.74) to download the game. On Monday, another free-to-download app available on the app store claimed it offered strategies and guides in Chinese that players could adopt 9.(improve) gameplay.
While Hit-Point has not responded to inquiries about 10.it intends to develop versions of the game in other languages or not, the company did put out an English update for “Neko Atsume” in 2015.

I am looking forward to your early reply.
Yours,
Li Hua。
