Have you made New Year’s goals in January or at the beginning of the year? Every time a new year begins, people set out to improve themselves. This tradition started in Babylon about 4,000 years ago.
At that time, the calendar in Babylon was different from the one we have today. Local people saw the Akitu Festival as the beginning of the year. This festival was in late March. It celebrated the rebirth of the sun god Marduk. During the festival, people made promises to work harder in the new year. They thought this would help them to be blessed (祝福) by their god.
The old tradition continues to this day, but does it work well? According to a 2022 report by Time magazine, about 80% of people give up on their New Year’s goals by February. Only 8% continue with their goals for the whole year.
How can we, then, stick to our goals for the new year? Scientist Britt Frank offers her advice. “We often set overly high goals for the future,” she said. “In fact, we should honestly consider why we have failed in the past. This will help us make good goals and stick to them better!”

AI now is very smart. It can write an article, create a piece of art, etc. And, it can even read your mind and translate it into text. A new AI tool was developed by a team of scientists in America.
The tool has two main parts, a scanner (扫描仪) and an AI system (系统) called GPT-1. The scanner can record people’s brain activity. And GPT-1 works just like Chat GPT and other similar AI systems.
Three volunteers took part in the team’s study. Each person spent sixteen hours listening to stories. The people imagined the stories as they heard them. And the scanner recorded their brain activity.
These recordings and the text of the stories were fed into GPT-1. It then made connections between them. Then came the test: The scientists let the volunteers listen to some new stories. This time, GPT-1 was given only their brain activity recordings. The AI system then wrote out the stories according to the recordings. The results were very similar to the correct answers. The words weren’t exactly the same. But they often carried the same meaning.

In the future, this technology could be useful to them.69. What can the scanner of the AI tool do?A. Create a piece of art. B. Translate people’s mind into texts.C. Record people’s brain activity.
