Researchers continue to show the power behind our sense of smell. Recent studies have found, among other things, that th e smell of foods like pizza can cause uncontrollable anger in d rivers on roads.
The review explains that smell is unique in its effects on the br ain. According to Conrad King, the researcher who carried out the review, “more than any other senses, the sense of smell goes through the logical part of the brain and acts on the syst ems concerned with feelings. This is why the smell of baking bread can destroy the best intentions of a dieter.”
Smell, which dictates(决
定) the unbelievable complexity of food tastes, has always be en the least understood of our senses. Our noses are able to detect up to 10,000 distinct smells. Our ability to smell and tas te this extremely large range of smells is controlled by someth ing like 1,000 genes (基
因), which make up an amazing 3% of the human genome(基因
组). Researchers Richard Axel and Linda Buck were together awarded a Nobel Prize in 2004 for their ground-
breaking research on the nature of this extraordinary sense. T hese two scientists were the first to describe the family of 1,00 0 olfactory (嗅
觉) genes and to explain how our olfactory system works. According to one study in the research review, smelling fresh pizza or even the packaging of fast foods can be enough to m ake drivers feel impatient with other road users. They are then
more likely to speed and experience uncontrollable anger on roads. The most reasonable explanation is that these can all make drivers feel hungry, and therefore desperate to satisfy t heir appetites.
In contrast, the smells of peppermint and cinnamon were sho wn to improve concentration levels as well as reduce drivers’ i mpatience. Similarly, the smells of lemon and coffee appeare d to promote clear thinking and mental focus.
However, the way genes regulate smell differs from person to person. A study by researchers in Israel has identified at least
50 olfactory genes which are switched on in some people an
d not in others. They believ
e this may explain why some o
f us love some smells and tastes while others hate them. The Isra el researchers say their study shows that nearly every human bein
g shows a different pattern of active and inactive smell-detecting receptors.
28. What did Richard Axel and Linda Buck find out?
A. The type of food smells.
B.The logical part of human brain.
C.The nature of human olfactory system.
D.The relationship between pizzas and feelings.
29. Which of the following can help people concentrate?
A. Bread.
B. Pizza.
C. Coffee.
D. Fast food.
30. What do we know from the last paragraph?
A. Every people can recognize up to 50 smells.
B. Every person has a different pattern of genes.
C. Different people are sensitive to different smells.
D. There are still some olfactory genes to be found out.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Logic and behavior.
B. Smell and its influen ce.
C. Sense ability and food tastes.
D. Olfactory genes and its system.

户):around 20,000 people have advertised their spaces on t he site, and he says around half a million drivers use it.There are other sites doing very similar things, like Uber and Lyft---these let drivers share their cars with other passengers.Any dr iver knows how valuable a place to park is .A church near Kin gs Cross in central London has apparently made over £200,0 00 by renting out space in its yard to travelers!
Because this is a new business world, those rules aren’t there yet and many people are happy to share...as long as it pays! But the sharing economy has its critics:the competitors of thes e new companies.People who run things like traditional B&B, commercial car parks and taxi services are afraid of ending u p out of pocket. And there is another issue:regulations on thes e new business are unclear. How will renting out your drivewa y affect your neighbor?
